Every royal burial in the Valley of the Kings had been entered, emptied, and in most cases systematically stripped, some within a generation of the funeral and the rest during an organized state recovery of precious metal at the close of the New Kingdom. Egyptologists knew this. It was the settled condition of the field: royal tombs supplied architecture, wall decoration, and fragments, and the objects that had filled them were understood as permanently lost. What no one had ever seen was a complete set of what a pharaoh actually took into the ground.
On 4 November 1922 a workman clearing rubble beneath the entrance of the tomb of Ramesses VI uncovered a cut step in the bedrock. Sixteen steps later there was a plastered doorway carrying the seal impressions of the royal necropolis. Behind it, at the end of a rubble-filled corridor, lay four small rooms containing over five thousand objects, arranged as the funerary priests had left them roughly thirty-three centuries earlier, disturbed twice by ancient robbers who had been caught before they could finish. The occupant, a minor king whom Egyptian officialdom had deliberately struck from its own lists, became the most recognized name from the ancient world within weeks.

This article makes what can be called the intact-tomb thesis: Tutankhamun matters to the modern world almost entirely because his was the one royal burial recovered substantially complete, and everything else about his global standing follows from that single fact of preservation rather than from anything he did. The corollary matters as much as the claim. Because the assemblage is complete, it functions as the control sample against which every fragmentary find from every other robbed royal tomb can be interpreted. Its scholarly value is not the gold. It is that we finally know what the full set looks like.
The king himself, his reign, his parentage, his health, and his death are treated separately in the profile of Tutankhamun, the boy king of Egypt. What follows is the source, not the subject: how the tomb was found, how it was excavated, what survived and what the excavation destroyed, what the contents taught the discipline, and how a story about a curse grew out of a newspaper contract.
The Tomb Discovery Timeline
Four things get compressed in popular retellings until they become one event: a decade-long search, a discovery in November 1922, a clearance that ran for a further ten years, and a press phenomenon that generated the curse. They had different causes, different evidence, and different consequences, and the table below separates them. It is the single artifact of this article.

The Valley Before Carter
The discovery makes no sense without the state of the Valley of the Kings in the years before it, and that state was one of confident exhaustion.
The royal necropolis on the Theban west bank had been the burial ground of New Kingdom pharaohs for roughly five centuries, and its layout, its tombs, and its plundering are the subject of the guide to the Valley of the Kings. By the early twentieth century, sixty-odd tombs had been numbered, and the great majority had been open since antiquity, with Greek and Roman visitors leaving graffiti on their walls. Systematic excavation from the middle of the nineteenth century onward had gone over the accessible ground repeatedly.
From 1902 the concession to dig in the valley was held by Theodore M. Davis, an American businessman who funded the work and employed a succession of archaeologists to run it. The Davis years were productive by any measure, producing the tomb of Yuya and Thuya, the parents of Queen Tiye, which contained a substantial quantity of intact funerary equipment and was itself a demonstration that undisturbed material could still survive; the ambiguous deposit in KV55; the tomb of Horemheb; and a series of smaller pits and caches.
Three of Davis’s finds bore directly on Tutankhamun. A blue faience cup carrying his name was recovered under a rock. A small pit, later numbered KV54, produced a cache of pottery jars containing linen, natron, floral collars, animal bones, and the other refuse of an embalming and a funerary meal, several items inscribed with the king’s name. And a further pit, KV58, yielded fragments of gold foil from chariot fittings naming Tutankhamun, Ay, and Ankhesenamun.
Davis interpreted this material as the remains of the king’s burial, plundered and reduced to scraps, and said so in print. His conclusion, published in 1912, was that the valley was exhausted and that nothing further remained to be found. It is one of the most frequently cited misjudgments in the history of archaeology, and it deserves a fairer hearing than it usually gets: Davis had dug the valley for a decade with competent staff, the material genuinely was fragmentary, and his inference from scraps to a destroyed burial was reasonable on the evidence he had.
Why did anyone still expect an intact royal burial?
Because the fragments did not add up. An embalming cache is a byproduct of a funeral, not the remains of a robbed tomb, and its careful burial in a sealed pit implied a burial nearby that had been conducted with full ritual. The material pointed toward a tomb, not away from one.
Carter’s reasoning, set out in his own accounts and visible in his season plans, ran along those lines and added a spatial argument. He mapped the areas of the valley floor that had been cleared to bedrock and identified a triangle of ground bounded by the entrances to the tombs of Ramesses II, Merenptah, and Ramesses VI that had never been fully worked. The obstacle was practical: clearing it meant removing the ancient stone huts of the workmen who had cut the tomb of Ramesses VI, and doing so would block the entrance to one of the valley’s most visited tombs during the tourist season. Carter had deferred that clearance for several years for exactly that reason. In the final season he stopped deferring it.
The lesson embedded here is worth stating for any student of archaeological method. The tomb was not found by intuition or by following a legend. It was found by defining the unexcavated area on a plan, accepting the inconvenience of working the last of it, and digging to bedrock. The romance of the discovery has obscured how mundane and how replicable the method was.
Carter and Carnarvon
The partnership behind the excavation was unusual in its combination of a self-taught professional with no formal education and an aristocratic patron with no professional training, and both halves of it matter to how the work was done.
Howard Carter came to Egypt in 1891 at seventeen, hired as a tracer to copy tomb reliefs because he could draw. He learned excavation in the field, worked under Flinders Petrie at Amarna, spent years recording the reliefs at the temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, and by his mid twenties was appointed Chief Inspector of Antiquities for Upper Egypt, a serious post that put him in charge of the monuments of the Theban region. He installed electric lighting in the royal tombs, improved their protection, and gained a reputation for competence and for an inflexible temper. In 1905 a confrontation at Saqqara between Egyptian site guards under his authority and a group of French tourists ended with Carter refusing to apologize for his men, and he resigned rather than yield. For several years afterward he supported himself in Luxor by painting watercolors for visitors and by acting as an agent in the antiquities trade.
George Herbert, fifth Earl of Carnarvon, arrived in Egypt for his health. A serious motor accident in 1901 had left him with damaged lungs, and English winters were advised against. He began digging near Thebes in 1907 with more enthusiasm than technique, and the Antiquities Service, in the person of its director Gaston Maspero, suggested he employ a professional. The professional was Carter. From that point the arrangement was consistent: Carnarvon held the concession and paid, Carter directed the work and made the archaeological decisions, and the two published jointly.
In 1914, with Davis having relinquished the valley concession, Carnarvon obtained it. The First World War interrupted almost immediately, and sustained work only resumed in 1917. Five seasons followed with results that did not justify the cost. By the summer of 1922 Carnarvon had decided to stop funding the valley. Carter traveled to England and argued for one more season, offering to pay for it himself if necessary, and Carnarvon agreed to fund a final campaign.
Who was actually in charge on site?
Carter directed all archaeological work; Carnarvon held the legal concession and provided the money. The distinction became consequential after 1922, because the concession, the press rights, and eventually the legal claim to a share of the finds all rested with Carnarvon and then with his estate, while the recording and conservation decisions were Carter’s.
That division of authority explains much of what followed, including the bitterest episode of the excavation. It also explains a structural feature of the discovery that is easy to miss: this was a privately funded dig operating under a concession system in which foreign excavators had historically expected a division of finds with the Egyptian state. Carnarvon had reason to expect that a share of what came out of the tomb would be his. The political situation in Egypt was changing underneath that expectation, and the collision was not long delayed.
November 1922: The Discovery in Sequence
The events of the discovery are documented in Carter’s own excavation journal and in the photographic record made by Harry Burton, and the sequence is worth following closely because the compressed popular version removes almost everything that makes it intelligible.
Work on the final season began at the start of November with the clearance of the workmen’s huts beneath the entrance to the tomb of Ramesses VI. On 4 November, only days into the season, the workmen exposed a step cut into the bedrock. A widely repeated story attributes the find to a water boy who scraped a hole in the sand to steady his jars and struck stone. Carter’s own records do not mention it, the story appears later and in several incompatible versions, and it should be treated as folklore attached to the event rather than as evidence.
By the following day the excavators had cleared down to a plastered and sealed doorway. The seals visible on it were those of the royal necropolis, showing the jackal above nine bound captives, which established that the doorway had been closed by necropolis officials. What the seals did not yet show was a royal name. Carter, in a decision that says a great deal about the relationship, refilled the stairway, posted guards, and telegraphed Carnarvon in England to come.
Carnarvon arrived in Luxor on 23 November with his daughter, Lady Evelyn Herbert. The stairway was reopened and cleared to the base of the doorway, and the lower portion, previously buried, now showed seal impressions carrying Tutankhamun’s name. It also showed something more informative: part of the doorway had been broken through and replastered, and resealed with necropolis seals. The tomb had been entered in antiquity and closed again by officials.
Behind the doorway ran a descending corridor packed with limestone chippings. Clearing it took the better part of two days and produced fragments of pottery, jar sealings, and other debris of the kind that robbers leave behind. At the far end stood a second sealed doorway, similarly broken through and replastered.
On the afternoon of 26 November Carter made a small hole in the upper left corner of that second doorway, inserted a candle to test the air, and looked through. Carnarvon, Lady Evelyn, and Carter’s assistant Arthur Callender were behind him. Asked whether he could see anything, Carter replied that he could see wonderful things. What the candle showed was the antechamber: gilded couches with animal heads, dismantled chariots, boxes, alabaster vessels, and against the far wall two life-size guardian statues of the king facing each other across a sealed doorway.
What did the first look actually reveal?
An antechamber packed to the ceiling with royal funerary equipment, disordered by ancient robbers and then repacked untidily by the officials who resealed the tomb. Between two guardian statues stood a further plastered doorway, indicating that the burial chamber itself lay beyond and had not yet been reached.
The formal opening followed on 29 November, attended by Egyptian officials, and the antechamber was then photographed, planned, and cleared object by object across the remainder of that season and the next. The burial chamber wall was not taken down until 16 February 1923, in the presence of a large official party, and what stood behind it was the outermost of four nested gilded wooden shrines, filling the room almost wall to wall.
There is a persistent and unresolved question about whether Carter, Carnarvon, and Lady Evelyn entered the burial chamber privately before the official opening. A robbers’ hole in the sealed doorway between antechamber and burial chamber had been repaired in antiquity, and photographs and later testimony have been read as showing that the repair was reopened and then re-concealed with a basket and reeds during the first season. Correspondence and later recollections from within the excavation circle point the same way. Nothing about this alters the archaeology, but it bears on the honesty of the published record, and it is a fair question to raise in any assessment of the excavation.
Inside KV62: The Anatomy of the Tomb
KV62 is small. That is the first thing to understand about it, and the thing that most people who know the photographs do not expect.
The plan comprises a descending stairway, a sloping corridor, and four rooms: an antechamber roughly eight meters by three, an annexe opening off it that is smaller still, a burial chamber slightly lower than the antechamber floor, and a room Carter named the treasury opening off the burial chamber. The total floor area is a fraction of that of a normal royal tomb of the period, which typically ran to a long axis of corridors, pillared halls, and side chambers cut deep into the hillside. Only the burial chamber was decorated. In layout and scale KV62 resembles a tomb prepared for a high official rather than a king.
The standard explanation is that the king died unexpectedly, that no royal tomb was ready, and that a smaller tomb already under preparation was pressed into service and hastily adapted. A related suggestion is that the tomb intended for Tutankhamun is the one in the western branch of the valley that Ay eventually used, and that the two were exchanged. Neither can be proved, but the physical evidence of haste is real: the burial chamber decoration is confined to that one room, executed in a simplified style on a yellow ground, and shows spots of mold growth indicating the walls were sealed before the plaster had dried.
The antechamber held the disassembled and stacked equipment: three great ritual couches with the heads of a lion, a cow, and a composite hippopotamus creature; the parts of four dismantled chariots; boxes and chests containing clothing, sandals, jewelry, and linen; alabaster vessels; the gilded throne showing the king and queen beneath the rays of the Aten; and a painted wooden casket with hunting and battle scenes on its lid and sides.
The annexe was the most disordered room in the tomb, its contents thrown about by robbers searching for metal and for the costly oils and unguents that were the most portable valuables in an Egyptian burial. It held storage jars, food containers, boat models, games including senet boards, walking sticks, and further furniture.
The burial chamber held the shrines. Four gilded wooden shrines fitted one inside another, the outermost nearly filling the room, their surfaces carrying funerary texts and protective imagery. Between the second and third lay a linen pall spangled with gilded rosettes. Within the innermost shrine stood a quartzite sarcophagus with a granite lid that had cracked and been repaired in antiquity, its corners carved with the four protective goddesses. Inside were three anthropoid coffins nested together, the outer two of gilded wood and the innermost of solid gold. On the head of the mummy was the funerary mask of gold inlaid with lapis lazuli, carnelian, obsidian, turquoise, and colored glass.
The treasury was guarded at its entrance by a recumbent black jackal figure of Anubis on a shrine-shaped sledge, draped in linen. Behind it stood the canopic shrine, a gilded canopy with figures of the four goddesses standing guard with arms outstretched, containing an alabaster chest whose four compartments each held a miniature gold coffin for one of the king’s preserved organs. The room also held model boats, shabti figures in the hundreds, jewelry caskets, and a small wooden coffin containing two nested coffins and the mummified fetuses.
What kinds of objects were in the tomb?
Over five thousand catalogued items covering ritual equipment, furniture, chariots and weapons, clothing and textiles, jewelry, cosmetic and toilet articles, musical instruments, games, lamps, writing equipment, walking sticks, model boats, shabtis, and food and drink, including joints of meat, baskets of fruit, grain, and jars of wine.
That range is the point, and it is why the assemblage is so much more valuable to scholarship than the gold. A royal burial was intended to supply the king with everything required both for the journey through the underworld and for continued existence, and the completeness of the set is what makes it possible to see the logic of the whole. No other royal tomb has ever delivered it.
The Ten-Year Clearance and Why It Mattered
The excavation of KV62 took from 1922 to 1932. That decade is the part of the story that popular accounts skip entirely, and it is the part with the greatest consequences for archaeology as a discipline.
Carter’s first decision after the antechamber was opened was to stop. Rather than empty the room, he spent the remainder of that season assembling a team and building infrastructure. He recruited Arthur Mace, an experienced excavator and conservator from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to help with recording and with the physical treatment of fragile objects. He obtained the services of Harry Burton, also of the Metropolitan, as photographer. He brought in Alfred Lucas, a chemist working for the Egyptian government, to handle conservation science. Alan Gardiner and James Henry Breasted took on the philological work of reading inscriptions and seal impressions. Percy Newberry examined the botanical material. An empty nearby tomb, KV15, was converted into a laboratory and darkroom.
The recording system was the heart of it. Every object received a number keyed to its room and to its position in a plan. Every object was drawn, described on a card, and photographed in situ before being moved, with a numbered card placed beside it in the frame so the photograph and the record could never be separated. Burton’s negatives run to several thousand images and are themselves a primary source, since they preserve relationships between objects that no written description could capture. The card index and the plans survive and are held at the Griffith Institute in Oxford, where they remain the foundation of all subsequent study of the tomb.
Conservation ran alongside recording rather than after it. Much of the material was in acutely fragile condition. Textiles had rotted to the point where a garment could disintegrate when lifted. Wood had shrunk and its gilded gesso surface had lifted away in flakes. Leather had hardened and warped. Lucas and Mace developed treatments in the field, consolidating surfaces with dilute celluloid solutions and paraffin wax before objects could be moved at all. Some pieces required days of work in place before they could be lifted intact. This is why a room the size of a large sitting room took seasons rather than weeks to empty.
Why did the clearance need to be so slow?
Because the tomb’s scientific value lay in the relationships between objects as much as in the objects themselves, and because much of the material would have been destroyed by ordinary handling. Recording position before removal, and consolidating fragile surfaces before lifting, meant that a single chest could occupy the team for a week.
Set that method against the standards of the time and its significance is clear. Excavation in Egypt in the preceding century had frequently amounted to clearance for objects, with findspots recorded loosely if at all and conservation improvised afterward in a museum. Carter’s operation, whatever his failings as a colleague and a publisher, established the expectation that a rich deposit is recorded exhaustively in place, treated by specialists, and documented photographically, and that expectation has governed the field since.
The work was not continuous. In February 1924 a dispute between Carter and the Egyptian Antiquities Service, then directed by Pierre Lacau, escalated into a walkout. The immediate issues were access, the treatment of the press, and the presence of the excavators’ wives at a viewing, but the underlying issue was authority. Egypt had declared independence in 1922, and the new state and its antiquities administration were unwilling to treat a foreign excavator’s concession as a private domain. Carter closed the tomb and left; the government cancelled the concession and changed the locks. Work resumed only in 1925 under a new arrangement, after Carnarvon’s widow relinquished any claim to a division of the finds.
That outcome was decisive for where the objects are. Under the older concession practice, a foreign excavator could expect to receive a share of what was found. The entire contents of KV62 instead remained in Egypt, and Carnarvon’s estate was later compensated financially. It is the clearest single instance of the shift from a colonial-era system of divided finds to national ownership of antiquities, and it happened because the richest find in the history of the field arrived at the exact moment Egyptian sovereignty was being asserted.
Ancient Robbery and Why the Tomb Survived
The tomb was not untouched. Understanding what happened to it in antiquity is what explains why it survived at all, and the sequence can be reconstructed from the physical evidence with unusual precision.
There were two ancient intrusions. The first came very soon after the burial. Robbers tunneled through the plaster of the outer doorway, worked along the corridor, and broke into the antechamber and the annexe. Their targets were what robbers always targeted in Egyptian tombs: metal that could be melted, and the costly perfumed oils and unguents stored in stone jars, which were valuable, portable, and untraceable. Many of the jars were found emptied, some with the marks of fingers where the contents had been scooped out into skins for carrying. Gold fittings had been stripped from some objects.
The intrusion was detected. Necropolis officials resealed the outer doorway, and the corridor was filled with limestone chippings, a measure that would have made a second attempt vastly more laborious.
The second intrusion came after that filling. Robbers tunneled through the upper part of the chip fill and got as far as the burial chamber doorway and into the treasury, where a scatter of gold rings wrapped in a cloth was recovered from a box, apparently dropped or abandoned. They too were interrupted. The tomb was resealed a second time, the corridor refilled, and a plaster patch applied to the robbers’ hole with necropolis seals stamped across it. Then Egyptian officialdom closed the file.
Why was the tomb never found again in antiquity?
Because it was covered over. Roughly two centuries later, the cutting of the tomb of Ramesses VI immediately above sent quantities of limestone debris down the slope, and the stone huts of the workmen on that project were built on top of the accumulated spoil. The entrance to KV62 was buried under both.
Three factors combined. The tomb was small and its entrance modest, lying low in the valley floor rather than in the cliff face. Tutankhamun had been struck from the official king lists by Horemheb, which meant no continuing mortuary cult and no institutional memory of where he lay. And the debris and huts sealed the site physically. When the state itself organized the systematic recovery of royal burials at the end of the New Kingdom, moving mummies to caches and stripping their equipment, KV62 was not on the list because nobody remembered it existed. The irony is exact and worth holding onto. Tutankhamun survives because Egypt erased him. Had he been remembered as a legitimate king, his tomb would have been known, entered, and emptied like every other, and he would be a name in a list. Obscurity and a landslide of building rubble did what no royal precaution ever managed.
The Curse of the Pharaohs
The curse is the most widely known thing about this tomb and the least historically substantial. It is also, taken seriously as a phenomenon, a genuinely instructive case study in how a story is manufactured, and it can be traced to a specific commercial decision.
In January 1923 Carnarvon signed an exclusive agreement with a single London newspaper, granting it sole rights to news and photographs from the excavation. The reasoning was practical: the site was being overwhelmed by visitors and correspondents, and an exclusive contract funded the work and controlled access. The effect was that every other newspaper in the world, including the Egyptian press, was shut out of the biggest story of the year and had to find something else to print about it. What they found was atmosphere, rumor, and the supernatural.
Lord Carnarvon died in Cairo on 5 April 1923. He had been bitten on the cheek by a mosquito, had opened the bite while shaving, and had developed erysipelas, a bacterial skin infection, which progressed to blood poisoning and then to pneumonia. He was fifty-six and had been in fragile health for more than twenty years following a motor accident that damaged his lungs, which is why he had begun wintering in Egypt in the first place. The medical sequence is ordinary and fully documented in a period before antibiotics, when a facial infection was a serious matter for anyone and a probably fatal one for a man with compromised lungs.
The press had a death within five months of the opening, an aristocrat, a pharaoh, and no access to the actual story. The novelist Marie Corelli had already published a warning shortly before the death, claiming knowledge of ancient texts prescribing dire punishment for intruders into sealed tombs. After the death, Arthur Conan Doyle, whose commitment to spiritualism was public, suggested that elemental spirits created by the priests might be responsible. Neither was reporting; both were widely printed as though they were.
Was there a curse inscription in the tomb?
No. No inscription threatening intruders has ever been recorded from KV62, and none appears in the excavation records, the object cards, or any subsequent study. The various curse texts quoted in the popular literature were either invented outright or transplanted from unrelated tombs of other periods.
This point deserves emphasis, because the supposed inscription is the load-bearing element of the whole story and it does not exist. Egyptian tombs of some periods do carry threat formulas warning off intruders, generally in private tombs and generally invoking legal and divine sanction rather than lethal magic. KV62 has nothing of the kind. The texts on its walls and objects are funerary and protective, concerned with the king’s passage through the underworld, not with the living.
The other elements of the legend dissolve on inspection in the same way. The report that the lights of Cairo went out at the moment of Carnarvon’s death describes a city with a chronically unreliable electricity supply. The report that his dog died in England at the same hour rests on family recollection recorded later. The claim of a rising toll of deaths among those present was tested by comparison and does not hold: a study published in a medical journal in 2002 compared the survival of Westerners present at the opening of the tomb and the sarcophagus with a control group of others in Egypt at the time and found no significant difference in longevity.
The single most damaging fact for the curse is the survival of the people most exposed. Howard Carter, who found the tomb, directed a decade of work inside it, opened the shrines and coffins, and was present at every stage, died in 1939 at sixty-four, seventeen years after the discovery. Harry Burton, who spent a decade photographing inside the chambers, died in 1940. Alfred Lucas, who handled the objects chemically, lived into the 1940s. Douglas Derry, the anatomist who dissected the mummy itself, lived into his eighties. If proximity to the burial carried a penalty, the record is inexplicable.
A more scientific variant of the curse proposes that dormant mold spores or bacterial toxins sealed in the tomb caused illness in those who entered. This deserves a fair answer rather than dismissal. Aspergillus species and other fungi can grow on organic material in tombs and can cause serious disease in immunocompromised people, and the tomb did have visible mold spots on its burial chamber walls. But the tomb had been open and ventilated for months before most of the alleged victims entered, no pattern of respiratory illness appears among the excavation team, and Carnarvon’s documented cause of death was a bacterial infection of a facial wound with no connection to tomb air. The hypothesis is not absurd; it has no supporting evidence in this case.
What the curse story does illustrate, and this is why it belongs in a serious treatment rather than being waved away, is the relationship between access and misinformation. Restrict reporting on a story of overwhelming public interest and the vacuum will be filled by whatever is available, and what was available in 1923 was Victorian gothic, spiritualism, and a plentiful supply of novelists willing to comment. The curse is a documented consequence of a press contract.
What the Tomb Actually Taught Us
Strip away the fame and the question that matters is what the discipline learned. The answer is substantial and it falls into several distinct categories, most of which have nothing to do with gold.
The first and largest gain is the complete royal funerary assemblage. Before 1922, what a pharaoh was buried with had to be inferred from robbed tombs containing fragments, from tomb wall depictions of funeral processions, from private burials of officials, and from textual references. After 1922 there was a full set to examine. This changed the interpretation of every previously excavated royal tomb retrospectively, because fragments that had been unidentifiable could now be matched against complete examples. A scrap of gilded wood from a plundered Eighteenth Dynasty tomb could be recognized as part of a specific type of shrine or couch. The tomb became the reference collection for the entire period.
The second gain is the ritual sequence. The arrangement of the shrines, the orientation of the canopic equipment, the placement of the guardian statues, the magical bricks in their niches, the position of the Anubis figure at the treasury threshold, and the texts on the shrine panels together document how a royal burial was assembled and in what order. The burial chamber’s north wall shows the successor performing the opening of the mouth ritual on the mummy of the dead king, the ceremony that restored the faculties of the deceased, and it is one of the clearest surviving depictions of that rite in a royal context.
The third gain is technological. The chariots are the best preserved ancient vehicles known, and their construction has been studied in detail: the bent-wood techniques, the six-spoked wheels made of separate segments bound with rawhide that shrank as it dried to lock the joint, the leather tires, the flexible axle arrangement. Egyptian woodworking, joinery, veneering, and inlay are documented across the furniture at a level of detail no other source approaches. The composite bows and the bow case, the body armor of leather scales, and the shields belong to the same category of evidence about applied craft.
A single small object from the burial has had a scientific afterlife out of proportion to its size. Among the king’s daggers was one with an iron blade, at a period when iron was rare and precious in Egypt and worked iron objects are almost unknown. Analysis by X-ray fluorescence found a nickel and cobalt content characteristic of meteoritic iron, confirming that the blade was made from a fallen meteorite rather than from smelted ore. That single result is a data point in the wider question of when and how iron entered use in the eastern Mediterranean.
The fourth gain is textile and organic material. Egyptian textiles survive elsewhere, but rarely as a wardrobe. The tomb produced tunics, shawls, sashes, loincloths, gloves, socks, and sandals in numbers, some richly decorated with beadwork and applique, in sizes ranging from those of a child to those of a young adult. Together they document royal dress, weaving technique, and the organization of the workshops that supplied the palace.
What did the plant remains reveal?
Floral collars and garlands laid on the coffins preserved identifiable species, including cornflowers, mandrake, willow, olive, and persea. Because those species flower and fruit at determinable times of year, the collars indicate a burial in roughly March or April, which is one of the few pieces of hard seasonal evidence for any royal funeral.
That result is a good illustration of how much information sits in material that earlier excavators would have discarded. The tomb also produced grain, bread, dried fruit, dates, melon seeds, and more than a hundred baskets of provisions, alongside boxes containing prepared cuts of meat and poultry, mummified in the same manner as the king. The food offerings document diet, agriculture, and the practical expectations attached to the afterlife. The wine jars, labeled with vintage year, estate, and chief vintner, provided the chronological evidence for the length of the reign, which is discussed alongside the rest of the king’s chronology in the profile of Tutankhamun himself.
The fifth gain is art historical. The objects span the transition from Amarna style to restored orthodoxy, and several pieces carry both the Aten and the Amun forms of the royal names. The gilded throne shows the royal couple beneath the sun disc in the intimate compositional manner of the Amarna workshops. Other pieces are fully traditional. The assemblage therefore dates the stylistic transition materially rather than by inference, and it feeds directly into the analysis in the study of Amarna art and its revolution in style, while the period as a whole is set out in the pillar on the Amarna period of ancient Egypt.
The sixth gain is negative and equally valuable: the tomb established a ceiling on inference. Because we now know what a modest king’s burial contained, claims about the wealth of Egyptian royal burials can be calibrated rather than guessed. Tutankhamun ruled roughly a decade and was omitted from the king lists. If his burial contained this, then the burials of Thutmose III, Amenhotep III, and Ramesses II, all of whom ruled far longer with far greater resources, were of an order not recoverable by imagination. The tomb is not the summit of Egyptian royal wealth. It is a sample from near the bottom, and it is the only sample there is.
The Limits: What the Excavation Cost
An honest account of a discovery has to include the damage, and KV62 carries a substantial ledger of loss, some of it unavoidable and some of it not.
The most serious single act of destruction was the treatment of the body in 1925. Large quantities of resinous unguent had been poured over the mummy inside the innermost coffin, and over three thousand years this had set into a hard black mass that cemented the wrappings, the body, and the gold coffin together. Heat was applied without effect, and solvents were considered and rejected. The decision taken was to remove the body in pieces. The examination separated the head from the trunk and detached the limbs, and the jewelry and amulets wrapped into the bandages were recovered by cutting.
The consequences run through everything written about the king’s health and death since. Damage observed on the body afterward now has at least three possible origins: injury in life, damage during ancient embalming, and damage in 1925. The fracture of the left femur that underpins the leading hypothesis about how the king died is contested precisely because a violent separation of a resin-cemented limb could produce it. The mummy’s anterior chest wall, present in photographs from the 1920s and absent later, appears to have been removed after the excavation, most probably by someone taking the beaded collar. A body that should have been the best documented human remains from the ancient world was compromised at the moment of its examination.
The second loss is publication. Carter produced a three-volume popular account, written with assistance, but never completed the full scientific publication of the tomb. He died in 1939 with the work undone. The record survived in the form of the object cards, plans, photographs, and notes, which were deposited in Oxford and have been made available to scholars, but the synthesis that should have followed the excavation did not appear from the excavator, and much of the material waited decades for detailed study by others. Some categories of object were not studied properly for two generations.
The third issue is more uncomfortable and is now well documented: objects from the tomb entered private hands. A number of small items with clear or probable KV62 origin were found among Carter’s effects after his death and were subsequently returned to Egypt, and further pieces have been identified in museum collections with problematic provenance. The scale is small relative to over five thousand catalogued objects, and the circumstances of individual pieces vary, but the pattern is real and it sits awkwardly beside the excavation’s reputation for method.
What has been lost that cannot be recovered?
The stratigraphic and organic detail of the corridor fill, much of the fragile textile removed under field conditions, the anatomical integrity of the body, and any information the intact mummy might have yielded to techniques developed later. Recording standards in 1922 were exceptional for their time and thin by later ones.
That last point is the fair way to frame the whole ledger. Carter’s excavation was substantially better than the practice of its era and would fail a modern review. Judging it by later standards is anachronistic; refusing to state what was lost is dishonest. Both things can be held at once, and a student who can hold them is doing history rather than hagiography or debunking.
The Team Behind the Excavation
The discovery is remembered as one man’s, and the excavation was not. Understanding who did what is necessary both for fairness and for grasping why the work reached the standard it did.
Arthur Mace, an English archaeologist attached to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Egyptian expedition, joined in the first season and became Carter’s principal collaborator on the recording and conservation of objects. He had extensive field experience and a temperament markedly easier than Carter’s, and he handled much of the delicate physical work of consolidating and lifting fragile material from the antechamber. Ill health forced him out of the project after a few years.
Harry Burton, also of the Metropolitan expedition, is the figure whose contribution has grown in estimation over time. His photographs of the tomb are not illustrations; they are the primary record. He worked with large format cameras, mirrors and reflected sunlight in the corridor and chambers, and long exposures, and he produced images that preserve the spatial relationships of objects in place with a clarity no drawing could match. Photographic historians regard the KV62 series as among the finest archaeological photography ever produced, and Egyptologists use it as evidence continuously.
Alfred Lucas, a chemist in Egyptian government service, supplied the conservation science. He analyzed the resins, unguents, pigments, metals, and textiles, developed the field treatments that made removal possible, and published extensively on ancient Egyptian materials and industries. Much of what is known about Egyptian technology in general derives from his work on this and other material.
Arthur Callender, an engineer and old friend of Carter’s, handled the practical and structural problems, including the dismantling of the nested shrines in a chamber with almost no working space and the rigging required to lift the coffin lids.
James Henry Breasted and Alan Gardiner supplied the philology, reading the seal impressions and the inscriptions. Breasted’s analysis of the necropolis sealings established the sequence of ancient intrusions and resealings, which is the foundation of everything said about the tomb’s survival. Percy Newberry examined the botanical material. Douglas Derry and Saleh Bey Hamdi carried out the anatomical examination of the body. Later, Lindsley Hall and Walter Hauser produced the measured plans and drawings.
Alongside these named specialists worked the Egyptian workforce, whose contribution the published record treats thinly. The excavation employed a substantial local team, and the foremen, several of them from families with generations of experience in Theban archaeology, ran the daily operation of clearing, carrying, and guarding. It was a workman on that team who found the first step. Their names appear rarely in the accounts written at the time, and recovering them has been a strand of recent scholarship on the history of Egyptology.
Why does the composition of the team matter?
Because it explains the quality of the result. A photographer, a chemist, a conservator, an engineer, and two philologists working together on a single deposit was an unusual concentration of expertise in 1922, and it is the reason the record survives in a form that still supports research a century later.
The point generalizes. Excavation is destructive: a site can be dug only once, and everything not recorded is lost permanently. The value of a dig is therefore determined by the documentation it produces, and documentation of that quality requires specialists. Carter’s most consequential decision was not lifting the candle to the hole in the doorway. It was refusing to empty the antechamber until he had assembled people who could record it properly.
The Clearance Season by Season
Setting the ten years out in sequence makes the scale of the operation intelligible in a way that summary does not.
The first season, from November 1922 into the spring of 1923, was devoted almost entirely to the antechamber. The room was photographed, planned, and cleared object by object, with each item numbered, described, drawn, treated where necessary, and carried to the laboratory tomb for further work. The season closed with the opening of the sealed doorway to the burial chamber in February, an event conducted before an official audience, followed by preliminary inspection rather than clearance. Carnarvon died in April.
The second season, from late 1923, concentrated on the burial chamber. The wall between it and the antechamber was removed to allow access, and the four nested shrines were dismantled. This was the most physically demanding phase of the entire excavation. The shrine panels were large, heavy, gilded over gesso that flaked at a touch, and had to be lifted apart in a space so tight that the outermost shrine stood within a few centimeters of the walls. The work required Callender’s engineering and weeks of effort, and it ended with the quartzite sarcophagus exposed.
The season was cut short. In February 1924 the dispute with the Antiquities Service reached its crisis, Carter closed the tomb and left, and the government took control of the site. Work did not resume until the beginning of 1925, and the sarcophagus lid, raised before the walkout, had spent the interval suspended on its tackle.
The third and fourth seasons, through 1925 and into 1926, dealt with the coffins and the body. The three nested coffins were separated, a process complicated by the hardened resin, and the mummy was examined and dismembered in November 1925. The body was afterward returned to the outermost coffin and to the sarcophagus, where it has remained.
The following seasons, through the later 1920s, cleared the treasury and then the annexe. The treasury held the canopic equipment, the shrines, the model boats, and the shabtis, and its clearance was slow because of the density and fragility of the material. The annexe was the worst room in the tomb from a working point of view: it was small, its contents had been thrown into complete disorder by robbers, objects were piled several deep and interlocked, and there was no floor space to stand on. Clearing it required working from a suspended platform and removing items in an order dictated by their physical support of one another.
The final phase, into 1932, covered the completion of conservation, the packing and transport of objects to Cairo, and the closing of the site. Transport was itself a substantial operation, with cases carried on a light railway laid across the valley floor and then by river.
How long did the work take in total?
About ten years from the first step to the last object, of which roughly eight were active field seasons and one was lost to the concession dispute. For comparison, the antechamber alone, a room of modest size, occupied a complete season, and the crowded annexe took two seasons more.
Those durations are the practical answer to anyone who imagines archaeology as discovery. The discovery occupied three weeks. The excavation occupied a decade, and the study of what the excavation produced has occupied the century since.
How Historians Actually Use KV62
A source is only as good as the method applied to it, and the methods used on this tomb are worth setting out because they generalize to every archaeological deposit a student will encounter.
The first method is contextual reading. An object’s meaning in an Egyptian burial depends on where it sat, what it sat beside, and which direction it faced. A wooden figure is a votive item, a servant statuette, a divine image, or a piece of ritual equipment depending on its placement and its accompanying text. Because Carter’s team recorded position before removal, KV62 supports this kind of reading in a way that museum collections assembled from the antiquities market never can. An object without a findspot has lost most of its evidentiary value, however beautiful it is, and this tomb is the standing demonstration of why.
The second method is seal analysis. The plaster seals on the doorways, on the shrine doors, and on individual boxes carry impressions from stamps belonging to the royal necropolis administration and to the king personally. Reading them establishes who closed what and in what order, and the presence of necropolis seals over robbers’ breaches is what proves official intervention after the intrusions. Sealings are administrative documents rather than art, and they answer questions that no amount of looking at gold will settle.
The third method is comparative typology. Objects from KV62 are compared with those from other tombs of the period, from private burials, and from settlement contexts, to establish which forms are royal, which are general, which are Amarna in style, and which are traditional. This is how the transitional character of the assemblage was demonstrated, and it is how individual pieces suspected of having been made for someone else were identified.
How can anyone tell that objects were reused?
By inscriptions. Several items from the tomb carry cartouches that have been altered, with an earlier royal name erased and Tutankhamun’s substituted, and traces of the original are sometimes recoverable. Some faces on coffins and canopic figures do not match the king’s securely identified portraits.
The candidates most often discussed are the second coffin, whose facial features differ noticeably from the innermost coffin and the mask, and the miniature canopic coffins, whose inscriptions show alteration. The name most frequently proposed as the original owner is Neferneferuaten, the ruler with a female epithet who appears at the end of the Amarna sequence. Whether the reuse reflects a hurried burial drawing on stock made for a predecessor, or a deliberate appropriation, or the normal practice of royal workshops holding finished pieces, is argued rather than settled. What is not in dispute is that alteration occurred, and that is a conclusion reached purely by close reading of inscriptions.
The fourth method is scientific analysis of materials. Metallurgy on the gold and the iron, chemical analysis of the unguents and resins, species identification of woods and plants, fiber analysis on textiles, and radiographic and tomographic imaging of the wrapped and sealed objects have all been applied over the decades since the excavation. Much of the most interesting work on this tomb was done long after the last object left it, using techniques Carter could not have imagined, on material his team preserved well enough to be studied. That is the strongest argument available for careful excavation: the questions of the future cannot be anticipated, and only the material survives to answer them.
The fifth method is archival. The excavation records themselves are now a historical source studied in their own right. Comparing Carter’s journal entries with Burton’s photographs, with Mace’s notes, and with correspondence has produced revisions to the accepted narrative of the discovery, including the evidence bearing on the unofficial entry to the burial chamber. A student should take the general lesson: the documentation of an excavation is evidence about the excavators as well as about the site, and the two must be read together.
What Remains Debated
Several questions about the tomb and its discovery are genuinely open, and distinguishing them from the settled parts is the mark of a well-informed reader.
Whether Carter and Carnarvon entered the burial chamber before the official opening is contested. The physical evidence is a repaired robbers’ hole in the sealed doorway between the antechamber and the burial chamber, which appears in some photographs concealed behind a basket and reeds. Correspondence and later testimony from within the excavation circle support an unofficial entry. Defenders point out that Carter had legitimate reasons to inspect the state of the chamber and that no evidence of removal from it exists. The balance of opinion leans toward an unofficial entry having occurred, and the consequence is not theft but a gap between the published account and what happened.
Whether the tomb was originally intended for Tutankhamun is argued. Its small scale, private-tomb plan, undecorated rooms, and hasty finishing all suggest an adaptation. The tomb in the western valley used by Ay is a candidate for the one intended for the king, and KV62 a candidate for one intended for a private person or for Ay himself. The evidence is architectural and circumstantial, and no document settles it.
Whether there are further chambers behind the burial chamber walls has been tested and remains unresolved in the minds of some. The proposal arose from analysis of high resolution scans of the painted walls, which appeared to show linear features consistent with blocked doorways, and it was accompanied by the suggestion that the additional space might contain the burial of Nefertiti. Radar surveys produced conflicting results, with an early survey reported as showing anomalies and a later and more rigorous survey finding no evidence of voids. The weight of the geophysical evidence is against hidden chambers, and the proposal is best described as tested and not supported rather than as an open mystery.
Was the water boy story true?
Almost nothing supports it. Carter’s own excavation journal describes the step being found in the course of clearing the workmen’s huts, without reference to a boy or a water jar. The story appears later, circulates in incompatible versions, and functions as the kind of folk narrative that attaches itself to famous discoveries.
The story is worth examining rather than dismissing outright, because its persistence tells us something about how discoveries are narrated. The documented version, a planned clearance of a defined area reaching bedrock, is methodical and unromantic. The folk version supplies an accident, an innocent, and a reward, which is a far more satisfying shape for a story. Similar narratives attach to other famous finds. A reader who notices the pattern has acquired a useful instrument for evaluating claims about discovery in general.
The precise number of objects is also, mildly, in dispute, because the answer depends on what counts as an object. Carter’s card index numbers run into the thousands, but a single number could cover a group of similar items, and subsequent recounts using different conventions produce different totals. Any figure quoted to the exact unit should be treated as convention rather than as a fact about the tomb.
Finally, the ownership and location history of a small number of pieces remains under investigation, and identifications of KV62 material in collections outside Egypt continue to be made and contested. This is an active area rather than a closed one.
Where the Objects Went
The entire contents of KV62 remained in Egypt, which was neither inevitable nor uncontested at the time, and the story of what happened to the objects afterward is part of the history of the discovery.
Under the concession arrangements that had governed foreign excavation in Egypt for decades, an excavator could ordinarily expect a division of finds, with the antiquities administration selecting items for the national collection and the excavator retaining a share. Carnarvon had invested heavily over many seasons on that understanding. The rules included an exception for intact tombs, which the state could claim in full, and the status of KV62 under that exception was the substance of the dispute that closed the excavation in 1924.
The political context decided it. Egypt had been declared independent in 1922, and the assertion of national control over antiquities was one of the more visible expressions of the new sovereignty. The Antiquities Service under Pierre Lacau took a firm position, the concession was cancelled during the walkout, and when work resumed in 1925 it did so on terms under which Carnarvon’s widow renounced any claim to a share. The estate received financial compensation some years later. Not one object from the tomb was legally exported.
The objects went to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, where the mask, the coffins, the shrines, the throne, and the principal jewelry were displayed and became the most visited holdings in the country. The sarcophagus and the outermost coffin remained in the tomb with the mummy, which is where the king still lies, later placed in a climate-controlled case within the burial chamber. Over the following decades the collection was studied, conserved, and eventually prepared for transfer to purpose-built accommodation as Egypt developed its museum infrastructure.
The objects also traveled. Loan exhibitions of selected pieces toured internationally across several decades and drew audiences on a scale museums had not previously experienced, establishing the template for the modern blockbuster exhibition. Those tours are a significant part of why the tomb occupies the place it does in global awareness, and they carried real costs as well as revenues, since every movement of fragile material involves risk and the conservation debate around touring the most delicate pieces has been continuous.
What happened to the funerary mask?
It went to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and became the single most recognized object from the ancient world. Made of gold in two joined sections, inlaid with lapis lazuli, carnelian, obsidian, turquoise, and colored glass, it carries a funerary text on its back and shoulders and weighs on the order of ten kilograms.
The mask has had an eventful modern life. It was removed from the mummy during the 1925 examination, a process that required cutting because the resin had adhered it to the head and shoulders, and the marks of that separation are part of its condition history. Much later it suffered damage to its plaited beard, which was reattached during a botched repair and subsequently corrected by a specialist conservation team using proper materials and technique. That episode became a public controversy about conservation standards and about the pressures museums face to keep famous objects on display.
The story of the mask is a compressed version of the story of the whole find. An object made for a king nobody remembered became the emblem of an entire civilization because it was the one that survived, and everything that has happened to it since has been shaped by the weight of that accidental celebrity.
The Discovery’s Wider Consequences
The find changed things well beyond Egyptology, and a serious assessment has to account for effects in four areas.
The first is the discipline itself. The standard of recording Carter’s team applied, and above all the systematic photographic documentation of objects in place, raised expectations permanently. The archive that resulted has supported research for generations, including research on questions nobody in 1922 was asking. The negative lesson was equally influential: the failure to produce a full scientific publication became a standing cautionary example, and funding bodies and antiquities authorities have since built publication obligations into permissions precisely because of cases like this one.
The second is the legal and political framework governing antiquities. The retention of the entire assemblage by Egypt marked the practical end of the partage system for major finds in that country, and the principle that significant national heritage is not divisible with foreign excavators spread from there. Any modern discussion of repatriation, of excavation permits, and of national ownership of cultural property runs back through this episode.
The third is popular culture. The wave of enthusiasm that followed the discovery reached architecture, fashion, jewelry, graphic design, and cinema, and the decorative vocabulary of the period absorbed Egyptian motifs on a scale not seen since the Napoleonic expedition. The mummy film as a genre draws directly on the curse story. Public perception of what archaeology is, and of what archaeologists do, was shaped by newspaper coverage of this excavation more than by any other single event, and the resulting image of the discipline as treasure hunting has been a persistent problem for a field that is mostly concerned with potsherds and soil layers.
The fourth is Egyptian national culture. The discovery arrived in the same year as the declaration of independence, and the pharaonic past became a resource in the construction of a national identity, with the tomb and its contents functioning as a public assertion that this heritage belonged to Egypt and would be kept there. The dispute with Carter was reported in the Egyptian press in those terms at the time. The tourism economy that grew around the Theban west bank and around the Cairo collection is a direct consequence, and it remains one of the country’s significant industries.
Why did this discovery capture the public imagination so completely?
Because it combined an intact royal burial, gold in quantity, a photogenic object in the mask, a death that could be dressed as supernatural, and a press system capable of distributing images worldwide within days. No previous archaeological find had all five, and none since has matched the combination.
The comparison worth making is with the tomb of Yuya and Thuya, found in the same valley in 1905, which was substantially intact and contained fine funerary equipment. It is barely known outside the field. It lacked a royal occupant, a solid gold assemblage, an exclusive press contract, a dead earl, and a global photographic distribution network at the moment of discovery. The difference in fame between the two finds is a lesson in how public knowledge of the past is actually produced, and it is not a lesson about historical importance.
Carter’s Own Accounts and Their Reliability
Most popular knowledge of the discovery descends from Carter’s published narrative, and a sources article owes the reader an assessment of it.
The three-volume account that appeared under Carter’s name from 1923 onward was written for a general readership, with the first volume drafted substantially by Arthur Mace, whose prose was better than Carter’s and whose contribution was acknowledged on the title page. It is a good book: clear, well organized, generous about the technical difficulties, and illustrated with Burton’s photographs. It is also a work of advocacy, produced while the excavation was in progress and while its funding, its concession, and its public standing were under active dispute.
Three kinds of caution apply. The first concerns omission. The account does not describe an unofficial entry to the burial chamber, and the physical and documentary evidence indicating that one occurred is absent from it. Whatever the merits of the underlying question, the published narrative is not a complete record of what the excavators did.
The second concerns the Egyptian dimension. The account gives little space to the Egyptian workforce, names few of them, and treats the dispute with the Antiquities Service largely as obstruction rather than as a sovereignty question with a serious case behind it. That framing was conventional for its time and place, and reading it critically is now a routine part of using the source.
The third concerns the ordering of the narrative for effect.
