Read down the verdict column and the shape of the honest answer emerges. Where the transmission is physical, technical, and checkable, it is often real and sometimes dramatic. Where it is doctrinal, abstract, and dependent on testimony, it thins out rapidly. That is not a coincidence, and it is the single most useful pattern in the whole subject.

Why the Greeks inflated the debt

If the transmission was narrower than the ancient testimony claims, the testimony itself needs explaining. Greeks were not lying, and they had no obvious motive to diminish their own achievement. Four mechanisms account for the inflation.

The first was historiographical: that earlier European scholarship had replaced an older model, in which Greeks themselves credited Egyptian and Phoenician influence, with a model emphasizing northern origins and Greek autonomy, and that this replacement was driven substantially by the racial and romantic nationalist ideologies of the period rather than by new evidence. The second was substantive: that Egyptian and Phoenician influence on early Greece was far more extensive than accepted scholarship allowed, including claims about settlement, extensive linguistic borrowing, and the derivation of Greek religious and mythological material.

The reception separated along that seam, and it is important to state both sides at their strongest.

The case made by the work’s defenders is that the historiographical argument identified something real and uncomfortable. Nineteenth century classical scholarship did operate in an environment saturated with racial theory, some of its practitioners did express views that would now be recognized as racist, and the discipline had not systematically examined how those assumptions might have shaped its conclusions. Raising that question forced a productive reckoning, encouraged renewed attention to Near Eastern and Egyptian contexts for early Greece, and coincided with a broader scholarly shift toward treating the Aegean as part of an eastern Mediterranean world rather than as a separate case. Defenders also argue that the substantive claims, whatever their individual merits, were offered as hypotheses inviting investigation.

The case made by the work’s critics is that the substantive arguments did not survive technical scrutiny. Specialists in historical linguistics disputed the proposed etymologies on methodological grounds, arguing that the derivations did not follow established principles of sound correspondence. Archaeologists and Bronze Age specialists disputed the settlement claims as unsupported by the material record. Egyptologists questioned particular readings of Egyptian evidence. Critics also argued that the historiographical case, while containing valid observations, overstated the coherence and the motivation of the shift it described, and that some of the scholars implicated had reached their conclusions on evidential grounds. A substantial critical volume gathered these responses, and a separate work by a classicist addressed the broader popular claims about Greek philosophy being taken from Egypt.

The author responded to the criticism at length in a further volume, defending some claims, adjusting others, and disputing the fairness of particular characterizations. The exchange was extended and at times sharp.

Is the claim that Greece stole from Egypt true?

Not as usually stated. Real transmission occurred in sculpture, architecture, the calendar, practical mathematics, and medicine, and Greeks themselves credited Egypt freely. But the strong claim that Greek philosophy and science were taken from Egyptian sources and concealed is not supported by the surviving evidence, and the theft framing misdescribes how the borrowing actually worked.

Where does that leave a reader wanting a defensible position? Three statements can be made with reasonable confidence, and it is worth being explicit about which parts remain contested.

The historiographical point is widely accepted in outline: earlier classical scholarship was shaped by its intellectual environment, that environment included racial theory, and the discipline benefited from examining the resulting assumptions. Scholars disagree about how much of the shift in emphasis was ideologically driven and how much followed from evidence, and that disagreement continues.

The substantive linguistic and settlement claims did not achieve acceptance among the relevant specialists, and the technical objections raised against them have not been generally overturned. Supporters maintain that some objections reflected disciplinary conservatism; critics maintain they reflected method. A reader is entitled to weigh that dispute, but should know that the balance of specialist opinion did not move.

And the broader popular claim that Greek philosophy was stolen from Egyptian mystery schools rests on assertions that can be checked and that fail when checked. The most frequently repeated version, involving a Greek philosopher looting the great Alexandrian library, is chronologically impossible, since the philosopher in question died before the library existed and there is no evidence he ever traveled to Egypt. That the popular version is false does not settle the scholarly question, and conflating the two is a mistake made in both directions.

The erasure problem

Having spent that much space on the limits of the maximalist case, honesty requires equal attention to the opposite error, which is real and has done real damage.

The minimalist position, in its strong form, treats Greek achievement as substantially self-generated and the surrounding older civilizations as background. That position is not supportable on the evidence set out in this article. The sculptural transmission alone refutes it. So does the calendar. So does the medical reputation attested in the earliest Greek literature. So does the alphabet’s ancestry. So does the Mesopotamian foundation of Greek mathematical astronomy. A Greece that borrowed nothing significant from its neighbors is not the Greece the evidence describes.

The minimalist error also has a subtler and more common form, which is to acknowledge the borrowings in principle while consistently framing them as raw material that only became significant when Greeks transformed it. That framing is not exactly false, since the transformations were real, but it systematically converts every acknowledged debt into further evidence of Greek distinctiveness, which makes the position unfalsifiable.

The most useful corrective is to notice that the Greeks themselves did not hold the minimalist view. They credited Egypt loudly and repeatedly, sometimes wrongly, and they did so at a time when they had direct access to Egypt and considerable knowledge of it. A modern account that is more insistent on Greek autonomy than Greek writers themselves were should prompt a question about where that insistence is coming from.

Why does this debate get so heated?

Because it sits on top of a real history of racially motivated scholarship and a real modern reaction to it. Nineteenth century classicism developed alongside racial theory, and questions about African and Near Eastern contributions to Greece were never purely technical. Both the maximalist and minimalist positions carry that history, which is why evidential disputes escalate quickly.

What a fair method looks like

Since the topic generates more heat than most, it helps to state explicitly the criteria this article has used, so a reader can apply them independently to any claim they encounter.

The first criterion is chronology. A transmission requires that the source have the thing before the recipient acquires it, and that contact exist in the interval. This sounds trivial and it eliminates a surprising number of claims immediately, including the story about the looted Alexandrian library and any assertion that Greek divine names came from Egypt when those names appear in Greek records centuries before sustained contact.

The second is specificity. Generic similarity proves nothing, because independent invention and shared human circumstance produce parallels everywhere. What indicates transmission is arbitrary specificity: a convention that could have taken many forms taking the same particular form in both places. The kouros pose qualifies. A shared interest in geometry does not.

The third is mechanism. A claimed transmission needs a plausible route: people who traveled, objects that moved, texts that circulated, or craftsmen who trained. Where a mechanism is documented, as it is abundantly for Egypt and the Greek world from the seventh century BCE onward, transmission claims become easier to sustain. Where none exists, the claim needs correspondingly stronger evidence.

The fourth is source distance. Testimony written close to the events, by people with access, is worth more than testimony written centuries later by people building a legend. Applied to the traveling sage tradition, this criterion is what separates the plausible cases from the fabricated ones, and it does so without requiring any prior view about how much Greece owed Egypt.

The fifth is symmetry of scrutiny. Whatever standard is applied to claims of Egyptian influence should be applied equally to claims of Greek originality. If late and unreliable testimony cannot establish that a philosopher studied in Egypt, then equally the absence of such testimony cannot establish that he did not. If arbitrary formal similarity establishes borrowing in sculpture, the same reasoning must be allowed elsewhere.

Applied consistently, these criteria produce the domain-by-domain verdicts in the table above, and they produce them without needing to decide in advance whether one wants the answer to be large or small. That is the point of having criteria.

The reversal after Alexander

One feature of the whole question is routinely overlooked and it changes the framing considerably: the direction of influence reversed.

Before Alexander, Egypt was the older, larger, more institutionally developed civilization, and Greeks arriving there came as employees, merchants, and students of a culture they regarded as senior. After 332 BCE, a Greek-speaking dynasty ruled Egypt, Greek became the language of administration, and the intellectual traffic ran the other way. The Ptolemaic capital became the leading center of Greek scholarship in the world, with its research institution and its library, and the mathematical, astronomical, medical, and philological work done there was Greek work performed in Egypt rather than Egyptian work transmitted to Greeks. That institution and its output are treated in the accounts of the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria and of science and learning in ancient Alexandria.

This creates a genuine analytical hazard, because the later situation is far better documented than the earlier one and it is easy to read backward. A reader who knows that Alexandria was a center of ancient learning, and knows Alexandria is in Egypt, can slide into concluding that Greek science came from Egypt. What Alexandria demonstrates is almost the opposite: that Greek intellectual culture, transplanted into Egypt with royal funding, produced its most spectacular results there.

The genuinely Egyptian contribution to that later period is real but different in kind. Egyptian material resources funded it. Egyptian papyrus supplied the medium. Egyptian priestly scholarship contributed to specific projects, most notably a history of Egypt written in Greek by an Egyptian priest for a Ptolemaic king, which remains a significant source. And Egyptian religion supplied material for the composite cults that spread outward. But the mathematics, the astronomy, the textual criticism, and the medicine belong to the Greek tradition.

Holding both periods in view produces the correct overall shape. There was a long earlier phase in which Egypt was the senior partner and Greeks took what they could use, and a later phase in which the political relationship inverted and the intellectual traffic followed. Claims about Egyptian influence on Greek thought belong to the first phase, and evidence drawn from the second does not support them.

What Egypt actually gave

Setting the polemics aside, it is worth stating positively what the older civilization contributed, because the corrective emphasis of the preceding sections could leave a misleading impression of a small debt.

Egypt gave the Greek world a working model of what a large, literate, administratively sophisticated, monumentally building state looked like, sustained over a timespan that dwarfed anything in Greek experience. That mattered independently of any specific technique transferred. A Greek visitor encountering Egyptian temples, records, bureaucracy, and continuity was seeing possibilities his own world had not realized, and the impression that made is visible in Greek writing about Egypt from the earliest period onward.

It gave a formal vocabulary for monumental representation in stone that Greek sculptors adopted wholesale and then spent two centuries transforming. Without that starting point, the trajectory of Greek art would have been different in ways impossible to specify but certain to be significant.

It gave a calendrical instrument that Greek astronomy used throughout its history because nothing better was available.

It gave a body of practical mathematical technique and a demonstrated tradition of applying measurement to land, building, and administration, which is the substrate on which a more abstract mathematics could be built.

It gave pharmacological knowledge and a medical reputation so strong that it appears in the earliest surviving Greek poetry.

It gave, through a long indirect chain, the principle of alphabetic writing.

And it gave a permanent reference point, a standing example of deep antiquity against which Greek thinkers measured their own recency, which shaped Greek intellectual self-understanding in ways that have nothing to do with any specific doctrine transmitted.

That is a substantial list. It is not the maximalist claim, but nobody looking at it honestly could call it minor.

The honest verdict

The real-but-inflated thesis is the defensible position, and it can be stated in three parts.

Egypt genuinely influenced Greek culture and thought, demonstrably and in specific domains: the form of monumental sculpture, the move to monumental stone architecture, the calendar used by Greek astronomers, practical mathematical and surveying technique, pharmacological and clinical medical knowledge, and, at one remove through Phoenician mediation, the alphabet itself. These are not speculative. They are supported by objects, by technical literature, and by documented contact.

The ancient Greek claims about that influence were nonetheless inflated, because attributing wisdom to Egypt served rhetorical and legitimating purposes in Greek intellectual culture. The traveling sage tradition grows more elaborate the further it gets from its subjects, the claim about divine names is refuted by Bronze Age Greek records, and the philosophical transmission that ancient sources assert most confidently is the one with the least supporting evidence.

Some modern claims have inflated it further, extending real transmission into areas the evidence does not reach and framing the relationship as theft, which misdescribes a process that was open, acknowledged by the Greeks at the time, and typical of how neighboring civilizations always interact. At the same time, the opposite modern tendency, treating Greek achievement as self-generated, is equally unsupported and has its own compromised history.

What remains after both corrections is not a compromise position arrived at by splitting the difference. It is a domain-by-domain assessment in which some claims are strongly supported, some are false, and some are genuinely uncertain, and the honest answer differs by domain rather than resolving into a single number. Anyone who wants one figure for how much Greece owed Egypt is asking a question the evidence cannot answer.

One last observation is worth carrying away. The Greeks who lived in Egypt, traded there, served in its armies, and buried their dead in its soil had no difficulty acknowledging that they were living beside something older and in many respects greater than anything they had built. That acknowledgment was not a threat to their sense of themselves. The anxiety about intellectual debt is a later development, on both sides of the argument, and the ancient participants in the exchange would have found it puzzling.

What Egyptian intellectual culture actually was

Assessing what Greeks could have taken from Egypt requires knowing what was there to take, and the answer is less familiar than it should be because Egyptian intellectual production does not map onto modern categories.

Egyptian learning was housed in institutions attached to temples, known in Egyptian by a term meaning house of life, which functioned as scriptoria, archives, and training centers. Personnel there copied, composed, and maintained texts covering ritual, medicine, magic, astronomy, and the technical knowledge the state required. This was a professional institutional culture of learning with continuity measured in millennia, and its output was substantial.

The texts fall into recognizable categories. Ritual and funerary literature was the largest, covering the elaborate procedures for managing death and the afterlife. Medical texts combined clinical observation with pharmacology and incantation. Mathematical texts presented worked problems and procedures. Astronomical material served calendrical and ritual timekeeping. Onomastica listed and classified things in the world, which is a genuine intellectual activity of ordering knowledge. Wisdom literature offered instruction in conduct. Cosmological texts described the origin and structure of the world.

What is missing from this list is the category the maximalist claims most require: sustained argumentative prose in which positions are stated, objections raised, and conclusions defended. Egyptian texts assert, instruct, describe, and prescribe. They very rarely argue in the sense that a Greek philosophical text argues, and no surviving Egyptian text resembles a treatise defending a thesis against alternatives.

That absence is not a judgment about Egyptian intelligence and it should not be read as one. It reflects a different institutional setting for intellectual work. Egyptian learning was produced by a professional priestly and scribal class operating within a stable state, transmitting authoritative knowledge across generations. Disputation was not its function. The competitive public argument that characterizes early Greek intellectual life belongs to a different political environment, and the difference is structural rather than a matter of capacity.

Did Egypt have philosophy?

It had cosmology, ethics, and systematic knowledge of a high order, but not the argumentative disputation that characterizes Greek philosophy. Egyptian texts assert, instruct, and describe within an authoritative tradition rather than defending positions against alternatives. The difference reflects institutional setting rather than intellectual capacity, and it matters for what could be transmitted.

Wisdom literature and the ethics question

One category of Egyptian text deserves separate attention because it demonstrably did transmit, though not primarily to Greece.

Egyptian wisdom literature consists of instructional works, typically framed as a father teaching a son or an official instructing a successor, offering guidance on conduct: restraint in speech, honesty in dealings, treatment of subordinates, behavior at table, the management of ambition, and the acceptance of one’s place. These works span the whole of Egyptian history, some of them copied and recopied for well over a thousand years, and they represent a sustained ethical tradition of real sophistication.

The best documented transmission of this material runs to the Levant rather than to Greece. One Egyptian instructional text shows correspondences with a section of Hebrew wisdom literature that are close enough in content, sequence, and phrasing that most scholars accept a relationship, with the direction of borrowing generally taken to run from the Egyptian text to the Hebrew one. That case is worth citing precisely because it shows what a well evidenced textual transmission looks like: specific correspondences, in order, at a level of detail that coincidence does not explain.

Set that standard beside the claims about Greek philosophy and the contrast is instructive. Nobody has produced comparable correspondences between an Egyptian text and a Greek philosophical work. The absence is not decisive on its own, since transmission can be oral and since Egyptian texts have survived unevenly, but a maximalist claim would be far stronger if such a case existed, and its non-existence after considerable searching is evidence of a kind.

There is a further point about the ethics itself. Egyptian instructional literature and Greek ethical philosophy share a great many concerns, as any two ethical traditions will: honesty, moderation, the treatment of others, the dangers of anger and greed. Those shared concerns prove nothing about transmission, because they are the standing preoccupations of human social life. This is exactly the failure of the specificity criterion described earlier, and it is the most common way that superficial comparison generates false confidence about influence.

The cosmology case

The most tempting parallel in the whole subject involves the beginning of the world, and working through it carefully is a useful exercise in how to weigh a suggestive similarity.

Egyptian cosmological traditions describe creation emerging from a primordial watery expanse, undifferentiated and limitless, out of which the first land and the first god arise. Different centers elaborated the idea differently. One tradition centered on the sun god’s self-generation and the successive production of paired deities. Another described creation through the heart and the tongue of a creator god, that is, through conception and utterance. A third organized primordial reality into a set of paired forces representing aspects of the pre-created state.

The parallel that leaps out is with the earliest Greek natural philosophy, in which the Milesian thinker traditionally credited with founding the tradition is reported to have held that water is the origin of things. Water as the primordial substance, in a thinker from a city with direct Egyptian trade links, reported by later sources to have visited Egypt. The temptation to draw a line is considerable.

The temptation should be resisted, or at least heavily qualified, for three reasons.

First, water origins are widespread. Mesopotamian cosmology also begins with primordial waters, and Greek poetic tradition itself contains a strand making the encircling ocean the origin of the gods, independent of any philosophical development. A motif present in several neighboring traditions and in one’s own poetic inheritance cannot be traced to a single source.

Second, the claims are doing different work. Egyptian cosmology is theological narrative describing how the ordered world came from the unordered, populated by gods with names and relationships. The Milesian proposal, as far as it can be reconstructed, is a claim about the underlying material constitution of things, framed without divine agency. Those are not the same kind of statement even when they name the same substance.

Third, the reconstruction of what the early Greek thinker actually said is itself uncertain, resting on reports by later writers with their own interpretive frameworks. Building a transmission argument on top of a shaky reconstruction compounds the uncertainty.

The comparison involving creation through utterance and the later Greek concept of ordering reason has attracted similar attention, and it faces an additional problem: the dating of the principal Egyptian text expressing that idea is contested, with the surviving monument belonging to the first millennium BCE while claiming to reproduce a much older document. Scholars have differed considerably over whether the composition is genuinely ancient or substantially of the later period, and a transmission argument that depends on the earlier dating inherits the uncertainty.

Did Greek cosmology come from Egyptian creation myths?

The parallels are real but do not establish transmission. Egyptian cosmology begins with primordial waters, and the earliest Greek natural philosophy is reported to have proposed water as the origin of things. But Mesopotamian tradition and Greek poetry also feature water origins, the two kinds of claim are doing different work, and the Greek reconstruction rests on late reports.

Plato and the Egyptian example

Plato’s engagement with Egypt is worth examining on its own because it is better documented than any other philosopher’s and because it shows a Greek thinker using Egypt in a specific and revealing way.

Plato praises Egyptian art for having maintained the same canon of forms across an immense span without degradation, and he explicitly presents this as a model, arguing that a society which fixes its artistic standards protects itself from the corrupting effects of novelty. He describes Egyptian methods of teaching arithmetic and calculation to children through games and practical distribution, and recommends the approach. He treats the Egyptian division of society into fixed functional classes as an example of proper social organization. And he uses an Egyptian divine figure as a character in an argument about whether writing helps or harms memory and understanding.

Notice what these have in common. Every one of them concerns institutions, education, and social organization rather than metaphysical doctrine. Plato admires how Egypt arranges things, not what Egyptians believe about being, knowledge, or the soul. He is using Egypt as an example of successful cultural policy, in support of positions he holds on independent grounds.

That is a genuine and specific Egyptian influence on a major Greek thinker, and it is worth acknowledging as such. It is also very far from the claim that Platonic philosophy derives from Egyptian sources. A writer who cites a foreign society as a model for educational policy is not disclosing the origin of his metaphysics.

The Egyptian art canon he praises is real, and its stability is not a myth. Egyptian representational conventions did persist with remarkable consistency across millennia, governed by proportional systems and formal rules, changing at the margins while retaining recognizable continuity. Plato’s admiration was based on accurate observation of a genuinely unusual cultural achievement.

What the language evidence shows

Loanwords are among the most reliable indicators of cultural transmission available, because languages borrow words along with the things and ideas they receive, and the pattern of what gets borrowed is diagnostic.

Greek did borrow from Egyptian, and the borrowings are informative. They cluster heavily in concrete nouns: materials, plants, goods, vessels, place names, and things Egypt supplied. This is precisely the pattern one would expect from the commercial relationship described earlier, in which specific Egyptian products entered the Greek world through a licensed trading channel and arrived carrying their names with them.

What Greek did not borrow from Egyptian is abstract vocabulary. The technical terminology of Greek philosophy, mathematics, and medicine is built from Greek roots by Greek word formation. Terms for being, substance, cause, element, principle, proof, definition, soul, and virtue are Greek constructions, often visibly derived from ordinary Greek words repurposed for technical use. There is no stratum of Egyptian loanwords in the abstract vocabulary of Greek thought.

That absence carries real evidential weight, though it should not be overstated. Concepts can be transmitted without their words, through translation and paraphrase, and the argument from missing loanwords is not decisive by itself. But when a language borrows extensively for goods and not at all for concepts, the natural reading is that goods came and concepts largely did not. Combined with the absence of textual correspondences and the lateness of the traveling sage tradition, the linguistic pattern points the same way as the other evidence.

The reverse case is worth noting for contrast. Egyptian did acquire Greek vocabulary in later periods, once Greek became the administrative language and Greek institutions operated in Egypt, and the borrowing there extends well beyond trade goods into administration and daily life. That is what a language looks like when it is genuinely absorbing another culture’s conceptual apparatus, and the asymmetry between the two directions is itself an argument.

The Ionian setting

One further explanation deserves a hearing, because it addresses a real puzzle without invoking either Greek exceptionalism or Egyptian derivation.

The earliest Greek natural philosophy emerges in the Ionian cities of the Anatolian coast, in the sixth century BCE. Those cities were commercially connected in every direction: to Egypt through the Delta trading channel, to Mesopotamia and Persia through Anatolian overland routes, to Lydia next door, and to the whole Aegean and Black Sea world through their own colonial networks. They were, in short, the places where the most information from the most different sources was passing through the same hands.

They were also politically distinctive. Greek city-states of the period lacked the two institutions that dominated intellectual life in Egypt and Mesopotamia: a centralized monarchy commanding intellectual production and a professional priesthood holding authoritative knowledge. Greek religion had priests but no scriptural corpus, no theological authority capable of ruling on doctrine, and no monopoly on knowledge. Public affairs were conducted through open argument before an audience with the power to decide, which rewarded the ability to make a case and to defeat an opponent’s.

Put those two conditions together and a plausible structural account emerges of why the demonstrative style appeared where it did. A society receiving diverse and mutually incompatible claims from multiple older civilizations, and lacking any authority empowered to settle which was correct, has a practical need for a method of adjudicating between them. Argument that establishes conclusions from stated premises is exactly such a method.

This account has the advantage of explaining the Greek development without either crediting an innate quality or requiring a hidden source. It treats Greek argumentative method as a response to a particular situation, one feature of which was precisely the wealth of foreign material arriving from Egypt and elsewhere. On this reading, Egyptian influence is real and important, but its importance lies less in specific doctrines transmitted than in the fact that Egypt was one of several older traditions whose claims Greeks had to make sense of.

Why did demonstrative reasoning develop in Greece rather than Egypt?

Most plausibly because of institutional differences rather than intellectual ones. Egyptian learning was produced by a professional priestly class within a stable state, transmitting authoritative knowledge. Greek cities had no theological authority to settle disputes, conducted public affairs through open argument, and were receiving conflicting claims from several older civilizations at once, which created a practical need for methods of adjudication.

Sais and the meeting point

If foreign visitors did learn from Egyptian priests, the most likely setting can be identified, and identifying it sharpens the question considerably.

Sais in the western Delta was the seat of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty and the home of an important temple to the goddess Neith, and it sat on the same river branch as the licensed trading settlement. That combination made it the most accessible major religious center in Egypt for visitors arriving from the Aegean, and it is exactly where the ancient tradition places the priestly encounters, including the conversation that supplied the frame for a famous philosophical fiction.

An unusually informative document survives from that setting. An Egyptian official who served under the Persian kings after the conquest of 525 BCE left an inscribed statue recording his career, and among other things it records that he was instructed to restore the temple institution at Sais devoted to the scribal and medical arts, which had fallen into decline, and that he did so, reestablishing its personnel and its provision. That is direct evidence for the existence, the disruption, and the deliberate restoration of an Egyptian learned institution at precisely the place and period when foreign visitors were most likely to encounter one.

The document is valuable for a second reason. It shows an Egyptian official cooperating fully with a foreign conqueror, presenting that conqueror in proper pharaonic terms, and being rewarded with authority over religious and intellectual institutions. Whatever the priesthoods thought privately about foreign rule, and the Late Period furnishes plenty of evidence for resentment, the institutional accommodation was real. A learned establishment operating with royal backing under a foreign king was a place a foreign visitor might plausibly be received.

What the document does not show is any priest teaching philosophy to a visitor. It shows an institution of scribal and medical training being restored, which is entirely consistent with the picture assembled earlier: Egyptian intellectual culture was professional, textual, and technical, and the knowledge it held was of the kind that could be transmitted as technique.

Two claims, checked
