The courtyard solves the climate problem and the capacity problem together. The general point is that the hypostyle mosque is an efficient solution to a specific set of requirements rather than a style, and its persistence across centuries and regions reflects how well it solves them. Reading the plan as a response to use rather than as an aesthetic choice makes every feature explicable.
The Governors Who Built It
The men who ordered the successive rebuildings are worth a section of their own, because the pattern of who invested in the mosque and when is evidence about the province’s administration.
The founder was a conqueror establishing a settlement, and his mosque was an act of provision under the most constrained possible circumstances.

The second belongs to the administrative annexe founded after the change of ruling dynasty in the mid eighth century, a quarter built beside the existing settlement for a new regime’s officials, and its mosque served that quarter.
The third is the Tulunid mosque of the late 870s, built for the third foundation in the chain, and it is the earliest of the four to survive substantially as constructed.
The fourth belongs to the Fatimid capital founded in 969 and treated in the article on Fatimid Egypt, whose great mosque became the most important religious and educational institution in the country and remains so.
The sequence maps the northward movement of the capital region precisely, since each mosque marks the centre of a successive foundation, and the distance between the first and the last records how far the centre of Egyptian urban life travelled in three centuries.
The survival pattern across the four is informative. The first was rebuilt beyond recognition, the second is essentially lost, the third survives largely intact, and the fourth survives with heavy later additions. The variation correlates with how each quarter fared afterward rather than with the quality of the original building.
The functional succession matters as much as the physical one. Each new foundation’s mosque took over the primary congregational role from its predecessor, and each predecessor continued in use with a diminished but real function. That is why the earliest is still standing and still used: it was superseded rather than abandoned.
The general observation is that in a city that keeps moving, the old religious centres are left behind rather than destroyed, and a sequence of surviving great mosques is therefore a map of a capital’s migration. Reading the four together tells the story of Egyptian urban history more compactly than any narrative.
Restoration and the Question of Authenticity
The heavy restoration this building has undergone raises a question that applies to monuments everywhere, and it is worth confronting rather than sidestepping.
The problem can be stated simply. If a building is repaired, the repaired parts are new. If repair continues long enough, all the parts are new. At what point, if any, does it stop being the same building, and does the answer change if the repairs faithfully reproduce what was there?
One position holds that fabric is decisive, so a comprehensively rebuilt structure is a replica regardless of its plan or its continuity of use. On this view the standing mosque is a nineteenth century building on an old site and should be described as such.
A second position holds that form is decisive, so a building rebuilt to its original design remains itself in the way a repeatedly repaired ship does. On this view the enclosure is a ninth century building because that is the design it embodies.
A third position, the one this article adopts, holds that for a building in continuous institutional use neither fabric nor form settles the question, because the thing being identified is not primarily an object. A mosque is a place where a community assembles, and its identity is carried by the practice rather than by the walls.
The practical consequence is that all three descriptions are true of different aspects and that a careful account states which one it means. Saying the mosque dates from 641 is true of the foundation, false of the fabric and misleading without qualification.
Restoration philosophy has itself changed over time, and the nineteenth century campaign here belongs to an era that valued restoring a building to a coherent ideal state over preserving the accumulated evidence of its history. Later practice generally prefers minimal intervention and the preservation of layers, which produces a different kind of building and a different kind of evidence.
The loss involved in comprehensive restoration is real and it is evidential rather than aesthetic. Each replacement removes material that could have been studied, and a building rebuilt to look right yields less information than a damaged one left legible. That is the cost of the approach, and it was paid here.
Visiting and What to Look For
For a reader who will stand in the building, a short guide to what rewards attention, framed by everything above.
The courtyard is the first thing, and the useful exercise is to register its size against the description of the original hall. The whole first mosque would occupy a small fraction of the open court, and holding that comparison in mind converts an abstract statement about growth into something visible.
The columns repay close inspection precisely because they do not match. Different stones, different diameters, different capitals, levelled with bases and blocks of varying height, each one an object made for a Roman or Byzantine building and reused here. Reading the arcade as a collection of salvaged objects rather than as a designed composition is the correct way to see it.
The orientation is worth noting, since the alignment of the enclosure preserves a seventh century judgment about the direction of a distant city, made without instruments by men who had just arrived in the country.
The fabric should be approached sceptically. Most of what is visible is nineteenth century, and the honest posture is to assume that any given surface is modern unless there is specific reason to think otherwise.
The setting deserves attention as much as the building. The surrounding district was Egypt’s largest city for five centuries and is now a quiet quarter, and the churches and synagogue nearby indicate the mixed population that lived here.
The comparison with the Tulunid mosque a few kilometres north is the single most useful thing a visitor can do, since seeing both in one day makes the distinction between continuity of site and continuity of fabric concrete in a way no description achieves.
What not to expect is the last item. Nobody should arrive looking for seventh century architecture, and arriving instead to stand in the oldest continuously used place of Muslim prayer on the African continent is both accurate and a better reason to go.
What the Mosque Cannot Tell Us
Naming what a monument does not testify to is as valuable as listing what it does, and the limits here are unusually severe.
It cannot tell us what the first mosque looked like, since nothing of it survives and all description is late. Every statement about the original building is a report of what a source says, and the sources are separated from their subject by centuries.
It cannot tell us how large the early Muslim community was, despite the temptation to reason from building size to population. A mosque is built for the congregation its patron expects, which may be larger or smaller than the one that materializes, and the expansions record only that the previous capacity had been exceeded at some point.
It cannot tell us about conversion rates. The article on how Egyptians became Christian sets out why building evidence is a poor proxy for religious demography in general, and the same reasoning applies here: a mosque serving a garrison of soldiers and administrators says nothing about the surrounding countryside.
It cannot tell us about ordinary religious practice, since a great congregational mosque documents formal communal worship and leaves domestic and local practice invisible, which is the same limitation the article on pagan and Christian Egypt identifies for the earlier period.
It cannot tell us who paid for its construction in most phases, since attribution to a named patron records who ordered the work rather than where the money came from, and the fiscal arrangements behind a building campaign are rarely documented.
It cannot tell us what the building meant to the people who used it, which is the deepest limit. Attendance is not attitude, and a structure records that people came without recording why or what they thought.
The pattern in these limits is a general one about monuments. A building is excellent evidence for the resources, techniques and priorities of whoever built it, moderate evidence for the institution it housed, and poor evidence for the beliefs and experiences of the people inside. Arguments that run from architecture to mentality require support that the architecture itself cannot supply.
The Mosque and the Christian Population
The mosque’s relationship with the Christian community around it is a subject the sources touch on and it is worth handling explicitly, since the building stood in a district where most residents were not Muslim for centuries.
The demographic situation is the essential background. The article on how Egypt became Arabic speaking and the article on Copts under early Islamic rule both establish that the Muslim population of Egypt was a small minority for a long time after the conquest and that conversion was a process of centuries. A congregational mosque in the seventh and eighth centuries served a garrison and its dependants in a country whose population was overwhelmingly Christian.
The physical neighbourhood reflects that. Churches of considerable antiquity stand within a short walk of the mosque, along with a synagogue of similar age, and the concentration of early religious buildings of three communities in one district is a direct expression of a mixed population.
The relationship recorded in the sources is the ordinary mixture described in the article on Copts under early Islamic rule. Norms restricting the construction and repair of churches existed and were enforced episodically rather than consistently, since churches continued to be built and repaired in periods when the norms said they should not be.
Labour is one concrete point of contact. The workforce that built and rebuilt the mosque in the early centuries was drawn from the local population, which means Christian craftsmen and labourers worked on it, as they worked on virtually all construction in the country. The expertise for large scale building in Egypt lay where it had always lain.
The reused columns are another. Material taken from earlier structures included material from churches as well as from temples and civic buildings, and the general argument of the section on reuse applies: the practice was indiscriminate and economically driven, and reading a specific ideological intent into it requires specific evidence.
The general caution is against reading a monument as a statement about intercommunal relations. A mosque in a mixed district is primarily a building serving one community’s needs, and inferences about how that community regarded its neighbours are far better drawn from documents recording actual dealings, which the article on Copts under early Islamic rule sets out at length.
Building Materials and the Egyptian Constraint
The materials used in this mosque and its successors were determined by a geographical fact that has shaped Egyptian building for five thousand years, and it is worth setting out because it explains a great deal.
Egypt has abundant stone in specific places and abundant mud everywhere. The quarries of the Nile valley supplied the stone for the pharaonic monuments, and they are concentrated in particular locations well away from the Delta, which means stone construction requires transport and transport requires either the river or enormous effort.
Mud brick, by contrast, can be made anywhere there is silt and sun, which in the flood plain means everywhere, and it requires no specialized labour and no transport. It is accordingly the material of virtually all ordinary Egyptian building from the earliest periods onward, and the contrast between mud brick settlements and stone monuments is one of the oldest features of the country’s archaeology.
Timber is the scarce material. Egypt has no substantial forests, and structural timber for roofing had to come from imports or from palm trunks, which are poor structural material, being fibrous, irregular and limited in span. That scarcity is the reason Egyptian buildings tend toward narrow spans, many supports and vaulting in brick.
The first mosque used the cheap local combination of mud brick, palm and earth, which is what a garrison with no resources and an immediate need would use.
The reused classical columns of later phases solved the support problem elegantly, since a stone column already made requires no quarrying, no transport from a distant source and no timber, and Egypt’s stock of them was very large.
Fired brick, used in later Egyptian building including the Tulunid mosque, requires fuel for the kilns, which is itself scarce in a country without forests, so its use signals a patron with resources.
The consequence for survival is direct and it explains everything about the first mosque’s disappearance. Mud brick decays when unmaintained, palm rots, and a building of those materials that is not continuously repaired will be gone within a few generations. The demolition of the first mosque in the seventh century probably anticipated a failure that was coming anyway.
The general principle is that the materials available in a landscape determine which of its buildings can survive, and that the archaeological record of any region is therefore biased toward whatever its builders happened to make from durable stuff. Egypt’s stone monuments survive spectacularly and its ordinary buildings barely at all, and the same asymmetry operates within the Islamic period.
The Foundation Story and How to Handle It
The tent and dove tradition is the best known thing about this mosque and it is worth treating carefully, because the question of what to do with such stories comes up constantly in early Islamic history.
The story holds that the commander pitched his tent on the ground before marching north, that a dove built a nest in it, that he ordered the tent left standing so the bird would not be disturbed, and that on his return he took the preserved ground as the site of the mosque.
Its function is transparent once stated. It explains why the mosque stands where it does, connects the building to the conqueror personally, and attaches a memorable image of mercy toward a small creature to a man otherwise known for a military campaign. Every element does work.
Its historicity is unsupportable. It appears in later sources, it has no independent corroboration, and stories of this kind attach to notable sites in every tradition, typically explaining a location or a name with a vivid incident.
The temptation to split the difference should be resisted. Saying that the story is probably based on something is not a finding; it is a way of avoiding the question. Either there is evidence that a particular event occurred or there is not, and here there is not.
The more useful question is what the story’s existence tells us, and the answer is that the mosque’s connection to the conqueror mattered enough to generate an explanatory narrative. Communities do not invent foundation stories for buildings they consider unimportant, and the presence of the tradition is evidence about the site’s status rather than about its founding.
The comparison with other legendary material in this cluster is instructive. The article on the Arab conquest treats a famous story about a burned library and refuses it. The consistent approach is to identify what a story does, note when it appears, and decline to convert an appealing narrative into a fact.
The reader’s takeaway is a habit rather than a conclusion. When encountering a memorable anecdote about an ancient site, ask what it explains, when it is first recorded, and whether anything would be different if it were false. Stories that explain a name or a location and appear only in late sources are almost always doing literary rather than historical work.
The Governor’s Residence and the Missing Half
The mosque stood beside the seat of government, and the fate of that other building throws the mosque’s survival into relief.
The pairing was standard. A garrison settlement’s core contained the congregational mosque and the governor’s residence together, the two poles of public life, and in the earliest arrangements they often shared a wall or stood immediately adjacent.
The residence served as the administrative headquarters of the province, the place where governors held audience, where the treasury was kept and where the apparatus of government operated. In institutional terms it was at least as important as the mosque and arguably more so.
It is entirely gone, and not merely gone but gone without leaving a clear trace of its plan or extent, known only from description like the first mosque. No pilgrimage of visitors goes to see it because there is nothing to see.
The reason for the asymmetry is the one identified in the preceding article on the Tulunid capital. A seat of government is associated with a particular regime and becomes a target or a redundancy when that regime ends, while a mosque belongs to the community and passes intact from one authority to the next. Political buildings are contingent; religious ones are inherited.
The consequence for the historical record is systematic. What survives from the early Islamic period is disproportionately religious, which produces an impression of a society organized primarily around religion, when the missing administrative buildings would have told a story about taxation, justice and record keeping that the documentary evidence confirms was at least as central.

The Minaret Question
The towers added in the 670s are a genuinely interesting problem in architectural history and they deserve setting out, since this mosque sits close to the origin of a familiar form.
The minaret is so strongly associated with the mosque in the modern imagination that its absence from the earliest buildings is surprising. The call to prayer requires a raised position and a carrying voice, and the roof or the doorway serves adequately for a small congregation, so a dedicated tower is a refinement rather than a necessity.
Several origins have been proposed for the form. Church towers in Syria offered an existing model of a raised structure attached to a place of worship. Lighthouses offered another, and the word used for minaret in Arabic is related to the word for lighthouse, which is suggestive without being conclusive. The corner towers of Roman temple enclosures have also been proposed.
The towers added to this mosque in the 670s are among the earliest attested structures of the kind, and the account describes four of them, one at each corner. That arrangement is unlike the single tower familiar from later mosques and closer to the corner arrangement of certain earlier building types.
Whether they functioned as minarets in the later sense is genuinely uncertain. They may have been used for the call to prayer, may have served as markers of the building’s status, or may have had some other purpose entirely, and the sources describing them are later and use terminology that had shifted in the interval.
The wider point is about how architectural forms acquire their meanings. A tower attached to a mosque in the 670s existed before the idea of a minaret was settled, and reading it as a minaret projects a later definition onto an earlier experiment. The form and the function converged over a century or more, and the convergence is what created the type.
The methodological caution generalizes. When an element in an early building resembles a later standard feature, the resemblance may indicate an ancestor, a coincidence, or a different thing that later got the same name, and distinguishing these requires evidence about function rather than about appearance.
The Building in the Wider Islamic World
Placing this mosque against its contemporaries elsewhere shows what was ordinary about it and what was not.
The garrison town congregational mosque was a standard type, since the conquests produced several new settlements of the same kind across the region, each requiring the same central building for the same reasons. The mosques of those settlements followed similar trajectories: modest first structures, rapid enlargement as populations grew, repeated rebuilding, and in several cases eventual replacement or loss.
The comparison shows that this mosque’s history is typical rather than exceptional in its pattern and exceptional in its persistence. Other early garrison foundations lost their mosques entirely or saw them reduced as their settlements failed, whereas this one remained in a district that, however diminished, never emptied.
The great imperial mosques of the late seventh and early eighth centuries belong to a different category. Built by caliphs with vast resources as statements of the new order, in stone and mosaic and marble, they represent an architecture of assertion rather than of provision, and several survive in far better original condition precisely because they were built to last.
The distinction between a provision building and a statement building runs through the whole history of Islamic architecture and it explains a great deal about survival. A mosque built quickly to serve a growing congregation is rebuilt as the congregation grows; a mosque built slowly to make a point is preserved as a monument.
This mosque began firmly in the first category and drifted into the second over the centuries, as its practical function shrank and its symbolic status rose. The nineteenth century restoration is the clearest expression of that drift.
The Tulunid mosque, by contrast, began in the second category, which is a substantial part of the reason it survives as built.
The general observation for a reader of monuments is that the reason a building was put up is a good predictor of whether its fabric will still be there, and buildings raised to serve a need are systematically less likely to survive than buildings raised to make a claim.
Reading a Rebuilding
Each of the major campaigns tells you something beyond the fact of enlargement, and reading them individually is more informative than listing them.
The first enlargement of the 670s came about three decades after the founding, under a governor who also added towers at the corners. Three decades is roughly the interval in which a garrison of soldiers becomes a settled population with families, and the timing therefore records the transformation of a camp into a town. The towers are the more interesting element, since they represent an early experiment with a form that had no settled definition.
The rebuilding at the end of the seventh century is the most revealing, because it involved demolition rather than extension. A governor who tears down the mosque founded by the conqueror of the country and builds a bigger one is making a statement about resources and confidence, and the fact that this was acceptable tells you the original building was valued for its site rather than treated as a relic.
The early eighth century campaign introduced the concave prayer niche within a few years of that feature’s appearance in Arabia, which is evidence about how rapidly architectural innovations travelled through the caliphate. A provincial mosque adopting a new form almost immediately indicates a well connected network of patrons and builders.
The 820s expansion is the largest and it came under a governor of a period when Egypt’s administration was relatively strong. It doubled the building again and fixed the plan permanently, and the fact that no later ruler enlarged it further, despite several with far greater resources, indicates that the ninth century capacity was never subsequently exceeded by demand.
The medieval repairs after fire and earthquake are a different category, since they preserved rather than expanded, and their patrons were rulers whose capitals lay elsewhere. Repairing a mosque in a declining district is an act of piety and prestige rather than of provision.
The nineteenth century campaign closes the sequence and is the most thorough, replacing most of the fabric on the existing plan.
The general method here is worth extracting. A building’s construction history is a series of decisions, each made by someone with a reason, and asking what the decision cost, who paid, and what alternative was available turns a chronology into an argument. Enlargement means demand; demolition means confidence; repair without enlargement means prestige; comprehensive rebuilding means the fabric had failed.
What Survives from Each Period
Distinguishing the layers in the standing building is difficult and the honest position is that most of it cannot be dated confidently by eye, which is worth explaining rather than glossing.
The plan is the oldest securely datable element, since the enclosure’s dimensions and general arrangement descend from the ninth century campaign. A visitor walking the perimeter is tracing a ninth century decision.
The orientation is older still, descending from the founding, as the previous section on the direction of prayer set out.
The columns are older than the building in the sense that they were made in Roman and Byzantine workshops, and younger than the mosque in the sense that they were assembled into their present arrangement at some later point. A reused column tells you about the classical building it came from and about the moment of its reuse, and the second is usually much harder to determine than the first.
Individual elements of the medieval fabric survive in places, and inscriptions recording particular repairs are the most reliable guide to them, since a dated inscription fixes at least the element it is attached to.
The great bulk of what is visible is nineteenth century, including much of the walling, the roofing, the arcade construction and the finishes, and this is the single most important fact for a visitor to hold.
The difficulty of separating the layers arises because each restoration reused material from its predecessor, repaired rather than replaced where it could, and matched the existing forms. The result is not a stack of clearly bounded periods but a mixture in which a single arcade may combine elements from several centuries.
The consequence for interpretation is a caution. Statements about what a visitor can see of any particular early period should be treated sceptically unless supported by specific documentation, and the general answer to the question of what survives from the seventh century is nothing at all.
The Mosque and the City
The building’s fortunes tracked the fortunes of the settlement around it with unusual fidelity, and reading the two together turns a list of repairs into a history of a district.
The first two centuries were a period of growth for both. The settlement expanded from a garrison camp into Egypt’s largest city, its population multiplied, and the mosque was enlarged four times in response. Each expansion is a demographic measurement.
The ninth century marks the turn. The last enlargement established the footprint and no further expansion followed, which means the congregation stopped outgrowing the building. That coincides with the period in which new capital quarters were founded to the north, first the administrative annexe, then the Tulunid foundation described in the preceding article, each drawing government and its associated population away from the original settlement.
The tenth to twelfth centuries were a period of continued prosperity for the old settlement even as the political centre moved, since the article on the city’s founding sets out that it remained the commercial and residential heart of the region for two centuries after the newer capital was founded. The mosque remained a major institution through that period, with judges sitting and scholars teaching in it.
The twelfth century burning was the decisive blow to the district. From that point the old settlement declined as a residential area, its population fell, buildings were abandoned and the ground was gradually given over to other uses.
The mosque’s later history is that of a great building in a diminished district. Its congregation shrank, its maintenance became intermittent, and periods of neglect alternated with campaigns of repair undertaken by patrons who valued its standing rather than by a community that needed its capacity.
The nineteenth century restoration should be read in this light. A comprehensive rebuilding of a mosque in a peripheral quarter, undertaken when the building had deteriorated badly, is an act of heritage rather than of provision, and it reflects a period in which the building’s antiquity had become its principal claim on resources.
The general observation is that a monument’s repair history is a proxy for its surroundings’ economic history, since repairs require a local population willing and able to fund them or an external patron with a reason to intervene. Reading the sequence backwards recovers information about the district that other evidence may not supply.
Teaching and Scholarship
The mosque’s role as a centre of learning deserves fuller treatment, because for several centuries it was among the most important such centres in the Islamic world and because the institutional form it represents is unfamiliar.
Teaching in this period was not conducted in dedicated colleges, which developed later, but in mosques, and it was organized around individual scholars rather than around institutions. A recognized teacher sat in a particular place in the building, students gathered around him, and the circle was identified by his name and his location.
The association with a physical spot was strong enough that particular columns in a large mosque became known by the names of the scholars who taught at them, and such associations could persist across generations as a successor took over a predecessor’s place.
The subjects were principally the religious sciences: law, the transmitted traditions of the Prophet, Quranic interpretation, grammar and the auxiliary disciplines. Legal instruction dominated, since law was the practical discipline that produced judges and jurists.
The most celebrated figure associated with this mosque taught there in the early ninth century and is one of the founders of Islamic jurisprudence as a systematic discipline. His presence attracted students and gave the mosque a standing in legal scholarship that lasted well beyond his lifetime.
The relationship between teaching and justice within the building was close, since the judges who heard cases in one part of it were trained in the tradition taught in another, and the mosque was thus simultaneously a court, a law school and a place of worship.
The decline of this role followed the general pattern. As dedicated colleges developed from the eleventh century and as the district around the mosque lost population, teaching moved elsewhere, and the great mosque foundations of the newer capital took over the function.
The transferable point concerns how institutions live inside buildings. A mosque that served as court, school and assembly hall was not a multipurpose facility in the modern sense; it was the physical location of a society’s public life, and the differentiation of those functions into separate buildings is a later development that a reader should not project backwards.
Determining the Direction of Prayer
The orientation of the first mosque is a technical problem that repays attention, because solving it in 641 was genuinely difficult and because the solution adopted was then locked in permanently.
The requirement is to face a specific city in Arabia, and doing that from Egypt requires knowing where that city lies relative to where you are standing. In the seventh century that knowledge was approximate, held by practical travellers rather than by geographers with instruments, and the methods available were correspondingly rough.
Several methods were in use across the early Islamic world and they gave different answers. One was to face the direction from which pilgrims and caravans departed, which is a practical and locally meaningful method that can be substantially wrong. Another was to reproduce the orientation of the Prophet’s own mosque relative to the sacred building there. A third used astronomical observation, particularly the rising or setting points of certain stars, which is more accurate in principle and demanding in practice.
The result across the early mosques of the region is a striking variety of orientations, with buildings in the same city sometimes differing by many degrees, and the pattern of those differences is itself evidence about which method a particular community used.
For this mosque the orientation adopted at the founding was maintained through every subsequent rebuilding. A rebuilt mosque does not reconsider its direction of prayer, since the whole community prays along it and changing it would be a serious disruption, so the alignment of the enclosure preserves a judgment made by men standing in a newly captured country in the 640s.
That preservation makes the orientation one of the few things about the original building that genuinely survives. The stones are gone; the angle is not.
The wider methodological point is attractive. Orientation is a piece of physical evidence about a lost building that persists through complete material replacement, because it is a property of the site’s layout rather than of the fabric, and studying the orientations of early mosques across a region reconstructs something about the knowledge and methods of their builders that no text records.
Later refinement of geographical knowledge produced more accurate determinations, and a great many early mosques accordingly face in directions that later calculation would not have chosen. That mismatch is not an error to be corrected but a record of what was knowable when the building was laid out.
The Evidence Problem
Everything stated about the original building rests on written description rather than physical remains, and the character of that evidence needs to be understood before it is used.
Nothing of the first mosque survives. It was demolished, its materials were perishable, and the site has been continuously built over since. No excavation has recovered it and none is likely to, since the standing building occupies the ground.
The descriptions come from later writers, and the most detailed and most used is a fifteenth century topographical compilation on Egypt whose author drew on earlier works, some of them now lost. That author was writing eight centuries after the founding and describing a building that had vanished long before his own time.
How do we know what the early mosque looked like?
Entirely from written description, since nothing of the original survives and the site has been continuously occupied. The fullest account comes from a fifteenth century topographical compilation drawing on earlier and now lost sources, supplemented by a tenth century Egyptian chronicle. Both are late relative to the building, and their dimensions and details cannot be checked physically.
A tenth century Egyptian chronicle of the province’s governors and judges is closer in time and more restrained in character, and where it records a rebuilding or an enlargement under a named governor it provides the framework the later compilation elaborates.
The reliability of such material varies by type of statement.
