The correct height is medium, and medium here means a rearmost line around the edge of your own defensive third with the midfield block compressed to within roughly ten to twelve yards of it. What does not change is the job description, and the job description has four parts: the angle, the distance, the shoulder, and the timing of the retreat.
The angle
The first defender approaches on a curved path, never a straight one, and arrives with his body opened so that his hips point toward the touchline rather than square to the forward. Square hips are an invitation. A square defender can be attacked on either side, which means the forward has two options and the defender has to guess, and a guess against him is a loss. Opened hips reduce the forward’s options to one, which is the outside, and one option is a plan rather than a coin toss.
The curve matters because it kills the approach speed that makes defenders commit. A defender running a straight line at a ball carrier arrives with momentum he cannot cancel, and momentum is commitment by another name. A defender running a curve arrives already decelerating, already turned, and already able to move backward at speed.
The distance
Two yards, held while retreating. Closer than that and the forward’s first touch across the body has a defender’s planted foot to work against. Two yards is uncomfortably specific and deliberately so. A coach who tells a defender to “stay close but do not dive in” has said nothing. A coach who marks two yards on the training pitch with a pole, has the defender retreat along it against a carrier, and stops the drill the instant the gap opens to three or closes to one, has coached something. The shoulder
The first defender defends the outside shoulder, forcing the carry toward the touchline and away from the inside seam. This is the instruction that most reliably surprises coaches, because the conventional wisdom on defending a left-footed forward who cuts inside is to show him outside onto his weaker side, and the conventional wisdom is right in principle and incomplete in application.
Showing him outside is correct. Showing him outside by standing on his inside shoulder is not, because a defender positioned on the inside shoulder is positioned to be beaten on the inside, and the moment his first touch goes across the defender’s body the defender is already turning. The correct position is on the outside shoulder with the body angled so that the inside route is closed by the screening defender behind rather than by the first defender’s own body. The first defender does not close the inside pass. He closes the inside carry only insofar as his angle discourages it, and he trusts the screen for everything else.
That trust is the hardest sell in the whole plan. A defender who has been beaten inside once will start cheating inside, the outside route opens, and the moment the forward gets to the outside with a yard he crosses or cuts back into a box your block has now over-shifted away from. The instruction has to be repeated, and the screening defender has to be visible to the first defender, which is a communication requirement rather than a tactical one.
The timing of the retreat
The first defender retreats at the speed of the carry and never faster. Retreating faster than the carry produces exactly what the forward wants, which is a growing gap and a stationary target. Retreating slower produces contact, and contact produces either a foul in a dangerous area or a beaten defender.
The retreat ends at one of three points: the ball is passed sideways or backward, in which case the first defender’s job is over and the zone hands off to whoever owns the new zone; the screening defender signals he is set and the trigger for the second defender fires; or the carry reaches the edge of the penalty area, at which point the first defender stops retreating and holds, because retreating further means retreating into his own goalkeeper’s working space and giving up the shot.

The screening defender positions himself between the ball and the inside seam, roughly five to seven yards behind and slightly infield of the first defender, with his body angled so that his shoulders are perpendicular to the likely pass rather than square to the ball. His feet are set, not moving. His head is on a swivel between the ball and the runner behind him. He does not step toward the ball unless the trigger fires.
The reason the angle matters so much is that his job is to be a physical obstacle in a lane rather than a defender making an interception. An interception is a commitment. A screen is a fact. A screening defender standing correctly does not need to touch the ball to succeed; he needs the pass to not be available, which means the forward holds a fraction longer, which means the first defender’s delay accumulates, which means the rest of the block gets set. The screen has to account for a specific pattern, and this is where knowing the subject rather than the archetype matters. Defending it is a screening problem rather than a first-defender problem, because the first defender is by design not in a position to intercept anything.
The screening instruction against the wall pass is that the screen tracks the return lane, not the outgoing pass. When the ball leaves the forward’s foot toward a teammate, the amateur reaction is to follow the ball. The trained reaction is to take one step into the space the forward is about to run into, because the whole purpose of the combination is to relocate him. When does the second defender step?
Three rehearsed triggers, agreed before the match. A touch that takes the ball more than a stride from his foot while he faces the touchline. A reception with his back fully to goal and no teammate within fifteen yards. The carry crossing into the wide channel, where the touchline helps.
Nothing else fires the step. Not the crowd, not the score, not a coach’s instinct, not the sight of a teammate isolated. The value of a trigger list is that it removes judgment from a moment where judgment is unreliable, and the shortness of the list is a feature. A side that rehearses three triggers will execute them. The Plan Phase by Phase
A counter-plan that exists only as principles falls apart in the twenty minutes after kick off. What follows is the same scheme expressed as a sequence, from the opponent’s goal kick to the final action, with the decision each phase demands.
Phase one: their build-up, your rest position
The opponent has the ball in their own third. Your block is medium and compressed, your forwards are not chasing centre-backs, and your entire attention is on one question: where is he standing. Not where is the ball. Where is he standing.
This is the phase where most preparation is wasted, because coaches spend it designing a press. Pressing high against a side he plays for is a defensible choice only if you can press with genuine numbers and genuine coordination, and if you cannot, the high press becomes a gift, because it produces exactly the disorganized middle third he liked best. The default in this plan is not to press. The default is to set, to hold the zones, and to force the ball to travel through the pitch in front of you.
The one active instruction in phase one is that the ball-side pivot registers his position before the ball moves. If he has dropped deep to receive around halfway, the ball-side full-back holds and does not follow him up the pitch. If he is standing in the pocket, the ball-side pivot is already three yards closer to that pocket than his default. Registering costs nothing and buys the half-second that makes the next phase survivable.
Phase two: the entry pass
The ball is played into him, or into the zone he is about to enter. This is the phase the plan is designed around, and the sequence has to be automatic.
The owner of the zone becomes the first defender and arrives on the curve, opened hips, outside shoulder, two yards. The screening body sets in the inside lane, feet planted, shoulders angled. The far-side full-back tucks inside. The rearmost line holds its height rather than dropping, because dropping here is the reflex that gives him a free look. Nobody has committed. Nobody has tackled. From the stands it looks like nothing is happening, and that is the correct appearance.
The half-second decision inside phase two is whether the reception is back to goal or facing goal, because the two produce different first-defender behavior. He has turned or received facing, and he is carrying. The first defender retreats at the speed of the carry, holding two yards, staying on the outside shoulder. The screen holds. The block does not over-shift. The far full-back stays tucked.
The one thing that changes in this phase is that the rest of the defensive line begins a slow, deliberate compression toward the ball side, at roughly half the lateral rate of the ball’s travel, while the far centre-back holds the widest defensive position on the far side rather than sliding fully across. That asymmetry is deliberate. It leaves the far winger free, which the plan accepted at the outset, but it keeps a body in the corridor his reverse pass targets, and the reverse pass into that corridor is a far more dangerous action than a switch to a free winger who then has to beat a recovering full-back and cross.
Phase four: the release or the shot
He plays a pass or he shoots. Both are acceptable outcomes if the earlier phases held, and the plan should say so out loud in the meeting, because players who believe every touch he takes is a catastrophe will panic and commit.
If the pass goes into the screened lane and the screen was set, the pass is either intercepted or arrives slow, which converts a breaking attack into a static one. If the pass goes wide because the inside was screened, the wide receiver is being defended by a full-back with a tucked centre-back behind and a recovering winger, which is a duel your side should be prepared to accept a hundred times. If he shoots from the top of the box with a defender at two yards on his outside shoulder, the shooting angle has been narrowed toward the near side and the goalkeeper’s positioning instruction below applies.
The failure inside phase four is almost always the same one: a defender who has held discipline for three phases lunges at the shot. A blocked shot is worth having, but a lunge at the shot from two yards is the commitment the whole plan was built to avoid, and against a player who habitually shifted the ball one further touch before striking it, the lunge produces the beat and the free finish. The instruction is to close the shooting line by staying tall and narrow, not by reaching.
Phase five: the second ball and the reset
The action ends. A shot is saved, a cross is cleared, a pass is intercepted. The plan is not over, because his sides were structured to recycle immediately and attack the same zone again with the defensive block now disorganized.
The phase-five instruction is that the block resets to zones and not to men, and that the reset is announced by the deepest midfielder rather than by the goalkeeper, because the deepest midfielder can see the pocket and the goalkeeper cannot. The second most common goal conceded in this pattern comes from a defense that has cleared a cross, congratulated itself, and been caught with the pocket unoccupied when the ball is recycled within four seconds.
The other phase-five decision is whether to counter. This plan does not require you to counter, but a side that never counters gives the opponent a free high line and unlimited rest defense, and unlimited rest defense means his side can commit more bodies forward, which makes every phase above harder. Even a modest counter threat, one forward who stays high and two who join late, buys you a slightly deeper opponent and a slightly less crowded pocket. That is a real defensive gain purchased with attacking intent, and it is the part of the plan defensive coaches are most reluctant to fund.
The Transition Addendum
Transition is the phase where the whole scheme is most vulnerable, because the scheme is built on assigned zones and transition is by definition the moment before zones exist.
The pattern to prepare for is specific. When his side won the ball in the middle third, he did not typically sprint into a channel. He moved into the space vacated by the players who had just been attacking, received facing forward with the opposing block still turned around, and released a runner into a defense that had not reformed. That means the danger arrives not at high speed but at high clarity, and the defensive answer is not recovery running toward your own goal. It is central occupation.
The rule in transition is that the first two players to recover occupy the central corridor rather than picking up a man, and that the first defender to reach the ball delays without engaging while the corridor fills behind him. Recovering to a man in transition is how sides end up with four defenders marking four attackers in a line and no cover, which is precisely the geometry his through balls were designed to break.
There is a preventive element that belongs to your attacking organization rather than your defending. Rest defense, the shape your side holds while it has the ball, decides how many of these transitions you face. A side that attacks him with a two-plus-one rest defense, meaning two defenders and a screening midfielder held permanently behind the ball, will face perhaps half as many clean transitions as a side that commits everyone. That is a bigger defensive lever than anything in the block itself, and it is invisible on a defensive video review because it happens while you have the ball.
The second preventive element is where you lose possession. Turnovers in the central third, in front of your own midfield, are the ones that feed him. Turnovers on the touchline in the attacking half are almost harmless, because the ball has to travel a long way through pressure to reach the pocket. A side that consistently loses the ball wide and high will face a different match from a side that loses it centrally, and that is coachable through pass selection in the final third rather than through any defensive instruction.
The Set-Piece and Foul-Location Addendum
Two dead-ball topics have to be resolved before the match: where you are willing to foul, and how you defend the free kick when you inevitably do.
The foul-location calculation
Fouling has to be discussed honestly, because the popular version of this conversation is both dangerous and tactically wrong. The idea that the answer to a great creator is to kick him is not a plan, and this article does not present it as one. Reckless challenges injure players, they are outside the laws of the game, and any coach who instructs them has failed at his job in a way no tactical argument can rescue. That is the boundary and it is not negotiable.
Inside the laws, foul location is a legitimate coaching topic and it has a specific answer here. A professional foul that stops a breaking attack thirty-five yards from goal in a central position, against a left-footed dead-ball specialist, is a poor trade. It converts a low-percentage open-play situation into a high-percentage set-piece situation, and it puts a card into a defender who then has to execute the delay protocol for another hour with a card in his pocket. A defender executing the no-commitment rule while carrying a booking is a defender who will stand off at four yards, which returns the plan to its worst state.
The coaching instruction is therefore that the delay protocol is also a foul-avoidance protocol, and that the acceptable places to stop an attack cynically are wide and deep, not central and near the box. If the choice is a foul on the touchline forty yards out or a free carry into the pocket, take the foul. If the choice is a foul in the central zone at the top of the arc or a shot from the same place, take the shot every time.
Defending the free kick itself
The mechanics of defending a left-footed specialist from the right-central area of the arc come down to wall construction and goalkeeper positioning, and the two have to be decided together.
The wall against a left-footed striker of the ball taking a direct free kick from the right-central zone is set to cover the goalkeeper’s near side, with an extra body at the end of the wall on the side the ball will curl toward. The chronic error is building the wall to cover the side the taker is standing on rather than the side the ball will finish on. A left-footed taker from that zone is threatening the far corner with curl and the near corner with a driven ball over or around the near end of the wall, and the wall’s job is to remove one of those two so the goalkeeper only has to defend one.
The specific detail worth rehearsing is the over-the-wall finish. A player who consistently lifted the ball over a wall and dropped it under the bar is defended by wall height rather than wall width, which means the wall jumps together on a called cue and, more importantly, that at least one player at the end of the wall does not jump, because the ball that goes under a jumping wall is the easier goal and the harder one to explain afterward.
There is a second dead-ball dimension that is easier to defend and more often neglected, which is the short corner and the deep set-piece delivery into the box from a wide free kick. A side that has spent all week on the direct free kick and none on the delivery will concede from the delivery. The rehearsal split should be roughly even.
The corner and the second phase
His sides’ corners were frequently short or worked rather than swung, and the defensive answer is a designated pair on the short option who do not retreat into the box when the corner is taken short. Sides that leave one defender on the short corner are inviting a two-against-one on the touchline followed by a cutback into a box that is now defended by static markers facing the wrong way.
The second-phase rule around the box is the same rule that governs the whole plan: nobody commits to the clearing header until the screening body has reset in front of the box. The rebound from a set piece falling to a specialist finisher twenty yards out with the defense turned toward its own goal is one of the cheapest goals in football and one of the most preventable.
The Goalkeeper’s Job
The goalkeeper’s assignment against a placement finisher is different from his assignment against a power finisher, and the difference is worth an explicit conversation in the week.
The core adjustment is starting position. Against a forward whose finishing pattern is heavily weighted toward placement into the corners with the inside of the left foot from the right-central area, the goalkeeper’s default position is a half-step further toward his near post than the geometric bisector would suggest, because the far-post placement is a longer flight and the near-post placement is the one that arrives before he can move. That is a preference rather than a rule, and it is worth checking against your own analysis before adopting it.
The second adjustment is patience, which is the goalkeeping version of the no-commitment rule. A goalkeeper who sets early and stays set is far better placed against a finisher who reads goalkeeper movement than a goalkeeper who tries to narrow the angle by advancing. Advancing works against a striker who shoots hard and early. It fails against a forward who waits for the goalkeeper’s weight to shift and rolls the ball past the planted foot, and it fails badly, because the goalkeeper is then out of his goal with the ball behind him.
The third adjustment concerns the one-on-one, which arrives from a through ball or a beaten defender. The instruction is to stay big, delay, and force the finish rather than diving at the ball, which is again the same principle. A goalkeeper who spreads late and stays on his feet until the forward’s striking foot is committed will save more of these than one who slides early, and sliding early against this finisher was reliably punished with a lifted or rolled finish into the vacated half of the goal.
The fourth is cross management around him. He was not an aerial threat in the box, which frees the goalkeeper to attack crosses more aggressively than he might against a tall centre-forward, and that aggression has real value because it reduces the second-phase chaos his side thrived on. This is one of the few places in the plan where commitment is correct, and the reason is that the specific weakness that permits it is genuine rather than assumed. What the Plan Concedes Deliberately
A counter-plan that has not named its concessions is a wish. This one has two, and both should be stated to the players in the meeting rather than discovered by them at nought-nil down.
Concession one: the ball
You are not going to have much of it, and chasing it will make everything above impossible. The block sits, the forwards do not press the centre-backs, and the opponent is permitted to circulate in front of you for long periods. Players find this psychologically hard, coaches find it hard to sell, and supporters find it intolerable. It is nonetheless the price of a compressed medium block, because the block cannot be compressed and aggressive at the same time with the same eleven players.
The way to make this concession survivable is to give the possession back on your terms. A side that concedes possession and also concedes territory will be pinned, and a pinned side eventually cracks. A side that concedes possession but wins territory back through long, well-directed clearances into a channel, through set-piece territory, and through a genuine counter threat, will spend meaningful periods of the match with the ball in the opposition half without ever having controlled it. That is the difference between a defensive plan and a siege.
There is a second, subtler element. Conceding the ball is only tolerable if your side is comfortable with the ball when it does arrive. A team that panics on its first touch will return possession within four seconds every time, and returning it that fast in your own third is how you convert a controlled block into a permanent one. Ten seconds of competent retention after each recovery is worth more to this plan than any additional defensive instruction, because it resets the block, moves the pitch, and gives eleven players a breath.
Concession two: the far flank
The far-side winger is going to be free. The far full-back is tucking inside, the block is shifting only half the ball’s travel, and the switch is available for most of the match. This is not an oversight, and the coach has to defend it explicitly, because the switch is the most visible thing on the pitch and the first thing a critical observer will point at.
The argument for the concession is arithmetical. A switch to a free winger costs the opponent roughly two to three seconds of ball travel, requires the winger to control and face up, and then produces a one-against-one against a recovering full-back with a tucked centre-back behind. That is a sequence with a modest expected value. The alternative, sliding the block fully across, produces an unoccupied inside corridor for a passer who was among the best in the sport’s history at finding exactly that corridor with a first-time reverse pass. That is a sequence with a high expected value. Conceding the first to deny the second is a straightforward trade, and it is the trade that separates sides who defended this problem well from sides who defended it earnestly.
The concession is not unconditional. Two adjustments make it cheaper. The first is that the far-side winger of your own team recovers to a position goal-side of the ball on his flank rather than staying high, which turns the one-against-one into a two-against-one in your favor at the cost of your counter-attacking outlet. The second is that the far-side centre-back holds the widest position on the far side rather than sliding fully across, which shortens the distance the recovering full-back has to defend alone. Both cost something. Both are worth having if the opponent’s far winger is genuinely dangerous in isolation.
The Fallbacks When the First Plan Fails
Plans fail. The measure of a coach is whether the second version exists before it is needed, and there are three fallbacks worth preparing, in escalating order of cost.
Fallback one: add the third body to the inside seam
The first response to a plan that is leaking is not a formation change. It is a personnel adjustment inside the same structure: the ball-side wide midfielder or winger drops permanently into the inside seam alongside the screening pivot, converting the corridor from two bodies to three.
This is cheap because it changes nothing about the assignments and everything about the density of the zone. Its cost is attacking, not defensive: you have converted a counter-attacking outlet into a defensive body, and your ability to relieve pressure drops immediately. That means the concession-one problem gets worse, so this fallback has a time limit. Twenty minutes of it is a tactical adjustment. Sixty minutes of it is a siege you will eventually lose.
Fallback two: switch to a back five
If the first defender is being beaten repeatedly in the half-space and the back line keeps shortening to cover, the structural answer is to change the structure so that stepping no longer costs you a defender. Moving to a back five with wing-backs achieves that in one substitution and one instruction.
The gain is that the wide centre-back can step into the half-space as the first defender with a spare defender permanently behind him, which removes the failure mechanism entirely. The cost is that you have committed five defenders and two screening midfielders to defending, which leaves three attacking players and almost no ability to build. Sides that make this change while level often end up losing anyway, because they cannot get out, and the change should therefore be paired with a clear plan for what your three attackers actually do with the ball rather than a hope that they will manage.
Fallback three: change the problem instead of the answer
The third fallback is the one most coaches never consider and the one that historically produced some of the best results against sides he played for. Instead of improving your defense against him, reduce the number of times the sequence happens by keeping the ball away from his team entirely.
This is a real and underrated approach. A side that controls possession, plays with patience, builds slowly, keeps a heavy rest defense, and turns the match into a low-event contest will face fewer of the phases above than a side that defends brilliantly for ninety minutes. Every minute your team spends in comfortable possession in the opposition half is a minute the pocket is empty. The historical record includes more than one plan built primarily on possession and tempo control rather than on defensive organization, and dismissing those as merely defensive misses what they actually did.
The prerequisite is that your side can genuinely hold the ball against a high-quality press, and most cannot. Where the personnel supports it, though, this is often the highest-value adjustment available, and it should be considered at the planning stage rather than kept as an emergency measure.
The Weaker-Squad and Amateur Version
Everything above assumes trained defenders who can execute zonal hand-offs and hold a shifting compressed block. Most sides cannot. A youth team, an amateur side training once a week, a school team, or a lower-league squad with limited preparation time will not install the eight-row assignment table, and pretending otherwise produces a worse outcome than a simpler plan executed properly.
The reduced version is two rules, and two is the correct number because a side that cannot rehearse cannot remember more.
The first rule is that nobody tackles the best player until a teammate is standing behind them. That is the no-commitment rule in language a fifteen-year-old will retain, and it survives contact with the chaos of an amateur match in a way that a zone map does not. It can be coached in a single session, it can be shouted from the touchline in four words, and it addresses the failure mode that accounts for most of the damage.
The second rule is that the two central midfielders never both go to the ball. One goes, one stays, and the one who stays stands in the middle of the pitch between the ball and the goal. This is the screen, stripped of angle and geometry and reduced to occupancy. It will not be executed as precisely as the professional version, but a body standing in the inside corridor is worth most of the value even when the body is standing there imperfectly.
Everything else, the shoulder angles, the two-yard distances, the trigger list, is a refinement to be added when the two rules are automatic and not before. A coach who tries to install refinement before foundation will get a side that thinks about angles while a striker runs past them.
There is a third piece of advice for the amateur coach that is not a rule but a framing. At youth and amateur level the best player on the opposing side is usually beating you with a physical quality rather than a technical one, which means the delay protocol is even more effective than it is at elite level, because delay neutralizes acceleration far better than it neutralizes decision-making. Standing off a quick fifteen-year-old is deeply counterintuitive and remarkably effective, and the coach’s job is to hold the line on it when the touchline disagrees.
The Analyst’s Version: What to Clip
An analyst preparing this plan for a coaching meeting is producing three clip sets and nothing else, because a meeting with thirty clips changes no behavior and a meeting with three clip sets changes some.
The first set is receptions by zone. Ten to fifteen clips, each starting two seconds before the ball reaches him, cut so that the coach and the players can see where he was standing before the pass rather than what he did after it. The purpose of this set is to establish the zone map for this specific opponent in this specific phase of his career, which is a different map from the one in his reputation.
The second set is the commitment moment. Six to eight clips in which a defender commits and is removed, cut to freeze at the instant of the plant rather than at the beat. The purpose is emotional as much as analytical: players who have watched six defenders removed in the same way will accept the no-commitment rule in a way that no verbal instruction achieves.
The third set is the wall pass and the reverse pass, four to six clips, cut to show the screening defender’s position at the moment the outgoing pass leaves rather than the moment the return arrives. This is the set that teaches the screen its job, and it is the set most analysts skip because it looks like nothing is happening in it.
The method of building those sets, the number of matches to watch, the order of observation, and how the dossier becomes a meeting are the property of the scouting and analysis articles in this series rather than of a counter-plan, and the counter-plan links to them rather than teaching the method again. What belongs here is the output: three sets, a zone map, an assignment sheet, and a two-rule summary a player can carry onto the pitch.
The Debates Worth Settling
Six positions come up every time this problem is discussed, and a coach who cannot answer them will be argued out of the plan by his own dressing room.
He could not be stopped at all
The strongest version of this claim is not silly. Across a long career he produced dangerous actions against every kind of defense, in every league he played in, against every quality of opponent. What the claim gets wrong is the standard it applies. Nobody stopped him in the sense of removing him from matches, and no plan in this article claims to. Plans reduced his volume and quality of chances, and sides that executed them won matches they would otherwise have lost. That is what defensive planning does against any elite attacker. Judging a plan by whether it achieved perfection is a way of refusing to plan at all.
The only method was fouling
This is both wrong and, in its usual form, indefensible. It is wrong because the record of persistent fouling in his zones is poor: it produced free kicks in the exact area a left-footed dead-ball specialist wanted them, it accumulated cards that degraded the defenders who most needed to execute a discipline-heavy protocol, and it did not prevent the receptions it was aimed at. It is indefensible because reckless challenges endanger players, and no tactical argument makes that acceptable. Fouling is a resource with a location and a cost, addressed above, not a strategy.
A more physical league would have handled him
The physical-league argument fails for the same reason the destroyer argument fails. Physicality expresses itself through commitment, and commitment was the failure condition. A league full of aggressive, front-footed defenders offers more early commitments per match, not fewer, which is a worse environment for the defense rather than a better one. Physical defending has real value against forwards whose threat is running in behind, holding the ball up, or attacking crosses. It has much less value against a forward whose threat lives in a five-yard box of grass and is triggered by a defender’s weight transfer.
A destroyer man-marking him was the answer
Addressed in full above, and the short version is that this combines the two worst available choices. The destroyer profile is optimized for committing, man-marking hands him control of your shape, and putting both together produces a defender being walked around the pitch while committing repeatedly. The historical attempts at this method are the least successful category of plan against him.
Sitting deep always worked
Sitting deep sometimes coincided with good results and rarely caused them. A deep block gives him unlimited time in the reception zone he preferred, packs bodies into the area his passing was built to dissect, and removes any counter threat, which lets his side commit more players forward and increases the number of phases you have to survive. Where deep blocks worked, they usually worked because they were paired with a real counter-attacking outlet or with a possession plan that kept the ball away, not because depth alone was the mechanism.
The plans that worked were luck
Some were. A goalkeeping performance, a post, a marginal offside, and a match that could have gone differently is a real thing and pretending otherwise is dishonest. But the plans that worked repeatedly, against him in different systems and different phases of his career, share observable structural features: zonal ownership rather than man-marking, delay rather than tackling, a screened inside seam, a tucked far side, a preserved counter threat, and a deliberate accounting of what was being surrendered. Features that recur across many successful attempts and are absent from unsuccessful ones are method, not luck.
The Common Execution Errors
Five errors account for most of the goals conceded by sides that had the right plan, and they are worth reading to a squad the day before the match.
The first is diving in, which has been covered exhaustively and will still happen, usually at around seventy minutes when a defender’s discipline is tired. The countermeasure is a substitution rather than an instruction. A fresh defender executing a patience protocol is worth more than a better but exhausted one.
The second is following him out of the line. A centre-back who tracks him into midfield has broken the line and given a runner the space behind, and the trigger for this error is almost always a moment where he received unmarked and somebody felt responsible. The countermeasure is a clear verbal hand-off, called by the screening midfielder, that tells the defender to stay.
The third is doubling without a screen, which converts the double-team into a hole. The countermeasure is the trigger list, and the discipline to keep the list at three.
The fourth is over-shifting the whole block toward him. This is the quietest error and it produces the most goals of the five, because the reverse pass into the vacated corridor is almost never blamed on the shift that caused it. The countermeasure is a rehearsed half-shift and a far-side centre-back who is explicitly told to hold his position.
The fifth is the goalkeeper advancing on the one-on-one. The countermeasure is a week of specific work with the goalkeeping coach on delayed spreading, which is a technique rather than a decision and improves quickly with practice.
The Match-Week Sequence
The plan is installed in a week, not a session, and the ordering matters because the behaviors depend on each other.
Early in the week the work is principle without opposition: the retreat at two yards, the curve of the approach, the opened hips, the screening angle, all rehearsed at low intensity with a passive carrier. This is boring work and it is where the technique is actually built.
Midweek the work is the pair. First defender and screening midfielder together, against two attackers, in a channel the width of the half-space, with the constraint that the defending pair cannot win the ball by tackling and score their success in seconds survived. That constraint is the whole session and it converts the no-commitment rule from an idea into a habit.
Late in the week the work is the unit, in a full-pitch phase with the trigger list live and a coach stopping play at every commitment rather than at every goal. Stopping at commitments rather than at goals is the single most important coaching decision in the week, because it tells players what is actually being measured.
The day before, the work is the two-rule summary and the clip sets, kept short. A squad that walks out with an eight-row table in their heads will execute none of it. A squad that walks out with two rules and a picture of six defenders being removed will execute most of it. The Supporting Cast Problem
Every counter-plan against a great creator has a second half that gets skipped, and skipping it is why plans that look sound on a whiteboard concede three goals. A creator does not score most of the goals he causes. He causes them, which means the plan is only finished when you have decided what happens to the players his threat creates space for.
The mechanism is simple to state and hard to defend. The moment your first defender steps and your screen sets, three of your players have committed their attention to one corridor. Everything the opposition does next is designed to use the attention those three players are no longer paying elsewhere. A side built around this kind of forward will have a runner attacking the space behind the stepping defender, a second forward occupying the far centre-back so he cannot cover, and a late-arriving midfielder aiming for the edge of the box where a cutback lands. Those three movements are the actual scoring mechanism. He is the trigger.
The first structural answer is that the runner behind the stepping defender is the far pivot’s responsibility and nobody else’s. This has to be assigned by name, because the runner is the single most common source of goals in this pattern and the responsibility is genuinely ambiguous unless somebody has claimed it. The far pivot does not screen, does not shift toward the ball, and does not react to the carry. He tracks the run behind the stepping defender and hands off only when the run leaves the corridor.
The second answer concerns the far centre-back, and it repeats the instruction given earlier because it is the instruction most likely to be quietly abandoned. He holds the widest defensive position on the far side and does not slide fully across. A second forward standing on his shoulder is trying to drag him infield, and if he goes, the cutback zone and the far post empty simultaneously. Holding a wide position while the ball is on the other side of the pitch feels wrong to every centre-back ever coached, and it has to be reinforced verbally during the match by the goalkeeper, who is the only player with the angle to see it.
The third answer concerns the edge of the box, which is the least defended patch of grass in most organized blocks and the one a late-arriving midfielder attacks. The rule is that the ball-side pivot, once his screening job is complete because the ball has gone wide, recovers to the top of the box rather than into it. Recovering into the box is the reflex, it adds a body where there are already bodies, and it leaves the rebound and cutback zone unoccupied. This single habit is worth more than most defensive substitutions.
There is a related point about the wide players in his side that is frequently mishandled. Because the plan tucks the far full-back and shifts only half the ball’s travel, the opposition’s wide players will receive in space repeatedly. A defense that panics about this will start sliding fully across, which reopens the corridor and undoes the plan. The correct posture toward the free wide player is patient: let him receive, delay the cross with a recovering winger and a full-back who does not dive in, and defend the box with the numbers the shape preserved. Crosses into a compact, correctly positioned box are among the least efficient attacking actions in football. Reverse passes into an unoccupied central corridor are among the most efficient. Keeping those two facts in the right order under pressure is most of the discipline this plan asks for.
The last element of the supporting-cast problem is the one that decides matches and is hardest to coach: the second-phase reset. His sides recycled quickly and attacked the same corridor again within a few seconds, against a block that had just spent its concentration. The instruction is that the reset is announced by the deepest midfielder, that the reset is to zones and not to men, and that the ball-side pivot’s first movement after any clearance is back toward the pocket rather than toward the ball. A defense that resets in three seconds will face the second wave organized. A defense that resets in six will not, and six is the default for a tired side that has just cleared a cross and believes the danger has passed.
