Framing it as a design question does three things that the ranking frame cannot. It removes the need to declare a winner, which is the part of the rivalry argument that generates heat and produces no information. The first thing to change is not speed. It is the capacity to repeat high-intensity efforts and to recover between them. A player can still hit close to his old top speed once. What he cannot do as reliably is hit it, jog back, hit it again forty seconds later, and then still be capable of the same action in the final quarter of the match. The football consequence is enormous and it is almost invisible on a highlight reel, because a highlight reel is a collection of single efforts. The player who can no longer repeat is still capable of every single action you will ever see clipped.
The second thing to change is maximal speed and explosive output itself, and it changes more slowly. Short-burst acceleration over the first few strides is more durable than sustained top-end running, which is one of the most important facts in this entire article, because it explains why concentrating a career into the penalty area is a rational adaptation rather than a surrender. The penalty area is a place where you almost never need to run thirty metres. You need to move two metres before the defender does.
The third thing to change, and it changes last and least, is technique and decision-making. Any successful adaptation must therefore reduce the number of high-intensity actions the role demands while increasing the value extracted from each one. That is not a metaphor. It is an arithmetic constraint, and once you see it as arithmetic, both careers stop looking like two different stories and start looking like two solutions to one equation.
The Effort-Budget Model
Here is the framework this article advances, and the name it should be cited under. The effort-budget model treats an aging forward as a shrinking budget of high-intensity efforts, and treats every successful late career as a decision about where that budget gets spent.
The model has four parts. The budget itself is the number of maximal or near-maximal actions the player can produce in a match without the quality of the later ones collapsing, plus the weekly ceiling on how often that match budget can be spent across a congested schedule. The spending zones are the areas of the pitch and the phases of play where those actions get used: pressing, recovery running, stretching runs in behind, ball-carrying, penalty-area movement, aerial contests, and duels. The exchange rate is how much football value each zone returns per unit of effort spent, which varies enormously and is the whole reason adaptation is possible. And the accommodation is what the team must change so that the player’s spending is protected, because a budget spent on actions the team’s structure forces on him is a budget not available for the actions that produce goals.
The exchange rate is where the model earns its keep. A high-intensity effort spent on a pressing trigger that the team is not set up to convert returns close to nothing. A high-intensity effort spent recovering forty metres to a position a covering midfielder could have occupied returns close to nothing. A high-intensity effort spent on a two-metre movement across a centre-back’s blind side inside the six-yard box, in the moment a cutback is about to arrive, returns more football value than any other action available on a pitch. These are not equal expenditures and no one should treat them as equal.
Once you accept that, the strategic logic of both routes becomes obvious and, in an odd way, identical. Both routes are attempts to move a shrinking budget out of low-return zones and into high-return zones. They differ only in which high-return zone they choose, and that choice is dictated by which of the player’s durable technical qualities is strongest.
The model also explains something the pundit version of this discussion consistently gets wrong. Fewer sprints does not mean less contribution. It can mean exactly the opposite: a player whose sprint count falls while his involvement in goal-producing sequences rises has not declined, he has reallocated. That combination is unusually demanding on exactly the quality that declines first. Carrying at a defender is a sequence of accelerations and decelerations, not one sprint, and doing it repeatedly across a match, with the ball, against players who are permitted to make contact, is close to the most expensive way a footballer can spend effort. The second original game was built on width, on running the length of the pitch to attack a cross, on repeated stretching runs that pushed a defensive line back, and on arriving in the penalty area from distance at speed. The mechanism has four component parts, and it is worth taking each one at the level of body shape and timing rather than at the level of description.
The first component is the starting position, and it is doing more work than any other element. A player who starts thirty metres from goal in a central area receives the ball with the entire opposition shape in front of him and visible. A player who starts on the shoulder of the last defender receives with everything behind him and nothing visible. The deeper start converts a physical problem into an information advantage: he no longer has to beat a defender to see the picture, because the picture is already in front of him. That single change eliminates a large category of expensive actions, since the most costly thing the original game asked of him was creating separation with the ball in a crowded area near the touchline.
The second component is the reception itself. Receiving deep is only safe if the first touch takes the ball out of the pressing player’s reach and into a forward-facing position in one movement, which is a technical quality rather than an athletic one, and which is therefore still fully available. The body shape is open before the ball arrives, the back foot receives, and the touch travels diagonally forward rather than square. Done properly this buys the half-second that used to be bought with acceleration, and it costs almost nothing from the budget.
The third component is the scan, and it is the least visible and most important. A deep creator’s value is proportional to how much of the picture he has already processed before the ball reaches him. Scanning frequency is a habit, not an athletic capacity, and habitual scanners tend to scan more as they get older rather than less. The fourth component is the release, and specifically the release that removes steps from a possession. A pass that skips a phase, that arrives on the runner’s outside foot in stride, or that arrives a beat before the defensive line has set, does the work that used to be done by carrying the ball past two players. What does a deeper starting position actually save a forward?
A deeper start removes repeated ball-carrying, the most expensive action available to a forward, and replaces it with reception, scanning, and final passing, which are technical qualities that decline far more slowly. There is a further layer that is often missed. The deep role does not only reduce the number of efforts, it changes their character. A ball-carrying forward’s efforts are contested, meaning they happen with a defender attached, which raises both the metabolic cost and the injury exposure. A deep creator’s efforts are largely uncontested, because the value is produced before the opponent arrives. Two players producing the same number of high-intensity actions per match are not under the same load if one set is contested and the other is not, which is a general coaching point worth carrying into any squad, and one of the reasons the deep route tends to extend availability rather than merely preserve output.
The route also has a specific relationship with pressing that has to be stated honestly rather than glossed. A deep creator who does not press is a structural hole, and the team either accepts the hole and compensates behind it or the route fails. There is no version of this adaptation where the player presses like a young forward and orchestrates like a veteran one. The budget does not stretch that far, and asking it to is the single most common way coaches ruin the adaptation they are trying to make.
Finally, the deep route has a ceiling condition that determines whether it is available at all. It requires the team to be able to get the ball to him under control, repeatedly, against pressure. A side that cannot build from the back cannot feed a deep creator, and the player ends up dropping into areas where the ball never arrives, which spends the budget on positioning for nothing. Route Two: The Penalty Area Solution
The second adaptation route moves the player toward goal and compresses his game into the smallest high-value area on the pitch. In its mature form the player operates almost exclusively between the width of the six-yard box extended and the penalty spot, rarely appears in build-up, and produces his value in actions that last under two seconds.
The mechanism again breaks into components, and again the components are about geometry and timing rather than about effort.
The first component is the reduction of the covered pitch. A wide forward who starts on the touchline and finishes in the penalty area covers a large distance on every attack, and covers it again in reverse when possession turns over. A forward who starts in the penalty area covers almost none of it. This is the largest single saving available anywhere in football, and it is why the route is so effective for players whose remaining strength is finishing rather than passing.
The second component is the blind-side movement, which is the actual skill of penalty-area occupation and which is badly underrated by people who describe this route as simply standing in the box. The forward positions himself in the centre-back’s peripheral vision, at the moment the centre-back’s head turns toward the ball, and then moves two or three metres across the defender’s body as the delivery leaves the crosser’s foot. The route has an important secondary benefit that rarely gets stated. Set pieces become a much larger share of the player’s output, and set pieces are the phase of football with the lowest athletic cost relative to goal value. A forward who is a genuine aerial threat from corners and free kicks generates chances in a phase where the effort expenditure is a single jump from a standing start. Any coach designing a late-career role should be treating the set-piece contribution as a deliberate part of the budget allocation rather than as a bonus.
There is also a defensive-structure consequence to be honest about. A forward who has compressed into the box is not pressing the opposition centre-backs and is not tracking a full-back. The team inherits the same structural hole that the deep route creates, in a different place, and must solve it the same way, by covering the space behind rather than by asking the forward to fill it. The ceiling condition for this route is service. A penalty-area specialist without wide creators is a spectator, and the adaptation collapses. The table repays a second reading in one particular direction. Read down the accommodation column rather than across the rows, and it becomes clear that every route imposes a cost on somebody else. This is the honest part of the aging discussion that admiration pieces skip. There is no adaptation that keeps a great player effective for free. The team pays, and the coach’s actual decision is not whether the player can still contribute but whether the contribution is worth what the rest of the side gives up to enable it. What Each Route Costs the Team
Take the deep creator first. The largest cost is to the pressing structure, and it is not a small one. A modern high press depends on the forward line setting the trap, and a side whose most influential player does not participate in that phase has to choose between pressing with a numerical shortage, which invites a clean escape into the space he vacated, or dropping into a mid-block and conceding the first phase entirely. Both are legitimate choices, and both are choices, meaning they must be made consciously rather than discovered on a Saturday.
The second cost is transition defending. A player who has just released a pass from a deep central position is well placed to counter-press, which is one of the underrated advantages of the deep route, but a player who has drifted into a deep position and then advanced with the attack is the worst-placed player on the pitch when the ball turns over. The route works when the deep position is the resting position; it fails when the deep position is a stopping point on the way forward.
The third cost is a concentration risk. When a team’s creation runs through one player who receives in a specific zone, the plan against that team simplifies. The penalty-area route has a different cost profile. Its largest cost is possession stability in the final third. A forward who occupies the box does not come short, does not hold the ball with his back to goal in the way a link forward does, and does not give a pressed team an out-ball. The side loses the ability to relieve pressure by playing forward, which pushes the relief responsibility onto the wide players and the midfield, and which shows up most painfully in the last twenty minutes of a match a team is trying to protect.
The second cost is predictability. A team whose most dangerous player must receive inside the penalty area is a team whose attacks must end in the penalty area, which narrows the range of finishing patterns and lets an organized defence pre-load its structure. There is a reason so many sides built around a box occupier become excellent at crossing and cutbacks and mediocre at everything else: the accommodation swallows the tactical variety.
The third cost is the defensive shape in the pressing phase, which is the same hole as the deep route but positioned differently. A box occupier does not set the press from the front, so the first line of defence is effectively a single player or a shifted midfielder, and the opposition centre-backs get time to pick a pass. Some sides solve this by pressing with a midfielder stepping up and covering behind him with a back three. Others accept it and defend deeper. Nobody solves it by asking the forward to do it.
Weighing the two honestly, the deep route costs a team more in the defensive phase and returns more in build-up quality and control, while the penalty-area route costs a team more in build-up and returns more in direct goal threat and set-piece output. The Defensive Consequence: How to Plan Against an Aging Elite Forward
This is the section that justifies the article, because it is the part almost nobody writes. Aging is discussed endlessly as a story about the player. It is also, and more usefully for a coach, a story about the opponent, because the plan you build against a great forward has to be torn up and rebuilt when he changes route. The version of a plan that worked against the original game is often close to the worst available plan against the adapted one.
The general principle first. Against a forward at his athletic peak, the defensive plan is usually about denial of space and time in a specific zone, backed by the acceptance that you will lose some duels and must therefore have cover. Against an adapted forward, the plan shifts toward denial of the specific action his route depends on, because the adapted player has fewer ways to hurt you and each one is more predictable in location. That sounds like it should make the job easier, and in one sense it does. It also concentrates his threat into a phase where he is more expert than he has ever been, which is why the job frequently gets harder rather than easier.
What changes first in a defensive plan against an adapted forward?
Plan against the specific remaining action rather than against the player. For a deep creator, deny the entry pass and defend the runners he releases. For a box occupier, deny the delivery rather than marking the finisher. In both cases the line height can be higher, because neither version threatens repeated runs in behind.
Against the deep creator, the plan has five components and they must be run together, because any one of them in isolation fails.
The first is ownership with a hand-off. Someone must be responsible for him at all times, and because he moves through zones rather than staying in one, the responsibility has to pass between players cleanly. The usual arrangement is that the nearest midfielder owns him when he is between the lines, the deepest midfielder owns him when he drops beside the pivot, and the hand-off happens on a spoken trigger rather than on a guess. This is a rehearsal problem before it is a tactical problem, and the session design for it belongs to training a side to contain a superstar, which this series treats as the canonical owner of every containment session question.
The second is the cover shadow on the entry pass rather than the press on the man. Pressing a deep creator who is facing forward with the ball is close to pointless, because his release is faster than your arrival. The productive action happens a pass earlier: the pressing forward or midfielder positions his body so that the passing lane into the deep creator is closed, forcing the ball wide or backward. Denial of reception is worth more than any amount of pressure after reception.
The third is forcing the reception facing his own goal on the occasions the ball does reach him. That means arriving from an angle rather than square, so that his open body shape is the wrong way, and it means the covering player behind him sitting tight enough that turning is genuinely uncomfortable. An orchestrator who has to play backward has been neutralized for that possession without a tackle being made.
The fourth is defending the runners rather than the passer, which sounds obvious and is routinely ignored. A deep creator produces value only if somebody attacks the space his pass is aimed at. Tracking those runs, and specifically holding the defensive line’s depth so the pass has nothing to arrive into, defeats the mechanism at its output rather than at its source. Sides that obsess over the passer and leave the runs untracked lose to the exact pass they spent the week worrying about.
The fifth is line height, and this is the counterintuitive one. Against the adapted deep version, the line can and should sit higher than it would have against the original game, because the player is no longer making repeated runs behind it. A higher line compresses the space between the lines, which is the space his passes are aimed into, and the risk that would normally justify dropping deeper has been removed by his own adaptation. Against the penalty-area specialist, the plan has a different five.
The first is defending the delivery. The single most effective action against a box occupier happens forty metres away from him, at the moment the wide player prepares to cross. Pressure on the crosser that forces the ball to be delivered from a deeper position, or with the weaker foot, or a half-second later than the run was timed for, removes more danger than any marking scheme inside the area. The near-side full-back and the nearest midfielder own this, and it is the first instruction on the board.
The second is denying the cutback zone. The space at the top of the six-yard box and the corridor between the penalty spot and the near post are where a compressed forward produces most of his output, and both can be occupied structurally rather than defended reactively. A holding midfielder whose job is simply to stand in the cutback lane when the ball goes wide is doing more work than a centre-back wrestling with the forward.
The third is the marking decision, and it is genuinely a decision rather than a default. Man-marking a box occupier gives him a body to move against, which is what his blind-side movement is designed to exploit, and gives the defender a reference that stops him watching the ball. The second mistake is asking for both. A forward who is told to drop deep and orchestrate, and also to press the centre-backs, and also to get into the box for crosses, has been given the original budget demand with a new job added to it. When to Start the Transition: Reading the Signals Early

The earliest signal is the recovery pattern between efforts rather than the efforts themselves. Watch a forward across three or four consecutive attacking sequences. At his peak, the second and third efforts look like the first. The first thing to change is that the second effort is a little later than the run demanded, or the third is made at ninety per cent, or the recovery jog back is a walk. The individual actions still look normal, which is exactly why this is missed, and it is the first appearance of the constraint that the whole model is built on.
The second signal is where in the match the drop-off starts. A player whose quality falls in the last ten minutes has a match-budget issue that a substitution solves. A player whose quality falls at the hour is describing a role that is too expensive for the budget, which is a different problem requiring a different answer. Tracking the timing of the drop across a run of matches, rather than reacting to one bad afternoon, gives a coach the distinction.
The third signal is the second match of a congested week, which is the weekly ceiling made visible. A player who is excellent in the first match and flat in the second is not declining, he is being asked to spend twice from an account that funds one withdrawal. The response is rotation and scheduling rather than a role change, and confusing the two leads coaches to restructure a team when they should have rested a player.
The fourth signal is a change in the type of action the player avoids. Players self-protect long before they admit anything, and the avoidance is specific: the forward who stops making the second run into the channel, the wide player who starts receiving to feet rather than in behind, the midfielder who takes the safe angle rather than the one that requires a sprint to support it. None of these are conscious decisions. All of them are information, and all of them point directly at which quality has become expensive, which is the diagnosis the route choice depends on.
The fifth signal is the one that requires honesty rather than observation, which is the trajectory of availability across a period of the season rather than the state of any single injury. A pattern of a player being unavailable more often, described in general terms and without any speculation about causes, is a squad-planning signal that a coach can act on by adjusting role and load, while every question about the specific reasons and about what any individual should do belongs with the medical staff and not with the coaching staff. That division of responsibility is not a formality. It is the line between managing a squad and speculating about a person, and the second is neither useful nor anybody’s business.
Acting on these signals early has a compounding benefit that is easy to underrate. A player moved into a cheaper role while he is still performing carries his form and his standing into the new job, which means the new job starts from a position of authority. A player moved after a visible decline carries the decline with him, and the new role is contaminated by the assumption that it is a holding position before the end. The last point about timing is a warning against the opposite error. Moving too early is also a mistake, and a real one. A forward who still has the budget for his original role and is moved into a cheaper one has been made less valuable by his own coach, and the model gives no licence for pre-emptive restructuring. An analyst watching an older forward has one job that matters more than all the others, which is to distinguish a player who is reallocating from a player who is fading. The two look identical in most of the numbers people quote, and they demand opposite responses from a recruitment department or a coaching staff.
The first marker is the relationship between activity and involvement. A declining player produces fewer high-intensity actions and is involved in fewer of his team’s attacking sequences. An adapting player produces fewer high-intensity actions and is involved in the same number or more.
