A defensive block is a probability machine. It is built to push the ball into the areas where goals are least likely to come from, hold its shape while the attacking side runs out of ideas, and force the eventual entry to arrive from a bad angle with bodies already in front of it. That machine has one input it cannot control, and Gabriel Batistuta is the clearest illustration in the history of the game of what happens when that input arrives. He did not need the entry. He did not need the cutback, the near-post cross, the through ball, or the second phase. He needed a yard of space at twenty metres and a ball sitting up in front of his right foot, and the entire apparatus behind that yard became irrelevant.

When a centre-back steps twelve metres out of the line to press a strike, the line is now a back three with a hole where he was, and the attacking side does not need a clever pattern to use it. A simple set pass to a runner arriving from the far side does the job. That is the whole tension, and the article’s central idea comes from taking it seriously rather than pretending it away.
What made Batistuta’s shooting so difficult to defend?
The strike arrived early and required almost no preparation. Most forwards need a settling touch, a plant, and a backlift; his set-up touch and his strike were effectively one movement, so the defensive window shrank from roughly a second to a fraction of it, and the power meant that even an imperfect contact carried enough pace to punish a goalkeeper who had not already set.
That compression of the sequence is the whole story, and it is worth being precise about the mechanics rather than admiring them. Three things combined. A defending side that drops into a compact mid or low block is making a trade. It gives up territory in order to remove space between and behind its lines. The back four sets its depth by reference to two specific dangers: the ball played in behind, and the ball delivered into the area. Sitting deeper reduces the first because there is less grass to run into. Sitting deeper also lets the midfield line drop close enough that the gap between the lines closes, which reduces the second by making it hard to receive facing goal in the pocket.
But depth is a single number applied to a four-man line, and pushing it down does something else at the same time. It opens a band of grass in front of the block and behind the pressing line, roughly between eighteen and twenty-five metres from goal, which nobody in the shape is responsible for by default. Every metre it dropped to protect the area behind it enlarged the corridor in front of it. The better the block is at its primary job, the bigger the corridor gets.
How do you deny a forward shooting space outside the box?
You designate one player to own the corridor before kick off, give him a specific closing distance and an approach angle rather than an instruction to press, and pair him with a screening partner who covers the pass that his forward movement opens. Without the second man, closing the corridor simply moves the danger from a shot to a runner in behind.
That two-man unit is the answer, and the rest of this article is about how to build it, what it costs, and how to decide in advance which cost you are willing to pay.
The corridor trade: the decision a block makes before kick off
Here is the claim this article advances, and it is worth naming because it generalizes far beyond one forward. Denying a long-range striker always opens a pass. There is no version of closing the corridor that does not create something, because the closing motion is a body leaving a position, and the position it leaves is the pass. That is the corridor trade, and the point of naming it is to force the decision into the week rather than into the ninety minutes.
Most defending sides discover their answer to the corridor trade during the match, which means they discover it after conceding. The centre-back steps once, gets stretched, and the coach shouts at him to hold. The holding midfielder then steps instead, gets played around, and the coach shouts at him to sit. By the hour mark the side has tried three answers, executed none of them, and is defending the corridor with whoever feels brave. That is not a plan; it is a sequence of reactions.
A side that has made the corridor trade in advance behaves differently. It has decided which pass it prefers to concede, and it defends the corridor knowing that the pass is coming and having already agreed what happens next. The available concessions are limited and each has a clear profile.
You can concede the ball in behind the closing defender to a runner from the far side, which is the most dangerous concession but also the one with the most warning, because the runner has to be seen and the recovery is a footrace with cover available if the rest of the line has slid correctly. You can concede the ball wide, by closing on the inside shoulder and showing the forward or the passer toward the touchline, which is the cheapest concession against a side whose crossing is poor and the most expensive against a side whose crossing is good. You can concede the square pass across the corridor to a second shooter, which is cheap if the second shooter is not a threat and disastrous if he is. Or you can concede the strike itself and invest everything in the goalkeeper’s positioning and the blocking angle, which is the modern default and is correct far more often than coaches admit.
The corridor trade is the sentence a coach should be able to say out loud in the team meeting: against this opponent, we are closing the corridor at this distance, from this angle, and the ball we have agreed to give away is that one. Every player who might be involved should be able to repeat it. That is the whole framework, and everything below is detail hung on it.
The reason the framework matters more against this particular forward than against almost anyone else is that the two obvious concessions are both bad. Conceding the strike is bad because the strike quality is exceptional. Conceding the ball in behind is bad because a side built around a forward who threatens from range tends to attack the vacated space by design, since that is the whole point of having him. So the plan has to route toward the two middle options, which are the wide concession and the square concession, and those are the ones a coach has to prepare deliberately because neither is a default behaviour.
The shooting-corridor table
This is the artifact to take into a meeting. Each row is a zone from which the strike becomes available, and the columns are the five decisions that have to be pre-agreed for that zone. Distances are honest approximations for a senior adult side and should be shortened for youth football and lengthened for a slow closing defender.

Two things about the table are worth stating plainly because they are the parts coaches skip. The closing distance is a distance to the ball, not to the man, and against a forward who sets the ball a stride ahead of himself these are different positions. And the approach angle is chosen relative to the strong foot, not relative to the goal, which is why the two half-space rows are not mirror images of each other.
The corridor defender: defining the job precisely
Someone has to own the corridor. In most sides the natural owner is the holding midfielder, because he is already the deepest of the midfield line and his forward movement costs less than a centre-back’s. In some sides it is a centre-back, particularly a back three’s central defender who can step because two cover players remain. In a very few sides it is a second midfielder assigned specifically to the corridor as a man-oriented job.
The job has four parts, and each one is a coachable behaviour rather than a quality.
The first part is recognition. The corridor defender is not waiting for the ball to arrive in the corridor; he is watching the passer. The cue is the body shape of the player about to deliver, because a ball played into the corridor for a strike looks different from a ball played into the corridor to feet. A delivery for the strike is played firm, ahead of the receiver, and into the space he is running onto. A delivery to feet is slower and played to the back foot. The corridor defender who reads the delivery rather than the receiver buys himself roughly half a second, which is the difference between arriving as the set-up touch lands and arriving as the strike leaves.
The second part is departure. He leaves on the pass, not on the touch. Leaving on the touch is too late by definition, because the touch is the set-up and the strike follows it immediately. Leaving on the pass feels early and uncomfortable, and it is the single behaviour that most needs rehearsing, because every instinct in a defensive midfielder tells him to stay connected to the line until he is certain.
The third part is arrival. This is where most coaching goes wrong. The corridor defender is not trying to reach the forward. He is trying to reach a specific point that sits between the ball and the goal, close enough to occupy the striking line and angled so that the forward’s easiest option is the one the defending side has agreed to concede. Arriving fast and square is worse than arriving a half-step later and angled, because a square arrival can be gone past on either side and an angled arrival can only be gone past on one.
The fourth part is what happens after. If the strike does not come, the corridor defender has a second job, which is to stay in front of the ball rather than diving in, because the forward’s next option once the strike is denied is usually a lay-off and a re-entry, and a corridor defender lying on the grass is a corridor defender who has removed himself from the second phase.
Should a defender block the shot or delay the striker?
Delay, in almost every case. A block only works when the defender arrives with the striking line already occupied and his feet set, which is rare. A late block attempt is a slide, a slide is a deflection, and a deflection beats a set goalkeeper more often than a clean strike does. Delay preserves the goalkeeper’s read.
This is the point at which the coaching of a young defender and the coaching of a senior defender diverge sharply. A senior professional who arrives on time with a big frame and a set position genuinely does obstruct the strike, and blocking is part of his job. A fifteen-year-old told to block shots learns to slide at strikes, which is a habit that produces deflections, injuries, and penalties, and which takes years to unlearn. The coaching point for a developing defender is arrive, stay up, take the line, force the reset. The block is a professional refinement, not a foundation.
The closing distance and why two metres is the number that matters
Coaches like round numbers and players need them, so it is worth being specific about where the two-metre figure comes from and what it actually buys.
A strike taken with a short backlift is released roughly a third of a second after the plant foot lands. A defender closing from further than three metres cannot cover the remaining ground in that time and arrives after release, which means his presence has changed nothing except that he is now out of position. A defender who is inside two metres of the ball at the moment the plant foot lands is inside the strike’s release arc, which does three things: it narrows the visible target, it forces the forward to lift the ball more than he wants to in order to clear the obstruction, and it removes the possibility of the low, flat strike into the corner, which is the hardest one to save.
Between two and three metres is the dead zone. The defender is close enough to look committed and far enough away to be irrelevant, and he has vacated his slot for nothing. The instruction that follows from this is uncomfortable but correct: if you cannot get inside two metres of the ball, do not go. Hold the line, stay compact, and let the goalkeeper deal with a clean sight of a strike from range, which is a better outcome than a half-close plus a hole in the line.
That instruction is the hardest one to sell to players, because a defender who holds while a forward strikes from twenty metres looks passive, and if the strike goes in he looks worse. This is why the corridor trade has to be a stated team decision rather than an individual judgment. A player asked to hold his slot while a famous forward shoots needs to know that the coach decided it, that the goalkeeper is set for it, and that the alternative was worse. Without that, he goes, and the plan dies in the first ten minutes.
The screening partner and the rehearsed exchange
The corridor defender cannot work alone, and the second man is the part most sides never build.
When the corridor defender leaves, a slot opens. The screening partner’s job is to fill that slot, and the single most common error is that he fills the wrong thing: he moves toward the ball, because the ball is where the excitement is, and the slot stays open. The rehearsed behaviour is that the screening partner moves away from the ball into the vacated position, which feels wrong to almost every player and has to be drilled until it stops feeling wrong.
Which player screens depends on who owns the corridor. If the holding midfielder is the corridor defender, the screen is the near-side centre-back sliding across and the far-side centre-back tucking, so the back line becomes a compressed three with the far full-back inverted. If a centre-back owns the corridor, the screen is the holding midfielder dropping into the back line, which is the cleaner solution structurally but slower to execute, which is why it suits a side that defends deep and has time.
The exchange itself is a two-part call, and it should be a call rather than a look. The corridor defender announces his departure and the screening partner answers with the slot he has taken. In practice that is two words each, and the reason it must be verbal is that the corridor defender is running away from his own shape and cannot see whether it has been repaired.
There is a third element that separates a good version of this from a mediocre one, which is the far-side compression. When the corridor defender goes and the screen fills, the back line has effectively shifted one place toward the ball, which means the far side of the pitch is now underloaded. The far full-back has to tuck aggressively, and the far winger has to drop into the space the full-back left. If that chain does not happen, the pass that becomes available is not the one in the table; it is the switch, and a side that has closed the corridor beautifully then concedes a clean cross from the far side with its back line already compressed toward the ball.
The complete unit is therefore four players moving on one trigger: the corridor defender leaves, the screening partner fills, the far full-back tucks, the far winger drops. That is the behaviour to rehearse, and it is a whole session on its own before anyone even mentions a named opponent.
The goalkeeper’s job against a striker who shoots early
Everything above changes the goalkeeper’s problem rather than removing it, and the goalkeeper is the most under-coached participant in this duel.
Against an ordinary shooting threat, a goalkeeper can afford to set as the plant foot lands. Against a strike released with a short backlift and heavy pace, setting at the plant foot is setting late, because the set position takes time to reach and a keeper who is still descending into it when the ball leaves has no push available. The adjustment is to set earlier, on the set-up touch rather than on the plant, and to accept that setting earlier costs mobility if the strike does not come.
That cost is real. A keeper set early against a forward who then rolls the ball square is a keeper who has to travel from a static position, which is slower than travelling from a moving one. This is another version of the corridor trade, and it should be made explicitly with the goalkeeper in the meeting rather than left to him in the moment.
The positional question is separate from the timing question. Against a flat, heavy strike, depth matters more than lateral position. A keeper who is half a step off his line reduces the visible target meaningfully without exposing himself to the chip, because a forward striking early from twenty metres is not chipping; the technique that produces the pace is not the technique that produces the lift. So the guidance is straightforward: come off the line by a half step, set early, keep the hands low and in front rather than high and wide, because the flat strike is a low ball and a keeper with high hands is a keeper who has to travel down as well as across.
The last element is the relationship between the keeper and the corridor defender, and it is the one that produces the worst goals when it is absent. If the corridor defender goes and the keeper does not know he has gone, the keeper is setting for a clean strike while a body is about to arrive in the line of it. Deflections off a defender who is inside the keeper’s sight line are close to unsaveable. The call therefore has to travel both ways: the defender announces the close, and the keeper answers with the side he wants shown. A keeper who says show him left and a defender who closes from the left have between them removed most of what makes this duel dangerous.
How did goalkeepers set themselves against Batistuta?
They set early and low. The strike arrived with a short backlift and a flat trajectory, so a keeper waiting for the conventional plant-foot cue was already beaten by pace rather than placement. Setting on the set-up touch, staying a half step off the line, and keeping the hands low was the profile that survived.
The defenders who coped, and what they actually did
The Italian defensive culture of the period he spent at Fiorentina and Roma was the most sophisticated in the world at exactly this problem, which is not a coincidence. A league in which most sides defended in a compact structure and attacked in transition produced a lot of matches in which the corridor was the primary battleground, and the defenders and coaches of that league thought about it more carefully than anyone else.
What the best of them did was not a single technique but a consistent set of choices, and the choices are recognisable across different individuals and different systems.
The first choice was ownership. Italian sides of that era typically played with a designated screening player in front of the back line whose job included the corridor explicitly rather than incidentally. That player was not a ball-winner in the modern sense; he was a positional defender who lived in the band between the lines and whose primary act was occupying the striking line rather than tackling. The corridor was somebody’s job, written on the board, which is more than most sides manage now.
The second choice was the angle. The consistent behaviour was to close from the inside and show toward the touchline, which routed the ball away from the strong-foot strike and toward a delivery. Sides that did this accepted more crosses in exchange for fewer strikes, and against a forward whose aerial threat was real that was not a free trade, which is why they paired it with aggressive near-post defending rather than treating the cross as harmless.
The third choice was the man-oriented option, used selectively rather than as a default. A marker who engaged from behind at contact distance before the reception, rather than closing after it, removed the set-up touch entirely by making the reception uncomfortable. This works only against a forward who receives with his back to goal, which is why it was a situational tool rather than a plan: it handled the drop into midfield and did nothing at all about the ball played into the corridor for a running strike.
The fourth choice, and the one that separates good defending from good coaching, was the concession. The best sides against him did not keep everything. They gave something up on purpose and defended the thing they had given up with a second layer. The most common version was to concede the wide entry and then defend the box with numbers, near post first, second ball designated.
Which defenders coped well with Batistuta?
The defenders who did best were positionally disciplined markers inside compact Italian structures who engaged early rather than closing late, worked from the inside shoulder to show him wide, and were supported by a designated screening player in front of the back line. Individual duels were rarely won; the structure around the duel was.
That last sentence is the honest verdict, and it deserves emphasis because the internet argument about which defender handled which forward tends to assume that duels are won by defenders. They are usually won by plans, and the defender’s contribution is executing a role that somebody designed. A centre-back who is remembered as having handled a great forward well was, almost always, a centre-back inside a structure that had made the corridor trade correctly.
The failure modes, and what causes each one
Every defensive plan against a striking threat fails in one of a small number of ways, and each failure has a specific cause that can be trained out.
The first is the half-close. A defender leaves his slot, arrives at three metres, and stops. The strike goes past him and the slot behind him is empty. The cause is almost never laziness; it is a defender who left late and correctly recognised mid-run that he was not going to arrive, but who had no instruction for what to do about that. The fix is the explicit rule that if you cannot get inside two metres, you do not go, and the corresponding rehearsal of holding while a strike is taken.
The second is the slide. A defender arrives on time, then goes to ground to block. The strike deflects. The cause is the coaching instruction to block shots, delivered without the qualification that a block only exists when the defender is already in the line with his feet set. The fix is to remove the word block from the vocabulary for developing players and replace it with take the line and stay up.
The third is the unrepaired slot. The corridor defender goes, the screening partner watches the ball, and a runner arrives into the vacated position. This is the most common way that a well-intentioned plan produces a worse outcome than no plan at all, and it is the reason the two-man unit has to be rehearsed as a unit rather than as two separate instructions.
The fourth is the goalkeeper set for the wrong event. The keeper is positioned and weighted for a cross, because the ball came from a wide area and the last twenty deliveries from that area were crosses. Then the ball is cut back and struck. The cause is that the keeper is reading the zone rather than the receiver. The fix is a scouting point rather than a technical one: the keeper needs to know which receivers change the event, and to set for the strike whenever one of them is the target.
The fifth is convergence. Two defenders both go, drawn by the same ball, and the pass into the space they both left is a straightforward one. This is a communication failure and it is fixed by ownership: one player owns the corridor for the whole match, and nobody else goes unless the owner is beaten or absent.
The sixth is fatigue drift. The plan holds for an hour and then the closing distances stretch, because closing from a slot to inside two metres is a repeated sprint and legs go. This is a substitution problem rather than a coaching problem, and a side planning to defend a corridor for ninety minutes should plan the change that refreshes it rather than hoping.
Inside the area: the first-time finish and the aerial threat
A plan built only around the corridor solves one problem and leaves two. He finished first time inside the box, and he was a genuine aerial threat, and both of those interact with the corridor plan in ways that matter.
The first-time finish inside the area is a different defensive problem with a different answer. Outside the box the defensive act is occupying a line. Inside the box it is denying the arrival of a clean ball into a striking position, which is a job for the defenders of the delivery rather than the defenders of the striker. The consequence is uncomfortable for a corridor plan: the plan’s preferred concession is often the wide entry, and the wide entry is exactly the service that feeds a first-time finish.
This is why the corridor trade cannot be made in isolation. A side that shows him toward the touchline has to be a side that defends its box well, with a near-post defender who attacks the ball rather than tracking the man, a far-post defender who holds the width of the six-yard box, and a designated player for the cutback zone at the top of the area. If those three jobs are not filled, showing him wide is not a concession; it is a different route to the same goal.
The aerial threat compounds this. A forward who is a real threat with his head means the wide concession costs more, because the deliveries the defence has agreed to allow are now dangerous in two ways rather than one. Against a purely ground-based finisher a coach can afford to concede the early cross from deep, which is a low-value ball. Against a genuine aerial threat that early cross is not low value, and the concession has to move: either close the corridor from the outside and show him inside toward traffic, which is the reverse of the usual instruction and only works with numbers centrally, or accept the strike and defend the corridor with the goalkeeper and the blocking angle alone.
That second option deserves more respect than it gets. Against a forward who is dangerous from range, dangerous first time in the box, and dangerous in the air, there may be no concession that is genuinely cheap, and the correct answer may be to defend the corridor passively, keep eleven players compact and connected, and back the goalkeeper. It is not a heroic plan and it does not look like coaching, but it is coherent, and coherence beats a brave plan that opens two doors instead of one.
Was Batistuta dangerous with his back to goal?
He was competent rather than exceptional there, which is the useful distinction. It says that the expected value of a strike from twenty-two metres is low, and that number is an average over everyone who takes that strike. The moment a specific shooter’s conversion from that band is materially higher than the population average, the arithmetic that produced the recommendation changes, because the recommendation was never about the shot; it was about the probability attached to it.
The practical question is therefore not whether to concede shots from range in general. It is whether this opponent’s shooting quality has moved the number far enough to change the decision, and that is an empirical question a coach can answer without a data budget. Watch the shooter’s strikes from that band across a handful of matches and count three things: how many arrive on target, how many force a save rather than a catch, and how many are struck first time from a set-up touch rather than after a settling sequence. A shooter who hits the target rarely and needs three touches is the population average and should be conceded freely. A shooter who hits the target consistently and needs one touch has moved the number, and the corridor trade is now live.
There is a second and subtler failure in the pure analytical position, which is that it treats each shot as an independent event. A defence that concedes strikes from range is also a defence that has to defend the rebound, the corner that follows the block, and the second phase after the parry. A powerful strike produces more of all three than a weak one, so the true cost of conceding it is higher than the conversion rate alone suggests. This is the most common argument raised about forwards of that era, and it is half right in a way that is worth separating out carefully.
The half that is right: modern defensive structures are more compact vertically than the structures of that period, midfield lines press the ball in the corridor more systematically, and the density of bodies between the ball and the goal at twenty-two metres is higher than it was. A forward who wants to strike early from that band gets fewer clean opportunities to do so, because more of the possessions that used to arrive there now get intercepted, delayed, or forced wide before they arrive.
The half that is wrong: the corridor has not been abolished, it has been narrowed, and narrowing it changes the frequency of the opportunity without changing what happens when the opportunity comes. A modern side that presses aggressively is also a side that plays a higher line, and a higher line means a shorter distance from the ball to goal when a turnover happens in the middle third, which is a more favourable striking position, not a less favourable one. The modern game has fewer slow build-ups into a settled corridor and more chaotic transitions in and around it, and a forward whose defining quality is the ability to strike a moving ball early is well suited to chaos.
There is also a selection effect in the argument that is worth naming. Forwards adapt to the conditions they play in. A player whose defining technical quality is early striking, developing inside modern coaching, would have that quality shaped by modern demands: more pressing work, more receptions under pressure, more strikes taken from transition rather than from settled possession. The counterfactual is not the same player dropped into a different era; it is a differently trained version of the same technical foundation.
The defensible verdict is that modern structures would have reduced the volume of the threat and would not have removed it, and that the specific defensive problem this article describes is not historical at all. The corridor is a function of the gap between the pressing line and the defensive line. Dropping the defensive line widens the corridor. Pushing it up narrows it, because the band between eighteen and twenty-five metres from goal becomes a band that the defensive line itself occupies, and a forward who wants to strike from there is now striking from inside a crowd with defenders goal-side of the ball rather than behind it.
The cost is obvious and it is the reason nobody does this by default: a higher line concedes the ball in behind, and against most elite forwards that is a catastrophic concession. But the cost is a function of the specific opponent’s ability to attack the space behind, and against a forward whose threat is concentrated at the top of the area rather than in the channels running away from goal, the cost is smaller than usual while the benefit is larger than usual.
The practical form of this is not a high defensive line in the modern aggressive sense. It is a mid-block with the back line held five metres higher than the coach’s instinct, with the midfield line correspondingly higher, so that the corridor sits on top of the defensive line rather than in front of it. That is a modest adjustment and it is achievable by an ordinary side, which is more than can be said for most plans against elite forwards.
The condition that makes it viable is the presence of a covering player behind the line, whether a genuine sweeper-keeper or a centre-back with the recovery pace to be the last man in a footrace. Without that condition, do not do it. The corridor plan is a set of coordinated movements on a shared trigger, which means it cannot be installed by explanation. It has to be run until the departure of the corridor defender automatically produces the screen, the tuck, and the drop, and until every player involved has felt the discomfort of the version where they get it wrong.
The principle to establish before any exercise is the corridor trade itself, stated as a sentence and written where players can see it. Players who understand that a concession has been chosen defend the concession calmly. Players who have not been told behave as though every ball is an emergency, which is the behaviour that produces the convergence failure.
The first exercise is a shadow rehearsal without opposition, run at walking pace and then at jogging pace, with a coach serving the ball into the corridor from different origins. The only thing being rehearsed is the four-player chain: the corridor defender departs on the pass, the screening partner fills the vacated slot moving away from the ball, the far full-back tucks, the far winger drops. Nobody defends anything. The coach’s only coaching points are the timing of the departure and the direction of the screening partner’s first step, because those are the two behaviours that everything else depends on.
The second exercise adds a receiver and a decision. Now a forward receives in the corridor and may either strike or lay off, and the corridor defender has to arrive inside the striking arc or hold. The critical constraint is that the coach must award something for the correct hold, because if the only reward available is preventing a strike, every defender will go every time, including the times when going is wrong. Award the defending side a point for a strike taken from outside two metres with the shape intact, and the exercise starts to teach the actual decision instead of teaching bravery.
The third exercise adds the pass that the closing motion opens. Now there is a runner arriving into the vacated slot, and the screening partner’s failure to fill it is punished immediately. This is where the session becomes uncomfortable and where most of the learning happens, because the screening partner will get it wrong repeatedly and will feel the consequence rather than being told about it.
The fourth exercise adds the goalkeeper properly, with the keeper required to declare his set position before the sequence starts and to make the call for which side he wants shown. Goalkeepers are usually installed into these sessions as shot-stoppers, which wastes them. The keeper is a decision-maker in this plan and the session should treat him as one.
The small-squad version compresses this into a seven or eight player exercise: a passer, a receiver in the corridor, a runner, a corridor defender, a screening partner, a far-side defender, and a keeper. That is enough to rehearse the whole chain apart from the far winger’s drop, which can be added verbally. The poor-pitch version matters more than usual, because a heavy or uneven surface changes the set-up touch and therefore changes the timing of the entire sequence, and a corridor defender who has only rehearsed on a good pitch will consistently leave late on a bad one.
The transfer test is specific: in the next match, count the number of times a strike from the corridor was taken with a defender inside two metres of the ball, and the number of times the vacated slot was filled before a runner reached it. Those two counts, tracked over a handful of matches, tell a coach whether the behaviour installed. Goals conceded do not, because the sample is too small and the outcome is too noisy. The scouting question: is the shooting threat real or noise?
Every side has a player who shoots from range. Very few have one whose shooting from range should change your plan, and the analytical error that costs coaches most is treating volume as threat. A midfielder who takes six speculative strikes a match and hits the target twice is not a reason to redesign a defensive structure; he is a reason to be quietly pleased.
The assessment is a short, structured watch that any coach can do without software.
Watch three matches and record only the strikes taken from outside the area. For each one, note four things and nothing else. First, the number of touches between reception and strike, because a one-touch or two-touch strike is a different threat from a four-touch one and the defensive window is entirely determined by that number. Second, whether the strike was on target, because accuracy is the single most informative marker and it is the one that separates a real threat from a habit. Third, whether the goalkeeper caught it, parried it, or was beaten, because a parry is a second-phase event and a threat that produces parries is more dangerous than its conversion rate suggests. Fourth, the side of the body, because a threat that only exists on one side is a threat you can route away from.
Four matches of that produces a small table that answers the question directly. A shooter who takes most of his strikes in one or two touches, hits the target at a rate that stands out, and forces parries rather than catches has moved the number and the corridor trade is worth making. A shooter who fails any of those three tests should be conceded the strike, and the defensive plan should be built entirely around something else.
The second scouting question is where the deliveries into the corridor come from, because that is what determines who needs to press two passes earlier. Note the origin of the passes that put him in a striking position: a wide player’s cutback, a midfielder’s turn and drive, a lay-off from a second forward, or a loose ball in transition. Most sides show a strong pattern. The pressure that removes the threat is almost always pressure on that origin rather than pressure on the shooter, and it costs far less structurally.
The third question, which almost nobody asks, is what the opponent does when the corridor is closed. A side built around a shooting threat has usually rehearsed its answer, and knowing whether that answer is the runner in behind, the switch, or the second shooter tells you which concession you should be choosing. What a young forward can take from the striking technique
The article has been written from the defender’s side, and it is worth turning it around, because the components of the technique are genuinely coachable and most young players are taught the wrong ones.
The first component is the set-up touch, and it is the part that is almost never coached. Young forwards are taught to control the ball, which usually means killing it dead under the sole or the instep. A striking set-up touch is the opposite: a firm contact that pushes the ball a stride ahead and slightly across the body into the exact position the strike wants it. The distance is short and specific, and it should be practised as its own skill, with a target patch of grass rather than a target goal, because the quality of the strike is decided before the strike happens.
The second component is the short backlift. Power in a strike comes from hip rotation, from the speed of the lower leg through the ball, and from a firm plant, and none of those require a long swing. A long backlift is a visual cue to the defender and a delay in the sequence, and young players adopt it because it feels like where power comes from. The drill is straightforward: strike from a restricted backlift, with a coach or a partner watching for the leg going back past a fixed marker, and let the player discover that the ball still travels.
The third component is contact through the middle of the ball rather than under it. A flat, heavy strike is harder to save than a rising one because the keeper’s hands have to travel down as well as across, and because it arrives sooner. Young players lift the ball because lifting it feels like hitting it hard. The correction is a low target, a strike that must stay below a rope or a bar at a fixed distance, and repetition until the flat contact is the default.
The fourth component is the willingness to strike from positions that are not classically good, which is a decision rather than a technique. This one needs care in the coaching, because the same willingness that produces the threat produces the aimless speculative shot, and the difference between the two is whether the player has the technique to make the position pay. The honest instruction is that the strike from range is earned: build the set-up touch and the flat contact first, and the range extends as a consequence rather than as a permission.
The fifth is that none of this replaces the box. A forward who strikes well from range and cannot finish first time inside the area has one route to goal, and defences close single routes easily. The technique is an addition to a finishing game, not a substitute for one.
What can a young forward learn from Batistuta’s striking technique?
Three coachable components: a firm set-up touch that pushes the ball a stride ahead into the striking position, a short backlift with power generated by hip rotation rather than swing length, and contact through the middle of the ball for a flat trajectory. All three can be practised without a goalkeeper.
Back four or back three: which structure defends the corridor better
The structural question is worth answering directly, because the two shapes produce genuinely different versions of the corridor and coaches often assume the answer without checking it.
A back four defends the corridor badly by default and well when adjusted. Badly by default because the four-man line has no spare player: every defender is responsible for a horizontal zone, and any one of them stepping into the corridor leaves a hole that the remaining three have to cover by sliding, which stretches the line laterally at the moment it most needs to be compressed. Well when adjusted because the adjustment is simple and familiar, namely that the holding midfielder owns the corridor and the back four does not move at all. The four-man line’s strength here is that it can hold completely still while the corridor is defended by somebody else, and holding still is exactly what a defensive line facing a striking threat should do.
A back three defends the corridor better in principle and worse in practice. Better in principle because the central defender of a three has cover on both sides and can step into the corridor without leaving a hole, which is the cleanest solution available in any shape. Worse in practice because the step is aggressive, the timing is difficult, and a central defender who steps late in a back three is a central defender who has committed the one player whose absence cannot be covered. It also depends heavily on the wing-backs, who have to tuck into the line as the step happens, and wing-backs are usually the players most reluctant to abandon width.
The recommendation is straightforward. If the side has a genuine positional holding midfielder who can be trusted to depart on the pass and arrive angled, use a back four and give him the corridor, because that is the version with the fewest moving parts. If the side does not have that player but does have a front-footed central defender in a three with two disciplined partners, use the back three and give the corridor to the stepping defender. Do not attempt the back three version with a defender who is not comfortable stepping, because the failure mode is the worst one available.
The amateur-level answer is simpler than either. At most levels below professional football, the corridor should be defended by the holding midfielder in a back four, the closing distance should be shortened to whatever the player can actually reach, and if he cannot reach it, the plan should be to hold shape and concede the strike. The single biggest improvement available to an amateur side is not a better closing technique; it is the elimination of the half-close, which costs them goals every week and buys them nothing.
The transition corridor, which is the one most sides never plan for
Everything above assumes a settled defensive shape, and settled shapes are not where most damage from a striking threat actually happens at any level. The dangerous version is the transition version, and it has a different mechanism and a different answer.
In transition, the corridor does not exist as a stable band of grass. It exists as a moving window that opens for a second or two while the defending side is running backward and the attacking side is running forward. The forward arriving into it is not receiving to feet; he is running onto a loose or forward ball with momentum already built, which removes the set-up touch problem entirely because the ball is already moving in the right direction.
The defensive act in transition is therefore not closing. It is angle. A defender recovering toward his own goal in front of a forward with the ball has one job, which is to run a recovery line inside the striking line rather than level with the forward. Running level looks correct and is useless, because it leaves the strike available at every moment. Running inside the line, slightly ahead of the ball’s path toward goal, means the forward’s strike has to be taken across the recovering defender, which either delays it or bends it away from goal.
The second element is the nearest midfielder, who has a choice that must be made in advance: track the ball or track the runner beyond the ball. The default instinct is to chase the ball, which produces two players converging on the ball carrier and a free runner. The rule that works is that the recovering defender takes the ball’s line and the nearest midfielder takes the runner, always, without discussion.
The third element is the goalkeeper’s starting position, which in transition should be higher than in a settled phase, because the space behind is the greater danger and because a keeper who has started high can drop as the situation settles far more easily than a keeper who has started deep can advance.
For a side that concedes most of its damage in transition, this is the section that matters and the settled corridor plan is close to decorative. It is worth being honest about which kind of side you are before spending a week rehearsing the wrong problem.
Game management: how the plan changes with the scoreline
A corridor plan is not a constant, and the conditions under which it should tighten or loosen are predictable enough to be decided in advance.
When the defending side is leading, the corridor plan should tighten, because a leading side is by definition inviting more possession into the band in front of its area and the volume of opportunities rises. The specific adjustments are that the closing distance instruction stays the same but the corridor defender’s departure trigger moves earlier, and that the far-side compression becomes non-negotiable rather than desirable. The temptation when leading is to drop everybody deeper, which is exactly the wrong response, because dropping deeper enlarges the corridor at the moment the opponent is most likely to use it.
When the defending side is behind, the corridor plan mostly dissolves, because a chasing side is pressing higher and the corridor as a band of grass in front of a compact block no longer exists. What replaces it is the transition version above, and the relevant preparation is the recovery-line rule rather than the closing distance.
When the match is level and late, the decision is the substitution. Closing a corridor repeatedly is a sprint-heavy job and the player doing it will fade. A side that has planned this properly has a replacement corridor defender on the bench and a stated time window for the change, made on the clock rather than on the eye, because the eye consistently overestimates how much a tiring player has left.
The last game-management point is the message at the interval. A side that has conceded a strike from the corridor in the first half will arrive at the break wanting to close harder. That is the wrong adjustment nine times in ten. The right adjustment is usually to check whether the screening partner filled the slot, whether the far side compressed, and whether the goalkeeper was set, because a strike that beats a correctly executed plan is a good strike and the plan should not be abandoned on one event.
The debate, answered
Several positions recur whenever this forward’s career is discussed, and each deserves a direct answer rather than a shrug.
That he was a specialist rather than a complete forward. Partly true and less damning than it sounds. That the strike from range is an inefficient act and celebrating it teaches young players a bad habit. Genuinely worth engaging, and the answer is in the coaching order. The strike from range is a bad habit when it substitutes for a finishing game and a legitimate weapon when it is added to one. A young forward who shoots from twenty-five metres because he cannot find a better option is doing something different from one who shoots because the technique makes it a good option.
Denying the delivery: the defensive act that happens two passes earlier
The most effective work against a striking threat is rarely done by the player marking him, and a plan that begins at the moment he receives has already given away most of its leverage.
Every strike from the corridor requires a ball delivered into it in a strikeable state, and that delivery is made by somebody. The four common origins are a wide player cutting the ball back from the byline area, a midfielder turning and driving before releasing, a second forward laying the ball off from a back-to-goal reception, and a loose ball in transition. Three of those four are the product of a specific opponent doing a specific thing, and all three can be attacked directly.
Against the wide cutback origin, the defensive act is the full-back’s body position at the moment the wide player prepares to deliver. A full-back who shows the winger toward the byline rather than allowing him to cut inside and look up has converted the delivery from a cutback into a cross, and a cross does not feed the corridor. The cost is the aerial threat, which is the same trade the whole article keeps returning to.
Against the turn-and-drive origin, the defensive act is pressure on the midfielder’s first touch. A midfielder who receives facing his own goal and has to turn before he can look up delivers late and imperfectly, and the delivery arrives bouncing or under-hit, which forces the extra touch that gives the corridor defender his window. This is a pressing decision made in midfield rather than a defending decision made near the box, and it is why a side with a weak midfield press cannot solve a corridor problem with better defending.
Against the lay-off origin, the defensive act is the marker’s engagement from behind at contact distance before the second forward receives. A lay-off made under contact is a lay-off made without vision, and a lay-off made without vision does not arrive in a strikeable state. This is the one origin where aggressive man-orientation genuinely earns its cost.
Against the transition origin, there is no delivery to deny, which is why the transition version of the problem needs the separate recovery-line answer set out above.
The reason to structure the plan this way rather than around the marking assignment is that denying the delivery costs almost nothing. Pressure applied in midfield is pressure a side was probably applying anyway, and redirecting it toward one specific origin is a small adjustment with a large return. Redesigning the back line around a corridor is a large adjustment with a large return and a large risk. The order of operations should therefore be: attack the delivery first, adjust the line height second, and design the closing plan third, rather than starting at the end.
Why the two half-spaces need different instructions
The table above gives different instructions for the right and left half-spaces, and the asymmetry is the detail that most distinguishes a real plan from a generic one, so it is worth working through.
A right-footed forward receiving in the right half-space has the ball on his strong side with the goal in front of him and slightly to his left. The strike available to him from there is the one struck across his body toward the far post, which is the most difficult strike for a goalkeeper to reach because it moves away from him for its entire flight. Denying it means getting the closing defender between the ball and the far post, which requires an approach from the inside, and the consequence of approaching from the inside is that the outside is open, which routes the ball toward the touchline. The same forward receiving in the left half-space has the ball across his body. The strike available is the inswinging one struck toward the near post or bent back across the keeper, which is a harder strike to execute and a slightly easier one to read.
