A back four is an argument about probability. It positions itself to deny the angles from which goals are likely and to concede the angles from which they are not, and every instruction inside it, the depth of the line, the distance between the centre-backs, the moment the full-back tucks, follows from that single judgment about which finishes are available and which are not. The defending is not the argument. The defending is what happens after the argument has been settled. This article is about what a defence can actually do about that, and the honest answer is that there are exactly two things, because the third thing, out-defending the technique in the moment of the finish, does not exist as an option.

The duel: what actually decides it

Start by being precise about where the contest happens, because most discussions of this duel put it in the wrong place.

The popular version imagines a centre-back and a forward wrestling for position in the area while a cross comes in. That is a real duel and it is not the one that decided matches. The decisive sequence begins earlier and ends faster. A ball is delivered into a position the defence has classified as low-value, usually wide of the six-yard box, above waist height, moving away from goal, or arriving at a height that requires the receiver to do something unusual. The defence’s shape reflects that classification: the near defender is goal-side but not tight, the far defender is holding the width of the box, the goalkeeper is positioned for a cross or a cutback rather than for a shot. Then the ball is struck first time, from that position, on a line the goalkeeper is not weighted for, and the sequence is over.

The contest, in other words, was decided before the ball arrived, by a set of positional choices that were correct under an assumption that turned out to be false. That is why the coaching answer cannot be about the moment of contact. By the moment of contact there is nothing left to coach.

Break the forward’s action into components and the defensive leverage points appear. There is the delivery, which has an origin, a height, and a trajectory. There is the reception, which for an ordinary forward is a control and for this one was frequently the finish itself. There is the body position at the moment of contact, specifically whether the ball is on the side of the body he wants it on. And there is the contact, which is the part a defence cannot influence at all.

Three of those four are attackable. The delivery can be denied, degraded, or redirected. The reception height can be influenced by where the pressure comes from. The body side can be forced. The contact cannot be touched, which is precisely why the two available answers are the ones they are.

What made van Basten’s finishing angles so unusual?

Ordinary finishing requires the ball below the knee and reasonably square to the target. His technique worked with the ball at hip and chest height, moving across him, and from wide positions with the goal at a narrow angle, because the contact was made through the ball with a rotated hip rather than by squaring up first. The recalibration problem

Here is the claim this article advances, and it is deliberately not a claim about one player. Elite technique does not beat a defensive structure. If a goal is a defending failure, the response is more repetition of the defensive act: hold the line, get tighter, communicate. If a goal is a calibration failure, the response is to redraw the map of which positions are dangerous and rebuild the shape around the new map, which is a completely different week of work.

The reason coaches so rarely make this distinction is that calibration failures look exactly like defending failures from the touchline. A ball goes into a wide position at chest height, a forward hits it first time into the far corner, and every instinct says somebody should have been tighter. Somebody could have been tighter. But the reason nobody was is that the defensive shape had four other jobs to do with those bodies, and it allocated them according to a ranking of dangers in which that position sat near the bottom. Getting tighter there means being looser somewhere else, and unless the coach has consciously decided that the somewhere else is now the cheaper concession, tightening is not an improvement. It is a reshuffle.

The recalibration problem has a diagnostic that separates it from ordinary defensive failure, and it is worth stating because it is usable. Ask whether the defenders were where the plan wanted them. If they were not, it is an execution problem and the answer is coaching. If they were exactly where the plan wanted them and the goal happened anyway, it is a calibration problem and the answer is a new plan. Against a forward whose technique recalibrates the map, the practical consequence is that the defence has to decide which newly dangerous positions it will now defend properly, and which previously safe positions it will now leave, because the total number of bodies has not changed. That decision is the plan. Everything else is detail.

What the technique actually did to the map

To recalibrate, you have to know which positions moved, so it is worth working through the specific conversions rather than talking about technique in the abstract.

The first conversion is the ball above waist height inside the area. A standard back four treats a high ball into the box as an aerial contest, which it defends with body position and jumping, and it treats a ball at hip or chest height as an awkward ball that will require the forward to control it first, which gives the defence time. A technique that strikes cleanly at hip and chest height removes the middle category entirely. There is no awkward height. Every height is a finishing height, which means the defensive act has to be the same for a hip-high ball as for a knee-high one, and most defensive coaching does not treat them the same.

The second conversion is the wide reception at a narrow angle. Defences concede the position wide of the six-yard box because finishing from there requires either squaring up, which takes time, or striking across the body at an angle where the target is small. A technique that strikes across the body without squaring up first converts a position the defence had allocated one loose defender to into a position that needs a tight one.

The third conversion is the ball arriving from behind or across. Ordinary forwards want the ball delivered ahead of them, running onto it. A ball arriving from behind the shoulder or moving across the body away from goal is a difficult ball, which is why defences push forwards into positions where those are the only deliveries available. A technique that handles those deliveries in one movement removes the last refuge of that defensive idea.

The fourth conversion, and the one with the largest structural consequence, is the reduction of the touch count. Every defensive plan is a plan about time. The touch count determines the time available, and a forward who finishes in one touch from positions where two or three were assumed has cut the defence’s window by half or more in exactly the positions where the defence had allocated the fewest bodies, because it allocated fewest bodies precisely where it expected to have the most time.

That fourth point is the whole recalibration problem in one sentence. The positions where a technique like this hurts most are the positions the defence felt safest about, because safety and body allocation are the same decision.

The two answers, and why there are only two

Given that the contact cannot be defended, the available answers reduce to acting on the two components upstream of it.

The first answer is denying the service. If the ball does not arrive in a finishable state, the technique has nothing to work with. This is the answer that sounds obvious and is almost never executed properly, because denying service is a job for players nowhere near the forward and coaches habitually assign the problem to the players nearest to him.

The second answer is forcing the reception onto the wrong side of the body. Every finisher, however good, has a side on which the finish is faster and a side on which it is slower. Forcing the ball onto the slower side does not prevent the finish. It restores time, which restores the defence’s ability to be present, which restores the relevance of everything the structure was built to do.

There is no third answer. You cannot defend the contact, you cannot out-position technique in the instant, and you cannot cover every position on a recalibrated map with eleven players. Sides that tried a third answer, usually some version of putting more bodies in the box and hoping, made themselves worse in every other phase and did not solve the problem they were trying to solve.

How do you defend a forward with elite volleying technique?

Attack the delivery and the body side, because the contact cannot be defended. Deny or degrade the balls that arrive at hip and chest height, force the reception onto the slower side of the body so that time returns to the defence, and set the goalkeeper for a shot rather than for a cross whenever that forward is the target.

Answer one: denying the service, in detail

Service denial is a phrase coaches use loosely, so it is worth breaking into the specific acts that produce it, because each one belongs to a different player and requires a different instruction.

The first act is the wide defender’s body position at the moment of delivery. A wide player who is allowed to face the pitch, look up, and choose his height is a wide player who will find the finishable ball. A wide player forced to deliver on the run, from a body position that is turning, or with a defender across his standing side, delivers whatever the ball allows rather than what he wants. The instruction is not press the crosser; it is take away the delivery he is looking for, which usually means showing him toward the byline where the only ball available is a hard flat one into a crowd, or showing him backward where the only ball available is a slow one from deep.

The second act is denial of the second-phase delivery, which is the one that produces the most dangerous receptions. A ball played wide, then cut back, then clipped into the area is a ball delivered by a player who has had time to see the picture. The defence’s leverage is on the cutback rather than on the clip, which means a designated defender at the top of the area whose job is the cutback lane rather than a body in the six-yard box.

The third act is the aerial contest earlier in the sequence. Many finishable balls arrive as second balls from a first contest won or half-won elsewhere. A defence that wins the first header cleanly rather than merely contesting it removes the entire sequence, which is why a plan against this kind of forward should begin with the first defender rather than the last.

The fourth act is the tempo of the whole possession. Deliveries into difficult heights are usually made from settled possession, because a player under pressure plays the simple ball. A side that presses the origin of possession, even without winning the ball, converts chosen deliveries into forced ones, and forced deliveries do not arrive at hip height in the right place.

Service denial therefore involves the full-back, the wide midfielder, the defensive midfielder, and the first pressing player, and involves the centre-backs marking the forward barely at all. Answer two: forcing the reception onto the wrong side

The second answer is the only one that belongs to the defenders closest to the forward, and it is a technique rather than a principle, so it can be coached directly.

The mechanics are these. The defender positions himself not directly behind the forward and not directly goal-side, but on the side of the forward from which the fast finish comes, close enough that a ball arriving on that side has to be taken with contact. The forward’s options are then to receive on the slower side, which returns time, or to fight for the fast side, which delays the reception and again returns time. Either way the defender has bought back the commodity his structure needs.

The three specifics that make this work, and whose absence makes it fail, are as follows. The contact has to be established before the ball arrives, because a defender who arrives at the same time as the ball has established nothing and is simply a body the forward can use as a screen. The contact has to be on the arm and shoulder rather than the hip, because hip contact allows the forward to spin and arm contact does not, and because hip contact from behind is a foul in the area far more often than shoulder contact is. And the defender’s own body has to be angled so that his standing side is between the ball and the goal, because a defender who has correctly forced the wrong side and then finds himself square is a defender who has done the hard part and thrown away the benefit.

The failure mode has a name in every defensive dressing room, which is getting the wrong side, and it happens for a predictable reason: the defender chooses his side based on where the goal is rather than on where the ball is coming from. Against a delivery from the right, the fast side for a right-footed forward is often not the side facing goal. The defender who thinks in terms of goal-side alone will consistently pick the wrong shoulder against exactly the deliveries that matter most.

How did defenders cope with van Basten’s first touch?

Its purpose is to make the coach state, before the match, which of the seven rows he is going to defend properly and which he is going to leave, because eleven players cannot do all seven at once and pretending otherwise is how a defence ends up doing none of them.

Which rows to defend, and how to choose

The choice is not arbitrary and it follows from the opponent’s supply rather than from the forward.

Look at where the deliveries into the area actually come from. If the opponent’s chance creation runs through wide overloads and cutbacks, rows two and five are the live ones and the plan should be built on the full-backs and the cutback owner, with the centre-backs instructed to hold the width of the six-yard box rather than following the ball. If chance creation runs through central combinations and clipped passes from the half-space, rows one and three are live and the plan needs a midfielder taking away the clip’s origin, which is a pressing decision made twenty-five metres from the defended goal.

If the opponent is a possession side that circulates until the defence shifts, the deliveries will arrive at chosen heights from settled positions, which means the whole plan should be weighted toward service denial and tempo disruption rather than toward the box. If the opponent attacks primarily in transition, the deliveries will be forced and imperfect, the reception heights will be less controllable, and the plan should be weighted toward body-side forcing, because the forward will more often be receiving on the run with a defender able to establish contact.

The goalkeeper’s problem when the map is wrong

The goalkeeper is the position most damaged by a calibration failure, because his positioning is more assumption-dependent than anyone else’s and he has the least time to correct.

A goalkeeper’s starting position in any given moment is a bet about what is going to happen next. Facing a delivery from a wide area, the standard bet is that a cross is coming, which means weight on the balls of the feet ready to travel across the goal, position toward the near post, and hands ready to claim rather than to save. Facing a shot, the bet is entirely different: set, still, hands low and in front, position on the line of the strike rather than the line of the cross.

Those two bets are close to incompatible, and a keeper who is wrong is not slightly wrong. He is committed to the wrong movement pattern with no time to reverse it, which is why finishes from recalibrated positions so often look, on replay, like a keeper standing still.

The workable adjustment is not for the keeper to prepare for both. It is for the keeper to know which receivers change the bet, and to set for the shot whenever one of them is the target regardless of what the delivery looks like. That costs him something real, because setting for a shot against a cross means arriving late to the claim, and a keeper who does this against every delivery will drop crosses all afternoon. So the instruction has to be specific to the receiver rather than to the zone, which means the keeper needs the scouting information as much as the defenders do and is usually the last person in the building to get it.

The second adjustment is depth. Against a technique that finishes across the body at narrow angles, the near post is not the primary danger; the far corner is, because the ball is travelling away from the keeper for its whole flight. A keeper set too far toward the near post has covered the shot that is not coming. How did goalkeepers deal with van Basten’s placement?

A technical ground threat at awkward heights is defended with proximity, body-side forcing, and staying goal-side. It rewards a defender who never loses contact and who prioritises the man’s body position over the ball. Those are different players and different instructions, and a defender asked to do both will do the first one, because attacking the ball is the more natural instinct.

The honest reading of this particular profile is that the ground threat was the greater problem, and that the aerial threat was real enough to prevent a defence from ignoring it. That combination is the worst possible one for a defensive plan, because it means the aerial threat cannot be conceded outright while the ground threat is the one that has to be prioritised. The resolution most sides reached, and the one that still works, is to defend the air collectively and the ground individually: zonal protection of the key aerial zones so that no single defender has to make an aerial choice, freeing the nearest defender to stay man-oriented on the body-side forcing job.

That resolution has a cost, which is that zonal aerial protection is beatable by a well-timed run from deep, and a side that adopts it must accept conceding some clean headers from runners other than the forward being planned against. Naming that cost in advance is the difference between a plan and a hope.

The offside trap, and why it was the wrong tool

Sides facing a forward of this kind frequently reached for the offside trap, and it is worth explaining why that instinct was misdirected rather than simply saying it failed.

The trap is a tool for a specific problem: a forward whose threat depends on running beyond the last line into space behind it. Against that threat the trap is efficient, because it converts the forward’s greatest asset into a stoppage, and the risk it carries, a single mistimed step, is offset by the frequency with which it removes the danger.

The threat in question here was not primarily a running-beyond threat. It was a receiving-and-finishing threat, concentrated in and around the area, from balls delivered to him rather than played beyond him. A trap sprung against a forward who is not running beyond the line achieves nothing except that the line is now higher, which enlarges the space in front of the goalkeeper and makes every reception in the area more dangerous. The tool addressed a danger that was not the main one and worsened the danger that was.

There is a second and subtler failure. Stepping up requires the defensive line to move as a unit on a shared trigger, and the moment of the step is the moment the line is least able to react to a ball played into feet. A forward with a first touch that turns into a finish is precisely the forward who punishes a line in the middle of a coordinated movement, because the coordination is horizontal and the danger is arriving at a different height.

The correct tool against this profile is a compact line held at a moderate depth with the emphasis on the distance between the defensive and midfield lines rather than on the height of the back four. Compactness between the lines removes the clipped ball into the pocket, which is the delivery that produces the most dangerous receptions. Height of the line does very little either way.

Did the offside trap work against van Basten?

Not reliably, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of timing. The trap answers a forward who runs beyond the last line, and his threat was concentrated in receiving and finishing inside and around the area. Springing it raised the line, enlarged the space in front of the goalkeeper, and left the actual danger untouched.

What the midfield behind him had to do

A plan against a forward is never only a plan against a forward, and the midfield’s contribution here was larger than the back four’s.

The first midfield job was denial of the clip. The single most productive delivery into a technical finisher is the clipped pass from the half-space into the area at hip or chest height, and that pass has a small number of possible origins. Taking away the origin is a positional job for a holding midfielder or a covering number eight, and it is done by occupying the passing lane rather than by pressing the passer, because pressing the passer opens the lane behind the pressing player.

The second midfield job was the second-ball designation. Every contested aerial delivery produces a loose ball, and a technical finisher near a loose ball in the area is a goal waiting to happen. The designation should be a named player positioned at the top of the area rather than an instruction to everyone to react, because reactive second-ball defending in a crowded box is decided by who guesses first, and the forward is guessing better.

The third midfield job was tempo. Deliveries at difficult heights come from settled possession. A midfield that disrupts the rhythm of build-up, even without recovering the ball, converts chosen deliveries into hurried ones. This is the least glamorous contribution and the largest in effect, and it is why a defence with a passive midfield in front of it cannot solve a technical finisher no matter how well it defends the box.

The fourth job, in transition, was preventing the forward from receiving facing forward in the space vacated by a midfield that had committed. This is the ordinary rest-defence problem and it applies here in an ordinary way, but with a sharper penalty, because a technical finisher receiving facing goal at twenty metres has options a running finisher does not.

What did van Basten demand from the midfield behind him?

From his own midfield, deliveries at chosen heights from settled possession, which required players comfortable clipping the ball into the area rather than crossing it. From an opposing midfield, it demanded lane occupation rather than pressing, a designated second-ball defender at the top of the area, and enough disruption of build-up rhythm that deliveries arrived hurried.

Was he dependent on the service around him?

The question is asked in a loaded way in most discussions, usually as a way of diminishing a forward who played in strong sides, so it is worth separating the two things it runs together.

The first thing is whether the threat required good service to exist at all. Every forward’s output depends on supply, and a technical finisher’s dependency is real but unusual in shape: he required less precision than most finishers, because the range of heights and angles he could use was wider, but he required delivery into the area rather than delivery in behind, which is a supply pattern that not every side can produce.

The second thing is whether the quality of the sides around him inflates the assessment. That is a different question, and the honest answer is that it partly does for output and does not at all for the defensive problem, which is what this article is about. A defence facing this profile has the same problem whether the forward is in a great side or an ordinary one; the frequency of the problem changes and the nature of it does not.

For a coach, the practically useful version is the supply question rather than the greatness question. A forward whose threat depends on clipped deliveries into the area is a forward you can plan against by attacking the clip, and that is true regardless of how good the players producing the clip are. A forward whose threat depends on nothing in particular, because he creates his own chances from deep, cannot be planned against that way. This profile sat firmly in the first category, which is good news for a defence and is the single most exploitable fact about him.

He did, and it created a genuine dilemma for a back four rather than a simple one.

The drop pulls a marker out of the line. A marker who follows leaves a hole; a marker who does not follow allows a reception facing the pitch with time. Against most forwards a defence resolves this by handing the drop to a midfielder and holding the line, which is the standard answer and is usually correct.

It is less clearly correct here, for a specific reason. A technical forward who receives facing away from goal with a midfielder engaging him from behind is a forward who lays the ball off and then runs into the area, and the reception he is running toward is the dangerous one. So the standard answer solves the drop and feeds the finish. The alternative, following him out with a centre-back, solves the finish and opens the line.

The resolution that works is a split: the midfielder engages the drop from behind at contact distance to make the lay-off uncomfortable, and the centre-back who would have followed instead tracks the return run into the area rather than holding a flat line. That is a demanding piece of coordination and it requires the two players to agree in advance who owns which phase of the same movement. Sides that got this right defended the sequence rather than the position, which is the underlying lesson.

Yes, and the drop functioned as the first half of a sequence rather than as a separate act. He would receive away from goal, lay the ball off, and run into the area for the return delivery. Defences that treated the drop and the run as two problems handled by two players, coordinated in advance, coped better than those that treated the drop alone.

Limiting him inside the box: what actually reduced the damage

Inside the area the recalibration problem is at its sharpest, because the area is where every defensive assumption is densest and where the consequences of a wrong assumption are immediate.

The sides that limited the damage did four things consistently, and none of them involved a defender doing something heroic in the moment of the finish.

The first was tightness proportional to reception height rather than to distance from goal. A conventional defence gets tighter as the ball gets closer to goal and looser as it gets further away, which is sensible and is the wrong axis here. The axis that mattered was height: a ball arriving at hip or chest level required tight contact wherever it arrived, and a ball arriving on the ground could be defended more loosely because a ground ball demanded a control. Sides that reorganised their tightness rule around height rather than distance defended the area better without adding bodies.

The second was the near-post rule. Because the dangerous finish moved away from the goalkeeper rather than toward him, the near post could be defended by a body and the far side had to be defended by the keeper. Sides that inverted this, keeper at the near post and a defender covering the far side, defended the shot that was not coming.

The third was the refusal to converge. In a crowded area, the instinct of every defender is to move toward the ball. Convergence produces two defenders on one ball and an unmarked forward two metres away, and the forward’s technique meant that two metres was enough. What is not coachable is the aggregate. The combination of technique, decision speed, and spatial judgment that produces a finisher of this quality is not assembled by a curriculum. But the components are worth teaching anyway, because a player who has three of the four is a better finisher than one who has none, and the alternative, treating the whole thing as magic, guarantees that nobody develops any of it.

The contrast that clarifies the whole cluster

Installing the plan: what the training week looks like

The two answers, service denial and body-side forcing, are trained in completely different parts of the pitch and by completely different players, which is the practical reason so few sides install both.

Service denial is trained as a pressing and lane-occupation exercise, and it belongs early in the week when the running load is affordable. The core exercise is a possession game in which one team can only score by delivering a ball into a marked area at above knee height, and the defending team’s only objective is to prevent deliveries of that specific type. The constraint does all the coaching: players discover that pressing the deliverer’s standing side and occupying the lane are more effective than closing him down, because closing him down and being beaten produces exactly the delivery the game is designed to prevent.

The progression adds the second-phase clip, by allowing a cutback that resets the delivery opportunity, which forces the defending side to designate an owner for the cutback lane. That designation is the behaviour the exercise exists to produce.

Body-side forcing is trained as a duel exercise, and it belongs in a separate part of the session because it is a contact skill and requires a different intensity and a different safety brief. The core exercise is a served ball at a fixed height to a receiver with a defender behind him, and the defender’s only objective is to make the reception happen on the nominated side. The receiver scores by receiving on his preferred side, which inverts the usual scoring and stops the exercise collapsing into a tackling drill.

The progression adds a finish, which changes the defender’s incentives and reveals whether the forcing habit survives the presence of a goal. It usually does not on the first attempt, because a defender who can see a goal being scored abandons the body-side job to make a block, which is the exact behaviour the whole plan is designed to prevent.

Both exercises then combine into a functional practice in the final third, with the delivery restricted by height, the reception contested, and the goalkeeper required to declare his set before each sequence. The goalkeeper’s declaration is not decoration: it forces him to make the shot-versus-cross decision consciously and repeatedly, which is the only way that decision becomes fast.

The small-squad version keeps the duel exercise intact, since it needs four players and a server, and reduces the service-denial game to a three against three in a narrow area with a target zone. The transfer test is a count rather than an outcome. Over several matches, record how many deliveries arrived in the opponent’s dangerous receiving zone above knee height, and how many receptions in the area happened on the forward’s preferred side. The clipped delivery, examined properly

Because the whole service-denial answer rests on one specific pass, it is worth examining that pass rather than referring to it in passing.

The clipped delivery is a ball played from the half-space, roughly level with or slightly ahead of the penalty area, lifted over a defensive line and dropped into the area at between hip and chest height. It is not a cross, it is not a through ball, and it is not a cutback, and the reason it is so productive against a technical finisher is that it is the only delivery that reliably arrives at the height his technique wants while still landing in a dangerous position.

Three things make it hard for a defence to handle. It is played from a position that a defensive block does not press aggressively, because pressing there opens the lane behind the presser. Its flight is short, so there is very little time between the ball leaving the passer and arriving at the receiver, which is far less warning than a cross gives. And its landing point is chosen rather than approximate, which means the defence cannot rely on the delivery being imperfect.

The defensive answers are three and they are all positional rather than athletic. The amateur version, and how the plan degrades

Everything in this article assumes players capable of executing precise positional instructions repeatedly, and most football is not played by those players, so the plan needs an honest degraded version.

At amateur level the service-denial answer survives almost intact and the body-side forcing answer largely does not. The reason is that lane occupation is a standing-still skill, which fatigue and limited training time affect less than a contact-timing skill. An amateur holding midfielder can be told to stand in a specific lane and will do it. An amateur centre-back told to establish shoulder contact a fraction of a second before the ball arrives will either arrive late, which achieves nothing, or foul, which is worse.

The practical amateur plan therefore weights everything toward the first answer. Occupy the lane. Show the wide player toward the byline. Keep the distance between the defensive and midfield lines short. Designate one player for the cutback. Then, in the area, replace the body-side forcing instruction with something simpler and more robust: get goal-side and stay on your feet, and do not converge on the ball.

The goalkeeper instruction survives intact and is the highest-return item on the list at amateur level, because amateur goalkeepers are almost never given a shot-versus-cross decision rule and almost always weight for the cross by default. Telling one goalkeeper to set for the shot when a specific opponent is the target is a five-minute conversation with a genuine return.

The one thing an amateur side should not attempt is the recalibrated shape with three players adjusting to defend a wide reception properly. It requires coordination that a side training once a week cannot hold, and a half-executed version is worse than the standard shape, because it opens the positions it vacated without properly covering the ones it moved to.

What he gave his own side, and why it matters to the counter-plan

An article written entirely from the defensive side risks describing a finishing machine, and the description would be wrong in a way that affects the plan, so it is worth stating what else the profile contained.

He held the ball and combined, which meant his side could play forward into him under pressure and keep possession, and that changes the defensive problem in a specific way: a side cannot escape him by pressing high, because the pressing escape route runs through him. Scouting: how to identify a forward who invalidates your model

The recalibration problem is only useful to a coach if he can spot it in advance, and the good news is that identification is far easier than the counter-plan. It takes three matches and a notepad.

The first thing to record is the touch count on finishes. For every attempt the forward makes inside and around the area, note how many touches passed between the ball reaching him and the strike. A forward whose attempts are overwhelmingly two and three touch is an ordinary finishing problem and your existing map is fine. A forward with a meaningful share of one-touch attempts from positions that are not tap-ins is a candidate.

The second is the reception height on those one-touch attempts. Ground receptions do not invalidate a map, because every defensive plan already treats a ground ball in the area as dangerous. Receptions at hip height and above are the signal, because those are the ones your shape has classified as requiring a control.

The third is the position on the pitch. Central receptions inside twelve metres are dangerous for everyone. The diagnostic positions are wide of the six-yard box, at the near angle, and around the penalty spot with the ball moving across the body, because those are the ones a standard shape leaves loose.

The fourth is the outcome distribution rather than the goal count. Count how many of these attempts were on target and how many forced a save rather than a block. Goals are too noisy over three matches; on-target rate from recalibrating positions is not.

If a forward scores on all four markers, your map is wrong against him and the plan in this article applies. If he scores on one or two, he is an ordinary finisher with a highlight reel and your standard shape is correct. Most forwards are the second thing, which is why this plan should be rare.

There is a fifth question, which is about the side rather than the forward: where do the deliveries into those positions originate? Chart the origin of every delivery that produced one of those receptions across the three matches, and a pattern almost always emerges. That pattern tells you which player to press, which lane to occupy, and which of your own players carries the plan. It is far more actionable than anything about the forward himself.

Man-marking: when it was tried and why it usually failed

Sides facing a great forward reach for a dedicated man-marker, and it is worth being specific about why that instinct produced worse results against this profile than against many others.

Man-marking works when a forward’s threat depends on occupying a position that a marker can deny. Against a forward who lives in the six-yard box, a marker who is physically between him and the ball has removed most of the threat, and the cost, one defender removed from the collective structure, is affordable.

Against a forward who drops, drifts wide, combines, and then arrives, a marker is not denying a position; he is following a player around the pitch. There is a second failure specific to this profile. A marker who is tight to a technical finisher at the moment of a delivery is a marker who can be used as a screen, because the finish does not require the forward to be free; it requires him to have the ball on the right side of his body at a strikeable height. A defender pressed against his back is an obstruction the goalkeeper cannot see through and a body the forward can spin off. Tightness helps only when it is combined with the correct shoulder, and a pure man-marking brief tends to produce tightness without side discipline.

The version of man-orientation that did work was situational and partial: engage the drop from behind at contact distance, hand him off when he moves wide, and never follow him beyond the halfway line. That is a zonal structure with man-oriented triggers rather than a man-marking scheme, and it is what almost every competent side does now, which is one of the genuine improvements modern defending has made.

The set-piece dimension

A plan that has been carefully organised in open play and left the dead ball to habit has left a door open in the wall it has just built, and against a technical finisher the dead ball is a particularly bad door.

The reason is that everything the article has said about the defence’s map being wrong applies with more force to a set-piece defensive scheme, which is a much more rigid map. Game management: what changes with the scoreline

The plan is not a constant, and the adjustments that follow from the scoreline are predictable enough to decide in advance.

Leading, the danger increases and the temptation is to drop deeper. Dropping deeper is the wrong response, because the deliveries that feed a technical finisher are clipped balls into the area and dropping deeper puts more bodies in the area while doing nothing about the clip. The correct adjustment when leading is to push the midfield line up and squeeze the space from which the clip is played, accepting more territory conceded in exchange for fewer chosen deliveries. That is uncomfortable and it is right.

Behind, the plan largely dissolves, because a chasing side commits players forward and the forward’s opportunities arrive in transition rather than from settled deliveries. Transition receptions are less controllable for the attacking side, which is a small mercy, and the relevant preparation is rest defence and the recovery angle rather than anything in the table.

Level and late, the decision is who is still capable of the pre-arrival contact job. That job is a concentration job rather than a running job, which means it degrades differently from the corridor-closing job described elsewhere in this cluster: the player does not run out of legs, he runs out of attention, and attention lapses arrive without warning. A coach watching for tired legs will miss it. The reliable marker is the defender starting to arrive at the same moment as the ball rather than before it, which is visible from the touchline if you know to look for it.

The interval message is the one that matters most. A defence that has conceded a finish from a position it deliberately left will want to tighten that position. Tightening it means loosening something else, and unless the coach has decided that the something else is now cheaper, the change makes the side worse. The message should be the diagnostic: were the players where the plan wanted them? If yes, the plan holds and we defend the same concession for another forty-five minutes.

Why this problem is more common now, not less

The article has argued twice that the class of problem described here is more common in modern football than it was, and the argument deserves a full statement rather than an assertion, because it runs against the usual assumption.

Defensive coaching has converged. Thirty years ago the range of defensive approaches in top-level football was genuinely wide: back threes with a spare man, back fours with a dedicated marker, offside-trap sides, deep sides, aggressive man-oriented systems, and zonal ones, coexisting in the same competitions. A forward faced a different map every week, which meant that a technique which invalidated one map was defended competently by the next one.

Modern top-level defending is far more uniform. Most sides defend in a compact block, with a zonal structure, a similar line height, similar distances between lines, and a similar allocation of bodies in the penalty area. That uniformity is the product of the approach genuinely being better, and it is better. It is also a single shared map, which means a technique that exploits it exploits it everywhere.

The practical consequence for a coach is not that he should abandon the modern approach; it is the correct default and the article has said so repeatedly. The consequence is that the modern approach’s shared concessions are known, and any opponent who has a player capable of punishing them should be planned for specifically rather than absorbed into a standard shape. The consequence for a coach developing forwards is the mirror image and is more interesting. If every defence concedes the same positions, the highest-value technical investment for a young forward is the ability to finish from those positions, which are exactly the ones this article has spent its length describing: hip and chest height, wide of the six-yard box, ball moving across the body, first time.
