The rock itself made it possible, since limestone can be cut cleanly and holds a shaft without lining, and the same quality made the hills a quarry.

The survival is good and the shaft can still be descended in part, which makes it one of the few elements of the original works a visitor can experience directly.

The Stone

Where the building material came from is worth a section, since it connects this fortress to the oldest monuments in Egypt and the connection is frequently misdescribed.

The bulk came from the hills themselves. The Muqattam escarpment is limestone, it had been quarried since the pharaonic period, and quarrying on site is enormously cheaper than transporting stone.

How was stone from the pyramids used in the Citadel?

Casing stones stripped from the smaller pyramids and other monuments on the plateau across the river were carried to the site and used in the construction, which is well attested. The bulk of the material came from quarries in the Muqattam hills immediately adjacent, so the pyramid stone was a supplement rather than the principal source.

The pyramid stone is well attested and it needs stating carefully. The smooth casing that once covered the great monuments was cut, dressed limestone of high quality lying in accessible heaps, and taking it required no quarrying at all.

Why did the seat of government move out of the walled city?

The Ottoman Period

The documentation thins in this period compared with the Mamluk centuries, which is a general feature of Ottoman provincial history rather than anything peculiar to this site.

The garrison politics eventually became the whole story, with the corps quartered in the Citadel exercising decisive influence over Egyptian affairs, which sets up the events described in the article’s section on 1811.

The Nineteenth Century Transformation
