When a forward scores from a run across the back of a defense, the replay goes to the same place every time. It shows the pass, it shows the defender nearest the ball, and the commentary settles on whoever was closest to the scene. That defender is almost never the one who lost the goal. Defenders who stopped Andriy Shevchenko understood something the replay does not show, which is that the run he made started ten yards away from the ball, behind a defender who was looking in the wrong direction for entirely reasonable reasons, and that the moment it became unstoppable was a moment in which nothing visible happened at all.
This is an article about the far-shoulder run and about the defensive skill that answers it, which is head movement rather than foot movement. The subject is a Ukrainian forward, effectively two-footed, whose signature threat was the run that began on the shoulder of the far centre-back and finished either across the goalkeeper into the far corner or clipped early into the near one. He made his name at Dynamo Kyiv, produced his most celebrated work at Milan, later played in England for Chelsea, and had a long international career with Ukraine. He could finish first time from a diagonal service and from a straight ball into the channel, with either foot, which removed the one instruction defenders rely on most in the final third. That combination, a run nobody can see and a finish that cannot be steered onto a weaker side, is what makes the duel worth a full article.

The geometry of the blind side
Start with a picture that occurs several hundred times in every match. The ball is in a wide area on the left. The defending side’s back four has shifted across to meet it. The right centre-back, furthest from the ball, is the last piece of the structure, and his job in that moment is to hold the depth of the line and cover the space behind his partner.
Now ask a simple question: what is he looking at?
He is looking inward and slightly forward, because his depth is calibrated against the defender next to him and because the danger he has been trained to anticipate comes from the ball, which is on the far side. His body is angled towards the play. His head is turned towards the play. And directly over his outside shoulder, behind the line of his vision, there is a piece of grass that is both onside and unwatched.
That piece of grass is where the run starts. Not where it finishes, which is in the penalty area in front of a goalkeeper, but where it starts, which is in a position the defender responsible for it cannot see without deliberately choosing to look.
The chain of reference
The reason the blind cone exists is not laziness and it is not poor positioning. It is produced by the way a back four calibrates itself, and understanding that is what makes the problem solvable rather than merely describable.
A defensive line sets its depth through a chain. The defender closest to the ball takes his cue from the ball, because pressure on the ball determines whether a forward pass is available. The next defender takes his cue from him. The third takes his cue from the second. By the time the chain reaches the far side, the last defender is calibrating against a teammate who is himself calibrating against another teammate, and every link adds a fraction of a second of lag and a few degrees of inward orientation.
The far defender is therefore doing exactly what he has been taught. He is holding the line, he is watching his partner, he is oriented towards the danger. And the cumulative effect of the chain is that his attention has been pulled across the pitch, away from the one area for which he alone is responsible.
A forward who understands this does not need to be quick to exploit it. He needs to be patient, to hold a position two or three yards outside the far defender’s field of vision, and to move at the moment the ball is released rather than before it. Everything else is geometry.
Why this run is harder to see than any other
Three features make the far-shoulder run the least visible threat in attacking football.
It begins from a stationary position, which means it produces no movement cue in the defender’s peripheral vision. A runner who is already moving is easier to detect out of the corner of an eye than one who starts from rest, and forwards who specialized in this were often visibly still for long periods before they went.
It travels across the defender rather than towards him. Human peripheral vision is far better at detecting movement approaching the centre of the visual field than movement crossing behind it, and a run that starts behind the shoulder and goes diagonally forward is exploiting the weakest part of the way people see.
And it is timed to a moment when looking away is genuinely dangerous. The far defender cannot simply turn his head whenever he likes, because the ball is on the other side and a moment spent looking away from a delivery is a moment in which the delivery arrives. So the defender’s problem is not that he does not know the run exists. It is that the information is expensive and he has to decide when to buy it.
The blind-side rhythm
Here is the claim this article advances. A far-shoulder run is defeated by a scanning rhythm rather than by a marking decision, which makes it the only major striker threat in the game that is stopped by head movement rather than by foot movement. Call it the blind-side rhythm, and treat it as a technical skill with a tempo rather than as an instruction to concentrate.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Almost every defensive answer in this series involves a decision about where to put a body: how tight to be, when to step, whom to pass a runner on to, which side to show. This one does not. The far centre-back’s feet are, in most cases, already in the right place. What is wrong is where his eyes are, and the correction is a pattern of looking that has to be as automatic as a footballer’s first touch.
The reason it has to be automatic is that it cannot be decided in the moment. A defender who thinks “I should check my shoulder” has already spent the half-second in which checking would have been useful. The scan has to run on a rhythm that is set by something external and reliable, and the only reliable external clock in a defensive phase is the ball carrier’s touches.
Why concentration is the wrong frame
Coaches faced with this problem almost always reach for the language of focus. Stay switched on. Do not ball-watch. Concentrate for ninety minutes. Those instructions have been shouted at defenders for as long as the game has existed and they have never once fixed the problem, for a straightforward reason: the defender is already concentrating. He is watching the ball intently because the ball is where he has been told the danger is, and telling a man to concentrate harder on a scene that does not contain the threat does nothing at all.
The useful reframing is that this is an information problem rather than an attention problem. The defender needs a specific piece of data, which is the position of a forward he cannot see, and he needs it refreshed often enough that it never goes stale. Frame it that way and the solution becomes obvious and teachable: define when the data is collected, define how it is collected, and rehearse it until it survives a crowded penalty area.
What a scan actually is
A scan is a head rotation of maybe thirty to forty degrees, held for a fraction of a second, taken with the eyes leading and the shoulders unchanged. It is not a look over the shoulder in the sense of turning to face backwards, which takes too long and costs the defender his orientation to the ball entirely.

That separation is a learned skill, it is completely safe to train, and it is the physical foundation of everything in this article. A defender who cannot look without turning his body will never execute a scanning rhythm, because every scan will cost him his position and he will quickly and correctly stop doing it.
What the scan collects is not detailed. The defender is not reading the forward’s body shape or trying to predict his movement. He is answering one question, which is whether the forward is still where he was, and the answer takes almost no time to obtain. It is a position check, repeated, and its value comes entirely from the repetition rather than from the quality of any individual look.
The rhythm, in one sentence
Tie the scan to the ball carrier’s touches: check on the touch that controls, check again on the touch that sets, and never check on the touch that releases. That sequence gives the defender two updates per possession in the wide area, spaced by roughly a second, delivered at moments when the ball cannot arrive, and it costs him nothing at the moment it matters. The rest of this article is about the details of that rule, the line-setting convention that has to accompany it, and what to do when the sequence is compressed.
The scanning protocol: tying the head to the ball carrier’s touches
A rhythm needs a metronome, and the metronome available to every defender on every pitch in the world is what the player in possession is doing with his feet. Touches are visible from anywhere, they arrive at a predictable tempo, and they map directly onto danger, which makes them a far better clock than time or intuition.
When exactly should a centre-back scan?
On the controlling touch and on the setting touch, never on the releasing touch. A player who has just received cannot deliver for at least another beat, and a player adjusting his feet is committed to that adjustment. The moment his head comes up and his standing foot plants, the scan is over and the eyes belong to the ball.
That is the protocol in its shortest form. Working through why each element is placed where it is makes it much easier to install, because a defender who understands the logic will apply it correctly in situations the rule did not anticipate.
The controlling touch
When a wide player receives a pass, his first touch is almost always occupied with the ball itself: killing it, moving it out of his feet, or shifting it away from a defender. During that touch he cannot deliver, and everyone in the penalty area knows it, which is why the defensive line’s attention naturally relaxes by a fraction at exactly this moment.
That relaxation should be spent rather than wasted. The far centre-back’s first scan goes here, and it is the cheapest look he will get in the entire sequence. If the forward has already begun to move, the defender has found out about it at the earliest possible moment and with the largest possible margin.
The setting touch
The second touch, the one where the wide player adjusts his body to deliver, is the last safe window and it is a narrower one. He is now capable of releasing quickly, so the scan must be shorter, and the defender’s eyes must return to the ball before the standing foot plants.
This scan is the important one, because it is the one that catches a forward who has timed his movement well. A well-timed far-shoulder run starts as the crosser sets himself, precisely because that is the moment the defenders in the box turn to face the delivery. A defender who scans on the setting touch is looking at the forward at the exact instant the forward begins to move, which converts an invisible run into an obvious one.
The releasing touch
No scan, under any circumstances. The ball is about to travel, the defender’s job is to read its flight and attack its arrival point, and a head turned away from a delivery in the final third is a goal waiting to happen from an entirely different mechanism.
This is worth stating firmly because defenders who have been coached to scan sometimes over-apply it, and a defender scanning as a cross comes in is worse off than one who never scanned at all. The protocol is a rhythm with a hard stop, and the stop is as important as the looks.
When the sequence is compressed
First-time deliveries break the protocol, because there is no controlling touch and no setting touch. The ball arrives in a wide area and leaves immediately, which gives the far defender no safe window at all.
The answer in that case is not to scan faster; it is to move the scan earlier in the sequence, to the moment before the pass into the wide area is played. A defender who checks his shoulder while the ball is still travelling towards the wide player has bought his information before the compressed sequence begins. This requires reading one pass ahead, which is a genuine skill and which separates defenders who cope with sharp attacking football from those who are constantly reacting to it.
The corollary is a preparation point. Against a side that delivers first time from wide areas, the scanning rhythm has to be moved a full pass earlier across the whole defense, and that is an instruction a coach gives in the video meeting rather than something a defender works out during the match.
The far defender’s second job while scanning
There is one refinement that experienced defenders add without being taught, and it is worth naming because it doubles the value of every scan. While the head is turned, the defender should be checking not only where the forward is but which way his hips are pointing.
A forward standing square is waiting. A forward whose hips have opened towards the space behind the line is about to go, and he has to open them before he goes because a run cannot start from a closed body position. That is a half-second of warning available for free, collected during a look the defender was taking anyway, and it converts the scan from a position check into a prediction.
The far-shoulder scanning protocol

Three rows deserve comment because they carry most of the argument.
The line-setting column is the same answer almost the whole way down, and that is deliberate rather than lazy. Against this specific threat the far defender owns the line, which inverts the usual convention and is the subject of the next section. The exceptions are transition, where no line exists, and central possession with no wide threat, where the reference reverts to normal because the blind cone is not being occupied.
The first-time delivery row is the one most sides get wrong, and it is where the best attacking teams score their blind-side goals. A defense whose scanning rhythm is tied to a two-touch sequence has no rhythm at all against a side that delivers first time, and the correction has to be made before the match rather than during it.
The goalkeeper’s column is not decoration. A keeper’s depth against a blind-side runner is a live variable rather than a fixed position, and the reason is that the run finishes in a different place from most attacking movements. That gets its own section shortly, because it is the piece most often missing entirely.
Reading the start: the cues that precede a far-shoulder run
A scan is only worth what the defender can read during it, and the difference between a defender who checks his shoulder and a defender who benefits from checking his shoulder is knowing what to look for. The scan takes a fraction of a second, so the cues have to be things that can be absorbed in a glance rather than assessed.
Five of them carry real signal, and they are listed here in the order a defender is likely to notice them.
The hips
The most reliable cue and the one worth training above all others. A run cannot begin from a closed body position, so a forward who intends to attack the space behind must open his hips towards it before he goes. That rotation happens a beat before the first step and it is large enough to register in a glance.
The practical version of the instruction is simple: square hips mean waiting, open hips mean going. A defender who scans twice per possession and reads hips both times has bought himself roughly half a second of warning on a run he would otherwise have detected only after it started, and half a second is the entire margin in this duel.
The stillness
Counterintuitive and genuinely useful. Most forwards adjust constantly, shuffling, checking, drifting a yard here and there, and that low-level movement is normal background noise. A forward who becomes completely still while the ball is being worked into a wide area is usually not disengaged; he is set.
Stillness is what makes the run invisible in peripheral vision, and it is also what makes it detectable to a defender who takes an actual look. The forwards who specialized in this were often described as quiet for long periods, which is an accurate description of a player who is deliberately generating no cues.
The depth relative to the last defender
Where the forward stands relative to the deepest defender tells a defender what kind of run is being prepared. A forward level with the last man is preparing to move on the ball carrier’s release and is likely to be caught if the line steps. A forward half a yard behind the last man, which is to say marginally deeper and still onside, is preparing to start from a position that gives him a running start into the space rather than a standing start.
That half yard is not carelessness. It is the difference between arriving at a through ball in stride and arriving at it having to accelerate, and a defender who sees a forward take that half yard is watching a run being loaded.
The glance at the ball carrier
Forwards scan too, and the pattern is readable. A forward preparing a timed run will take a short look at the ball carrier and then look forward at the space, and the second look is the tell. He is checking the geography of the finish rather than the position of the ball, which means the decision has been made and only the timing remains.
This cue is harder to catch than the hips and it appears earlier, which makes it valuable in the first scan of a sequence when there is time to use it.
The false step
The last cue and the one that punishes a defender who reads only the first movement. A well-prepared forward will often take a small step towards the ball or towards the middle before going the other way, because a defender who has just checked and seen movement in one direction will settle.
The answer is not to ignore first movements but to weight them against the hips, which do not lie in the same way feet do. A step inward with hips already open towards the space behind is a decoy. A step inward with square hips is a genuine adjustment. That single comparison resolves most of the disguise in this duel, and it takes no longer to read than either cue alone.
What to do with the information
None of these cues requires a defender to do anything dramatic. The output of a successful read is small: a yard of adjustment in starting position, a shift of weight onto the outside foot, or simply a decision not to commit to the ball’s arrival point. The value is not in a spectacular intervention but in never being surprised, and a defender who is never surprised by a blind-side run has removed the entire threat without making a single visible defensive action all afternoon.
Who sets the line, and why the usual convention is backwards
The scanning protocol solves the information problem. It does not solve the structural one, and the structural one is arguably larger: even a defender who sees the run cannot stop it if his line is being set by somebody else.
The standard convention across most of football is that the defender nearest the ball sets the line. The logic is sound in general. He can see whether the ball carrier is under pressure, he knows whether a forward pass is available, and he is best placed to judge when the line can safely step. Everybody else calibrates off him.
Against a far-shoulder run, that convention produces a specific and repeatable failure, and it is worth following through in slow motion.
The near defender sees the ball carrier under pressure and steps. The next defender sees him step and follows, half a beat later. The third follows the second. The far defender, at the end of the chain, is now two beats behind the original decision, and during those two beats he has been holding a deeper position than his teammates. A forward standing off his outside shoulder has therefore been kept onside by the one defender who could not see him, and when the line finally arrives at its new depth the forward is already moving through it.
The wave is the mechanism. A back four that steps in sequence rather than together is not a line at all, it is a diagonal, and a diagonal always has a deepest point. The deepest point is on the far side, and the deepest point is exactly where the run starts.
Which defender should set the offside line?
Against a blind-side runner, the far centre-back, not the defender nearest the ball. He is the only player who can see the runner, he owns the deepest point of the line, and a line calibrated off him arrives at its depth together. The near defender adjusts inward off him, which is an easy adjustment because the ball is in front of him.
Inverting the convention feels wrong to most coaches on first hearing, and the objection is a fair one: the far defender cannot see the ball as well, so how can he judge when a step is safe?
The answer is that he does not have to. The step decision and the depth reference are two different jobs and they can be split. The pressing information, meaning whether the ball carrier is under enough pressure that a forward pass is unlikely, is called by the nearest defender or by the midfielder pressing, and it is a call rather than a movement. The depth itself, meaning where the line actually stands, is owned by the far defender, who moves first and whom everybody else matches.
So the sequence becomes: the near side calls that the step is available, and the far side executes it. The call travels faster than a body, which removes the lag, and the line arrives flat because the player at the deepest point started the movement rather than finishing it.
What this looks like when it works
A defense that has installed this looks slightly odd to a spectator, because the far centre-back appears to be leading a line while looking at nothing in particular. What he is actually doing is holding the deepest point at a depth he has chosen, refreshed by scans on the defined touches, and stepping on a call rather than on what he sees.
The effect on the forward is immediate and it is the reason the whole arrangement is worth the trouble. A far-shoulder run depends on the runner being able to hold a position that is onside without being watched. If the far defender owns the line, the runner’s onside position is being set by the man looking at him, and there is no longer a gap between the depth of the line and the attention of the player who determines it. The blind cone has not been eliminated, because it cannot be. It has been made unprofitable, because a run out of it now arrives at a defender who chose where to stand.
The exception worth naming
None of this applies during transition, and applying it there causes harm. A defense recovering after a turnover has no line to set and no chain to invert, and the far defender who tries to organize a depth reference while sprinting backwards is doing a job that does not exist. The transition rules are different and they appear later in this article, because they are genuinely a separate problem rather than a degraded version of this one.
The goalkeeper’s depth against a blind-side runner
Most goalkeeping instruction about depth is built around two situations: the ball in behind, where the keeper comes to sweep, and the cross, where he holds his line and defends his goal. A far-shoulder run sits awkwardly between them and produces a third requirement that many keepers have never had defined for them.
The run finishes in a specific place. A forward arriving from the far shoulder, running diagonally across the face of the defense, meets the ball somewhere between the penalty spot and the near edge of the six-yard box, moving across the goal rather than towards it. That is neither a through ball to be swept nor a cross to be claimed. It is a runner arriving at speed inside the box with a finish available immediately, and it is the single hardest picture a goalkeeper is asked to deal with in open play.
The three finishes and what they demand
The reason the depth question is hard is that the same run produces three different finishes, and the optimal starting position for each is different.
The first is the finish across the keeper into the far corner, which is the classic answer for a forward arriving from an angle and the one most commonly coached to strikers. It rewards a keeper who has taken a position slightly forward and towards the near side, narrowing the angle and forcing the finisher to beat him across his body over a longer distance.
The second is the early strike into the near corner, clipped before the keeper has set. This is the finish that punishes the forward-and-narrow position, because the space it attacks is the one the keeper has just moved away from. Forwards who could do both, and this subject could, remove the keeper’s ability to guess.
The third is the touch around the keeper, which becomes available if the keeper commits early or comes off his line to close the angle. It is the least common and the most punishing, and it is the reason the instruction here is not simply to advance.
The rule that works
The keeper’s depth is a decision taken before the delivery, based on where the run started rather than on where the ball is.
That is the whole instruction and it depends entirely on information the keeper has to have collected earlier. A keeper who has seen the forward set himself on the far shoulder knows a diagonal arrival is coming and can take a position a yard forward with his weight distributed for a lateral rather than a forward movement, which is the posture that keeps both corners available. A keeper who has not seen it will be reading the runner and the ball simultaneously as they converge, which is a problem with no good solution.
So the keeper’s most valuable work against this profile happens in the same window as the defender’s, and it is the same work: a scan of the far side of his own penalty area while the ball is being controlled in a wide position. His view is better than any defender’s, he is under no immediate pressure, and the information is free.
The call, which is the keeper’s largest contribution
Because the keeper can see the blind cone that the far defender cannot, his voice is worth more here than his hands. A single early call naming the runner on the far shoulder gives the far centre-back the information the scanning protocol is designed to collect, at a moment when the defender may not have a safe window to collect it himself.
The call has to be early, short and specific to a side rather than to a player, because names get lost in a crowd and sides do not. “Runner right” arrives faster than a name and means the same thing. A keeper who supplies that call two or three times in a half will prevent more goals than one who makes two excellent saves, and nobody watching will ever know.
What the keeper should not do
He should not narrow aggressively as the delivery is struck, because narrowing commits him to the far-corner finish and opens the near one. He should not advance to meet a diagonal runner, because the runner is moving across him and advancing reduces his lateral coverage without shortening the distance meaningfully. And he should not adjust his feet at the moment of the strike, which against a forward capable of finishing first time from either foot is the difference between a save and a goal that looks unstoppable on replay.
The two-footed problem: when there is no weaker side to show
Almost every instruction a defender receives in the final third contains a hidden assumption, and once you notice it you cannot stop noticing it. Show him outside. Force him onto his left. Deny the cut inside. Send him down the line. Every one of those assumes the forward has a preference, and the entire vocabulary of individual defending is built on exploiting the difference between a player’s two feet.
A genuinely two-footed finisher removes that vocabulary, and the effect is larger than most analysis allows for. It is not that he is slightly better than a one-footed forward. It is that a specific and heavily used defensive tool stops working entirely, and defenders trained on that tool are left holding an instruction with no content.
What changes for the defender
Three things, in increasing order of difficulty.
The covering angle becomes symmetric, which is more expensive. A defender covering a right-footed forward can afford to be a step towards the forward’s right, because the finish he is most worried about comes from that side and the other option is worse for the attacker. Against a two-footed finisher there is no cheaper side, so the covering position has to sit square, which means it is further from both options rather than close to one.
The delay tactic loses value. A common and sound way to handle a forward arriving in the box is to delay him until he is forced onto his weaker foot or into a narrower angle. Against this profile, delay produces a smaller angle but not a worse foot, and a smaller angle for a finisher who strikes cleanly with either side is a much smaller gain than the defender expects.
And the goalkeeper cannot pre-load. A keeper facing a strongly one-footed forward can weight his position and his readiness towards the likely finish without any real cost. Against a forward who is comfortable both ways, that weighting becomes a guess with a genuine downside, so the keeper has to stay square and defend both corners, which reduces his effective reach on either.
What replaces the missing instruction
If a defender cannot direct the finish, he has to prevent the reception, and that is the whole substitution. Against a two-footed finisher the defensive value moves earlier in the sequence, out of the box and into the pass that gets him there.
Practically, this means three shifts of emphasis. The scanning protocol becomes more important rather than less, because the run itself is now the last controllable moment. The pressure on the passer becomes a primary rather than a supporting concern, since a delivery that is even slightly wrong removes the first-time finish. And the covering defender’s job changes from angling to intercepting: his objective is to reach the line the ball is travelling on, not to shepherd the forward into a preferred position, because there is no preferred position to shepherd him into.
The wider point about defensive vocabulary
This is worth generalizing because it is one of the more useful observations in the cluster. A large share of individual defending is asymmetry management, and it works because most players are meaningfully asymmetric. When a forward is not, the defender has to fall back on the two tools that never depended on asymmetry: denying the reception, and outnumbering the duel.
That is the same conclusion the series reaches for other forwards whose threats could not be steered, and it is a reminder that the standard coaching syllabus was built around the common case rather than the difficult one. A defender who has only ever been taught to show a forward one way has been given a tool with a precondition, and nobody told him the precondition existed.
The honest qualifier
Two-footedness is often overstated as a category, and the debate section returns to this. Very few forwards are genuinely equal with both feet; most are strong with one and competent with the other, which is a real advantage and a smaller one than it is usually described as. The defensive question is not whether a forward can use both feet but whether he can finish first time with both under pressure, which is a much narrower and rarer quality. Where it exists, the effects above apply in full. Where it does not, the standard asymmetry tools still work and should still be used, and a defense that abandons them because a forward is described as two-footed has given away an advantage it still had.
The channel version: the space between full-back and centre-back
The far-shoulder run has a sibling that starts from the same principle and attacks a different seam, and a defense that has solved one and not the other has solved neither.
The channel run begins in the gap between the far full-back and the far centre-back rather than directly off the centre-back’s outside shoulder. It exploits the same blind cone and adds a second problem: the two defenders either side of that gap have different references. The full-back is usually watching a winger or the ball, the centre-back is watching his partner and the line, and the space between them belongs to a shared responsibility that neither has been given explicitly.
The run is also easier for the forward, which is worth stating plainly. Starting from the channel means he does not have to hold a position on a defender’s shoulder, so he is harder to spot even when somebody does look, and the finishing angle he arrives at is closer to central than the angle from a pure far-shoulder run.
The defensive answer
Two rules, and they have to be given together because either alone makes things worse.
The first is that the channel belongs to the centre-back, not the full-back. This is counterintuitive because the full-back is often closer to it, and it is correct because a full-back who tucks in to cover the channel opens the widest space on the pitch behind him, and because the centre-back is already responsible for the depth of the line in that area. The full-back holds his width and his depth, the centre-back covers the seam, and the covering midfielder deals with the consequences if the ball goes wide instead.
The second is that the channel is defended by depth rather than by position. A centre-back cannot stand in the channel, because standing in it removes him from the middle. What he can do is hold a depth that makes a ball into the channel arrive behind him rather than in front of him, which turns a run into a race he starts on the goal side. Defending the run in transition
Everything above assumes a set defensive structure with a line, a chain of reference and touches to scan against. In transition none of that exists, and a defense that tries to apply the protocol in an unstructured moment will produce a back four with four players looking over their shoulders and nobody organizing anything.
Transition is where a blind-side runner is most dangerous, for a reason that is entirely mechanical. Recovering defenders are running towards their own goal with their eyes forward, which means every one of them has a blind cone rather than just the far one, and the forward can choose which of four to occupy. The third is the goalkeeper’s, and it changes in transition. His depth decision cannot be based on where the run started, because he did not see it start, so he reverts to the safer default: hold the line of the six-yard box, stay big, and do not commit forward against a runner who is arriving across him rather than at him.
What the run demands of the passer, and what that gives the defense
Every run into space is one half of a partnership, and the far-shoulder run is unusually demanding of its other half. Understanding what the pass has to be is one of the most useful things a defense can know, because it converts a question about an unstoppable movement into a question about a difficult delivery, and difficult deliveries can be made harder.
Three qualities are required and all three are hard.
Timing to the start rather than to the run

Disguise
The best deliveries are struck without a preparatory look, because a passer who telegraphs the pass gives the far defender the same warning the forward’s hips give. What the defense does with this
Three concrete consequences, and they are the practical payoff of the whole section.
Press the passer rather than the ball. The run that is never found, and why it still pays
A scouting error that recurs constantly with runners of this type is counting the runs that received the ball and treating the rest as wasted effort. Most far-shoulder runs are not found. That is not a failure rate; it is the mechanism working, and a defense that does not understand this will systematically underestimate the profile.
Three things happen every time the run is made, whether or not the pass arrives.
The line cannot step
A defensive line squeezes forward to compress the space in front of it, and the squeeze is one of the most valuable collective actions in defending: it shortens the pitch, it pushes the opposition backwards, and it makes the midfield press viable. A line can only step when nobody is threatening the space behind it at that moment.
A forward who is standing on the far shoulder, hips open, visibly ready, removes the step. So a run that is never found still taxes the defense, and a forward who makes the run twenty times has taxed it twenty times. Which defender is at fault for a blind-side goal?

The defender who simply plays a lower line and refuses to be exposed behind. He handles the far-shoulder run by removing the space it attacks, which is a legitimate answer and comes with an equally legitimate bill.
His bet is that a forward whose primary threat is a diagonal run into space behind the line is neutralized by having no space behind the line. That bet is correct. What it concedes is territory, a compressed defensive third, more deliveries into the box, and a forward who now receives to feet in front of a deep block with the whole defense in view. Whether the trade is good depends on the rest of the opposition, and against a side with genuine creativity in front of the striker it is often a poor one.
The aggressive front-foot defender
The defender who steps and squeezes, aiming to make the space behind irrelevant by removing the time to play into it. Back four or back three: which system defends the blind side better

A back three changes the problem in ways that are worth setting out, because the answer is genuinely mixed rather than a straightforward improvement.
What a back three fixes
The central advantage is that a back three contains a defender whose primary responsibility is the picture rather than a man or a ball. In a well-organized three, the middle defender is not oriented to the play in the way a far centre-back in a four is; his job is depth, cover and vision, and he is the one player in the structure who can watch the space behind his colleagues as a full-time task rather than as an occasional scan.
That is close to a direct answer to the problem this article describes. If one defender is permanently watching the blind side, the blind side is not blind. The far-shoulder run loses its unobserved start, and the run becomes a footrace against a covering defender who saw it begin, which is a much worse proposition for the forward.

The second is the wing-back’s position, which is the structural cost of the system. A wing-back pushed high is not available to close the channel, and the wide centre-back who has to cover it is being pulled away from the middle. Against a forward who can attack either the outside shoulder of the wide defender or the seam inside him, the wide centre-back is being asked to defend two spaces with one body and to do it further from his covering colleague than a full-back would be.
The verdict, and how to choose
The system that defends the blind side better is the one that matches the forward’s habitual starting position, and that is a scouting question rather than a philosophical one.
Against a forward who starts on the outside shoulder of the last central defender and runs diagonally inward, the back three is clearly better, because the spare man is positioned exactly where that run finishes and is watching it start. Against a forward who starts wider, in the channel outside the last central defender, the back four is usually better, because a full-back holding width and depth is a body in the area the run attacks and a high wing-back is not.
The practical instruction for a coach is therefore to identify the starting position rather than the run, since the run is the same in both cases and the starting position determines which structure has a defender near it. That identification takes one match of video and is the highest-value fifteen minutes of preparation available against this profile.
The hybrid that most sides actually use
Worth naming because it is what happens in practice regardless of what the team sheet says. Many sides defending against a depth runner drop a midfielder into the back line in possession phases and revert to a four out of possession, or push a full-back high and use the near centre-back as a de facto wide defender.
Those hybrids inherit the problems of both systems unless somebody has explicitly assigned the blind-side scan. A back four with a full-back high is a back three without a designated spare man, which is the worst arrangement available against this run: large zones, a wave in the line, and nobody whose job is the picture. The far defender orienting to his partner
The root failure. A defender whose reference is the man next to him rather than his own depth has both his eyes and his position determined by somebody who cannot see the threat. The cause is the standard chain of reference, which is taught everywhere and works fine against every attacking pattern except this one. The fix is the line-setting inversion, and it has to be installed as a rule rather than suggested as a preference, because under pressure players revert to what they were taught first.
The line set by the near side
The second, and the one that keeps the runner onside. It produces the wave, the wave produces a deepest point, and the deepest point is on the far side. The signal from the bench is visible without any technology: watch whether the back four arrives at a new depth together or in sequence. Scanning at the wrong moment

The fourth. Both centre-backs attacking the ball
The fifth, and it produces the most spectacular version of the goal. A delivery comes in, both centre-backs commit to the arrival point, and the runner arriving from the blind side meets the ball behind them with nobody between him and the goalkeeper. The cause is a missing call and a shared assumption that the ball is the only thing worth defending. The rule that prevents it is that the far defender never attacks a delivery he has not scanned for, because a defender who does not know whether there is a runner behind him is not entitled to commit.
The midfield chasing the ball instead of the passer
The sixth is not a defensive-line failure at all and it is where the largest available improvement usually sits. The far-shoulder run requires a specific delivery: an early, precise ball into the space behind the line, played by a passer with his head up. Remove the passer’s time and the run has nowhere to arrive.
The mistake is a midfield that presses the ball as a general habit rather than pressing the specific player who can execute this pass at the specific moment he can execute it. The conditions a far-shoulder run needs are produced most reliably not by the attacking side but by the defending side’s own decisions, and almost all of those decisions are driven by the scoreboard and the clock.
The chasing side hands over everything
A team that needs a goal pushes its full-backs high, commits midfielders forward, and holds a higher defensive line to keep the pressure sustained. Every one of those adjustments enlarges the space behind, reduces the number of bodies available to recover, and increases the frequency of transitions in which no defensive structure exists.

Scanning is a habit maintained by attention, and attention degrades faster than the physical capacity to run. A defender in the closing stages will still sprint but will scan less often, which means the information stops arriving before the ability to act on it does.
That produces a specific and predictable pattern of late goals from blind-side runs, and it has a specific answer. The scanning rhythm should be reinforced verbally as a match progresses, by the goalkeeper and by the captain in the back four, precisely because the players who need it will not self-correct. A defense that talks more in the last twenty minutes than in the first twenty has understood something about how this fails.
Substitutions and the seam they create
The third effect concerns a replacement defender entering a match, which is a common trigger for this goal. A substitute arriving into a back four has not been part of the sequence of small agreements the line has built during the match, does not know the current line-setting convention has been inverted, and reverts to the habits he was taught.
The fix is administrative rather than tactical: whoever is responsible for briefing substitutes should give a defender entering the match one instruction rather than five, and against this profile that instruction is about who owns the depth. What this plan costs
Four concessions, and a defense should agree to them in advance.
It costs attention that was being spent elsewhere. A far centre-back running a scanning rhythm is a defender who is not watching the ball continuously, and there will be moments when a delivery surprises him because his eyes were away. That is the trade, and it is worth taking because the deliveries he misses by a fraction are recoverable and the runs he misses entirely are not.
It costs the aggressive step. A line whose depth is owned by the far defender steps a beat later than one that steps on the nearest defender’s judgment, because a call has to travel before a body moves. Against a side that plays quickly through midfield, that beat is a real reduction in how high the defense can hold, and a coach who wants both maximum compression and blind-side security is asking for something the geometry does not offer.
It costs the goalkeeper some of his sweeping. A keeper whose depth is set by the run rather than by the ball will occasionally be a yard deeper than he would like when a straight ball goes in behind, because he has prepared for a diagonal arrival instead. That is a genuine loss and it is smaller than the alternative, since a keeper caught wrong against a diagonal runner has no save available at all.
It costs the defender’s own reputation, which sounds trivial and is not. A far centre-back who runs the protocol correctly produces no visible defensive actions, wins no headers he was not going to win anyway, and appears on any conventional review to have had a quiet afternoon. The work that prevented three goals is invisible by construction. Unless a coaching staff has decided in advance to value it, the player doing it will be judged below a teammate who made two recovery tackles after failing to scan, and the selection pressure will run against the behavior the plan depends on.
It costs a midfielder’s freedom.
