A centre-back can tell you exactly what to do about a striker who runs in behind, and exactly what to do about a striker who drops into the pocket. Ask him what to do about a striker who walks sideways and you will usually get a shrug, because the movement does not look like a threat. Nobody is sprinting. Nothing is being attacked. A forward is simply strolling across the face of a back four, twelve yards in front of it, apparently going nowhere. The diagonal plane is the run from wide to central, or central to wide, at an angle. The forward starts on one defender’s shoulder and finishes on another’s, and the marking responsibility changes hands during the run rather than before or after it. That produces a timing problem rather than a positional one, because both defenders are correct at different moments and the danger lives in the handover. The horizontal plane is the drift, and it is the odd one out. In the vertical and diagonal planes the forward is going somewhere, and the defense is trying to arrive at the destination first. In the horizontal plane the forward is not going anywhere at all. He is travelling parallel to the line he intends to attack, at a distance that keeps him onside and visible, and the movement generates no separation whatsoever while it is happening. The turned-shoulder cost
Here is the claim this article advances and the one to carry away. Every yard a defender tracks laterally costs him vision of the ball. The objective against a drifting forward is therefore to pass him across the line rather than to follow him, and the coachable cue is the shoulder rather than the feet. Call it the turned-shoulder cost, and use the name, because everything that follows is a way of avoiding paying it.
The mechanism is geometric and it is worth setting out slowly, because most defenders have never had it explained and are therefore unable to correct a habit they do not know they have.
A defender marking a forward in front of him needs two pieces of information at all times: where the ball is and where the man is. He has one pair of eyes and roughly a hundred and eighty degrees of useful vision, and the two objects are usually in different places. The standard solution is body orientation. He sets his hips and shoulders on an angle that puts the ball in one edge of his field and the man in the other, which means his default posture is a compromise, and the quality of the compromise is the quality of the defender.
Now move the man. As the forward drifts across the defender’s body, the angle between ball and man widens. At some point it exceeds what the defender’s orientation can hold, and he has exactly two options.
He can shuffle sideways while keeping his shoulders on the original angle. This preserves his vision completely and costs him speed and territory, because a defender moving sideways with open hips is slow, and because he is now leaving the zone he was responsible for. He has kept his eyes and given up his position.
Or he can turn his shoulders to follow. This is fast, it is comfortable, it is what the body wants to do, and it costs him the ball. For the duration of the turn and for as long as he holds the new orientation, the ball is behind him or at the far edge of his vision, and he is tracking a man while the game happens somewhere he cannot see. He has kept his position, sort of, and given up his eyes.
There is no third option and there is no way to avoid the trade. That is what makes it a cost rather than a mistake. A defender who tracks a lateral drift pays in vision or in territory, every time, and a forward who drifts twenty times in a half has collected twenty of those payments before anyone has passed him the ball.
Why the half-second matters more than it sounds
The obvious objection is that a shoulder turn takes a fraction of a second and football is not usually decided in fractions of a second. That objection is wrong twice.
It is wrong because the fraction is not random. A drifting forward controls when he moves, which means he controls when the defender’s head turns, which means the attacking side knows in advance the moment at which a specific defender cannot see the ball. That is not a coincidence to be exploited opportunistically; it is a scheduled blind spot, and a side that plays through a lateral drifter learns to deliver into it. The pass that arrives while a centre-back’s shoulders are square to the touchline is a pass that arrives at a defender who has to reacquire the ball, judge its flight, and reorganize his feet before he can do anything about it.
And it is wrong because the cost compounds. A defender who has turned his shoulders is not just briefly blind, he is now oriented incorrectly for everything that follows. His first step will be a recovery step. His body is set to move laterally when the next requirement is almost always to move forward or back. The instruction that follows
If the cost is unavoidable when you track, then the answer is not to track. The forward is passed from one defender to the next as he crosses the line, each defender holding his own zone and his own orientation, and nobody turning his shoulders to follow a man out of his area.
That instruction is easy to say and it fails constantly in practice, for a reason that has nothing to do with understanding. It fails because a pass-off requires two players to agree, in real time, without a rehearsal, at speed, while one of them cannot see properly. The double-occupancy problem: what the drift is actually for
The turned-shoulder cost is what the drift does to an individual defender. The double-occupancy problem is what it does to the back four, and it is the larger of the two effects.
Follow a tracked drift through to its conclusion. The left centre-back picks up the forward and stays with him as he travels right. Ten yards later, the forward is standing in front of the right centre-back and so is the left centre-back. Two defenders, one man, one piece of grass. The right centre-back, who has done nothing wrong, is now redundant, and the space the left centre-back vacated is occupied by nobody.
That space is the point of the exercise. It is not a byproduct. A forward drifting laterally is not primarily trying to lose his marker; if he wanted to lose a marker he would run, because running is faster and creates real separation. He is trying to move a defender out of a zone so that somebody else can arrive in it, and the somebody else is usually a midfield runner, a winger cutting inside, or a second forward attacking the vacated shoulder.
Notice what this means for how the movement should be scouted. A defense watching video of this profile and counting the times he receives the ball after a drift will conclude that the movement is not very productive, because most drifts end with the ball going elsewhere. That conclusion is exactly backwards. The drifts that end with the ball going elsewhere are the successful ones. The forward has done his job, which was to move a defender, and the goal is scored by a player who is not him.
Why the double occupancy is worse than a simple gap
A defense might reasonably ask what the difference is between this and any other way of creating a gap. A striker who drops deep also drags a defender and opens space. A winger who runs at a full-back also pulls a defender towards the touchline.
The difference is that those movements pull a defender towards the ball, and this one pulls him across the ball. When a centre-back steps forward onto a dropping striker, the defense sees it, the covering rules exist, and everybody knows what to do because it is drilled everywhere. When a centre-back tracks a lateral drift, he is moving parallel to his own line, which sets off none of the alarms a vertical movement sets off. His partner does not read it as a step that needs covering. The full-backs do not read it as a line breaking. The holding midfielder does not read it as a moment to drop in. The whole structure has a rehearsed response to a defender stepping out of the line and no rehearsed response at all to a defender sliding along it.
The second difference is what happens to the line’s spacing. A back four that tracks a drift compresses on one side and stretches on the other, and it does so gradually, which means nobody notices the moment it becomes a problem. Two centre-backs five yards apart with the full-backs at proper distances is a functioning defensive line. How to see it in real time
The observable marker, and this is the thing to give an analyst or an assistant on the touchline, is the distance between the two centre-backs. It should be roughly constant through a defensive phase. When it shrinks, somebody has tracked, and the far side is open regardless of where the ball currently is.
That single measurement is the most useful live diagnostic available against this profile, because it is visible from the bench without any technology, it updates continuously, and it tells you the problem is happening before the ball punishes it. A coach who watches the gap between his centre-backs rather than watching the ball will spot the pattern within ten minutes and can fix it with one instruction at the next break in play. The pass-off: where the handover happens and who calls it
A zonal pass-off across the back line is not a vague principle about staying in your area. It is a specific mechanical procedure with a location, a trigger, a caller and a completion signal, and defenses that execute it well have all four defined. Defenses that execute it badly usually have the principle and none of the machinery.
What is the handover line and where should it sit?
The handover line is the vertical line on the pitch where responsibility for a drifting forward changes hands. It should sit at the near edge of the receiving defender’s zone, not at the midpoint between the two defenders, so the receiving defender takes the forward while still in front of him rather than alongside him.
That placement is the part most sides get wrong, and the reason is intuition. It feels fair to split the difference and hand over halfway. Splitting the difference means the forward arrives at the new defender level with his shoulder, which is the one position from which a forward can attack either side of a defender who has not yet established an angle. Setting the handover early, at the near edge of the receiving zone, means the receiving defender picks the forward up while the forward is still travelling towards him and is therefore predictable, and it means the releasing defender stops tracking sooner and pays less of the turned-shoulder cost.
The practical version of the instruction is that the receiving defender takes the forward when the forward crosses in front of his inside shoulder, not when the forward arrives at his body. If it feels early, it is correct.
Which defender makes the call?
The receiving defender, always. He has the picture: the forward is travelling towards him, in his field of vision, with the ball also in front of him. The releasing defender is the one whose orientation is compromised and whose view is being taken away, so he is the last person who should decide when the responsibility ends.
This is the single most important organizational point in the whole duel and it inverts the natural instinct, which is for the defender currently marking to shout that he is passing the man on. A defender who calls his own release is calling it at the moment he is least able to see, and he is calling it after he has already begun to turn, which means the handover happens late and the cost has already been paid. The call has to come from the man who is about to receive the responsibility, it has to come early, and it has to be a single word.
What that word is matters less than that it is agreed and short. “Mine” works. “Leave” works. “I have him” is too long and by the time it finishes the picture has changed. What must not happen is a description, an argument, or a call that arrives simultaneously from two players.
The completion signal
A handover is not finished when the receiving defender takes the man. It is finished when the releasing defender has reset his own position and orientation, and defenses forget this constantly. A centre-back who has correctly passed a drifting forward on and then stands where he is, watching, has completed half the procedure. The gap he opened while tracking is still there.
The completion instruction is that the releasing defender recovers to his own zone at the same moment the handover happens, not afterwards, and that his first movement is towards his original position rather than towards the ball. That feels wrong to a defender, because the ball is now on the other side of the pitch and every instinct says to shift across with the play. Shifting across with the play is correct for the line as a unit and incorrect as an individual response to a handover, because the forward’s drift and the ball’s movement are not the same event and the runner arriving into the vacated space is timing his arrival on the drift rather than on the ball.
When the handover cannot happen
There are two situations in which the pass-off is unavailable and a defender has to track, and naming them prevents the rule from being applied where it does not belong.
The first is when the receiving defender is already occupied. If a second forward or an arriving midfielder is in his zone, he cannot take a second man, and the drifting forward must be tracked by his original marker with the covering responsibility shifting to the far side. This is a legitimate exception and it should be called out loud by the receiving defender, whose “no” is as important as his “mine.”
The second is in transition, when the line is not set and there are no zones to speak of. A pass-off requires a structure to pass within. Two things in that table deserve to be pulled out.
The first is the row for the drift dropping wide, where the correct answer is that the back line does not respond at all. A forward who walks out to a wide, deep position has left the defensive line’s area of responsibility, and a centre-back who follows him there has been removed from the game by a movement that cost the forward nothing. The second is the check-back row, which is the highest-value pattern in the table and the one most worth rehearsing. A forward who drifts towards the far post and then checks sharply back towards the near post has produced two handovers in about a second and a half, and the second one arrives while the receiving defender’s shoulders are already turned from the first. Shoulder-check discipline: when a defender is allowed to look
The turned-shoulder cost creates an obvious question. If turning to look at the forward is expensive, and if not knowing where he is is also expensive, when exactly is a defender supposed to gather the information?
The answer is that looking is cheap at some moments and ruinous at others, and the difference is entirely about what the ball is doing. Defenders who coped with a drifting forward were not defenders who never looked at him. They were defenders who looked at defined moments and refused to look at others, and the discipline was rhythmic rather than reactive.
When is it safe for a defender to look at the striker?
While the ball is under control at an opponent’s feet and not about to be released: during a controlling touch, a backwards pass, a defender turning with it, or a goalkeeper preparing to distribute. The look is a snapshot, taken with the eyes and a small head rotation, never with the shoulders, and it ends before the ball is struck.
Those are the safe-look windows, and naming them turns a vague instruction into a trainable habit. A ball that is being settled cannot arrive in the next half-second. A ball that is being circulated sideways in front of a set block is producing no immediate threat. Those are the moments to update the picture, and a defender who takes three or four snapshots per defensive phase has all the information he needs.
The forbidden moments are the mirror image: never look while the ball is being struck, never look during the approach to a cross or a cutback, and never look when a player in a delivery position has his head up. Those are precisely the moments a drifting forward chooses to move, and a defender who takes his snapshot then has been invited to take it.
Eyes, not shoulders
The technical instruction underneath all of this is the smallest and most important coaching point in the article. The information is gathered with the eyes and with a rotation of the head, and the shoulders stay where they are. A defender who has trained this can update his picture of the forward without changing his orientation at all, which means he pays no cost for the look.
Most defenders cannot do this initially, because head and shoulders move together by default and separating them is a learned skill. It is also a completely safe skill to train, requiring no contact, no full pitch and no opposition, which makes it the highest-value early item in a young defender’s education. The scanning rhythm and what it does to the forward
There is a second-order benefit that experienced defenders discover and rarely articulate. A forward who drifts is also gathering information, and the thing he is watching for is the defender’s head. A drifting forward times his movement to the moment the defender’s attention goes elsewhere, which means a defender whose looking pattern is regular and readable is feeding him a metronome.
Breaking that rhythm is a legitimate and cheap defensive tool. A defender who varies when he takes his snapshots, and who occasionally looks at the forward while the forward expects him to be watching the ball, makes the drift a guess rather than a calculation. This costs nothing and it is invisible, and it is the sort of thing that separates a centre-back who is comfortable against this profile from one who is technically correct and still beaten.
The full-back’s version of the same problem
The centre-backs are not the only players paying the turned-shoulder cost. A full-back defending against a forward drifting into his channel has a harder version of the same problem, because he is also responsible for a winger and because his zone is bounded by a touchline that constrains his options.
His instruction is narrower and it is worth stating separately: the full-back never travels inside with a drifting centre-forward. He holds his depth and his width, he lets the forward go, and the far side of the back four adjusts. A full-back who follows a forward inside has opened the widest and most dangerous gap available in a defensive line, because the space outside a full-back who has tucked in is a free crossing position and the recovery run is the longest one on the pitch. If the forward’s drift ends in the full-back’s zone and the centre-back cannot follow, the correct answer is the holding midfielder dropping into the line rather than the full-back stepping inside to meet him.
The near post: why the marking problem and the finishing problem are the same event
Everything so far has treated the drift as a way of disorganizing a defense. It is also a way of arriving at a specific place, and that place was the near post.
The connection is tighter than it first appears. A first-time finish at the near post is only available to a forward who arrives before the ball, and arriving before the ball requires him to have started moving during the half-second in which nobody could see him start. The turned-shoulder cost pays for the near-post run. They are not two threats, they are one sequence, and a defense that solves the marking problem has usually solved the finishing problem without having to think about it separately.
Why the near post is harder to defend than the far post
The far post is a matter of distance and tracking, and it is defended by a runner arriving with the ball in view. It is difficult and it is conventional. The near post is different in three ways that make it the more efficient place for a forward to attack.
The delivery arrives sooner, which shortens every defensive reaction. A ball played to the near post from a wide position covers less ground and arrives at a higher speed relative to the defender’s decision time, so a defender who is a half-step late is beaten, where the same half-step at the far post is recoverable.
The finish requires almost nothing from the forward. A near-post attack is a redirection, not a strike. Contact with any part of the foot, shin or body at the right moment sends the ball goalwards, and the goalkeeper’s ability to react is compressed by the short distance. That is why forwards who specialized in this were often not the most technically extravagant finishers in their era; the skill is timing and courage rather than striking.
And the defensive responsibility is genuinely ambiguous. At the far post, everyone agrees the defense covers it. At the near post the responsibility is split between the defense and the goalkeeper, and split responsibilities are where goals live. Which brings us to the reference that resolves it.

The second half of the keeper’s job is the call, and it belongs in the same instruction. The keeper is the only player who can see the runner, the delivery and the whole defensive line at once. His call before the delivery, naming the near-post runner, is what allows a centre-back to defend a man he cannot see without turning his shoulders to find him. That call is the cheapest fix available to any defense at any level, and it is the one most likely to be missing at every level below the professional game.
Defending the first-time finish specifically
Once the ball is travelling and the forward is arriving, the defender’s objective changes from marking to contact with the ball’s path. A defender chasing a near-post runner should not attempt to reach the forward, because he will not get there and the attempt produces a foul or a deflection. He should attack the line the ball is travelling on, in front of the forward, accepting a deflection into a less dangerous area or a corner.
That is a technical instruction and it is also a decision about what the defense is willing to concede, which is a corner rather than a shot. Defenses that make that trade consistently against near-post threats give up a lot of set pieces and very few goals from open play, and defenses that will not make it give up fewer corners and more goals. The third is spacing, and it is the collective answer. Defenders in the near zone who are tight to each other have no room to absorb a runner arriving between them, and a forward attacking the near post is aiming at exactly the seam between two bodies. Holding proper distances in the box, which feels counterintuitive when a dangerous forward is nearby, means the runner arrives into a defender rather than into a gap.
The version that beats even a good defense
Honesty requires acknowledging that a well-executed double movement, delivered by a crosser who can find the near post at pace, beats organized defenses regularly and will continue to. There is no arrangement of four defenders and a goalkeeper that removes it entirely, because the movement exploits the one thing a defense cannot avoid doing, which is looking at the ball.
What a good plan does is change the frequency and the quality. A defense with the keeper’s call, the deceleration cue and proper box spacing turns a high-percentage pattern into a low-percentage one, and forces the attacking side to execute a difficult delivery under pressure rather than a routine one into an open seam. That is what defending this profile looks like at its best: not prevention, but the conversion of a repeatable threat into an occasional one.
The drift and the offside line
There is a dimension to lateral movement that almost never gets discussed and that decides a surprising number of the sequences it produces. A forward drifting across a defensive line is continuously changing which defender is his reference for the offside line, and that is a problem for the defense rather than for him.
Consider what the line is actually doing. A back four holding an offside line is a coordinated unit whose depth is set by whichever defender is deepest, and every player in it is calibrating his position against a teammate he can only partly see. Introduce a forward walking across the front of that line and two things happen.
The defenders he passes have their attention drawn to him in sequence, which means the player setting the line’s depth changes hands as the forward travels. A defender who is concentrating on a man tends to hold his ground or drop half a yard, and a defender who is concentrating on the ball tends to step. So a drift produces a rolling inconsistency along the line, with each defender momentarily deeper as the forward crosses him, and a line with a wave in it is a line that cannot step together.
The second effect is on the step itself. A defense that squeezes forward has to do it as a unit and on a trigger, usually a backwards pass or a poor touch. During a lateral drift, that trigger can arrive at any moment, and it will find one defender turned, one shuffling, and one watching the ball. The step fails, and a failed step is worse than no step at all, because it leaves one defender deeper than the rest and plays everybody onside.
The instruction that follows

The other side of the same coin

Did man-marking ever answer this?
It is the obvious counter-proposal. If passing a forward between defenders is difficult, assign one defender to him permanently, remove the handover, and remove the problem with it. The logic is clean and the result is worse than the problem it solves, and the reason is a nice piece of tactical arithmetic.
A man-marker following a lateral drift is doing, by instruction, the exact thing this article has spent several thousand words telling defenders not to do. He tracks across the line, he pays the turned-shoulder cost on every drift, and he creates the double occupancy deliberately rather than accidentally. Man-marking does not solve the drift; it automates the defensive error the drift is designed to produce.
That is why lateral movement was historically such an effective weapon against man-oriented systems and why forwards who specialized in it caused disproportionate trouble to defenses built on individual assignments. The forward does not have to beat his marker. He only has to walk, and his marker’s own instructions dismantle the line behind him.
There is a version that works, and it requires a spare defender. A marking centre-back operating in front of a genuine covering player can follow a drift without opening anything, because the space he vacates is already occupied by somebody whose job is to occupy it. That is a system choice with a cost elsewhere, since committing a player to cover means playing with one fewer somewhere further up, and it is the reason man-oriented back lines historically came with a sweeper or a back three rather than a flat four.
The modern hybrid is more common and more useful: zonal by default, man-oriented within the zone. The defender takes anyone who enters his area, aggressively and tightly, and releases at the boundary. That gives a side most of the benefit of tight marking with none of the tracking, and it is the shape of nearly every well-organized defense at the top of the game. Defending the drift in transition
Everything above assumes a set defensive line with zones to pass within. In transition there are no zones, and a defense that tries to apply the pass-off procedure in an unstructured moment will produce chaos, because two players cannot agree a boundary that does not exist.
Transition is where a lateral drifter is most dangerous and it is also where the answer is simplest, which is an unusual combination. The reason he is dangerous is that a defense recovering towards its own goal is composed of players running in the same direction with their eyes forward, and a forward moving laterally across those recovery runs is invisible to almost all of them. The reason the answer is simple is that recovering defenders do not need to solve a marking problem at all. They need to solve a geometry problem.
The instruction is to recover to the goal side line first and worry about the man second. A defender sprinting back should be running towards a position between the ball and his own goal, not towards the forward, and he should arrive at that position and then look. Defenders who chase the man in transition end up running level with him, which is the worst available position because it offers no protection and no interception line, and it is the classic way a counter-attack that should have been contained becomes a chance.
The second instruction concerns the deepest defender, and it is the one that decides whether a transition ends safely. The deepest recovering player does not press the ball and does not follow a drifting forward. He holds the central lane in front of his own goalkeeper and lets the attack come to him, because everything the attacking side wants to do requires somebody to arrive in that lane, and a defender standing in it is worth two defenders chasing.
For sides that build their whole game around winning the ball and attacking immediately, the lateral drift in transition is a specific rehearsed pattern rather than an improvisation, which is one reason this profile fit so naturally into counter-attacking teams. The partner effect: what a second forward does to the pass-off

It fails when the swap is late, which produces a moment when both defenders are attached to the same forward and the second is entirely free. And it fails when the swap does not happen at all, because one defender refuses to release. A centre-back who has been beaten once by a forward tends to hold onto him, which is understandable and ruinous, and the partner is left choosing between covering an unmarked striker and holding his own zone.
The rule that makes it manageable
Assign by zone and swap on the boundary, exactly as before, but add a second call. The receiving defender says “mine” for the man he is taking, and the releasing defender says the name or the number of the man he is handing over. Two short calls, spoken over each other, is not a problem; silence is.
The deeper structural answer is to stop trying to solve it with four players. Against a front two containing a drifter, the holding midfielder’s default position should be inside the line rather than in front of it, which converts the swap from a two-defender problem into a three-defender one and gives each transfer a spare body. Which forward is harder, and why the answer is not obvious
There is a common assumption that a forward is more dangerous with a partner because the defense has more to think about. Against this profile the answer is closer to the reverse, and it is worth setting out because it affects how a coach prepares.
A lone drifter faces a back four with a spare defender and clean handovers, but he also has the whole width of the line to work with, no competition for the space he vacates, and complete freedom about when to move. A drifter in a front two has a defense with no spare man, which is an advantage, and he also has a teammate occupying some of the space his movement is designed to open, which is a disadvantage, and his drift is now constrained by the need not to run into his partner’s area.
The verdict for a coach preparing against him is that the front two version is harder to organize and easier to predict, while the lone version is easier to organize and harder to anticipate. Which matters more depends on the defense: a well-drilled back four with strong communication would rather face the front two, and a disorganized one would much rather face him alone.
The second problem: a forward who defends
Late in his career this subject took on roles that most forwards of comparable standing would have refused: wide positions with real defensive obligations, deeper starting points, and phases of matches spent doing a job that produced nothing visible. That fact is usually told as a story about character, and this series has no interest in telling it that way, partly because character claims about real people are outside what analysis can support and mostly because the tactical version is more interesting.
Treat it instead as a variable. What does it do to an opponent when a forward of this quality is willing to occupy a defensive position, and what does it cost the side that asks him to?
What it does to the opponent
The first effect is on the opposition full-back, and it is severe. A full-back’s attacking value depends on being able to leave his position, and his willingness to leave it depends on who is in front of him. Facing a winger, he calculates a risk he understands. Facing a centre-forward of genuine quality who has dropped into a wide defensive role, he faces a different calculation entirely: the player he leaves behind is not a wide player who will attack the space he vacates in a conventional way, but a finisher who will arrive in the penalty area if the ball travels quickly.
That calculation usually resolves into caution, and caution in a full-back is worth more to a defending side than an extra body in midfield. A team that neutralizes one attacking full-back with one forward has made a favorable exchange and has done it without changing formation.
The second effect is on the shape of the counter-attack, and this one cuts both ways. A forward starting from a deep, wide position arrives into the penalty area later and from an angle rather than starting on the last line. A forward in a deep wide position is a forward not pinning a centre-back. Pinning is invisible work and it is worth a great deal: a defensive line with a serious forward on its shoulder cannot step up freely, cannot squeeze the space in front of it, and cannot commit its centre-backs forward. Remove that forward from the last line and the opposition back four is released. It can hold a higher line, it can compress the midfield, and it can defend its own box with more bodies because it is no longer worried about the space behind it.
So the trade is real: a defensive gain in one wide area against an attacking loss in the central zone that matters most. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on what the side is trying to do. For a team defending a lead, defending a European tie, or facing an opponent whose main threat comes down one flank, it is clearly worth it. For a team that needs to score against a side sitting deep, it is close to self-harm, because the deep block is already unpinned and the forward has removed himself from the only area where he was creating a problem.
What a coach should take from it
The transferable lesson is about how to think, not about what to do. A player’s willingness to occupy an unfamiliar role is a tactical asset with a price, and the coach’s job is to know the price and to pay it only when the return justifies it. The version of this that fails is the coach who asks a forward to defend because it feels industrious, gains a marginal defensive improvement, and loses the pin without noticing that he has lost it.
The version that works is specific and temporary: the role is used for phases rather than for whole matches, it is tied to a particular opposition threat rather than applied generally, and the side has a plan for who pins the back line while the forward is elsewhere. The communicator
The most valuable and the least glamorous. What he actually does is unglamorous and specific: he calls the receiving side of every handover, he calls his partner back into position after a release, and he names the runner arriving into the vacated space before the runner arrives. Defenses containing one player like this look calm against a drifting forward and defenses containing none look chaotic, and the difference is not talent.
He needs a partner who listens and a goalkeeper who adds the information he cannot see. Give him those and he can run a back four against lateral movement all afternoon.
The zonal disciplinarian
The defender who simply will not leave his area. He is often described as positionally excellent, which is accurate and undersells what he is doing, because holding a zone against a forward drifting across it requires actively resisting an instinct rather than passively standing still.
His strength is that he never produces the double occupancy, and his weakness is that a forward who receives at the boundary of two zones can find a moment when neither defender is committed. He therefore needs a partner with the same discipline, because a zonal defender next to a tracker is the worst combination available: one holds, the other follows, and the gap between them is the largest on the pitch.
The front-foot centre-back with cover behind
The aggressive defender who steps onto the forward the moment he receives, disrupting the reception before the sequence can develop. Against a lateral drifter this works well in one respect and creates a specific danger in another.
It works because a drift that ends in a reception under immediate pressure produces nothing, and the whole pattern depends on the forward getting a clean touch and a clear picture. It creates danger because a defender stepping out of the line to meet a forward who has drifted is stepping across the line rather than forwards along it, which pulls the back four’s shape sideways and opens the space behind at an angle rather than centrally. He needs a covering partner who reads the step and drops, and a holding midfielder who fills.
The full-back who tucks
The forgotten profile and often the decisive one. When a drift moves the whole back line towards one side, the far-side full-back is the player who either closes the resulting gap or leaves it open, and the ones who closed it did so early and without being told.
What separates a full-back who does this from one who does not is where he is looking. A full-back watching the ball tucks late, because he responds to the pass. A full-back watching the drift tucks as the forward travels, which means the space is already covered when the switch arrives. It is exactly the same perceptual skill the centre-backs need, applied by a player who is usually not included in the conversation about defending a striker.
The profile that struggled
The defender who struggled most was the man-oriented tracker with good pace and no covering system: a defender whose instinct is to stay with his man, whose speed persuades him he can afford to, and who has nobody behind him whose job is to fix what he opens. Every quality he has encourages the exact behavior that funds the movement.
The pairing that struggled most was any two centre-backs who did not talk. Two excellent defenders who do not communicate are worse against lateral movement than two ordinary defenders who do, and that is one of the very few statements in this series that can be made without qualification.
The slow pairing question
A separate case worth its own paragraph, because it is a common search and the mechanism is not what people assume. A slow centre-back pairing is not primarily vulnerable to a drifting forward because he can outrun them. He is not usually running. The failure modes and what causes them
Six ways this duel is lost. Each has a cause that is fixable and each is recognizable from the touchline while it is happening.
Tracking laterally
The root error, from which most of the others follow. A defender follows the drift across the line, pays the turned-shoulder cost, and creates the double occupancy. The cause is almost never ignorance of the rule; it is that the rule is uncomfortable, because releasing a dangerous forward feels like abandoning a responsibility and defenders are trained from childhood to feel responsible for a man. The fix is to reframe the responsibility as a zone rather than a person, and to make the receiving defender’s call loud enough that the releasing defender is being told to let go rather than deciding to.
Both centre-backs converging
The second, and the one that produces goals rather than merely discomfort. The near defender tracks and the far defender, seeing the forward arrive, also comes to meet him. Two players commit to one man, the line loses its shape entirely, and the ball goes into the area either of them just left.
The cause is a missing call and a shared assumption. Both defenders think the situation is dangerous, both want to help, and neither has been told who owns it. This is why the handover call is defined as the receiving defender’s responsibility and why the word matters: a call that says “mine” also says, implicitly, that the other player is not needed.
The far-side full-back failing to tuck
The third, and the one that turns a contained situation into a goal from a switch. The back line shifts towards the ball, the far-side full-back holds his width because he can see a winger in front of him, and the space between him and the far centre-back becomes the target for the runner who has been waiting for the drift to open it.
The cause is a genuine conflict of responsibilities rather than an error, which is why it needs a rule rather than a rebuke. The rule that works is that the far-side full-back narrows on the drift and widens on the ball, meaning he responds to the forward’s movement by tucking and to the ball’s arrival by pushing out. If he waits for the ball to make his decision, he is always a pass late.
The head turning at the moment of delivery
The fourth is individual and technical. A defender takes his look at the forward during the approach to a cross or at the moment a player in a wide area lifts his head, which is precisely when the information is least useful and most expensive. The forward moves, the delivery arrives, and the defender is reacquiring the ball while the ball is arriving.
The cause is an untrained scanning rhythm. The fix is the safe-look windows, which is a habit rather than a decision and which takes weeks of low-intensity repetition rather than a team meeting.
The line dropping with the drift
The fifth is collective and it is subtle. As the forward drifts across the face of the defense, the line’s instinct is to drop a yard or two, because a forward moving in front of them feels like a threat approaching. Dropping does two bad things at once: it opens the space in front of the line where the forward wants to receive, and it shortens the distance between the line and the goalkeeper, which is the space a near-post runner attacks.
The correct behavior is to hold the line’s height through a lateral drift, because a forward moving sideways is not attacking the space behind and there is no reason to concede depth to him. Holding requires the defenders to be confident that the pass-off is going to work, which is another reason the organizational work has to come first.
The goalkeeper set too late
The sixth, and it is the one that converts a well-defended sequence into a goal anyway. A keeper who is still adjusting when a first-time near-post finish is struck has no chance, regardless of how well the marking was executed. The cause is that the keeper is reading the delivery rather than the runner, and against a late-arriving forward the delivery gives him about half the warning he needs. The common root

An individual handover rule is only as good as the structure around it, and four supports have to be in place before a back four can defend lateral movement calmly.
Line height held through the drift
The first is a decision about height that survives the movement. A line that holds its height through a lateral drift keeps the space in front of it small and keeps the distance from the last defender to the goalkeeper large, which is the geometry that makes near-post arrivals difficult. A line that drops on the drift reverses both.
The instruction is easier to hold than it sounds once the reasoning is shared with the players, because the reasoning is simple: a forward travelling sideways cannot attack the space behind you on his next movement. The holding midfielder as the fifth defender
The second is the player who fills. Every handover rule in this article eventually reaches a case where the back four cannot cover something on its own, whether it is a full-back who must not tuck, a centre-back who has stepped, or a drift that ends in a zone already occupied. In all of those cases the answer is the same player: the holding midfielder dropping into the line.
What makes this work is that he drops on the drift rather than on the pass. A midfielder who fills after the ball has moved is filling a space the ball has already reached. A midfielder who reads the forward’s travel and drops as it happens arrives before anything has been played, and the attacking side finds a back five where it expected a back four.
The screen in front of the cutback
The third is the player who protects the area at the top of the penalty box, because a defense that successfully passes a forward across the line and defends the near post will concede a proportion of its chances from the ball pulled back to the edge. That is the natural release for an attack that has been squeezed at the front post, and a defense with nobody in that zone has solved the primary threat and handed over the secondary one.
The player is usually the second midfielder, and his instruction is not to press the crosser but to hold the space, facing the ball, in a position where he can either block a strike or take a loose ball. He will look uninvolved. He is the reason the sequence ends.
The goalkeeper’s information
The fourth has already been covered and belongs on the list because it is a structural support rather than an individual skill. The keeper’s early call naming the near-post runner is what allows a centre-back to defend a man without looking at him, which is the whole basis of the shoulder discipline. Without it, the back four is guessing, and a guessing defense tracks.
What this plan costs
Four concessions, each of which should be accepted deliberately.
It concedes clean receptions. A defense that passes a forward across the line rather than following him will let him receive the ball more often, in more places, with less immediate pressure. That is uncomfortable to watch and it is the correct trade, because a reception in front of an organized line with the defense’s shape intact is a low-value event and a reception in front of a disorganized line is not.
It concedes the boundary moment. Every handover has a moment when responsibility is in the air, and a sharp forward will occasionally receive in exactly that moment. There is no version of a zonal pass-off that removes this; there is only a version that makes the moment short and predictable rather than long and variable.
It concedes corners. The near-post instruction to attack the ball’s path rather than the runner produces deflections, and deflections produce set pieces. A defense using this plan will defend more corners than one that tries to reach the forward, and it will concede fewer goals from open play doing it.
It concedes individual duels that a coach can see and cannot fix.
