The second component is body positioning in the moment before contact. He gets his arm across, gets his body between defender and ball, and creates the half-yard by feel rather than by looking. The template that actually reduces him works on the supply side rather than the duel side: deny the long diagonal at the source, force the opposition to build through midfield where the duel is not available, and make the first contact happen forty yards from goal rather than twenty. Julian Alvarez: the hybrid, and why hybrids are planned for differently

Alvarez is an Argentine forward and a World Cup winner with Argentina who came through River Plate before Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, and who has operated both as a lone nine and as a second striker. He is the example that proves the taxonomy has to be applied to a role rather than to a person, because his threat type genuinely changes with the role he is given.

As a lone nine in a possession side he behaves closest to the drop-and-link type with a heavy pressing contribution, coming toward the ball, linking, and arriving late into the box. As a second striker alongside a target he becomes a depth runner, attacking the space that the first forward’s duel creates, and the plan against him has to change accordingly. Against a hybrid, the classification exercise is done twice, and the plan carries a trigger: if he starts on the shoulder, template one applies; if he starts between the lines, template three applies; and if the opposition change his role at half time, the trigger has already been discussed and the response does not require a new meeting. Why the mirror image matters

Coaches who spend a season studying how to reduce forwards eventually discover that the same map read backward is a coaching manual for their own attackers. Every conceded input in the matrix above is an invitation to a forward who knows how to accept it, and the forward’s version of this guide, which treats the centre-back as the subject and asks where his structure breaks, is the companion piece on attacking elite centre-backs from the forward’s side of the duel. Reading both is how a coach stops seeing defending and attacking as separate subjects.

The Four Templates, Phase by Phase

The matrix gives the shape of each plan. This section gives the plan itself, narrated in sequence, because a defensive plan is a series of decisions in time rather than a diagram.

Template one: defending the depth runner

The plan in one sentence: compress the space behind by defending in a mid-to-low block with an actively sweeping goalkeeper, and accept crosses and long shots as the price.

Phase one is the setting of the reference. The last line does not defend a fixed line on the grass; it defends a distance from its own goal, and that distance is roughly thirty yards when the ball is in the opposition half and considerably less when the ball reaches the final third. The number matters more than the principle, because “drop off a bit” produces four defenders at four different depths and a forward who only needs one of them to be a yard high. Give the back line one reference point, usually the near centre-back, and require the other three to relate to him rather than to the ball.

Phase two is the denial of the pass rather than the run. This is the part most teams get wrong, and it is the reason so many well-drilled back lines still get run through. A depth runner cannot be stopped by defenders once the ball is travelling; the physics do not allow it. He is stopped by preventing the ball from being played, which is a midfield job. The screening midfielder’s reference is not the ball carrier and not the forward, but the lane between them. He positions so that the direct forward pass requires a lofted, slower, more readable delivery, and he accepts that the sideways pass is available. A holding midfielder who spends the match pressing the ball carrier has abandoned his actual function.

Phase three is the individual duel when the pass does arrive. The primary defender’s profile is recovery pace before aggression, because against this type a defender who steps and misses has ended the sequence badly. His body shape at the moment of the pass should already be half-turned toward his own goal, hips open to the side the ball is coming from, so that his first movement is a run rather than a turn. The single most common technical error here is a defender standing square, watching the pass, and then having to turn a hundred and eighty degrees while a forward with a running start goes past him.

Phase four is the second defender. He is behind and inside, never flat, and his job is not to double the forward but to be the reason the forward’s first touch has to be a controlled one rather than a shooting one. A covering defender in the right position converts a clear run on goal into a run into a funnel, and the funnel points away from the middle of the pitch.

Phase five is the goalkeeper. Against this type the goalkeeper is a defender, and his start position should be ten to fourteen yards from his line when the ball is in the middle third. That is not a preference; it is what makes the whole structure work, because it converts every ball played into the channel behind into a race the goalkeeper can win. Goalkeepers who are uncomfortable with this should be given a modified plan rather than an instruction they will not execute, and the modification is a deeper line, which costs more elsewhere.

Phase six is the concession, managed. Crosses will come, and they will come from unpressured wide players, so the near-post marking and the rebound zones need to be organized before the match rather than discovered during it. Long shots will come, so the block’s second line has to close the shooting lanes from twenty to twenty-five yards rather than dropping to the edge of the six-yard box and watching.

The fallback, when the first plan is beaten twice, is not to drop deeper. Dropping deeper against a depth runner who has already got behind you means you are now defending the same runs with less distance to recover into and a goalkeeper who can no longer sweep. The correct fallback is to add a body to the screening job, usually by shifting from two central midfielders to three, which reduces the number of forward passes attempted rather than the space they are played into.

Template two: defending the box occupier

The plan in one sentence: destroy the delivery platform in the wide areas and defend the two rebound zones religiously, accepting that the opposition will have the ball in front of you all evening.

Phase one is the wide defensive assignment, which is where this plan is won and lost. The objective is not to stop the winger; it is to stop the delivery from the two areas that produce quality service, which are the byline cutback zone and the half-space pocket between full-back and centre-back. Everything else is a manageable cross. That means the full-back defends the inside shoulder and shows the winger down the line, the wide midfielder tracks back to double rather than to press, and the near centre-back’s first job is to prevent the ball from reaching the cutback zone at all.

Phase two is the marking scheme inside the box, and the choice between man, zonal, and hybrid should be made on the basis of the players available rather than on ideology. What matters far more than the scheme is that every player knows which of two jobs he has: attacking the ball or attacking the space. Players who are trying to do both do neither. Against a box occupier of this quality, the recommended hybrid is a zonal core of three across the six-yard box with a man-marker on the forward whose only job is to be touch-tight and to occupy his run, plus a front-post attacker whose only job is the flick-on.

Phase three is the timing rule for the marker. The marker’s reference is the forward’s hips and not the ball, because this type initiates his final movement from a static position and the first indication is a hip rotation. A marker watching the ball is always half a second late, and half a second is the whole duel. He should be physically in contact, side-on, with an arm across, from the moment the ball reaches the wide area.

Phase four is the rebound economy, and this is the phase that separates teams who defend crosses well from teams who defend crosses and then concede anyway. Two zones matter: the area immediately in front of the goalkeeper at the top of the six-yard box, and the arc twelve to eighteen yards out where blocked shots and cleared headers land. Assign both explicitly, usually to the screening midfielder for the arc and to a centre-back or full-back for the near zone, and require clearances to go wide rather than central. A cleared header that lands on the penalty spot has not been cleared.

Phase five is the goalkeeper’s role, which against this type is a cross-claiming role rather than a sweeping one. His start position is central in the six-yard box and slightly toward the near post on wide deliveries, and the plan should state clearly whether he is a keeper who comes for crosses or one who holds his line, because the defenders in front of him need to know which. A goalkeeper who sometimes comes is worse than either alternative.

Phase six is the concession, managed. This plan hands the opposition possession and territory in front of the block, so the concession is space in the middle third and shooting from distance. Manage it by keeping the block’s second line high enough to contest shots from twenty yards, and by accepting that the opposition’s centre-backs will have the ball. They are welcome to it.

The fallback, when the crosses are arriving anyway, is to add a body to the wide area rather than to the box. Six players in the box against a good crosser is not safer than five; it is more congested, and congestion favors the attacking side because the attacker knows where he is going and the defenders are reacting.

The plan in one sentence: let him receive, never let him turn, and defend the seam with a midfielder rather than with a centre-back, accepting the set-piece and second-chance cost that the resulting pressure creates.

Phase one is the recognition of the receiving zone. Before the match, identify the two or three yards of pitch where this forward habitually receives, which is almost always the seam between the opposition’s own midfield and the defensive line, offset toward one side. That zone is the assignment. It is not the player, and the distinction is important: assigning a man to follow him everywhere produces a defender in odd positions all over the pitch, whereas assigning a man to own the zone produces a structure that holds.

Phase two is the screening midfielder’s positioning and it is the heart of this plan. He plays goalside of the receiving zone, not touch-tight but within a stride, with his body angled so that he can see both the ball and the forward’s shoulders. When the pass is played into the forward, he steps into the forward’s back at the moment of the touch. Not before, which is a foul or a bypass, and not after, which is too late. The objective is not to win the ball. It is to make the turn impossible, so the forward’s only option is to lay the ball back the way it came, at which point the entire sequence has cost the attacking side two passes and gained them nothing.

Phase three is the centre-back’s decision, which follows from phase two rather than preceding it. Because the midfielder owns the seam, the centre-back is not obliged to follow the forward out of the line, and that is the point of the whole design. He steps only when the midfielder is beaten or absent, and when he steps he steps early and aggressively, arriving as the ball arrives rather than two seconds afterward. A centre-back who steps late has produced the worst of both worlds: he has left the line and he has not prevented the turn.

Phase four is the covering slide. The instant the centre-back does step, the remaining defenders shift into a three-across-the-back relationship, with the far centre-back taking the central lane and the near full-back tucking in. This has to be automatic, because the pass that punishes a stepping centre-back is played within a second of him stepping. If your back line needs to be told, it is already too late.

Phase five is the line height, which is high to mid and never deep, for the reason given in the section on Kane above. A deep line against this type relocates the seam into your penalty area. If you are losing the match and instinct says drop, resist it; the correct response is to add a second screening body, not to add depth.

Phase six is the concession, managed. This plan is aggressive and produces fouls in dangerous areas, stepping defenders who occasionally get caught, and a higher volume of set pieces against. Rehearse the set-piece defense properly, because that is the price of this plan and it is a price worth paying against this type.

The fallback, when he is turning anyway, is a temporary man-marking assignment on the forward by the screening midfielder for a fifteen-minute period, accepting the shape distortion, usually while the team is protecting a lead and can afford a more conservative midfield.

Template four: defending the duel forward

The plan in one sentence: attack the supply so the duel never happens, compete for the first contact early rather than deep, and own the second ball, accepting that the space behind is exposed when the first contact is lost.

Phase one is the pressure on the source. Long balls and channel diagonals require a player with time and a clear head, so the objective is to make every long delivery a hurried one. Against this type the press does not need to win the ball; it needs to make the delivery inaccurate. An inaccurate long ball is a duel the forward starts from a bad position, and the whole plan is a series of those.

Phase two is the first-contact assignment. The primary defender competes early, meeting the ball at the highest point he can reach, and he goes for the ball rather than for the man. Passive defending against this type is punished immediately, because a forward allowed to control the ball with his back to goal and a defender behind him has won the phase before it started.

Phase three, and this is the phase teams neglect, is the second ball. The first contact against an elite duel forward is genuinely a coin flip, and a plan that assumes the defender wins it is not a plan. Assign the flick-on landing area, which is typically ten to fifteen yards behind and to the side of the duel, to a specific midfielder, and require the far-side midfielder to compress toward the duel rather than holding width. Teams that win second balls consistently look like they are defending a different match from the one their opponents are playing.

Phase four is the channel-run coverage. This type attacks the channel between full-back and centre-back with a running duel rather than a pure sprint, so the full-back’s job is to stay tight to his inside shoulder and force the run outside, and the covering centre-back’s job is to arrive at the same time. A duel forward who is forced wide and met by two defenders has been reduced to a crosser.

Phase five is the fatigue plan. Against this type, the defenders’ physical decay is a tactical variable rather than a medical one. Plan the substitutions around it, consider a fresh central defender or a fresh screening midfielder in the last twenty-five minutes, and be aware that the last quarter of the match is where this type’s output concentrates.

Phase six is the concession, managed. This plan is played high and it concedes the space behind when the first contact is lost, so the goalkeeper is sweeping and the covering defender is genuinely deep. That is the trade, and it is the right trade against a forward whose primary value is contact rather than pure running.

The fallback, when the first contacts are being lost repeatedly, is to change the defender rather than the plan, because this is the one type where the individual matchup dominates the structural one.

Which input should a plan concede on purpose?

Concede the input the specific forward is worst at converting, and the one your own personnel are best equipped to defend. Against a depth runner with a modest aerial record, concede crosses. Against a box occupier with no acceleration, concede the space in front. Name it in the meeting, rehearse it in the week, and the concession stops being a weakness.

The Principles That Transfer Across All Four Types

Four templates is four things to remember, which is three too many for a player under pressure in the seventy-eighth minute. Underneath them sit six principles that apply regardless of type, and a team that has genuinely installed these six will defend a forward it has never seen better than a team that memorized a template for the one it prepared for.

First-defender body orientation

The most consequential technical detail in defending forwards is the angle of the first defender’s hips at the moment the pass is played, and it is barely coached at amateur level. Square hips mean the defender can move in any direction slowly. Open hips, angled toward the side the ball is coming from and half-turned toward his own goal, mean he can move in one direction very quickly and in the other direction adequately. Almost every duel against a forward is decided by which of those two states the defender was in half a second before the ball arrived.

The rule that makes this teachable is that the defender’s orientation is set by where the danger is, not by where the ball is. Against a depth runner the danger is behind, so the hips open toward his own goal. Against a drop-and-link forward the danger is the turn, so the hips are square and the weight is forward, ready to step. Against a box occupier the danger is the near-post movement, so the body is side-on with contact established. Against a duel forward the danger is the first contact, so the body is front-foot and the defender is already moving toward the flight of the ball. Same principle, four applications.

The distance between the last line and the goalkeeper

This is the single number that a defensive plan most often leaves undefined, and leaving it undefined is how teams end up with a high line and a goalkeeper on his six-yard line, which is not a structure but a gap. Decide the number, say it out loud, and let both the back line and the goalkeeper repeat it back. Twelve yards is a common working figure for a team defending a high line with an active goalkeeper; six or seven for a deeper block with a keeper who stays.

What makes it a shared variable rather than two separate ones is that the space between them is nobody’s by default and therefore everybody’s by accident. A ball played into that space is defended by whoever decides to defend it, and if two players decide simultaneously or neither does, the outcome is the same. The distance should also change with the ball’s position: it shrinks when the opposition’s carrier is under pressure and cannot play the pass, and it grows when he has time, because time means a chip or a threaded ball is coming.

The screening midfielder’s reference point

A holding midfielder in front of a back four has three possible references, and only one of them is right. He can reference the ball, in which case he presses and leaves the space behind him. He can reference the opposition’s most advanced midfielder, in which case he man-marks and gets dragged around. Or he can reference the lane between the ball and the most dangerous receiver, which is the correct answer against every forward type in this guide.

Practically, that means his position is determined by drawing a line from the ball to the forward’s feet and standing on it, at a depth that lets him also step into a receiver in front. He is not trying to intercept, though interceptions happen. He is trying to make the forward pass slow, lofted, or impossible, which is a much lower bar and a much more reliable one. The failure mode to watch for is ball-watching, which is what happens when a screening midfielder loses his reference and starts responding to whatever looks urgent.

Delay before commitment

Every one of the four templates contains a moment where a defender is tempted to commit, and in almost every case delay is worth more than the tackle. A forward with the ball and his back to goal, twenty-five yards out, is not dangerous. He becomes dangerous when a defender commits and is beaten. The instruction is to show, delay, and force the play sideways or backward until support arrives, and to make the tackle only when the ball is loose or the touch is heavy.

This is harder to coach than it sounds, because a delayed defender looks passive and a committed one looks brave, and the crowd, the bench, and the player’s own instinct all reward the wrong thing. The way to install it is to define the trigger for committing rather than the prohibition on it: commit when the forward’s touch takes the ball more than a stride from his foot, when he has been forced onto his weaker side, or when a second defender is within two yards. Otherwise, delay.

Clearance direction and the second-chance economy

Every clearance is either the end of an attack or the start of the next one, and the difference is direction. A ball cleared into the central arc twelve to eighteen yards out is returned with interest against every one of these forward types, because that is where the box occupier is standing and where the drop-and-link forward has arrived late. A ball cleared wide and high buys three seconds and forces a rebuild.

Install two habits. Defenders clear away from the middle, toward the touchline, and upward rather than flat. And a designated player occupies the central arc when the ball enters the box, whose entire job is to be standing where the rebounds land. That player is usually the screening midfielder, and against the box occupier type he is more valuable there than anywhere else on the pitch.

Communication that carries information

Defensive talking is mostly noise, and noise is not communication. “Man on” tells a player nothing he does not already suspect. Useful defensive communication contains a direction, a number, or a decision: “he is behind you left”, “step, I have cover”, “he is dropping, I have him”, “keeper’s ball”. Against a forward whose movement is designed to break the visual link between two defenders, the voice is the only thing that maintains it, which is why the sequences these forwards score from so often begin with one defender who could see the run and did not say anything.

Why the Wrong Template Makes a Forward Better

The strongest claim in this guide is that mismatching the template is worse than having no template at all, and it deserves to be defended rather than asserted.

Take the most common error, which is applying the depth-runner template to a drop-and-link forward. The depth-runner template drops the line. Dropping the line against a forward whose value is created between the lines does three things simultaneously, all of them helpful to him. It moves the seam he receives in closer to your goal, so the pass he plays after turning is a final pass rather than a build-up pass. It removes the space behind, which he did not want, in exchange for space in front of your defenders, which he did. And it hands his teammates the entire middle third, so the number of times he receives goes up. You have not reduced his output; you have changed the location of his contributions and increased their value.

Take the reverse error, which is applying a high, aggressive template to a pure depth runner because somebody in the meeting said the best form of defense is to press. Now the space behind is at its maximum, the forward’s start position is on the shoulder of a defender who is thirty-five yards from his own goal, and every turnover in midfield is a foot race that only ends one way. A single misplaced press trigger produces a chance, and the forward does not need many.

Take the third error, which is applying the box-occupier template, with its emphasis on defending the delivery and packing the area, to a duel forward. Packing the box against a forward whose value is the first contact gives him more bodies to make contact against and more knockdowns to attack, in a crowd where his teammates’ late runs are unmarkable. And the wide defensive assignment that the box-occupier template requires pulls the very players who should have been controlling the second ball into positions where they cannot.

The general form of the claim is that every one of these templates gives something up, and each forward type is specifically excellent at converting one of those concessions. The depth-runner template concedes crosses, which is what the box occupier wants. The box-occupier template concedes space in front, which is what the drop-and-link forward wants. The drop-and-link template concedes set pieces and second chances, which is what the box occupier and the duel forward want. The duel template concedes the space behind, which is what the depth runner wants. Mismatch the template and you have not simply failed to solve the problem; you have handed the forward the exact input he is best in the league at converting.

Why does the wrong template make a forward better?

Because each template concedes a specific input, and each forward type is defined by his ability to convert a specific input. Match them wrongly and the concession you chose is the one he is best at punishing. This is why classification precedes planning, and why a plan built on reputation rather than threat type is worse than no plan.

Transitions, Set Pieces, and the Inputs Nobody Rehearses

A defensive plan against a forward that only covers settled play covers roughly half of the match, and the wrong half. The moments when elite forwards produce their highest-value chances cluster heavily in transition and at dead balls, and both are governed by preparation rather than by defending ability.

Rest defense and the transition problem

Every attack a team mounts is also a defensive position, and the shape of the players who did not go forward determines whether a turnover becomes a counter-attack. Against a depth runner or a duel forward, the rest-defense structure has to be planned as carefully as the block, because a turnover in the opposition half with a forward on the shoulder is the highest-quality chance available in football.

The practical version is a decision about numbers and positions behind the ball during attacks. Two centre-backs plus a screening midfielder, with at least one full-back holding, is the conservative default against these types, and it means accepting fewer bodies in the opposition box. The second element is the counter-press rule: after a turnover, the nearest two players press immediately to delay the first pass, not to win the ball, because the depth runner needs the first pass to be forward and quick. Delay it by two seconds and the recovering defenders have arrived.

The third element, which is frequently forgotten, is the goalkeeper’s role during your own attacks. Against a forward whose threat is the ball over the top from a turnover, the goalkeeper’s start position during your possession phases should be much higher than most goalkeepers naturally take, because his sweeping range is the difference between a counter-attack and a clearance.

The set-piece dimension

All four forward types are dangerous at attacking set pieces, but the box occupier and the duel forward are dangerous in a different way from the others, and the marking scheme should reflect it. The box occupier attacks the space between two markers and arrives late, which argues for a man-marker plus a zonal core. The duel forward attacks the ball at its highest point and wants contact, which argues for a physical marker who competes rather than one who tracks.

The overlooked half is defending set pieces against these forwards when your team is defending a lead, and the overlooked detail is the near-post zone. Most goals conceded from corners at every level below the elite come from the near post, either from a flick-on or from a ball that beats the first man. Assign it to a player who attacks the ball rather than to the shortest player available, and require him to attack from a running start rather than a standing one.

The other set-piece consideration is your own, because a forward of this type is the primary counter-attacking outlet when your corner is cleared. The rest-defense principle applies to attacking set pieces exactly as it applies to open play, and the two players who stay back exist specifically to make sure the cleared corner does not become a three-versus-two.

The second-chance input in practice

The rebound economy has been mentioned in several templates and deserves consolidation, because it is the input teams most consistently concede by accident. Second chances come from four sources: parried shots, blocked shots, cleared headers, and loose balls from challenges. Three of the four are within your control.

Goalkeeper technique determines where parries go, and a goalkeeper who parries wide rather than straight has removed a category of chance. Blocking technique determines where blocked shots go, and defenders who block with a closed body shape send the ball out rather than up. Clearance direction, already covered, determines where headers land. And the occupation of the central arc determines whether any of those loose balls are contested. A team that addresses all four has meaningfully reduced the third input without changing its shape at all, which makes this the cheapest defensive improvement available to most sides.

Who Each Type Is Hardest For

The same forward presents a different level of difficulty to different teams, and the difference is structural rather than a question of talent. Knowing which type is hardest for your own side is how a coach decides where to spend a limited preparation week.

The high-line possession side

A team that defends high and wants the ball is close to invulnerable against a box occupier and severely exposed to a depth runner. The box occupier needs a delivery platform, and a side that presses the ball high and wins it back in the opposition half never allows the platform to form. The depth runner needs the space this side creates by definition, and no amount of collective quality removes it, because the space is a consequence of the identity.

The honest options are narrow. Either accept a lower line for one match, which the players will find uncomfortable and execute imperfectly, or keep the identity and buy insurance in two places: a centre-back with genuine recovery pace and a goalkeeper who sweeps aggressively. The second option is usually the right one, because a possession side that abandons its structure for a single fixture tends to be worse at both things than it was at one.

The drop-and-link forward is a middling problem for this side, because the high line closes the seam naturally, but the duel forward can be surprisingly awkward: a team that presses high invites the direct ball over the press, and the direct ball over the press is exactly the delivery a duel forward wants.

The mid-block side

A mid-block is the most balanced structure against these four types and the least dominant against any of them. It gives the depth runner less space than a high line, gives the box occupier less crossing time than a low block, and covers the seam adequately without stepping. That balance is genuinely useful for a side that does not know which forward it will face until the team sheet arrives.

The mid-block’s specific vulnerability is the drop-and-link forward, because a mid-block by design leaves a seam between its two banks and this forward’s whole game is finding it. The fix is the screening discipline described above rather than a structural change, and a mid-block side that installs one excellent screening midfielder has closed its main weakness.

The low-block side

A low block is the strongest structure against a depth runner, a reasonable structure against a duel forward whose runs need space, and a poor structure against both the box occupier and the drop-and-link forward. That combination is the opposite of what most low-block sides believe about themselves.

Against the box occupier the low block is bad because it concedes unlimited crossing time to unpressured wide players, and unlimited crossing time is the box occupier’s oxygen. Against the drop-and-link forward it is bad for the reasons already given at length: depth relocates the seam into the danger area. A low-block side facing either type has to modify, and the modification is usually a slightly higher second line rather than a higher back line, so that the crosser is pressed and the seam is occupied without exposing the space behind.

The amateur or school side facing a much better forward

This is the most common situation of all and the one least served by tactical writing. A side with one training session a week and no video is not going to install four templates, and should not try. The simplified version is a two-type classification, which can be made from ten minutes of watching without any equipment: does he mostly run away from the ball, or does he mostly come toward it?

If he runs away from the ball, drop the line, keep a spare defender behind the one who marks him, tell the goalkeeper to start further off his line than feels comfortable, and accept crosses. If he comes toward the ball, keep the line where it is, put your most disciplined midfielder behind him, and tell that midfielder that his only job for the whole match is to be in the forward’s back when the ball arrives. That is the entire plan, it is achievable in one session, and it is dramatically better than concentration and hope.

The other adjustment that works at this level is the deliberate use of a spare man. A back four against a lone forward already contains one, and the mistake is letting all four defenders mark space equally instead of nominating who is free. Nominate him, put him behind, and the two most common amateur concessions, the ball over the top and the missed first contact, both become recoverable.

The youth side

Age changes what can be installed, and pretending otherwise produces sessions that look like coaching and teach nothing.
