Watch a side concede down the flank and count how many people blame the full-back. Almost all of them. Then rewind the sequence eight seconds and count how many defensive decisions were made before the full-back was ever involved. Usually four or five, and at least two of them were wrong. Stopping elite wingers is not a duel problem that occasionally has a structural cause. It is a structural problem that occasionally ends in a duel, and the reason so many coaching plans fail against strong wide attackers is that they begin at the moment the ball arrives, which is the last moment at which anything useful can still be done.

This guide is the hub for the wide-attacker cluster in this series, and its job is to give a coach, an analyst, or a full-back a working classification and a working principle before they ever open a single-subject plan. The classification is four types. The principle is one sentence, and it governs everything below.

The upstream rule

A wide attacker is beaten by the pass he does not receive and by the defender who is already there. Any plan whose first line of defence is the full-back’s feet has conceded the sequence before it starts.

That is the upstream rule, and it will be named consistently throughout this guide because the rest of the article is an expansion of it. It has two halves and both matter. The first half says that the reception is a defensive event, not an attacking one, and that a team which never contests the entry pass has outsourced its entire wide defence to one player in the worst possible circumstance. The second half says that support is a position, not a movement. A second defender who arrives after the first touch is decoration. A second defender who is already standing where the attacker wants to go has changed the problem before the attacker began solving it.

Neither half is complicated. Both are routinely ignored, at every level, including levels where people are paid a great deal to think about this for a living. The reason is that the duel is the visible part. It is what the camera follows, what the crowd reacts to, and what the highlight package preserves. The pass before it and the shape behind it are invisible in exactly the way that structural things usually are, which is why the analysis of wide defending in public conversation is stuck at a level a serious coach abandoned long ago.

Why footedness is the wrong first question

Ask most people to classify a winger and they will start with which foot he uses. Left-footed on the right, right-footed on the left, inverted or orthodox. It is the classification every graphic uses and it is close to useless as the primary sorting mechanism, because it describes a preference rather than a requirement.

Consider what it actually predicts. It predicts the direction of the first meaningful touch, sometimes. It does not predict whether the attacker needs space or traffic, whether he needs a settled defence or a broken one, whether he needs a partner or an empty flank, or whether the threat is manufactured by his own team or generated by him. Those four questions predict everything about how you defend him, and none of them is answered by which boot he shoots with.

The better first question is: what does this attacker need in order to function? Every wide threat has an input requirement, a set of conditions without which the threat does not exist. Remove the input and you have not defended the attacker, you have deleted him, and you have done it without ever asking your full-back to win a footrace against a professional sprinter who has chosen the moment.

That reframing produces four types, and the four types produce four completely different defensive plans. They also produce four different concessions, because every one of these plans surrenders something, and a plan whose author cannot name what it surrenders has not finished thinking.

What are the four types of elite winger?

Wide attackers sort into four types by input requirement. The isolation attacker needs space and a lone defender. The inverted finisher needs the inside lane and a shooting angle. The transition runner needs a turnover with the defensive line high. The combination attacker needs a partner and a crowded area to play through.

Type one: the isolation attacker

The isolation attacker is the type most people picture when they think of a modern winger. He receives high and wide, facing a defender, with grass behind that defender and a large amount of pitch to work in. He does not need a combination, he does not need a turnover, and he does not particularly need the ball to arrive well. He needs to be alone with someone, and he needs enough room that his acceleration is worth something.

Vinicius Junior is the reference example, and the full plan against him lives in the counter blueprint for that specific profile rather than here. Rafael Leao belongs to the same family with different mechanics: taller, longer in the stride, covering ground in fewer touches, more dangerous running at a retreating line than at a set one. What unites them is the input. Both need the isolation, and neither manufactures it alone.

That last point is the one this cluster exists to make. The isolation is produced by the attacking team’s structure, not by the attacker’s movement, and it is produced through a sequence that is visible on video and interruptible in real time. The ball is circulated to the opposite flank. The defensive block shifts across, because blocks are trained to shift across and because refusing to shift feels like negligence. The near-side full-back is left alone, not because he lost anyone but because the shape put him there. Then the switch arrives with enough hang time for the attacker to set his feet, check his shoulder, and receive already facing the defender.

Four steps, and the duel is step five. By the time step five arrives, the full-back is defending a position that three of his teammates chose for him.

The over-shift problem

Here is the part that separates a coached side from a hopeful one. Every defensive block must shift toward the ball, or the ball-side becomes a numerical disaster. But there is a limit past which the shift stops buying protection and starts manufacturing the far-side isolation, and almost nobody defines that limit explicitly on the training pitch.

The limit is not a distance you can print on a card and expect to survive contact with a match, but the principle behind it is teachable. The far-side full-back should never be more than one covering relationship away from a teammate. If he can be reached by a switch and the nearest teammate cannot arrive before the second touch, the block has over-shifted regardless of how the spacing looks. The defensive line should be compressed toward the ball; the far-side midfielder should not be. That distinction, line compresses and far-side midfielder holds, is the single most valuable thing a coach can install against isolation attackers, and it costs nothing except the discipline to tell one player that his job is to be somewhere unglamorous while the ball is thirty yards away.

The far-side midfielder holding is not the same as the far-side midfielder marking. He is not attached to the winger. He is occupying the space the winger will need to attack, at an angle that makes the outside route long and the inside route crowded. He does nothing at all for most of the possession. Then the switch comes and he is already there, and the attacker who was expecting a solo defender facing him instead sees two bodies and a closed inside lane, and the pass that was supposed to start a one against one has started a controlled two against one in the defending team’s favour.

Attacking the ball in the air

The second intervention against the isolation type happens while the switch is travelling. A long diagonal spends a meaningful amount of time in the air, and that time belongs to the defence if the defence has decided in advance what to do with it.

Most full-backs use it to backpedal, which is understandable and usually wrong. Backpedalling concedes the reception, concedes the body orientation, and concedes the choice of route. The alternative is to press the flight: to close ground while the ball is airborne so that the attacker’s first touch has to be taken under pressure rather than in comfort, and to arrive at an angle that has already removed one of the two routes rather than facing him square and offering both.

This is a risk and it should be described as one. Pressing the flight against a technically excellent receiver means that a good first touch beats you cleanly, and a coach who installs it without installing the cover behind it has simply moved the problem. It only works when the far-side midfielder is holding, because the holding midfielder is the insurance that makes the aggression affordable. That is the upstream rule appearing again in a different costume. The pre-positioned second defender is what converts a reckless action into a coordinated one.

The delay-and-usher fallback

Sometimes the isolation happens anyway. The switch is good, the shape was imperfect, the midfielder was caught in a transition. At that point the full-back is genuinely alone, and the question becomes what a lone defender should try to achieve against a superior athlete in space.

Not the tackle. The tackle against an elite isolation attacker is a low-percentage action with a catastrophic failure mode, and the reason it keeps being attempted is that a defender who does not tackle looks passive to everyone watching. The correct objective is delay and direction: stay on your feet, retreat at an angle that closes the inside lane, keep enough distance that a change of pace cannot immediately eliminate you, and push the sequence toward the byline where the dangerous outcomes are fewer and the recovering teammates have time to arrive.

Reaching the byline is a defensive success against this type, not a failure, provided the box is organized behind it. That sentence contradicts the instinct of almost every supporter and a good many coaches, and it is nonetheless correct. A cross from the byline against a set defence is a substantially lower-value outcome than a shot from the inside lane against a scrambling one. The technical detail of how the retreating duel is actually executed, body shape, distance, the moment the defender is allowed to commit, belongs to the article that owns the one against one duel and is not repeated here.

Type two: the inverted finisher

The inverted finisher is a different animal with a superficially similar shape. He also starts wide. He also faces a full-back. But his objective is not the flank, it is the inside lane and the shooting angle at the end of it, and everything he does on the touchline is in service of getting to a place that is not the touchline.

Mohamed Salah is the reference example and the plan specific to him sits in his own counter blueprint. The type in general is defined by a single geometric fact: the attacker wants to move from a low-value area to a high-value one, and the route between them passes through a zone that a full-back cannot cover alone without exposing something else.

This is where the most repeated line in wide defending comes from and where it goes wrong. The line is that inverted wingers are predictable, so they should be easy to stop. The premise is true. The conclusion does not follow, and understanding why is the most useful thing a defender can learn about this type.

Why predictability does not equal solvability

Prediction is only valuable when the predicted action can be denied without opening a worse one. That is the test, and against an inverted finisher a lone full-back cannot pass it.

Stand inside, angled to close the cut, and the inside route is genuinely difficult. You have also opened the outside lane and the run behind your inside shoulder, and both of those are live threats against this type because a competent inverted attacker keeps them live specifically to make the inside route affordable. Stand outside, angled to protect the flank, and you have handed him the lane he wanted in the first place.

The full-back is on a fork with no good branch. He can be beaten in the way that hurts most or beaten in the way that hurts slightly less, and the difference between them is not large enough to build a plan on. Which means the plan cannot be built on the full-back at all, which is the upstream rule again, arriving from a different direction.

The three-player resolution

Against the inverted type the answer is a geometry, not a stance. Three players share the job and each has a defined piece of it, and when any one of the three is missing the fork reopens.

The full-back’s piece is proximity and patience. He holds a distance close enough that the attacker cannot receive and turn unopposed, far enough that a single touch cannot eliminate him, and he does not commit to a side until the attacker has committed to a direction. His stance is deliberately neutral, which feels wrong to defenders who were taught to show one way, and which is only survivable because of the other two players.

The covering centre-back’s piece is the inside lane, and this is where most sides lose these sequences. The instinct of a centre-back watching a wide duel is to hold the defensive line, because holding the line is the trained default and because stepping out of it feels like abandoning the offside trap. Against an inverted finisher, holding the line is exactly wrong. The relevant space is not behind the line, it is the diagonal corridor between the full-back and the centre-back, the corridor the attacker intends to run into after his first touch takes him inside. The centre-back’s job is to occupy that corridor early enough that the cut has nowhere to arrive, which means dropping and narrowing rather than holding and squaring.

The near-side midfielder’s piece is the entry pass. He does not press the passer and he does not mark the winger. He positions himself so that his body shadow makes the direct pass into the winger’s feet unattractive, forcing the ball wider, later, or into a worse body position. This is the least visible job on the pitch and it decides more wide sequences than any tackle. A pass that arrives half a second later, one yard wider, and slightly behind the attacker’s preferred hip is a different pass, and the whole sequence downstream of it is different.

Three players, three jobs, one closed fork. Take away any of them and the plan collapses back into a lone full-back guessing.

Which stance should the full-back take?

Neutral, until the attacker commits. Against an inverted finisher the full-back’s stance is a delaying device, not a decision, and the decision itself is made by the covering centre-back’s lane position and the midfielder’s shadow. A full-back who picks a side early has resolved the fork in the attacker’s favour.

The broader question of when a defending side should deliberately show a wide attacker inside and when it should show him outside is a genuine tactical decision with arguments on both sides, and it is not answered here. It belongs entirely to the article that owns the inside-or-outside decision, which treats it as the standalone problem it is. This guide’s contribution is narrower and prior to it: whatever you choose to show, the choice is only meaningful if a third player closes the option you opened.

Type three: the transition runner

The transition runner breaks the pattern of the first two types because his threat does not depend on beating a defender at all. It depends on the defender not being there.

Son Heung-min is the reference example and the specific plan sits in his own counter blueprint. The type is defined by what it needs: a turnover, a defensive line that is high or unbalanced at the moment of the turnover, and a first pass that arrives quickly enough that the defence cannot reorganize. Given those three inputs the transition runner does not need to beat anybody. He needs to be running before the defenders start running, and he needs the pass to find him.

Against a settled defence this type is often the least dangerous of the four. That is not a criticism of the players who fit it, several of whom are also excellent in settled play; it is a description of where the type’s marginal value comes from. A side that spends ninety minutes in organized possession against a compact block will get less out of a transition runner than out of a combination attacker, and a side that plays with a high line against one will pay for it repeatedly.

The defensive answer is in your own possession

This is the type where the counter-plan mostly happens while your team has the ball, which is a strange sentence and a true one.

Three things matter and none of them is a defensive instruction in the conventional sense. The first is rest defence: the shape your side holds while attacking, specifically how many players are positioned to defend a turnover and where they are. A side that attacks with both full-backs high and no covering midfielder has decided to lose every transition, and no amount of defensive coaching will recover that decision after the ball is lost.

The second is the location of your turnovers. Losing the ball in the opposition half with your structure intact is survivable. Losing it in your own half while your structure is stretched is what feeds this type. Which means the counter-plan includes instructions about where to take risks with the ball and where not to, and a coach who has never framed possession decisions as defensive decisions is missing half of the plan against transition runners.

The third is the first five seconds after the loss. Not the full press, which most amateur sides cannot sustain, but the immediate delay: one player whose only job is to slow the first pass, applied instantly rather than tidily. The transition runner’s threat is time-dependent in a way the other three types are not, and a two-second delay on the first pass is often the difference between a shooting chance and a recovered shape.

Line height against the transition type

The line height question is where the transition runner exerts his real influence, because he changes it for the whole match without touching the ball.

A high line against a fast transition runner is an invitation, and everybody knows it. A deep line against him is safer and costs you territory, midfield compactness, and the ability to press, which are not small things to surrender. The workable answer is a variable line rather than a fixed one, with the trigger defined by the state of the ball rather than by the phase of play: high when your press is organized and the ball-carrier is under real pressure, dropped the moment the ball-carrier can lift his head.

That sounds obvious written down and it is difficult to execute, because it requires the entire back line to read the same cue at the same time and to trust that the others read it too. It is worth rehearsing precisely because it is difficult. A back four that drops together on a defined cue removes the transition runner’s input more reliably than any individual assignment ever will.

Type four: the combination attacker

The fourth type is the one most often misclassified, because he looks like the first type and behaves like a midfielder.

The combination attacker does not want an empty flank and a lone defender. He wants a crowded area and a partner, because his threat is built on the exchange rather than the duel: the give and go with the overlapping full-back, the third-man run behind a defender who stepped to the ball, the short pass into a midfielder that opens the angle he then attacks. Bukayo Saka is the clearest reference example, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sits partly in this family and partly in the first, because his close control lets him beat pressure rather than space, which is closer to a combination profile than to an isolation one even though the surface impression is of a dribbler.

The defensive error against this type is the one that follows directly from misclassifying him. A coach who reads him as an isolation attacker will double him, which is precisely what he wants, because the second defender who arrives has left a partner free and the combination is now easier rather than harder.

Defending an exchange rather than a carry

Against a combination attacker the defensive unit is not the full-back plus a helper. It is the full-back plus everyone whose space the attacker intends to use, which usually means the near-side midfielder, the near centre-back, and often the holding midfielder as well.

The organizing principle is different from the other three types. Against isolation you deny the space. Against the inverted finisher you close the lane with a third player. Against the transition runner you control the moment. Against the combination attacker you defend the passing angles rather than the man, which means the near defenders hold their positions instead of stepping, and the discipline required is the discipline not to react.

That is a hard thing to coach because it looks like inaction. A defender who holds his position while a combination unfolds ten yards away feels like he is doing nothing, and if the combination succeeds anyway he will be blamed for it. The alternative, stepping to the ball on every exchange, produces exactly the vacated spaces the type is designed to attack, and it produces them repeatedly and predictably.

The specific answer is a staggered rather than flat near-side shape. The full-back holds the width, the near midfielder sits inside and slightly behind rather than beside him, and the centre-back covers the diagonal. The stagger means that every short exchange runs into a defender who is already in the receiving space rather than into a gap between two defenders who are level with each other. It is not glamorous and it does not produce turnovers that look impressive. It produces sequences that end in a harmless recycle, which is the actual objective.

How do you tell which type you are facing?

Watch two or three matches and ask what happens immediately before he receives in a dangerous position. If his team switches the ball to him, he is an isolation attacker. If he receives wide and moves inside, an inverted finisher. If he receives after a turnover, a transition runner. If he receives short and gives it back, a combination attacker.

The classification is not permanent and it is not exclusive. Most elite wide attackers carry a primary type and a genuine secondary, and the strongest of them can operate as all four depending on what the match offers. The classification is still worth doing, because the primary type tells you which upstream intervention pays and which is wasted effort. A plan built to deny isolation against a combination attacker is not a partial success, it is a resource allocation that made the opponent’s job easier.

The winger type matrix

This is the reference artifact for the whole cluster, and every single-subject article beneath this guide uses its vocabulary. Read it as six columns of one argument: what the type needs, how you remove the need before the duel, what the duel looks like when it happens anyway, who the second defender is and where he stands, what the goalkeeper changes, and what the plan gives away.

Four rows, four different plans, four different concessions. A coach who can fill this table for the opponent he faces on Saturday has a plan. A coach who cannot has a hope.

The concession column is the one to read twice. Every plan here surrenders something specific, and the surrender is not a flaw in the plan, it is the plan. Defending is a resource allocation problem with a fixed budget, and a plan that claims to concede nothing has simply not been examined closely enough. Naming the concession in advance is what allows a coach to accept it calmly at half time instead of panicking and abandoning a plan that was working exactly as designed.

What transfers across all four types

Four types, four plans, and a small number of principles that hold regardless of which one you are facing. These are the parts worth teaching to a squad before the specific opponent is known, because they are the substrate every specific plan sits on.

The reception is a defensive event

A wide attacker who receives the ball in comfort, facing forward, with his body already set and his first touch unpressured, has won a contest that most defences never realized they were in. Every one of the four plans above contains an intervention at the moment of reception, and the interventions differ, but the principle does not: the entry pass is contestable and most sides do not contest it.

Contesting it does not mean intercepting it. Interceptions against good teams are rare and chasing them is how sides get pulled apart. It means degrading it: making the pass later, wider, flatter, behind the hip, into the wrong foot, or under pressure. A degraded reception costs the attacker a touch, and a touch is a great deal. It is the difference between an attacker who is facing your goal with the ball settled and an attacker who is still controlling it while your second defender arrives.

Support is a position, not a run

The second half of the upstream rule deserves its own treatment because it is the single most common structural failure in wide defending at every level below the elite, and it is common at the elite level too.

A recovering second defender arrives behind the play, on the wrong side, at speed, unable to change direction, and his arrival is frequently worse than his absence because it commits a body to a place the attacker has already left. A pre-positioned second defender does not need speed, does not need a tackle, and does not need to do anything at all if the attacker declines the route he is covering. He simply stands in the place the sequence wants to go, and the sequence goes somewhere less dangerous.

The cost is that pre-positioning requires a player to be somewhere unhelpful to the attacking phase for long stretches. That is a real cost and it should be acknowledged honestly. A near-side midfielder who holds a covering position instead of pushing up to support the attack is a player subtracted from your own build-up. Whether that trade is worth making depends on the opponent and the state of the match, which is a coaching judgment rather than a rule. What is not a judgment is the mechanics: if you want the second defender to matter, he has to be there before the ball is.

The wide midfielder decides more matches than the full-back

At amateur and semi-professional level this is the highest-return coaching point available, and it is almost never made.

When a side is beaten repeatedly down one side, the analysis in the changing room usually concerns the full-back. The video usually shows something else: a wide midfielder who has recovered ball-side rather than goal-side, arriving in a position where he can neither tackle nor cover, having run a considerable distance to be useless. He is not lazy. He is running hard in the wrong direction, because nobody has ever told him what the right direction is.

The right direction is inside and behind. A wide midfielder recovering toward the touchline is duplicating the full-back and covering the least dangerous route. A wide midfielder recovering into the inside channel is covering the route that leads to a shot, is available to receive the pass-off if the attacker beats the full-back inside, and is in a position to press the cutback. It is the same amount of running for a completely different outcome, and it is the cheapest defensive improvement most sides have available to them.

Do not judge the plan by the duel

The last transferable principle is an evaluative one, and it matters because plans are abandoned for the wrong reasons more often than they fail.

If your plan against an isolation attacker is working, you will still see him beat your full-back sometimes, because he is an elite professional and that is what elite professionals do. The measure of the plan is not whether the duel is ever lost. It is where the sequence ends, how often it produces a shot from a valuable position, and whether your shape survives. A plan that concedes six crosses from the byline and no shots from the inside lane is a plan that worked, even though the crowd spent ninety minutes shouting at the full-back.

Conversely a plan can look excellent and be failing. A full-back who wins three tackles in a match against a combination attacker may be winning them because he is being drawn into duels the opponent is happy to lose, while the actual damage is happening in the space he vacated. Counting duels is one of the more reliable ways to reach a wrong conclusion about wide defending, which is why the scouting method that separates signal from noise in wide sequences treats the duel record as one of the last things to look at rather than the first.

Who each type is hardest for

The same wide attacker is a different problem for different sides, and matching the type against your own structural weaknesses is how a coach decides where to spend preparation time.

Hardest for a back four with attacking full-backs

The isolation attacker, without much competition. A side whose full-backs contribute heavily to the attack has by definition reduced its rest defence and lengthened the recovery distance on both flanks, and the isolation attacker exists to punish exactly that. He is also hardest for sides that shift as a rigid unit, because a rigid unit over-shifts by construction and the switch finds the isolation every time.

The transition runner is the second problem for the same side and for the same reason. High full-backs and a high line are the two conditions he needs, and a side that plays with both has agreed in advance to the terms of the contest.

Hardest for a deep block

The combination attacker. This is the type that a low block does not solve, and the fact that low blocks are widely believed to solve wide problems is one of the more persistent errors in coaching conversation. A deep, compact block removes space behind, which removes the isolation attacker’s input and the transition runner’s input. It does not remove the combination attacker’s input, because his input is a crowded area, and a low block is a machine for producing crowded areas.

Against a deep block the combination attacker’s exchanges shorten, the third-man runs get shorter, and the entries come through gaps that exist precisely because eleven players are compressed into a small space and no compression is perfect. A side that drops deep against a combination attacker has not defended him, it has changed the address of the problem.

Hardest for a back three

The inverted finisher, which will surprise people who believe a back three is the structural answer to wide threats. A back three with wing-backs gives you an extra covering body in the wide areas and a natural spare centre-back, and against an isolation attacker that is a genuine advantage. Against an inverted finisher the arithmetic is less friendly, because the wing-back is defending a larger area than a full-back would, the wide centre-back is pulled into the corridor the attacker wants, and pulling him there is the first move in stretching a back three horizontally.

The fair verdict on the back three question is that it improves the worst case and worsens the average case against wide threats, and which of those matters more depends entirely on the opponent’s type and on whether your wing-backs can actually defend. That is treated in more detail below in the debate section, because it is one of the positions that circulates as settled truth and is not.

Six arguments about wide defending, settled

Certain positions circulate constantly in conversation about defending wingers, and most of them contain a real observation attached to a wrong conclusion. Each one gets a mechanism and a verdict here, because a coach who cannot answer them will eventually have one of them shouted at him by a supporter, a chairman, or one of his own players.

“Modern full-backs cannot defend”

The observation behind this is real: full-backs are selected and developed with a heavier weighting on attacking output than was the case in earlier eras, and training time spent on overlapping runs and delivery is training time not spent on retreating duels. That is a genuine trade and it has consequences.

The conclusion is wrong for a structural reason. Full-backs today defend a fundamentally harder problem than their predecessors did, not because the individuals are worse but because the attacking structures around them are better at manufacturing isolation and because the rules and the pitch conditions favour the attacker more than they used to. A defender who is asked to defend a large area alone, against an opponent who chose the moment and the angle, in a shape that put him there, is failing at a task that was substantially easier a generation ago.

The verdict: the individual standard has not collapsed, the task has inflated. Which is good news for a coach, because task inflation is a structural problem and structural problems are the ones you can actually fix. Fixing the shape improves your full-back’s defending more than any amount of individual work on his body position, and the individual work only starts paying once the shape stops leaving him alone.

“Inverted wingers are predictable, so they are easy to stop”

The observation is true and the conclusion does not follow, for the reason set out earlier. Prediction is useful only when the predicted action can be closed without opening a worse one, and against an inverted finisher a single defender cannot pass that test.

Something more subtle is also going on. Elite inverted attackers maintain the alternative route deliberately, not as a fallback but as a functional part of the primary threat. The occasional run outside is not evidence that he is unpredictable; it is the thing that makes the inside cut work, because it forces the defender to respect a route he would otherwise ignore. Removing the outside run from a defender’s concerns would make the inside cut much easier to stop, which is exactly why the attacker keeps making it.

The verdict: predictability is an asset to the defence only in proportion to the cover available. With three players coordinated, knowing what he will do is worth a great deal. With one, it is worth nothing, and the pundit who says he is easy to read is describing an asset his team cannot spend.

“A back three solves wide problems”

The observation is that a back three creates natural overloads in wide areas and gives the flank an extra covering body. That is real and it is the reason so many coaches reach for it when facing a strong wide attacker.

The conclusion is oversold, for three reasons. The wing-back defends more territory than a full-back and therefore arrives in duels having covered more ground and with less support behind him in transitional moments. The wide centre-back who steps out to cover leaves a horizontal gap in a back three that is harder to close than the equivalent gap in a back four, because there is one fewer body to redistribute. And a back three against a side with genuine width on both flanks can be pinned into a back five, at which point you have not gained a covering defender, you have lost a midfielder.

The verdict: a back three is a reasonable response to a single dominant isolation attacker and a poor response to two dangerous wide attackers, an inverted finisher with a good overlapping full-back beside him, or an opponent who plays through the middle. Change your shape because of what the whole opponent does, never because of one name.

“Doubling up always works”

The observation is that two defenders beat one, which is arithmetically obvious and tactically incomplete.

Doubling has a cost and the cost is paid somewhere else, always. Two defenders committed to one attacker means a spare attacker somewhere, and against a well-organized side the location of that spare attacker is not random, it is chosen. The switch that finds the far-side attacker is the direct counter to a permanent double, and against a side that circulates the ball well a permanent double is a standing invitation.

There is also a timing problem. The double only works if the second defender is present at the moment of the first touch. A second defender who arrives during the carry has produced a temporary two against one that the attacker can beat with one pass, and has left his own zone in the process.

The verdict: double conditionally, never permanently. The conditions worth defining in advance are the zone, the phase, and the state of the ball. Doubling in the defensive third when the ball arrives from a settled position is usually sound. Doubling in the middle third in transition is usually a mistake. And a double that is pre-positioned rather than arriving is not really a double at all, it is a shape, which is what you actually wanted.

“A winger who does not track back should be exploited automatically”

The observation is that a wide attacker who contributes little defensively leaves his full-back exposed, and that this is an available advantage.

It is available, and exploiting it is less automatic than it sounds. Pushing your full-back high to attack the space costs you rest defence on precisely the side where the opponent’s most dangerous attacker is stationed, which is the trade the opponent wants you to make. Sides that leave a wide attacker high are often doing it deliberately, accepting a defensive cost in exchange for a permanent outlet, and a coach who charges into the invitation without adjusting his rest defence has walked into a plan rather than exploited a weakness.

The verdict: exploit it with a different player. Overload the space with a midfielder, an inside forward, or a rotating attacker rather than by sending the full-back on a fifty-yard round trip. You get the same numerical advantage in the attacking third without vacating the space that feeds the counter. How much the opponent’s defensive contribution should influence your plan is a judgment, and the honest answer is that it should influence which player attacks the space, not whether you attack it.

“One against one defending is a dying art”

The observation is that fewer defenders appear to be technically excellent in isolated duels than a generation of supporters remembers.

Two things are confounded here. The first is that memory selects for the defenders who were good at it and quietly deletes the many who were not, which makes any comparison across eras unreliable. The second is that the duel occurs far less often as a clean, isolated, both-players-set event than it used to, because attacking structures now manufacture the duel under conditions that favour the attacker, and because the defender’s technical objective has changed from winning the ball to controlling the direction.

The verdict: the art is not dying, the exam has changed. What is genuinely less coached than it should be is the retreating duel: the skill of staying on your feet, controlling distance, and steering an opponent toward the least dangerous outcome without ever attempting a tackle. That skill is entirely teachable, it transfers to every level of the game, and it is the specific subject of the article on defending inverted wingers in the one against one.

The job description, position by position

The plans above only work when each player knows his own piece of them. This section is written so a coach can lift the relevant paragraph and give it directly to the player it concerns.

The full-back

Your job against every type is the same in principle and different in execution: control the distance, protect the direction your teammates have not covered, and do not resolve the duel alone.

Against an isolation attacker your work begins while the switch is in the air. Either you press the flight, which requires the far-side midfielder to be holding behind you, or you retreat at an angle that closes the inside and accept the outside. What you must not do is stand square and wait, which offers both routes and lets the attacker choose at full speed.

Against an inverted finisher your stance stays neutral longer than feels comfortable. You are not trying to stop him, you are trying to make him commit while your centre-back arrives in the corridor and your midfielder shades the entry. Committing early is the single most common error against this type and it is nearly always punished.

Against a transition runner you do not defend the man in front of you, you defend the space behind you, which means turning and running early and accepting that you will look passive for two seconds. Against a combination attacker you hold the width and refuse to be pulled into short exchanges, because every step you take toward the ball opens the space the exchange was designed to reach.

What is not asked of you, in any of the four plans: the tackle. Tackling an elite wide attacker in an open field is a coin flip with a bad downside. You will make tackles, and they should be the ones that arrive because the attacker was already directed into a dead end, not the ones you went looking for.

The wide midfielder

Your recovery line is inside and behind, always. Not ball-side, not along the touchline, not level with your full-back. Inside and behind.

When your side is in possession and the opponent’s isolation attacker is stationed on your flank, your resting position matters more than your attacking contribution on most possessions. Holding a covering position while your team attacks is unglamorous, it will not appear in any summary of the match, and it removes an entire category of danger before it exists. This is the position where the upstream rule is actually implemented on the pitch.

When the ball comes to your flank, your first job is the entry pass, not the ball-carrier. Shade the lane into the wide attacker’s feet rather than pressing the passer. Pressing the passer feels active and usually just moves the ball one player sideways; shading the lane changes the pass that eventually arrives.

The centre-back

Two jobs, and they conflict with your instincts.

The first is the inside lane. When a wide attacker cuts inside, the corridor between the full-back and you is the dangerous space, and your instinct is to hold the line and stay square with your partner. Against inverted finishers that instinct is wrong. Drop and narrow into the corridor early. You will occasionally look like you have broken the line, and the alternative is a shot from a high-value area.

The second is the byline decision. When a wide attacker reaches the byline, you have to choose between attacking the near-post delivery and holding the cutback zone, and you cannot do both. The default should be the cutback zone, with the near post owned by the goalkeeper and the front-post defender, because cutbacks generate better chances than near-post crosses and because a centre-back drawn to the near post opens the exact area the cutback targets.

The goalkeeper

Your adjustments are type-specific and they are more significant than they are usually made out to be.

Against an isolation attacker who reaches the byline, your priority is the near post first and then the cutback lane, and your starting position should be set early rather than adjusted late, because the delivery from that position arrives fast and flat. Against an inverted finisher your reference is the near post as he cuts onto his stronger foot, set narrower and earlier than you would against an orthodox winger, because the angle he shoots from is more central than his starting position suggests. Against a transition runner your start position is a sweeping one whenever the line is high, and your decision to leave the area has to be made early or not at all. Against a combination attacker your danger is the low drive from a short exchange and the cutback that follows it, which means staying on your line longer and trusting the defenders in front of you.

The amateur and youth version

Everything above assumes a squad that can hold a shape, communicate under pressure, and execute a pre-positioning instruction that requires a player to stand somewhere counterintuitive for long periods. Most sides cannot do all of that, and a plan that requires all of it will fail in a way that looks like the players’ fault when it is actually the plan’s.

So here is the reduced version, and it is not a watered-down version, it is a prioritized one.

If you can only install one thing

Install the wide midfielder’s recovery line. Inside and behind, on both flanks, every time. It requires no additional fitness, no new shape, no communication under pressure, and no player standing still while the ball is elsewhere. It is a change to the direction of running that a player is already doing.

The return on this is larger than any other single intervention available to an amateur side, because the wide midfielder recovering ball-side is close to universal at that level and because it converts the most common conceding pattern in amateur football, the winger who goes inside and shoots or squares, into a much less productive one.

If you can install two things

Add the cap on the block’s shift. Give the far-side wide player a maximum: he does not cross the far edge of the centre circle when the ball is on the opposite flank. That is a crude rule and crude rules are the ones that survive Sunday morning. It will occasionally leave you slightly light on the ball-side, which is a smaller cost than being switched into a permanent isolation.

Note what this rule protects. It does not protect the far-side full-back from ever being one against one; it protects him from being one against one with nobody within twenty yards, which is a different and much more survivable situation.

If you can install three things

Add the retreating duel, and coach it as a distinct skill rather than as a moral instruction to defend better. The full-back does not tackle. He stays on his feet, keeps a distance he could maintain if the attacker accelerated, and retreats at an angle that closes the inside. The success criterion he is given is not winning the ball, it is reaching the byline area still in front of his opponent.

Changing the success criterion is what makes this stick. A full-back who has been told for years that a good defender wins tackles will keep diving in, no matter what you say about body position, because he is being measured on the wrong thing. Measure him on direction control and the technique follows.

The age-group question

For youth sides the two types worth teaching against are the isolation attacker and the transition runner, and they should be taught in that order.

The isolation type comes first because the intervention is positional and positional understanding is the thing youth football is for. A twelve-year-old who understands that his positioning while the ball is on the other side of the pitch determines what happens when it comes back has learned something that will still be true when he is thirty. The transition type comes second because it introduces the idea that defending happens during your own possession, which is a genuinely difficult concept and worth introducing early.

The inverted finisher and the combination attacker are harder to teach usefully at young ages, because both require coordinated multi-player timing that young sides cannot yet hold, and attempting them produces confusion rather than understanding. There is also a developmental argument against over-coaching wide defending in the youngest age groups at all: a young full-back learning to defend one against one, losing, and learning again is doing something valuable, and structuring the problem away from him before he has met it removes the learning.

The ten-minute classification method

An analyst preparing an opposition report does not have unlimited time, and the classification above is worth doing quickly and confidently rather than slowly and exhaustively. Here is the method, and it takes about ten minutes per wide attacker once you know what you are looking for.

Step one: find six receptions in dangerous positions

Not sixty. Six. Take two matches, ideally against different types of opponent, and find six occasions where the attacker received the ball in a position from which something dangerous plausibly followed. Ignore everything else, including the highlights.

The temptation is to watch every touch. Resist it, because most touches are neutral and watching all of them produces a general impression rather than a classification. Six meaningful receptions is enough to identify a primary type in almost every case, because primary types are strongly expressed.

Step two: rewind five seconds from each

This is the whole method. For each of the six receptions, rewind five seconds and watch what happened before the ball arrived. You are answering one question: what created this reception?

If the answer is a switch or a long circulation that dragged the block, you are looking at an isolation attacker. If the reception is wide and the first movement is inward toward a shooting position, an inverted finisher. If the reception followed a turnover, a transition runner. If the reception was short and was immediately returned or followed by a run into a combination, a combination attacker.

Count the six. Four or more of the same kind is a clear primary type. A three-two-one split means he is genuinely mixed, which is useful information rather than a failure of the method, and it tells you the plan needs to cover two inputs rather than one.

Step three: identify who creates it

The last step separates a decent report from a useful one. For whichever type dominates, name the teammates who produce the input.

For an isolation attacker, that means identifying who plays the switch, from where, and after how many circulating passes. For an inverted finisher, it means identifying who plays the entry pass into his feet and from which angle. For a transition runner, it means identifying who wins the ball and who plays the first pass. For a combination attacker, it means naming the two or three players he combines with most and the areas the exchanges happen in.

That name is your intervention target. This is where the upstream rule stops being a principle and becomes a specific instruction to a specific player about a specific opponent, and it is the difference between a report that gets read and a report that changes what happens on Saturday.

What misleads analysts on wide sequences

Three errors recur and each one produces confident wrong answers.

The first is judging the duel by its outcome. A full-back who is beaten while executing the plan correctly, in a situation the plan accepted, has not made an error, and marking him down for it teaches the squad to abandon the plan. The evaluation has to be against the instruction rather than against the result, or you will systematically punish the behaviours you asked for.

The second is over-weighting the spectacular. A wide attacker who beats three players and shoots wide will dominate the impression left by a match, while eleven harmless receptions that ended in a recycle leave no impression at all. The eleven are the plan working. The one is the tax.

The third is using a single fixture as evidence. Wide attackers are more match-to-match variable than almost any other position, because their output depends heavily on what the opponent’s structure offered them. A performance against a side that over-shifted badly tells you about that side, not about him.

What the plan costs, honestly

Every approach described in this guide has a bill attached, and a coach who has not read the bill will be surprised by it in the sixtieth minute.

Capping the block’s shift costs ball-side density. There will be possessions where the opponent works a two against one on the near flank and you will watch it happen and know that a full shift would have prevented it. That is the price of not being switched into isolation, and it is usually the right price to pay, but it is a price.

Pre-positioning the near midfielder costs you a player in your own attacking phase. Your build-up will be one body lighter on that side, your attacks down that flank will be less frequent, and if you are chasing a match this becomes an argument for changing the plan rather than persisting with it.

Dropping the line against a transition runner costs territory and press height, which means more sustained pressure and more time defending. Sides that drop deep to remove one threat frequently concede from something else entirely, and the honest framing is that you have traded a low-frequency high-value threat for a high-frequency lower-value one. That is often a good trade and it is never a free one.

Holding positions against a combination attacker costs turnovers. Your side will win the ball less often in that zone because it is not stepping to it, and a squad that measures itself on aggression will feel like it is defending badly while defending well. This is a communication problem as much as a tactical one, and it is worth telling the players in advance what success is going to look like so that they do not diagnose themselves as passive.

The six worked examples

Six wide attackers anchor this cluster, and each has his own article beneath this hub. What follows is hub-depth treatment only: the type, the input, and the single most useful thing to know before opening the specific plan. The detailed counter-plans, the weakness anatomies, and the duel-level technique all live downstream.

Vinicius Junior: the isolation reference

A Brazilian left-sided attacker who came through Flamengo before Real Madrid, and the cleanest available illustration of the isolation type. The input is space, a lone defender, and an arrival that lets him set his body facing forward. His acceleration over the first few strides makes a static duel close to unwinnable for any defender on earth, which is why the plan against him is not a duel plan.

The most useful thing to know is that his side manufactures the isolation deliberately and systematically. It is not a by-product of good play, it is the design, and it has the four-step structure described earlier in this guide. That means it has four interruption points, which is four more than a plan built around finding a fast enough full-back. Mohamed Salah: the inverted reference

An Egyptian left-footed attacker operating from the right, with a career through Basel, Chelsea, Fiorentina, Roma, and Liverpool, and the reference case for the inverted finisher. The input is the inside lane and a shooting angle, and the profile is defined as much by the second threat, the run into the space behind the full-back’s inside shoulder, as by the cut itself.

The most useful thing to know is that the two threats support each other, which is why knowing what he intends to do is not the advantage it appears to be. The run in behind is what forces a full-back to respect depth; respecting depth is what makes the inside lane available. Defend one and you feed the other, unless a third player is present. Bukayo Saka: the combination reference

An English left-footed attacker developed at Arsenal and operating from the right, and the clearest example of the combination type in this cluster. He carries an inverted threat as a genuine secondary, which is exactly why he is worth studying as a classification exercise: the surface impression suggests one type and the input requirement points to another.

The most useful thing to know is that the sequences he damages sides with usually involve at least one teammate and often two, and that a defensive plan which isolates him from those teammates does more than a plan which doubles him. Son Heung-min: the transition reference

A South Korean attacker with a career through Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen, and Tottenham, genuinely two-footed to an unusual degree, and the reference for the transition type. Two-footedness matters here in a way it does not for the other five, because it removes the defensive shortcut of steering an attacker onto his weaker side, which is the shortcut most retreating defenders are trained to use.

The most useful thing to know is that his most dangerous work depends on conditions your own team controls: where you lose the ball, how many bodies you left behind when you lost it, and how quickly the first pass after the turnover is contested. Rafael Leao: the long-stride isolation variant

A Portuguese left-sided attacker developed at Sporting CP before Lille and Milan, tall, and covering ground in long strides rather than short ones. He belongs to the isolation family, and the variation matters for the defender’s execution rather than for the classification.

The most useful thing to know is that stride length changes the geometry of the retreating duel. A defender retreating against a short-stride dribbler can adjust distance in small increments and can afford to be marginally wrong about the moment of acceleration. Against a long-stride runner the distance closes in larger units, the moment of acceleration is harder to read because the stride pattern does not change as visibly, and a defender who is a yard too close is eliminated in a single stride rather than gradually. The practical adjustment is a slightly deeper starting distance and an earlier turn. The counter blueprint for this profile treats it in full.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia: the crowd-beating hybrid

A Georgian left-sided attacker with a career through Dinamo Tbilisi, Rubin Kazan, Dinamo Batumi, and Napoli, and the subject who most rewards careful classification because the obvious reading is wrong.

He looks like an isolation attacker and produces sequences that resemble one. The input requirement is different. His close control lets him beat pressure rather than space, which means he functions in traffic where the isolation type does not, and a defensive plan that removes his space without removing the density around him has not removed his input. That places him closer to the combination family in terms of what the plan must deny, while the duel-level execution against him resembles the isolation case. The counter blueprint for this profile treats the hybrid explicitly rather than forcing him into one box.

Facing two dangerous wide attackers at once

Almost every framework for wide defending assumes one problem. Good sides have two, and the two-flank case is not simply the one-flank case doubled, because the resource that solves one flank is the resource that was going to solve the other.

The first decision is which one you concede. This is not defeatism, it is arithmetic: you do not have the bodies to pre-position on both flanks and also defend the middle, and a plan that pretends otherwise will produce a stretched shape that concedes centrally, which is the worst outcome available. Pick the flank you protect properly and give the other one a lighter treatment.

The selection criteria, in order. Protect the flank where the opponent’s attacker is the isolation or inverted type, because those two produce higher-value chances than the transition or combination types when they succeed. Protect the flank where your own defender is weaker, which sounds obvious and is frequently reversed by coaches who put the support where the good defender is because it feels like reinforcing success. And protect the flank the opponent actually uses, which is a question the video answers rather than the reputation.

The second decision is what the lighter treatment looks like, and the answer is that it should be shape rather than attention. The unprotected flank gets a defensive winger with a clear recovery instruction, a centre-back who knows he will occasionally be the only cover, and a goalkeeper who has been told which deliveries to expect from that side. It does not get a second body committed, because committing that body is what reopens the flank you decided to protect.

The third decision is the in-match one: when to switch the protection. The trigger should be defined in advance rather than improvised, and the cleanest trigger is repeated entries rather than a single dangerous moment. Two dangerous sequences from the unprotected flank inside a short window is a reason to move the support. One spectacular moment is not, because moving the support after one moment is exactly the reaction an opponent with two strong flanks is trying to provoke, and a side that swings its protection back and forth in response to individual events ends up protecting neither.

How do you defend a side with strong attackers on both flanks?

Choose one flank to protect properly and give the other structure rather than bodies. Protect the side with the higher-value attacker type and the weaker defender, define in advance the trigger that would move your support across, and refuse to react to isolated moments, which is what the two-flank structure is built to provoke.

The crossing question

Every wide defensive plan eventually collides with the same tension. Closing the inside lane opens the outside; closing the outside hands over the inside. Coaches resolve this badly in both directions, either by defending the cross so aggressively that the cut inside becomes free or by conceding crosses so freely that the box is under permanent bombardment.

The resolution is that a cross is not a single thing, and treating it as one is where the reasoning fails. There are at least three deliveries that get called a cross and they carry completely different risk.

The delivery from a deep position, wide of the box and level with or behind the penalty spot, is the least dangerous of the three. It arrives with time for the defence to set, from an angle that suits defenders more than attackers, and it produces a low conversion rate almost everywhere. Conceding this is not a defensive failure and a plan should be willing to concede a lot of it.

The delivery from the byline, cut back rather than swung in, is a different proposition entirely. It arrives behind the defensive line, into an area attackers are running toward and defenders are running away from, and it produces the most valuable chances available from wide areas. This is the delivery that plans should be built to prevent, and it is the reason the covering centre-back’s default should be the cutback zone rather than the near post.

The delivery from a half-space, struck early by an attacker who has cut inside, is not really a cross at all in defensive terms. It is a pass into the box from a shooting position, it can be bent away from the goalkeeper, and it carries the additional threat that the same body position could have produced a shot. This is what you are actually preventing when you close the inside lane.

Once the three are separated the tension mostly dissolves. Concede the first freely, prevent the second structurally, and close the third with the three-player geometry. The plan that looks contradictory when a cross is treated as one category is coherent when it is treated as three.

What about the sheer volume of crosses?

A legitimate concern that should not be waved away. A side conceding fifty deliveries will concede goals from some of them regardless of individual quality, because volume converts eventually and defenders make errors under repetition. High volume carries a real cost even when each delivery is unthreatening.

The practical answer is that volume is controlled by the recovery rather than by the duel. Deliveries pile up when the attacking side retains the ball after a blocked or cleared cross and immediately delivers again. The intervention is the second-ball structure: who is positioned to collect the clearance, whether the front players hold a position that allows an exit, and whether the block re-forms before the next delivery. Sides that concede fifty crosses usually concede eight sequences that produced six deliveries each, and the fix is in the exit from the box rather than in the duel on the touchline.

Does dropping deeper reduce a winger’s threat?

Partly, and not for the reasons most coaches expect. Dropping deep removes the space behind, which disables the isolation attacker’s acceleration advantage and the transition runner’s primary input. It does not disable the inverted finisher or the combination attacker, and against those two it can make matters worse.

The mechanism is worth being precise about. A deep block compresses the vertical space and expands the horizontal problem, because eleven players in a small vertical band cannot also be spread across a wide one. Against a combination attacker that is close to ideal conditions, since he wants a crowded area and short exchanges, and a compressed block supplies both. Against an inverted finisher the deep block reduces the distance he has to travel to reach a shooting position, which is a curious side effect of depth that a coach should think through before reaching for it.

Where dropping deep does clearly pay is against pure pace. If the entire threat rests on running into space that no longer exists, depth is the correct answer and it is close to a complete one. The mistake is generalizing from that case, and it is a common one, because the pace case is the most visible and the most frightening.

The honest verdict: depth is a specific tool with a specific application, not a general solution to wide threats. Reaching for it by default against every strong wide attacker is how sides end up defending for eighty minutes against opponents they could have engaged higher.

The touchline winger

Not every dangerous wide attacker cuts inside. Some hold the width relentlessly, stay on the touchline, and manufacture their threat through repeated one against one attempts from a fixed starting position, and this profile is defended differently enough to deserve its own treatment.

The first thing that changes is the value of showing him outside. Against an inverted finisher, showing outside is a concession that buys you the more valuable lane. Against a touchline winger, showing outside is showing him toward the thing he was going to do anyway, which is not a defensive plan, it is an agreement.
