None of that is trivial and any coach who skips it is working with one hand tied.

What video does not do is change the outcome of the duel itself, and the reason is mechanical. He does not need separation created by pace; he creates it by making the defender’s own body move in the wrong direction.

The correct first-defender behaviour is to stop when he stops, hold a distance that keeps the ball outside reaching range, stay square rather than turning the hips, and treat the objective as buying three seconds rather than winning anything.

The support requirement is a screening player rather than a second challenger, and the distinction is the whole plan. The screen removes the pass, not the man, positioning himself in the highest-value passing lane so that the manipulator’s options reduce while the first defender simply survives. Sending a second body at a low-speed manipulator is worse than useless, because he now has two sets of weight to read inside the same small area, and eliminating two players with one action is exactly what his craft is for.

The concession is possession, time, and territory. The plan lets him keep the ball for long periods in areas that look uncomfortable, and it is the correct trade.

Class three: the contact dribbler

The mechanism is the deliberate seeking of physical contact, which the attacker converts into one of two outcomes: separation, because the defender’s balance is disrupted more than his own, or a free kick, because the contact occurred in a position where the referee’s reading favours him.

Players in this class are usually built low and strong, with an exceptional relationship between their centre of gravity and their base, which is why contact that would unbalance a taller player leaves them intact. The skill is not toughness; it is the ability to remain in control of the ball while absorbing a collision that the defender cannot.

The defender’s primary error is meeting the contact. A defender who braces, leans in, or initiates the shoulder is entering a physical exchange that the attacker has selected precisely because he wins it. He is also, in the modern refereeing environment, the player whose action will be judged.

The correct first-defender behaviour is contact avoidance combined with proximity. That combination sounds contradictory and is not: the defender stays close enough to restrict the ball’s routes but keeps his own body out of the collision, defending with position and with the feet rather than with the torso. Hands low and in front, never on the attacker.

The support requirement is a second defender arriving from an angle that does not create a second contact opportunity, which in practice means from behind and slightly across rather than square from the side. A second defender who arrives shoulder-first has handed the attacker a second body to use.

The concession is possession and a proportion of free kicks in the middle third, which the plan accepts as the price of not conceding them near the penalty area.

Class four: the one-directional specialist

The mechanism is the purest demonstration of the prediction gap in football. The attacker executes a single, known action, repeatedly, better than it can be denied. Every defender knows it. Every crowd knows it. It works anyway.

The reason it works is that denying a single action completely requires a body position that is fully committed to that action, and full commitment opens the alternative. An attacker who has practised the alternative even moderately then takes it, and the defender who committed everything to denying the known move is beaten by a move he is not even good at. So the defender cannot commit fully, and a defender who has not committed fully cannot deny an action executed at elite quality.

The correct first-defender behaviour is deliberate under-commitment: a stance weighted perhaps sixty to forty toward the known action rather than ninety to ten, accepting that the known action will sometimes succeed, in exchange for never being beaten by the alternative and never being beaten badly.

The support requirement is structural rather than individual, and it is the only class where the answer genuinely lives outside the duel. The known action leads to a known destination, so the destination can be pre-occupied. A defender cannot stop the move; a covering player standing in the place the move leads to can make it worthless.

The concession is that the attacker completes his action regularly and the plan tolerates it, because the plan is designed to make completion unproductive rather than to prevent it.

He is primarily a contact dribbler with elements of the low-speed manipulator, and the combination is what made him difficult. The two-footed balance problem

George Best played principally at Manchester United and was genuinely two-footed with exceptional balance under contact.

He is a contact dribbler in mechanism, but with a feature that separates him from most of the class: he absorbed contact without seeking it, which meant defenders who avoided the collision gained nothing while defenders who initiated it lost their own balance. That combination is unusually difficult, because the standard contact-dribbler answer of contact avoidance does not by itself produce an advantage.

The transferable lesson from the duels he faced concerns the defensive team rather than the individual defender: sides that reduced his influence did it by denying his receptions and by congesting his receiving zones, which is a structural answer rather than a duel answer.

The purest single action in the game’s history

The principles that transfer across all five

The defender’s balance state outranks his information

Across four of the five classes, a second defender who arrives from the wrong angle actively worsens the situation. Square from the side gives a contact dribbler a body to use. Toward the ball gives a low-speed manipulator two sets of weight to read. Beside rather than ahead gives a speed dribbler a wider lane. The only class where a fast, direct second defender is uncomplicatedly good is the speed dribbler, and that is the class most coaches are unconsciously planning for.

The instruction that generalizes is: the second defender arrives from behind the first defender’s line, never from the side, and he arrives at the destination rather than at the ball.

Congestion is not the same as proximity

A dangerous area can be full of defenders without any of them being inside the attacker’s working range, and that is the target state. Sides that make an area congested by putting bodies close to the ball have handed several of these classes exactly what they want. Sides that make it congested by occupying the destinations while holding distance have removed the value of the dribble without offering material to work with.

The concession must be chosen in advance

Every one of the five plans concedes something specific, and the plans that fail are almost always the ones where nobody decided what to concede. A defender who has not been told what he is allowed to give up will attempt to prevent everything, which means engaging, which means being eliminated. The plan must survive the player who executes it

The fifth principle is the one most often skipped and it is the reason good plans fail on Saturday. A containment scheme that requires a full-back to override thirty years of coached instinct, a midfielder to ignore the ball for eight seconds, and a centre-back to hold a position while an opponent runs at him is a scheme with three compliance risks, and compliance risk is not a soft consideration.

The practical discipline is to reduce the plan to the smallest number of instructions that still capture most of the value, and then to check each one against the specific player who will execute it. A front-footed, competitive full-back will not hold a two-metre distance for ninety minutes no matter how well the reasoning is explained, and a coach who insists is choosing to be right rather than to be effective. The options are to change the player, to change the shape so the assignment falls to someone else, or to accept a version of the plan that the available player will actually run.

The second half of the principle concerns explanation. Instructions that contradict instinct survive contact only when the player understands the arithmetic behind them, because under pressure he will fall back on reasoning rather than on rules. Telling a defender to stand off produces compliance for twenty minutes. Telling him that his stepping in is what creates the two-versus-one behind him produces compliance for ninety, because he now owns the decision rather than obeying it.

Is containment a realistic objective at all?

It can reliably reduce the value of his actions and it cannot reliably prevent them. The realistic target is that he completes his dribbles into congested destinations rather than into shooting positions, and that no single action removes two defenders. Plans aimed at stopping the dribble itself fail; plans aimed at making completion unproductive succeed often enough to matter.

Who each class is hardest for

The same dribbler is a different problem for different sides, and the mismatches are predictable enough to plan around. This is the part of the classification that changes selection rather than instruction.

The speed dribbler is hardest for a side with a high defensive line and slow centre-backs, which is the most common structural mismatch in football, and easiest for a side that defends deep with recovery pace. He is also hardest for a full-back who defends by anticipation, because anticipation against a speed threat means stepping, and stepping means the lane opens behind. Against a compact, deep block with a covering centre-back who reads well, he is the least dangerous of the five classes, which is the opposite of most supporters’ intuition.

The delivery dribbler is hardest for a side with a weak penalty-area defence, regardless of how good its wide defenders are, and easiest for a side with tall, organized central defenders and a goalkeeper who commands his area. He is the class where the wide duel matters least and the box matters most, and a side that reads that correctly can neutralize him with players who never face him.

Which defender profile handles each class best?

The second claim is that modern rules manufacture dribblers, meaning that today’s one-versus-one specialists are products of protection rather than of ability. A side that is behind needs the ball, and every one of the five containment plans concedes possession deliberately. That is the tension and it cannot be resolved by pretending otherwise; something has to give.

The wrong resolution, and the near-universal one, is to keep the containment structure and add aggression to the duel, meaning defenders start engaging and second defenders start committing. This produces exactly the eliminations the plan was built to avoid, at the moment when conceding again is most damaging.

The right resolution is to move the whole scheme up the pitch rather than to change its internal rules. Press the supply higher, contain higher, and accept that duels now occur in the middle third where a beaten defender costs territory rather than a chance. The containment behaviour inside each duel stays identical. The risk is taken structurally, in the line height and in the number of players committed ahead of the ball, which is a risk a coach can size and control, rather than in the duel, which is a risk he cannot.

The second adjustment is selection. Chasing a match against a dribbler is one of the situations where a substitution aimed at the defensive assignment is worth making even while chasing, because a compromised containment defender in the wide area is a permanent leak and no amount of attacking commitment compensates for it.

The third adjustment is the concession list, which should be rewritten rather than abandoned. Teaching the classes to players

Do not teach five classes to a squad. Teach the class you are facing this week, in one sentence, plus the concession and the second-defender rule.

The reason is that players under pressure retrieve one instruction, not a framework, and a defender trying to remember which of five categories applies is a defender who is thinking during the duel, which is the state the whole article argues against.

The exception is defenders themselves, meaning the full-backs and the centre-backs, who benefit from understanding the framework across a season because it changes how they prepare and how they self-assess. Teach them the five over months, not before a match.

Building the habits that serve all five

Three habits transfer across every class and should be permanent training content rather than opponent-specific preparation.

The first is arrival balance, meaning the approach and deceleration into a stationary set, trained in isolation, repeatedly, with no duel attached. It is the single highest-return defensive habit in the game and it takes ten minutes per session.

What should a young defender be told before facing one?

Teach arrival balance first and repertoire never. Give him one instruction for the duel, one concession he is allowed to make, and a clear statement of where his cover will be. Coach before and after, not during, because a two-second decision cannot absorb a shouted instruction, and expect him to be beaten regularly without treating it as failure.

Why the move works even when everyone knows it

The prediction gap deserves one more pass, because it is the finding most likely to be disbelieved and the one with the most practical consequence.

The mechanism has three parts and they compound.

The first is the response-time floor. A defender’s ability to change his own direction is bounded by the physics of moving his own mass, and that bound does not shrink with knowledge. The second is the alternative. A defender who commits to denying a known action has, by committing, opened the other one. So knowledge produces a choice between two losing positions: commit and be beaten by the alternative, or stay balanced and be beaten by the known action at elite execution quality. The third is the false-information layer. The great dribblers are, without exception, producing signals that do not correlate with their intentions, whether through disguise, through identical preparatory movements, or simply through moving faster than a read can be converted into a response. Facing a famous opponent

There is a psychological dimension to this category that gets treated as soft and is not, because it changes measurable behaviour.

The first is giving him a job description that does not include winning. A defender told to prevent a famous opponent from doing anything has been given an impossible task and will fail at it visibly. A defender told to hold two metres, stay goal-side, and concede the sideways carry has been given a task he can complete on every occasion, and completing tasks is what produces settled behaviour.

The second is naming the concession publicly to the whole side, so that the containment defender’s apparent passivity is understood by his teammates rather than criticized by them. Much of the pressure that makes defenders engage comes from inside their own team.
