The first flaw in the argument is that the information was never missing. Everyone in the sport knew the move, in detail, without any data at all. Coaches could describe the receiving position, the touch, the carry line, and the target corner from memory. A tracking system would have quantified something that was already qualitatively certain, and quantification adds value only when it changes a decision. It did not, because the decision was already being made correctly: sides chose which concession to prefer, and they chose it on the basis of accurate knowledge.

The second flaw is more interesting and it concerns what data can and cannot do about a created zone. Positional data describes where players and the ball have been. It is excellent at identifying the arc as a high-value shooting location, and modern shot-value models do exactly that and would have flagged it immediately. What data cannot do is make the arc cheaper to defend. The cost of pre-positioning a body there is a structural fact about having eleven players and a pitch, and no model changes it. Analysis can tell a coach precisely how much the concession costs. It cannot tell him how to avoid paying.

The third flaw is that the counters that worked were already known and already used. Pre-positioning an inside defender and denying the reception through a collective press are not modern inventions. They were available, they were deployed by the sides equipped to deploy them, and they had the same costs then that they would have now. What has changed since is the frequency and confidence with which sides press, which is a genuine improvement and which would have reduced the number of receptions rather than the danger of each one.

The defensible verdict is therefore no, with a qualification that matters. Modern analysis would have improved the framing of the decision, letting coaches price the two concessions accurately rather than intuitively, which is a real benefit. It would not have produced a solution, because the problem was never epistemic. This is a useful general lesson about the limits of analytical preparation, and the method for turning observation into an actual deliverable plan, including the point at which analysis stops adding value, is developed properly in the scouting articles later in the series.

The One-Dimensional Charge

A recurring criticism holds that a player whose threat runs through a single repeated action is by definition limited, and that the move’s fame is therefore evidence of narrowness rather than quality. This deserves a serious answer rather than a defensive one.

The charge is partly accurate as a description and wrong as an evaluation. It is accurate that the threat was concentrated: a defense that successfully removed the inside carry removed a large proportion of the danger, which is not true of a forward whose threat is distributed across aerial ability, depth running, link play, and finishing from multiple angles. Concentration is a real property and it has real consequences, chief among them that the plan against a concentrated threat is easier to write. Every coach knows what to prepare for, which is a genuine advantage for the defending side and should be counted as one.

Where the charge fails is in the inference that concentration equals ease of defending. The table above is the refutation: knowing the action and having a cheap response to it are different things, and the second does not follow from the first. A concentrated threat is easy to prepare for and hard to stop when both of its available continuations are dangerous. A distributed threat is hard to prepare for and often easier to stop in any individual sequence, because each individual continuation is cheaper.

There is also a specific tactical point that the charge misses. A repeated action performed at an elite level does not merely produce its own outcomes; it distorts the defensive shape around it, and the distortion produces value that never shows up as an action by the player himself. A full-back who cannot be left alone requires help. Help comes from the centre. The centre is therefore lighter, and the side’s other attackers operate against a defense that is one body short in the most important area of the pitch. That value is real, it accrues to teammates rather than to the player, and no measure of individual output captures it.

The honest trade to name is the one the concentration imposes on the attacking side rather than the defending one. A player whose threat is this specific requires the ball delivered into a particular area with a particular body orientation, which constrains how the side builds. Teams accommodated that constraint willingly, which tells you what they thought of the return, but the constraint was real and it is the accurate version of the limitation the charge is groping toward. Block Height: The Real Decision Behind the Duel

Everything discussed so far treats the duel as a given. The most consequential decision a coach makes is upstream of it, in how high the side defends, because block height determines how often the duel occurs and in what condition.

A high block with an aggressive press attacks the supply. It reduces the number of clean receptions substantially, forces the ball into the wide area earlier and less accurately, and frequently produces receptions with the attacker facing his own goal. Those are the receptions a defense wants. The price is the space behind the defensive line, and against a side that can play over the press into a wide runner, that space is precisely where a wide player with a change of pace wants the ball. The press must therefore be genuinely collective and genuinely fast, or it converts one problem into a worse one.

A mid block concedes the build-up, contests the entry, and tries to make the wide reception happen further from goal. This is the compromise most sides chose and it is defensible. The duel still occurs, but it occurs thirty strides further out, which means the diagonal arc the attacker wants to reach is further away, which means the carry is longer, which means the covering defenders have more time. Distance is the cheapest defensive resource available and the mid block buys it.

A low block refuses the duel’s most dangerous version by ensuring that when the wide player receives, there are already six or seven defenders between him and the goal. The reception happens freely and the carry inside runs into congestion rather than into an empty arc. This genuinely reduces the threat and it is the reason underdog sides frequently look more comfortable in this fixture than better sides do. The price is territorial: sustained pressure, repeated deliveries, corners, and the accumulating probability that something eventually falls. It also concedes the shot from further out, which is a lower-value shot and is nonetheless a shot from a specialist striker of the ball.

The decision rule is the same one that runs through this whole series. Choose the block you can staff. A high press without the athletic profile to sustain it produces the worst outcome available. A low block without disciplined spacing produces congestion that is not actually congested. And whichever is chosen, the choice should be made explicitly, communicated, and held, because the failure mode that ruins more matches than any of the three is a block that drifts between heights while different players operate on different assumptions.

The Collective Support the Duel Requires

Four things behind and around the full-back determine whether he is in a difficult duel or an impossible one, and none of them is his to control.

The first is the near centre-back’s stepping rule, discussed above and worth restating as an instruction rather than a description: decide before the match whether he steps to the arc, and if he does, decide who fills the space he leaves. The two workable answers are that the centre-back steps and the nearest midfielder drops into the vacated channel, or that the centre-back holds and the full-back’s retreat angle supplies whatever pressure the strike receives. The unworkable answer is silence.

The second is the tracking midfielder. When the full-back is beaten and the carry goes inside, a midfielder should be arriving on the carrier’s outside shoulder, not to tackle but to narrow the strike angle and to be present for the cutback if the attacker declines the shot. The commonest failure is a midfielder who tracks the ball’s original position rather than its destination, arriving behind the play. The coaching point is to track the space the carry is heading for, which requires anticipating the inside route, which is the one situation where anticipation genuinely helps.

The third is the far-side structure. A side that has committed a body to the inside of one flank is underloaded on the other, and the attacking side will find it. That is not a reason to abandon the counter; it is a reason to prepare the far side deliberately, usually by accepting the switch, dropping the far full-back early, and defending the resulting cross with numbers rather than trying to prevent it. Sides that run the counter without preparing the far side end up conceding from the flank they thought they had protected.

The fourth is the rest-defense shape while the side has the ball. A wide player of this profile is at his most dangerous immediately after a turnover, when the full-back is advanced, the near centre-back is covering the wrong channel, and the arc is not merely unoccupied but unreachable. The instruction that follows is a possession instruction: on this flank, the full-back does not advance beyond the halfway line without a covering rotation, and the deepest midfielder stays on this side of the pitch. That costs attacking width and it is the correct price.

Was He Effective Forced Onto the Other Foot?

The question of what happened when the inside route was genuinely denied deserves a careful answer, because it is where the honest limitation sits and because both extreme answers are wrong.

The overstated version says that a strongly one-footed wide player is neutralized once the strong-foot route is closed, and that a defender who succeeds in forcing him onto the weaker side has won. That is too strong. Forcing the outside route did not neutralize anything; it redirected the threat into a cutback, which is why the duel was unsolvable in the first place. A defender who has forced the outside has achieved a redirection, not a victory.

The understated version says the weaker foot was irrelevant. That is also wrong, and the reason is about what the weaker foot enables rather than what it produces. A wide player who can strike with either foot forces the defender to defend two shooting positions. A player whose strike comes only from the inside route lets the defense treat the outside route as a delivery problem rather than a shooting problem, which is a meaningful simplification. Covering defenders can position for a cross rather than for a shot, the goalkeeper can hold his line rather than shading, and the near centre-back’s decision about stepping becomes easier. Those are real reductions and they should be counted.

The accurate summary is that the weaker foot was a delivery tool rather than a finishing tool, and that this was a genuine and specific limitation with a genuine and specific defensive value attached. A side that forced the outside route consistently converted the duel from a shooting problem into a crossing problem, which is a materially better problem to have. It did not convert it into a good problem, and coaches who sold their full-backs on the idea that showing him outside was a solution were overselling.

There is also a development point buried here that matters more to a young player than to any coach. The reason to build a genuinely useful second foot is not to score with it. It is to prevent the defense from simplifying its problem, because the moment a defender can rule out one of two outcomes, everything downstream of him gets easier. That is the honest case for weak-foot work, stated in terms of what it denies the opposition rather than what it adds to a highlight reel.

How to Practice the Duel

The session that rehearses this material has to teach a decision, not a technique, and the constraint design has to make the decision unavoidable.

Start with a wide channel, an attacker receiving from a server, a full-back, and two small goals: one placed to represent the arc, positioned inside and level with the top corner of the penalty area, and one representing the cutback, placed on the byline side. The attacker scores by playing into either. The defender’s task is to concede the cheaper one, which the coach prices explicitly, usually by making the arc goal worth double. Within a few repetitions the defender discovers that he cannot protect both, stops trying, and starts choosing. That discovery is the entire session and it cannot be delivered by explanation.

The second progression adds the pre-positioned second defender with one hard rule: he may not move toward the ball. Nothing else changes. Players learn very quickly why the rule exists, because the first time the second defender drifts ball-side the attacker uses the vacated inside route and the full-back, who had loaded outside on the assumption of help, is stranded. Make the failure visible by pausing and showing it rather than by shouting, since this is a comprehension problem rather than an effort problem.

The third progression adds the near centre-back and the stepping rule. Play with a full defensive line, run the carry into the arc repeatedly, and rehearse both answers on alternating repetitions: centre-back steps with midfielder dropping, then centre-back holds with the full-back cutting the angle. Do not tell the players which is better, because neither is; the objective is that they experience both and that the side then chooses one and knows what it costs.

The fourth progression is the reception-denial version, which is a different session and should be run on a different day, because it involves the whole side. Play from a build-up start, designate the supplying player, and score the defending side on whether the ball reaches the wide area cleanly rather than on what happens afterward. Scoring the intermediate outcome rather than the final one is what teaches a press its actual objective.

The small-squad version drops the fourth progression entirely and runs the first three in a single channel with rotating roles. The poor-pitch version is unaffected, since every constraint is positional and none depends on a smooth surface, though the arc goal should be widened if the surface is bad enough that shooting accuracy becomes noise.

How do you coach a defender to accept losing a duel?

By pricing the outcomes so that conceding the cheaper one scores as success. A defender rewarded only for stopping everything stands square and loses both routes. A defender rewarded for steering the attacker into the prepared concession commits early, and early commitment is what makes the covering structure usable.

The Reception Map: Four Positions, Four Different Problems

Treating the duel as a single event obscures the fact that it began from at least four different receiving positions, each of which produced a different threat and demanded a different response. A plan built on the average of the four defends none of them properly.

The first was the deep wide reception, taken level with or behind the halfway line, facing forward, with the full-back thirty strides away. This is the reception that looks least dangerous and is often the most, because it is the only one in which the attacker begins with the ball already under control and space to accelerate into. A defender retreating against a carrier who is already moving cannot set his body at all; he is running backwards, and running backwards means he cannot load either route. The correct response is not a defensive one. It is to have a midfielder engage the carry before the full-back is reached, delaying it long enough for the defender to stop, turn, and set. Sides that let deep carries run at a retreating full-back had already lost the duel before it appeared on screen.

The second was the standard flank reception, taken level with the edge of the defending side’s final third, with the full-back set and the touchline behind. This is the duel everything above describes and it is the one the geometry table addresses directly.

The third was the half-space reception, taken inside the flank in the channel between full-back and centre-back, usually after a rotation that pulled the full-back wide. This one is worse than the standard version because the carry to the arc is shorter, the near centre-back is already the primary defender rather than the covering one, and the full-back arriving from outside is chasing rather than jockeying. The answer is structural: the near centre-back has to pick up the reception rather than waiting for the full-back to recover, and the defensive midfielder has to fill behind him. Sides that treated the half-space reception as the full-back’s responsibility conceded it repeatedly.

The fourth was the reception in the box itself, taken with a defender tight and the byline close. Counterintuitively this was the least dangerous of the four, because the arc is unreachable from there, the shooting angle is poor, and the only high-value continuation is a cutback that a well-positioned defense can cover. The instruction here is to deny the cutback lane with the body and to decline the tackle entirely, since a tackle attempt inside the area against a player with a change of direction risks the worst outcome available for a marginal gain.

The practical upshot for a coach is that the flank instruction has to be zone-specific rather than global. Engage the deep carry with a midfielder, run the chosen concession in the standard position, defend the half-space reception with the centre-back rather than the full-back, and refuse to engage inside the box. That is four sentences and it is deliverable in a meeting, which the global version never is.

The Transition Case

Every scenario above assumes a set defense. The most dangerous receptions occurred when there was not one, and the reason is that all the counters described depend on pre-positioning, which is exactly what a turnover eliminates.

The sequence is familiar. The defending side has the ball, the full-back on that flank has advanced, the near centre-back has drifted across to cover a different channel, possession is lost, and the ball arrives at a wide player with the arc not merely unoccupied but unreachable by anybody. There is no pre-positioned inside defender because he is thirty strides up the pitch. There is no reception denial because the reception has already happened. There is no stepping rule because the centre-back who would step is the only defender within range and stepping leaves nothing behind him.

The response is a possession-phase decision and it has to be made before kickoff. On the flank this player occupies, the full-back does not advance beyond the halfway line without a covering rotation, and the deepest midfielder holds a position on that side of the pitch rather than following the ball. Both instructions cost attacking output, and the cost is the point: a side unwilling to pay it has decided, whether it knows this or not, to concede the most dangerous version of the duel several times per match.

There is a second transition instruction that costs nothing and is frequently omitted. When possession is lost in the attacking half, the nearest player to the ball delays rather than pressing, because a press that fails releases the pass into the flank immediately and a delay that succeeds buys the four strides the full-back needs to get back and set. Most sides coach the opposite by default, and against this profile the default is wrong.

A coach can diagnose whether he has a transition problem or a duel problem in twenty minutes of review. Count the sequences that produced a shot or a delivery from the flank and note how many began from a settled shape. If most began from turnovers, rewriting the duel instruction will change nothing, because the duel instruction was never in effect.

Measuring the Duel Honestly

Defenders in this fixture are measured on the wrong things, and the measurement error produces bad coaching decisions in both directions.

Tackles won is close to meaningless here, because ball recovery was never a realistic objective and pursuing it produces the exact behaviors the plan forbids. Times beaten is worse than meaningless because it prices every loss equally, so a defender beaten toward the prepared concession scores identically to one beaten into the unprepared one, which is the opposite of the truth. A defender who has steered the attacker outside eight times has executed the plan; a defender who has been beaten inside twice has broken it; and a raw count says the first defender lost eight duels and the second lost two.

The measures that reflect the plan are four and none requires a data budget. First, receptions denied, meaning entry passes into the flank that did not arrive or arrived behind the receiver. Second, direction of concession, recorded simply as prepared or unprepared. Third, strike location, recorded as inside the arc or outside it, since forcing the shot a few strides wider or further out is the marginal victory the defender is actually playing for. Fourth, cutbacks conceded and what happened to them, because a side that chose the outside concession must know whether it is defending the consequence adequately.

Track those four and the review meeting changes character. Instead of a full-back watching clips of himself being beaten, he watches a count of how often he steered the attacker where the side wanted him steered, which is a job he can succeed at. That difference is not cosmetic. A defender who believes his job is impossible defends passively, and passive defending in this duel concedes everything.

The Amateur and Youth Version

Almost everything above assumes a squad, a training week, and players who can hold a pre-agreed rule under pressure. Most coaches have less, so the material needs a version that survives contact with a Sunday side and an under-fifteen team.

For an amateur side facing a much better wide player, the priority order is short and the first item is counterintuitive. Do not attempt the pre-positioned inside defender, because it requires the second defender to hold a position while his instincts scream at him to move toward the ball, and that discipline is not available without rehearsal. Attempting it and failing is worse than not attempting it, since the full-back will have loaded outside on the strength of help that never materializes.

Instead, choose the outside concession explicitly, tell the whole side, and defend the cutback with numbers. This is the cheapest workable plan available to a side with limited training time. It requires one instruction to the full-back, which is to load inside and stay on his feet, and one instruction to everybody else, which is that when the ball reaches the byline area, two players occupy the space in front of the penalty spot rather than watching the ball. That second instruction is the one that actually saves goals and it is the one amateur sides most reliably omit.

Add one more item: the deepest midfielder does not cross the halfway line while the opposition has the ball on that flank. That single rule handles most of the transition problem without requiring anybody to understand rest defense as a concept.

For a youth side the emphasis shifts, because the objective is development rather than the result. The item worth the most time is the retreat angle, taught as a habit: once beaten, cut inside the carry toward the shooting position rather than chasing the ball. It is trainable in a small space, it transfers to every defensive situation a player will face, and it is the single most useful thing a young defender can learn from this duel. The second item is early body commitment, taught by removing the option to stand square, which a coach can do simply by scoring the exercise so that a defender who has not committed by the time the ball arrives concedes a point automatically.

What should not be done with a young defender is to isolate him repeatedly against a much better opponent and let him fail without explanation. He will conclude that he is a poor defender, which is false, and the conclusion is expensive because it changes how he defends for years. Explain the two routes, explain that both are dangerous, tell him which one the side is conceding, and then hold him to the two things he controls. That is a fair assessment and it is also the accurate one.

Selecting the Personnel for the Concession

Once a coach has chosen which outcome to concede, the personnel question follows, and it is answered badly more often than the tactical question is.

If the side is conceding the outside route and defending the cutback, the qualities that matter shift away from the full-back and toward two other players. The near centre-back becomes the most important defender on the pitch, because his job is to defend a delivery from the byline while a runner arrives late from midfield, and that requires a specific profile: comfortable defending facing his own goal, able to judge a ball arriving behind him, and disciplined enough not to be drawn toward the ball carrier. The second is whichever midfielder is responsible for the late runner, and the quality required there is not athleticism but the willingness to track a player he cannot see while the ball is somewhere more interesting.

If the side is conceding the inside route and defending the arc, the personnel emphasis moves again. The near centre-back now needs the opposite quality, which is the decisiveness to step out and press a carrier in an area he is not accustomed to defending, plus enough recovery speed to make that step survivable. The defensive midfielder needs to be positionally reliable rather than aggressive, because his job is to occupy the space the centre-back vacates rather than to win anything. And the goalkeeper’s starting position becomes a live selection consideration, since a keeper who sets deep by habit is a poor fit for a plan that concedes strikes from the arc.

The full-back selection itself deserves comment because sides consistently got it wrong in a predictable direction. The instinct is to pick the fastest available defender, on the reasoning that pace covers errors. Against this profile pace covered very little, because the duel was decided within two strides of the first touch and recovery speed only mattered after the duel was already lost. The qualities that helped were a short first step, genuine lateral movement, the discipline to stay on the feet, and the temperament to be beaten repeatedly without escalating into tackles or fouls. The last of those is the most underrated and the hardest to assess in training, because it only reveals itself when a defender is losing.

There is one more personnel consideration that sits outside the back line entirely. A side that intends to deny the reception needs the player directly opposite the supplier to be capable of pressing alone and holding a cover shadow, which is a demanding and specific job. If that player does not exist in the squad, the reception-denial counter is not available, whatever the tactical merits, and a coach who selects it anyway has chosen a plan his players cannot run.

Scouting the Duel Before the Match

The preparation question is separable from the tactical one, and doing it properly changes what the coach can promise his players.

What matters is not a compilation of successful actions. It is the distribution of receiving positions and the conditions under which each one occurred. The useful clip window is three passes before the reception and three after, since anything shorter loses the build-up that created the position and anything longer buries the mechanism in noise.

Record four things per reception. First, the receiving zone from the four described earlier, because the answer differs by zone and a plan that does not distinguish them is four plans averaged. Second, the body orientation at reception, since a receiver already facing forward is a different problem from one who must turn, and the same player produces both depending on how the opposition pressed. Third, whether the defending side was set or in transition, because if most dangerous sequences begin from turnovers then the duel instruction is not the lever. Fourth, and most neglected, what the near centre-back did, since the stepping decision determines whether the arc was ever reachable.

The output of that exercise is a short list of conditions rather than a description of qualities. Against a profile like this the list is usually brief: he received facing forward, with the full-back isolated, with the near centre-back holding rather than stepping, following a rotation that pulled the full-back wide or following a turnover. Every one of those is something the defending side controls, which is the entire value of the exercise, and it is why analysis framed around conditions produces a plan while analysis framed around qualities produces a warning.

The commonest analytical error here is over-weighting the sequences that produced goals. Those are memorable and unrepresentative, and building a plan from them means preparing for the version of the opponent that occurs least often. The more useful sample is every reception, including the many that produced nothing, because the ratio between them is the actual measure of whether a given defensive arrangement was working.

The Set-Piece Consequence

Any plan that concedes territory near the box has a dead-ball dimension, and it is routinely left out of the discussion.

Two of the responses in the geometry table generate fouls. A defender who chases the carry into the arc and arrives late will foul, because his only remaining option once beaten is contact. A defender defending the outside route who arrives at the byline half a stride behind will foul, for the same reason. Both fouls occur in areas where a stationary ball is genuinely dangerous, and a side that concedes several of them has converted a series of open-play sequences it might have survived into a series of rehearsed attacks it probably will not.

This produces a specific instruction that belongs in the pre-match briefing rather than being left to instinct. Contact should be priced by zone before kickoff: a foul in the wide middle third is acceptable and sometimes useful, a foul in the wide final third is expensive, and a foul in the area between the corner of the penalty box and the top of it is close to unforgivable, because that is the delivery zone where a specialist does the most damage. Defenders who receive that pricing defend three areas three different ways, which is what a coach wants. Defenders left to their instincts apply one setting everywhere.

There is a second-phase consideration as well. A side defending deep against sustained wide pressure will concede corners, and corners produce second balls, and second balls fall into the space in front of the box that the retreating side has just vacated. The rest-defense arrangement at set pieces therefore matters more in this fixture than in most, and the standard answer of leaving one player forward has to be weighed against the cost of a second-phase strike from the edge. In-Game Management: What to Change and When

Plans erode, and knowing which repair to make is worth as much as the original plan.

The first diagnostic is direction of concession. If the attacker is repeatedly beating the full-back in the direction the side did not choose, the problem is body commitment and the fix is individual: the full-back is standing too square or setting too late. This is repairable with a single instruction and usually improves within minutes.

The second diagnostic is arrival time in the arc. If the carry is reaching the shooting position with nobody within two strides, the problem is the stepping rule, and the fix is to switch to the other answer: if the centre-back has been holding, have him step and drop the midfielder in behind. Making this change once, deliberately, is far better than leaving two defenders to negotiate it silently.

The third diagnostic is the supply. If the receptions are frequent, clean, and facing forward, the problem is upstream of everything else, and no amount of adjustment in the back line will help. The available responses are to push the block up and contest the entry, which costs space behind, or to add the pre-positioned inside defender, which costs central compactness. Both are real changes with real prices and both are better than continuing to lose the duel with a plan that was never in effect.

The fourth diagnostic is discipline. A cautioned full-back in this duel is a different player, and the opponent will know within one sequence. His willingness to engage drops, and his engagement was the only thing making one route expensive. The three defensible responses are to move him to the opposite flank, to change his instruction explicitly to contain-only with a teammate designated to make interventions, or to substitute him. Doing nothing is the common choice and the worst one, because the outcomes it risks are a sending-off or a free reception in the exact area the plan was built to protect.

The last piece of in-game management is knowing when to stop defending the duel at all. A side chasing a goal cannot hold a pre-positioned inside defender, cannot keep a full-back home, and cannot sustain a deep block. Those supports go, and when they go the duel reverts to its unsolvable form. A coach making that change should make it explicitly and tell the back line what has changed, because the failure mode that costs the most is a plan that dissolves gradually while different players continue operating under different assumptions about whether it is still running.

Defending the Concession: The Cutback in Detail

A plan that chooses the outside route has chosen to defend a cutback, and most sides that make that choice then defend it as though it were an ordinary cross. It is not, and the difference is worth a section, because the whole logic of the concession collapses if the conceded outcome is defended badly.
