The answer is that the corridor position handles it, provided the centre-back’s reference is the space rather than the ball. The mechanical instruction that works is a scanning rhythm rather than a positional rule: the far-side defenders check over their shoulder at fixed moments, when the ball reaches the wide player, when the delivery is about to be struck, rather than continuously. Continuous scanning is impossible; rhythmic scanning is trainable.

The second instruction is that the far full-back does not get drawn to the ball side under any circumstances while an attacker of this type is in the box. His job during opposite-flank possession is not to help defend the ball; it is to be a body at the far post.

Why is the far post his own threat?

Because it uses none of the mechanisms the rest of the plan addresses. It happens on the opposite flank, in the blind side of defenders watching the ball, and it is defended by the far full-back and far centre-back rather than by the three players who close the fork.

Transition

The fork assumes a settled defence. In transition none of the three players is in position, the corridor is unoccupied, and the run in behind does not need to be manufactured because the space already exists.

The rest-defence requirement

The specific requirement is that the flank he occupies always has a covering body during your own attacks. If your left-back pushes high, someone covers behind him, and the identity of that someone depends on your structure: a holding midfielder shifting across, a centre-back sliding wide, or a wide player staying back.

There is a second requirement particular to this profile. Because the run in behind is a primary threat rather than a secondary one, your defensive line during your own possession matters as much as your covering numbers. A back line pushed high to compress the pitch while attacking is a back line that concedes a fifty-yard run the moment the ball turns over, and against a profile that starts running before the turnover is complete, that run is frequently uncontested.

The workable compromise is a line that compresses less aggressively on the side he occupies, which produces a slightly staggered back line during your own attacks. That costs you some compactness in your attacking phase and it removes the highest-value transition outcome.

The first pass

One player delays the first pass after a turnover. Not a full counter-press; a single immediate engagement whose only purpose is to prevent a clean forward ball in the first two seconds.

Against this profile the two seconds are worth more than usual, because the run starts early. A defender who is turning and running at the moment the pass is played has a chance. A defender who is still watching the ball when it is played does not.

The player who does the delaying is usually the one who just lost possession, which is a problem, because that player is typically reacting to his own error rather than to the situation. This is worth naming explicitly in the meeting: whoever loses it delays it, immediately, regardless of how the loss happened.

The goalkeeper’s role in transition

When the line is high and a ball is played in behind, the goalkeeper’s decision has to be made during the pass rather than after it. Against a profile with this level of acceleration, a keeper who starts deciding late will arrive at the ball at the same moment the attacker does, inside his own box, which is the worst available outcome.

Decide early, commit fully or not at all, and if not, retreat and set for the one against one rather than hovering.

Set pieces

Their attacking corners and free kicks

He is a genuine box threat at dead balls rather than a marginal one, and the arrival pattern is typically a late one into the space rather than an aerial contest at the front post. Assign accordingly: a marker who tracks the movement rather than a zonal body who holds a spot, and preferably one who is comfortable defending a runner arriving from behind.

The second consideration is the short corner and the resulting delivery from a wide position, which reproduces the crossing geometry with your defence already in the box. A designated player should prevent the short option rather than leaving it to whoever notices.

Your attacking corners and free kicks

Leave two players back rather than one, and position one of them toward the flank he occupies. This costs your attacking threat and it removes the two against one against your goalkeeper that a cleared corner otherwise produces.

The player positioned centrally has the same job as the transition delayer: pressure whoever plays the first pass forward. An unpressured outlet after a cleared corner is a fifty-yard run against a defence thirty yards out of position.

Wide free kicks in your own half

The situation worth rehearsing is the quickly taken restart, which reproduces the reception without any of the shape you have built. One designated player stands over the ball on every free kick in your defensive half until the shape is set, and the near-side full-back does not join a wall or drift toward the ball until then.

The goalkeeper’s job in open play

Four specific responsibilities, each with a defined starting reference.

The near post against the cut inside

The most important adjustment and the one most often got wrong. When an inverted right-sided attacker cuts onto his left foot, the shot comes from a position considerably more central than his starting position suggests, and the angle he shoots from is not the angle a goalkeeper instinctively sets for when the attacker is wide.

The reference is the near post as it stands at the moment of the strike, not at the moment of the reception. In practice that means the keeper sets narrower and earlier than his instinct suggests, and continues adjusting as the attacker moves inward rather than settling once and then reacting.

The specific error is setting for the wide position, then finding that the cut inside has moved the shooting angle before the feet have moved with it. The strike from that angle is frequently placed toward the far corner precisely because the goalkeeper’s weight is still committed to the near side.

The far post on the opposite flank

When play is on the other side, the goalkeeper’s positioning has to account for the far-post arrival, which means starting slightly deeper and more central than he would against a side with no far-post threat, and communicating the arrival to his far-side defenders because he can see it and they cannot.

That communication is the highest-value goalkeeping action in the whole plan, and it is free.

The one against one in behind

Delay rather than rush. Close ground while the ball is not under the attacker’s foot, stop when it is, stay tall, and postpone the commitment, because delay brings recovering defenders into the frame. Rushing produces a finish around him or a foul.

The cutback

Hold the position that covers both posts against a first-time strike, communicate the receiving runner to the covering centre-back, and resist advancing toward the receiving area. Advancing on a cutback is close to indefensible because the shot can be struck early while the keeper is between his line and the ball.

How does a goalkeeper narrow the angle here?

By referencing the shooting position rather than the receiving position. Against a cut inside, set narrower and earlier than instinct suggests and keep adjusting inward as the attacker moves, because the angle at the moment of the strike is far more central than the angle at the moment of the reception.

When the plan fails: the fallback ladder

Each component has a characteristic way of failing and each failure has an answer. Abandoning the plan wholesale because one part broke is the most common in-match error against this profile, and it usually happens at about the fiftieth minute.

Fallback one: he receives cleanly and turns repeatedly

Signal: the entry pass keeps arriving on time, in his preferred body position, and he is facing the full-back with the ball settled.

This is the midfielder’s shadow failing, and there are two causes. If the midfielder is too far from the ball, his shadow is too narrow to matter and the fix is to move him closer, which feels risky and is not. If he is stepping to press the passer, the fix is the instruction rather than the position, and it needs restating explicitly because the instinct returns under pressure.

If the shadow is correct and the entries are still clean, the passer is too free, and the answer is to engage the passer and accept that the lane is open for the two seconds the pass takes to arrive and be controlled. That is the defined switch described earlier, and using it is not an abandonment of the plan.

Fallback two: he keeps arriving in the inside lane

Signal: sequences ending with shots from central positions rather than deliveries from wide.

This is the covering centre-back holding the line instead of occupying the corridor, and it is the most common single failure in this blueprint. The instruction has to be repeated with the permission attached: leave the line, the offside consequences are not your problem, the corridor is the priority.

If the centre-back is executing and the sequences still arrive inside, the full-back is committing outside too early. Move him back toward neutral and accept a slightly later engagement.

Fallback three: the run in behind keeps coming

Signal: repeated balls into the channel behind the full-back’s inside shoulder, arriving before the covering centre-back is set.

Two causes. If the line is too high, drop it, but drop it as a unit on a call rather than allowing individual defenders to drift, because a line that drops raggedly creates the exact gap the run targets. If the line is reasonable and the timing is the problem, the covering centre-back is dropping too late, and the fix is to make his drop pre-emptive rather than triggered: he goes to the corridor when the ball reaches the wide areas, not when the pass is played.

Fallback four: the far post is being attacked successfully

Signal: arrivals at the back post from opposite-flank possession, with the far-side defenders reacting late.

This is a scanning failure and it is fixed with a rhythm rather than an instruction to concentrate. Give the far-side defenders two fixed moments to check their shoulder: when the ball reaches the opposite wide player, and when the delivery is about to be struck. If it persists, the far full-back is being drawn toward the ball side, and the fix is a blunt rule: he does not cross a defined line while the attacker is in the box.

Fallback five: the plan works and you are under siege

Signal: the sequences are ending in wide deliveries as designed, and there are thirty of them, and the volume is starting to convert.

This is a box-exit problem rather than a wide problem. Deliveries pile up when the attacking side retains possession after each one, which means your clearances are being recycled. The fix is at the edge of the box: a player positioned to collect, a defined clearing direction, and a front player holding a position that gives the clearance somewhere to go. Adding another defender to the box makes this worse rather than better.

Fallback six: nothing is holding

The controlled downgrade is a back five, with the wide centre-back occupying the corridor permanently and the wing-back handling the width. This concedes midfield and attacking structure, it removes the need for the three-player coordination that is failing, and it should be described to the players as a change of objective rather than a change of shape.

What you concede on purpose

The wide crossing position

The largest and most constant payment. A plan built to close the inside lane and the channel behind is a plan that leaves the outside route relatively open, which means deliveries from wide positions, in volume, all match.

The number to be comfortable with is high. If your box is organized and your second-ball structure holds, fifteen or twenty wide deliveries is a defensible match against this profile. The instinct to intervene, to send another body toward the flank, is the instinct that reopens the inside lane.

The overlap outside

Closing the inside means the opponent’s own full-back will overlap into the space, and he will deliver from a good position with momentum. This is a genuine escalation of the wide concession rather than a duplicate of it, and it should be handled by the near-side midfielder recovering to the overlapping player once the overlap has committed, rather than by the full-back trying to cover both.

Possession in front of the block

The narrowness required on his side means the opponent will circulate comfortably in front of you, which produces a possession share that looks alarming and matters less than it appears. A side that has the ball for long periods in areas that do not produce shots is not dominating; it is being managed.

A body in your own attack

The near-side midfielder is committed to a defensive relationship rather than to your build-up, which reduces your attacking presence on that side. If you are chasing the match, this becomes a genuine argument for changing the plan, and that decision should be pre-agreed rather than improvised.

What you do not concede

Three things, and they are the reason the concessions above are worth making: the inside lane and the shooting angle at the end of it, the channel behind the full-back’s inside shoulder, and an unowned far post. Every goal this profile generates comes from one of those three, and a plan that holds all three while giving away almost everything else is a plan that survives the match.

The version for a side that cannot run three-player coordination

The honest problem with this blueprint is that it requires three players to hold interlocking positions simultaneously, and most part-time squads cannot do that reliably for ninety minutes. A diluted version of a three-player plan is not a two-player plan; it is a plan with a hole in it.

So for a side that cannot execute it, the answer is a different plan rather than a reduced one, and the different plan is built on a single decision that a lone defender can act on.

Pick a route and defend it properly

The amateur version resolves the fork deliberately rather than avoiding it. Choose to close one route completely and accept the other, and choose based on your own personnel rather than on the attacker.

If your centre-backs are mobile and comfortable defending space, close the inside and accept the run in behind, because the run is then defended by a covering defender who is good at it. If your centre-backs are slow and better in a settled box, close the run in behind, accept the cut inside, and defend the resulting shot with numbers in the lane.

That is a worse plan than the three-player geometry and it is a real plan, which is more than a half-executed version of the better one would be. It also has the advantage of being a single instruction to a single player, which is the kind of instruction that survives the seventieth minute.

Keep the far post

Whatever else you drop, keep the far-post assignment, because it costs nothing. Your far full-back tucks in when the ball is on the opposite flank and does not get drawn toward the ball. That is a positional rule with no fitness cost, no coordination requirement, and no technical demand.

Keep the no-tackle instruction

Also free, also effective. The full-back is judged on whether the sequence ends in a wide delivery rather than on whether he wins the ball, and changing the success criterion is what changes the behaviour.

Keep the midfielder narrow

Even without a full shadowing instruction, a near-side midfielder who simply stands narrower than usual makes the entry pass harder. He does not need to shade a specific lane; he needs to be in the way more often than he would be by default.

Five arguments about defending this profile, settled

“He always does the same thing”

True and useless without cover, which is the whole subject of this article. The prediction is accurate; a lone full-back cannot act on it, because closing the predicted route opens a route that is equally dangerous and equally live.

There is a further point that gets missed. The alternative routes are maintained deliberately, as functional components of the primary threat rather than as fallbacks. The run in behind is what forces a defender to respect depth, and respecting depth is what makes the inside lane accessible. An attacker who genuinely stopped making the run would find the cut inside much harder, which is exactly why it keeps happening.

The verdict: predictability is an asset in proportion to the cover available. With three coordinated players it is worth a great deal. With one, it is worth nothing, and briefing the full-back on it without providing the cover makes his defending worse rather than better.

“A left-footed full-back stops him”

The observation is that a left-footed defender’s natural body shape and stronger foot favour blocking the cut inside.

The effect is real and small, because footedness governs actions that occur after the decisive decisions have been made. It becomes actively harmful when it substitutes for structure, and a coach who selects a left-footed defender and considers the problem solved has left the same fork in place with a marginally better clearing foot on it.

The verdict: a mild preference, never a plan.

“He is only dangerous in one system”

The observation is that his output depends on the structure around him, which is true of every specialized attacker and is not a weakness in itself.

Where it becomes planning-relevant is narrower. The threat requires entries into the right half-space and channel, and a side that cannot generate those entries generates fewer dangerous sequences. That is a statement about how to defend, which is to deny the entries, and it is the reason the near-side midfielder’s job matters so much.

The verdict: the dependence is real and the planning implication is to attack the supply rather than the player, which is what the shadow does.

“Doubling him is straightforward”

Two problems. A reactive double, arriving during the carry, produces a second defender who can be eliminated with one pass while his own zone stands empty, and against a profile whose combination play is strong that is a poor exchange. A permanent double concedes a body elsewhere, and against a side that circulates well the location of the freed attacker is chosen rather than random.

The version that works is the structural one this blueprint uses: the covering centre-back in the corridor is functionally a second defender who cost nothing, because he was going to be on the pitch anyway and his position is a shape decision rather than a commitment.

The verdict: double structurally, in advance, never reactively.

“His threat drops sharply against a deep block”

Partly true, and less than claimed. A deep block reduces the space for the run in behind, which is one of the two threats. It shortens the distance from his receiving position to the shooting angle, which strengthens the other, and it concentrates defenders in the cutback zone, which raises the value of the delivery.

There is also a compaction effect worth naming: a deep block that is compact vertically is frequently stretched horizontally, and the right half-space is exactly where the entry pass into his feet lives.

The verdict: depth helps against one threat and hurts against the other, which is why the recommendation here is a mid-block with the variability located in the covering centre-back rather than in the whole line. Managing the plan during the match

The first twenty minutes: check the supply

The question is where the entries are coming from, because the plan’s weight shifts depending on the answer.

If entries are arriving into his feet from the half-space, the midfielder’s shadow is carrying the plan and should be reinforced. If they are arriving as balls in behind, the covering centre-back’s pre-emptive drop and the line height are carrying it. If they are arriving as switches from the far flank, you have a different problem closer to the isolation case, and the near-side positioning needs to be set earlier because you have more warning.

Establish this before adjusting anything. A plan that is retuned in the twelfth minute on the basis of one dangerous moment is a plan that will be retuned four more times before half time.

The concession check

At around the half hour, verify that what you are conceding is what you agreed to concede.

Are the deliveries coming from wide, or have they crept into the half-space? Has the volume of wide crosses become a second-ball problem? Is the far post still owned, or has your far full-back begun drifting toward the ball as the match has opened up? Plans degrade at their edges, and the far post is usually the first edge to go because it depends on a player doing something while the action is elsewhere.

Half time

The diagnostic question is where the damage is coming from, and the three answers point to three different people.

Damage from the inside lane means the covering centre-back is not in the corridor, or the full-back is committing outside too early. Damage from the channel behind means the line height or the timing of the centre-back’s drop. Damage from the far post means the far-side pair, and it is not a fork problem at all.

Sides frequently make the wrong substitution here, replacing the near-side full-back because he is the visible participant when the actual failure is thirty yards away. Locating the failure before changing the personnel is worth the two minutes it takes.

Protecting a lead

The instinct is to drop deep, and against this profile that instinct is partially counterproductive for the reasons set out above: it shortens his route to the shooting angle and concentrates your defenders in the cutback zone.

The better late-match adjustment is to add a body to the structure rather than to drop the whole thing: move to a back five with the wide centre-back permanently in the corridor, keeping the block shape and the three relationships intact. Late in a match, add to a functioning plan rather than replacing it, because a tired squad can absorb one more instruction and cannot absorb a new system.

Chasing a match

If you release the near-side midfielder forward and push the full-back high, expect the plan to stop working immediately and expect the transition version of the threat to become primary. That is a legitimate choice and it should be made deliberately, with the scoreline and the minute agreed in advance rather than negotiated in the moment.

The patterns in how sides have coped

Rather than reason from individual fixtures, which is the least reliable form of evidence about wide attackers, it is more useful to name the structural features that recur when sides have contained this profile.

The first is a covering centre-back who leaves the defensive line to occupy the inside corridor. This is the most consistent marker and it is visible on any broadcast if you watch the defender rather than the ball. Sides that concede from the inside lane are almost always sides whose centre-backs prioritize the line; sides that cope are almost always the reverse.

The second is a near-side midfielder positioned narrow and low, shading the entry rather than pressing the ball. On camera this player looks uninvolved for long stretches, which is why containment is usually credited to the full-back who is visibly duelling.

The third is a high tolerance for wide deliveries. Sides that cope concede a lot of crosses and defend their box well. Sides that cope badly frequently defend the crosses better and concede the sequences that actually matter, which is a counterintuitive pattern until you notice that preventing crosses requires exactly the outward movement that opens the inside lane.

The fourth is an owned far post. Sides that concede to this profile from opposite-flank possession have almost always left the far-side full-back free to drift toward the ball, and sides that do not have a rule preventing it.

The fifth is conservative ball handling in their own half, which removes the transition version of the threat that no settled shape can solve after the fact.

Four of those five are coaching instructions rather than player qualities, which is the most encouraging thing in this article for a coach without elite personnel.

What is the single most predictive marker?

The covering centre-back’s position. If he holds the line while the attacker receives wide, the inside lane is open regardless of how well the full-back defends. If he drops into the corridor before the attacker commits, both branches of the fork run into a defender. One player’s habit predicts more of the outcome than any other single variable.

Rehearsing it

Session design belongs to the training articles in this series, and two rehearsal principles are specific enough to this plan to be worth naming here.

The first is that the three-player relationship cannot be trained as three separate jobs. Rehearsing the full-back’s distance control in isolation, the centre-back’s corridor position in isolation, and the midfielder’s shadow in isolation produces three players who each understand their own task and cannot execute it together, because the whole point is the timing between them. It has to be rehearsed as a unit against a live attacker who is genuinely allowed to choose either route.

The second is that the attacker in the practice must be permitted to go outside and to run in behind, and must be rewarded for doing so. A practice where the attacker is instructed to cut inside trains the defenders against a threat that has been artificially simplified, and it produces exactly the false confidence that the useful-predictability test warns about. If your practice attacker only does one thing, your defenders are learning to defend a player who does not exist.

The physical and attentional load

This plan has an unusual load profile because two of its three jobs are attentional rather than physical, and attentional jobs fail differently.

The midfielder fails first

Shading an entry lane is low-intensity, high-concentration work: continuous small adjustments, sustained for ninety minutes, with no ball contact for long stretches and no obvious feedback when it is done well. That is precisely the kind of task that degrades under fatigue before running output does, and it is the first component of this plan to break.

The observable warning sign is that the midfielder starts pressing the ball. When concentration fades, players revert to the more instinctive action, and the more instinctive action here is to close down the passer. A midfielder who begins doing that in the sixty-fifth minute is not disobeying; he is tired in a way that does not show up as heavy legs.

The practical response is to substitute that role earlier than seems warranted. It is a counterintuitive substitution because the player will not look tired, and it protects the component that everything else depends on.

The centre-back fails second

Leaving the defensive line is a deliberate decision taken repeatedly, and fatigue pushes players toward defaults. The default here is holding the line, so a tired covering centre-back drifts back into it without noticing.

Remind him at every stoppage. That is the entire intervention and it works, because the failure is a lapse rather than an inability.

The full-back’s load is different

His is the conventional load: repeated reactive accelerations and decelerations at moments chosen by somebody else, which is the most costly combination available. His decision quality degrades before his running output does, and the early signs are technical: committing early, standing square, reaching with the near foot.

Because the plan asks him to be patient rather than to be quick, the fatigue effect here is on patience specifically, and patience is the first thing a tired defender loses. A full-back who begins diving in at seventy minutes has not stopped believing the plan; he has stopped being able to execute the hardest part of it.

Communicating the plan

Everything demanding in this blueprint feels wrong to the player being asked to do it, and an instruction a player does not believe in will not survive a difficult opening twenty minutes.

The full-back is being told not to show, not to tackle, and not to commit, which sounds like being told not to defend. The version that lands is a picture rather than a principle: if you pick a side, he goes the other way and there is nobody there yet, so hold and let the cover arrive.

The centre-back is being told to break the line he has spent his career holding. The version that lands includes explicit removal of blame: leave the line, and if the offside consequences go against us, that is my decision.

The midfielder is being told to stand narrow and not press, which feels like being told to do nothing. The version that lands is that he is the reason the ball never reaches the attacker in the position he wants it, and that the job is visible only in what does not happen. Name the role inside the squad if it helps, because a named role is defended by the player who holds it.

The far-side full-back is being told to ignore the ball. That is the hardest instruction on the list and the cheapest to execute, and it needs the reason attached: the goal comes from behind you, not from in front of you.

Then tell them what success will look like. He will get the ball often. He will cross a lot. The full-back will be the player everyone talks about and the least important of the three. Nothing dangerous will happen, and it will not feel like control. A squad that has been told this in advance holds the plan; a squad that has not begins improvising, and improvisation is what the fork punishes.

What an analyst should count

Three counts across two or three matches, and they produce a report that changes Friday rather than one that gets filed.

The first is supply route, as set out above: half-space entry, wide entry with time, or early ball into the channel. This decides where the weight of the plan goes.

The second is sequence termination for every dangerous reception: shot from the inside lane, delivery from wide, delivery from the byline, run in behind contested, or recycled. This tells you what the defending side in the video actually achieved, and it lets you evaluate their plan rather than their result.

The third is far-post arrivals from opposite-flank possession, counted separately, because they are a different threat with different owners and they will be invisible if you fold them into a general tally.

What should the report not contain?

Conclusions drawn from one fixture, and any judgment of the final action based on outcome rather than on the option set. Both are unreliable for wide attackers specifically, since output depends heavily on what the opponent’s structure offered, and a single match tells you about that opponent rather than about the player.

Keeping the counts, the resulting instructions, and what actually happened attached to each fixture is what converts a scouting method into a system rather than a weekly improvisation, and it is the reason a coach who does this for a season arrives at the next fixture against a similar profile with his own evidence rather than a general principle.

Why this plan differs from the plan against an isolation attacker

Coaches who have prepared for one type of elite wide attacker often assume the preparation transfers, and here it does not, which is worth setting out because the two plans conflict at their most important points.

Against an isolation attacker the primary intervention is upstream of the reception: capping the block’s lateral shift so the switch never finds a lone full-back, and pre-positioning a midfielder in the space the attacker will attack. The duel is a fallback, the objective inside it is direction rather than possession, and the concession is the far side of the pitch.

Against an inverted finisher the primary intervention is at the reception and immediately after it, because the reception itself is rarely the problem. He can receive with a defender close and still be dangerous, since his threat begins with a short movement into a lane rather than with acceleration into open grass. The concession is not the far side of the pitch; it is the outside route on his own flank.

Three specific conflicts follow.

The first concerns the second defender’s position. Against an isolation attacker the pre-positioned second stands in the inside channel to remove the route to space, and he can be a midfielder. Against an inverted finisher the equivalent body has to be a centre-back in the diagonal corridor, because the corridor is closer to goal and because the threat that arrives there is a shot rather than a carry. A midfielder standing in that space is not enough.

The second concerns line height. Against an isolation attacker depth is a partial answer that reduces the value of every sequence. Against an inverted finisher depth helps against one threat and actively assists the other, which is why the recommendation here locates the variability in one defender rather than in the whole line.

The third concerns the full-back’s stance. Against an isolation attacker the full-back can and should close ground during the flight of a switch, arriving at an angle that pre-selects the outside route. Against an inverted finisher the equivalent aggression resolves the fork prematurely and is precisely the error to avoid.
