Nobody who prepared a side to face Garrincha was short of information about him, and that is what makes the duel worth studying. Two rows deserve a word because they are the ones coaches resist most. The first is the low and stable centre of mass through the change of direction. When a body changes direction laterally, the limit on how fast it can do so is set by how far the centre of mass has to travel relative to the base of support. A player who stays low keeps that distance short and can therefore push and recover in a shorter cycle. This is not a matter of being small; it is a matter of the knee and hip angle held through the movement, and tall players can hold it if they are taught to.

The second is the independence of the upper body from the lower body. The fourth reason is that doubling gave the attacker information. Did doubling up on Garrincha work?

The centre-back has two options and they are not equally good. He can travel toward the crosser, which shortens the delivery angle and forces the ball to be struck earlier and from further out, at the cost of leaving the near-post area. Or he can hold his position in the box and defend the delivery, which keeps the box shape intact and concedes the best crossing position on the pitch. The right answer depends on the quality of the delivery and the occupation of the box, and it has to be decided before the match rather than in the moment.

The second decision belongs to the far-side players, and it is the one most often wrong. When a delivery is coming from the byline area, the far-post defender’s instinct is to watch the ball, and the correct behaviour is to watch the runner and hold a position half a metre goal-side of him. Familiarity through repeated viewing improves recognition speed, which matters when recognition is the bottleneck. Against a disguised move, recognition is the bottleneck and familiarity is worth a great deal. Cue identification has the same limitation with an additional risk attached. Identifying the cue therefore hands the defender a temptation rather than a tool, and there is a real possibility that a defender who has been shown the cue defends worse than one who has not, because he now believes he can pre-empt something that cannot safely be pre-empted.

Live mimicry in training is the most valuable of the four and it is limited by supply. Mimicry works when the mimic can reproduce the mechanism, and the mechanism here was a balance and reacceleration advantage that a reserve winger by definition does not have. What the mimic can reproduce is the shape of the sequence, which trains the defender to expect the right thing and does nothing for the physical contest. Against a positional pattern, mimicry is superb, because a pattern is reproducible by anyone who understands it.

The collective plan is where the concession becomes large, and it should be stated without qualification. Video preparation would have improved the second defender’s timing substantially, because that timing is a coordination problem with a clear trigger. It would have improved the near centre-back’s travel decision, because that is a decision rather than a duel. It would have improved the box arrangement for the delivery, because arrangements are prepareable. It would have improved the pressing of the supply, because pressing triggers are the most prepareable thing in football. In other words it would have improved everything except the thing everyone imagines it would improve.

Would modern video preparation have contained Garrincha?

Not in the individual duel, and substantially everywhere else. Video improves recognition, cue awareness, and rehearsed coordination, and the duel was not lost through poor recognition. It would have sharpened the second defender’s travel, the centre-back’s decision, the box shape, and the pressing of his supply.

Where the preparation time should go instead

The finding is only worth having if it changes an allocation, so the reallocation is worth stating as a set of decisions a coach can make on Monday of a match week.

The first decision is to classify the opponent’s principal threats before any analysis begins, using the categories in the table above. This takes ten minutes and determines how the remaining hours are spent. Most staffs skip it and begin watching, which means the allocation is decided by whatever appears on screen first.

The second decision is to spend the individual analysis budget on threats where recognition is the bottleneck, and only there. Disguised moves, rehearsed set-piece routines, and positional patterns are worth individual and unit study in depth. A one-directional mechanical threat is worth roughly one clip, shown once, with a single sentence attached: this is what he does, you already know it, here is what we are doing about it collectively.

The third decision is to spend the freed time on the collective response to the threats that cannot be prepared individually. That means walking through the second defender’s travel line, deciding the centre-back’s travel rule and saying it out loud, fixing the box shape by delivery angle, and rehearsing the pressing trigger on the supply. All four are cheap in time and none of them requires a player to beat anybody.

The fourth decision is to protect the defender from the preparation. Against a compulsion-based threat, a defender who has been given too much detail will attempt to pre-empt, and pre-empting is the losing move. The correct briefing is short, honest, and slightly deflationary: you may be beaten in this duel, that is acceptable, here is what happens when it occurs and here is what you must do afterwards. A defender who has been told that being beaten is survivable defends better than one who has been told he must not be beaten, and the difference is visible within the first ten minutes.

The period’s answer to the preparation problem is worth reconstructing, both because it is interesting and because the constraints it operated under are the constraints an amateur coach still faces.

The primary instrument was testimony. A side preparing for an unfamiliar opponent gathered accounts from players and coaches who had faced him, and the accounts converged quickly on the same content: what he does, which side he goes, roughly how fast he is. Testimony is excellent at conveying categorical information and poor at conveying timing, which maps precisely onto the knowledge ceiling. The secondary instrument was the reputation adjustment, which was cruder and more consequential.
