Most wide defending is taught around the wrong objective, and the clearest way to see it is to study a wide player whose take-on was never the point. How defenders stopped Luis Figo is a question that produces a useless answer if it is asked in the usual way, because the usual way assumes the duel is about possession of the ball. Not as a default. Aggregate cross conversion is poor, largely because the population includes many hopeful balls from poor positions. Measuring the duel: cross location rather than cross volume
The angle-not-the-man rule implies a measurement, and the measurement is available to an analyst with no data budget at all.
The wrong measure is take-ons conceded, which is the standard number attached to full-backs and which rewards the behaviour that loses matches. A full-back who engages early and wins the ball often will post a good number and will concede byline deliveries every time he misses. A full-back who shepherds and never engages will post a poor number and will produce a match in which every delivery came from thirty metres with closed hips.

Say nothing at all when a duel is lost cleanly by a defender who was in the right position, because a clean loss by a well-positioned defender is a normal event in football and treating it as a failure is how a fourteen-year-old learns to lunge.
The second correction is a change in the instruction itself. The reason the cutback is under-defended is that it does not look like a crisis while it is developing. How do you defend a wide player who beats you in order to cross?
Take the delivery position rather than the ball. Approach on the goal side of his crossing foot, concede the outside step, retreat at his speed without engaging, and force the delivery from further out with his hips closing. Then match the box shape to the band he was forced into.
The full-back’s attacking cost
An instruction has a price elsewhere, and the price of the angle-not-the-man instruction falls on the defending side’s own attack.
A full-back playing two metres off his opponent, retreating at the crosser’s speed, and recovering to the near edge of the six-yard box after every delivery is a full-back who is deep, facing his own goal, and not available for the transition. Sides that install this instruction and then wonder why they cannot counter are paying a cost they did not price.
Three mitigations exist and they are all structural rather than individual.
The first is to use the opposite full-back as the transition outlet, accepting that the attacked flank is a defensive flank for the fixture. This is the cheapest option and it requires only that the far-side full-back is told, because otherwise both full-backs will sit and the side will have no width at all when it wins the ball.
The second is to give the near-side winger the counter responsibility instead, holding him higher and accepting that the defensive workload on that flank falls on the full-back and the midfielder. This works against a crosser who does not track back and fails against one who does.
The third is to change the instruction by game state rather than holding it for ninety minutes. A side chasing a match cannot afford a full-back permanently deep, and the correct adjustment is to accept more byline deliveries in exchange for the attacking outlet, made deliberately and communicated rather than allowed to happen through drift. Naming the trade converts an unforced degradation into a decision.
The general point is worth stating because it applies to every defensive instruction in this series. A plan that only names what it prevents is half a plan. The other half is what it costs, and a coach who cannot state the cost has not finished thinking.
Coaching the forcing objective
Installing this instruction is a behaviour change rather than a knowledge transfer, and behaviour changes fail for predictable reasons. Four coaching points carry almost all the difficulty.
The first is the approach angle, and it has to be corrected in slow motion before it is ever attempted at speed. Ask a full-back to walk to a stationary crosser and stop where he thinks he should be, and he will almost always stop on the touchline side, because that is where twelve years of instruction have put him. Physically moving him to the goal side of the crossing foot, showing him what the crosser can and cannot do from each position, and letting him feel the difference is worth more than any amount of explanation. This is a two-minute intervention with a permanent effect and it is almost never done.
The second is the distance, which degrades under pressure faster than any other component. A defender who is beaten once will close the distance on the next repetition, because closing feels like a correction. The coaching response is to name it in advance: you will want to get closer after you are beaten, that is the instinct to resist, the distance is the plan. A player who has been warned about an urge is much more able to notice it.
The third is the retreat speed, which is a matching problem rather than a running problem. The defender’s job is to travel at exactly the crosser’s speed, and the common failures are retreating faster, which opens the striking window early, and retreating slower, which turns the sequence into a race he loses. This is trainable with nothing more than a pair of players and a touchline, walking then jogging then running, and it transfers quickly because it is a rhythm rather than a technique.
The fourth is the front-foot block, and the coaching point that matters is the body angle rather than the foot. A defender square to the crosser presents his shins and blocks nothing; a defender sideways on presents the length of his leg across the low lane. Ten repetitions of the sideways presentation, without a ball, changes the shape permanently.
What ruins the installation is running it as a live one-on-one exercise from the start. A live duel returns the defender to his instincts under competitive pressure, which is exactly the environment in which the old behaviour reasserts itself, and the coach then concludes that the instruction does not work. Constraint first, competition later, and the constraint that works best is a simple one: the defender may not attempt to win the ball at all, and the exercise is scored on where the delivery came from.

What an analyst logs across a season
The measurement described earlier becomes far more valuable when it accumulates, and the accumulation is what separates a coach who knows an opponent from one who remembers him.
Four records are worth keeping per fixture and none takes more than a few minutes.
The first is the delivery band distribution, meaning how many crosses each opponent produced from each of the four bands against your side. Over a season this reveals which opponents are actually a crossing threat and which merely cross a lot, and those are very different things. A side producing twenty deliveries from deep is not a crossing threat. A side producing six from the byline band is.
The second is the hips-open rate, which measures how well your own full-backs are executing. A rising open-hips rate against a stable opponent profile is the clearest early signal that an instruction is decaying, and it decays gradually rather than suddenly, which is why it is invisible without the record.
The third is the concession map, meaning where the deliveries that produced shots came from. This is the record that settles arguments, because it converts a debate about whether the full-back is doing his job into a picture of which two positions on the pitch are producing all the damage.
The fourth is the response record: what the opponent changed when the flank was denied. Most sides have exactly one adjustment, and knowing it in advance is worth more than any amount of general information about their attacking play, because it lets a coach prepare the second problem before it arrives rather than after.
None of this requires software, a camera, or an assistant. It requires a decision before kick-off about what will be watched, and a habit of writing it down in a place where it can be found again ten months later against the same opponent.
The far side, and the switch
A plan built around one flank has a mirror image, and the mirror image is where well-organised sides get punished by delivery specialists rather than by anything the specialist does himself.
The mechanism is straightforward. A side that has committed its near-side midfielder to screening and its full-back to a deep shepherding role has, by construction, concentrated attention on one flank. The opposing side’s cheapest response is not to keep attacking that flank; it is to switch, arriving on the far side against a full-back who has spent twenty minutes watching a duel he is not involved in and a covering structure that has shifted across.
Three requirements answer it and they are all preparation rather than reaction.
The first is that the far-side full-back holds a narrower position than his instinct suggests while the ball is on the opposite flank, so that the switch arrives to a defender who is already inside rather than one who has to travel. This costs him the ability to press the receiver immediately, which is the correct trade because an unpressed receiver forty metres from goal is not a threat and a beaten full-back in the wide area is.
The second is that the far centre-back rather than the far full-back is the player who must not drift. Defensive lines slide toward the ball, which is correct, and the failure mode is that they slide too far, leaving the far centre-back level with the penalty spot when a switch arrives. The measurement that works is the far centre-back staying within the width of the six-yard box extended, and it is checkable from the touchline.
The third is that the screening midfielder does not follow the ball across. His job is the edge of the penalty area and it does not change when the ball switches, which feels like laziness to everyone watching and is the difference between defending a cutback and not defending one.
The reason this matters specifically against a delivery specialist is that the switch is his side’s natural adjustment when the flank is denied. A crossing side facing a well-organised near-side response does not usually invent something new; it moves the problem to the other flank and runs the same sequence with a different player. A coach who has prepared one flank has prepared half a fixture.
Why this duel is the best teaching case in wide defending
A final note on why this profile is worth studying at all, given that it is less spectacular than every other subject in its cluster.
The reason is that it isolates a variable. Against a pace threat, a dribbler, or an inverted finisher, the wide duel is contaminated by the individual contest: a defender can be beaten by superior athleticism or superior technique, and the structural questions get buried under the question of whether he was good enough. Against a delivery specialist, the individual contest is close to irrelevant, because the crosser does not need to beat anyone decisively. What remains, once the athletic question is removed, is pure geometry and pure organisation, which is exactly the content a coach can actually change.
That is why the angle-not-the-man rule emerges most clearly here and applies everywhere else. Every wide duel is really a question about where the opponent’s final action will happen and whether your side has prepared for that location. Against most opponents the question is obscured by the drama of the take-on. Against this one there is no drama, so the question is visible.
The practical consequence is that a coach who installs the instruction against a delivery specialist will find it improves his side against every other wide profile as well, because the underlying behaviours, the goal-side approach, the maintained distance, the matched retreat, the front-foot block, the recovery to the near edge of the six-yard box, are correct against all of them and are merely less obviously correct when the opponent is doing something more spectacular. The unspectacular opponent is the best teacher available.
The set-piece boundary
One boundary has to be marked clearly, because a plan that works in open play can create a false sense of having solved a crossing threat.
Every tool described in this article depends on the existence of a duel. The goal-side approach, the maintained distance, the matched retreat, the front-foot block, and the forcing of a closed hip position all require a defender to be within influencing range of the crosser at the moment he strikes. A dead ball removes all of that. The delivery happens unopposed, from a position chosen by the taker rather than forced by anyone, with the full menu of deliveries available and the box static.
That means a delivery specialist who also takes set pieces presents two separate problems with two separate solutions, and solving one does nothing for the other. The open-play problem is answered by forcing the angle. The dead-ball problem is answered only by the marking scheme, the first-contact responsibilities, and the rehearsal that assigns bodies to zones and runners before the whistle. A side that has shepherded him competently for eighty minutes and then defends a corner with an unrehearsed arrangement has not defended him at all.
There is a second-order effect worth naming, because it changes in-match decisions. If the defensive plan is to concede the outside route and force deliveries from further out, the plan will produce more blocked crosses, and blocked crosses produce corners. A side installing this instruction should expect its corner concession rate to rise and should be prepared for that rather than surprised by it.
