The plan for how to stop Bukayo Saka can be stated in one sentence, and the sentence is deliberately strange: do not defend him. Defend the pair. That is the entire mechanism of the goals this profile creates. Not a beaten defender. Two defenders who each did something reasonable.
The hierarchy fixes it by making the assignments unequal and explicit. One defender owns the ball, unconditionally, and does not leave the carrier under any circumstance short of the carrier releasing it. The other owns the space behind and inside, unconditionally, and does not step to the ball under any circumstance short of the first defender being beaten. Which defender owns the ball and which owns the space?

A wide attacker holds width, receiving with his back partially to the touchline and his body angled infield, roughly level with or slightly inside the edge of the penalty area. A full-back is in front of him. Behind the attacker, a second attacker, usually his own full-back, is arriving at pace into the space outside.
The defending full-back has four options and every one of them loses.
He can hold his position and defend the carrier squarely. The overlapping runner goes past him on the outside into the space behind, receives, and reaches the byline. The full-back has defended the duel perfectly and conceded a cutback from the goal line.
He can turn and follow the overlapping runner. The carrier now has the inside lane completely open, cuts in, and either shoots or plays the ball across the face of the defence. The full-back has defended the run perfectly and conceded a shot from the corner of the box.
He can jockey backward, trying to stay between both. This is the improvised compromise most defenders choose and it is the worst of the three, because it concedes the reception, concedes the momentum, concedes the ground, and still forces the same choice five yards deeper with the goal that much closer.
He can step aggressively to the carrier and try to win the ball before the runner arrives. Against a competent carrier this is beaten with one touch, and once beaten, both attackers are behind the defensive line simultaneously.
Four options, four losses. The conclusion is not that the full-back should choose better. It is that the situation cannot be solved by the full-back and that any plan asking him to solve it has already failed at the whiteboard. The resolution is a second defender with a rehearsed job, and the entire remainder of this article is a specification of who that defender is, when he moves, and what the team accepts conceding while he is doing it.
The shape and the line height
The plan works from a mid-block with a back four and a genuine wide midfielder ahead of the full-back on the relevant side. That is the default, and the reasons for it are structural rather than preferential.
A high press is a legitimate alternative and a different article, because a high press does not defend this problem, it prevents the situation from arising. If your pressing coordination is genuinely good, prevention is better than containment and you should press. If it is not, a partial press produces the exact condition that hurts most, which is a wide pair attacking a displaced defensive shape in transition, and a partial press is the worst available plan.
A deep block is also legitimate and carries a specific cost that coaches consistently underestimate. Dropping deep compresses the space behind the full-back, which sounds like it solves the overlap, and it does reduce the value of the run in behind. What it does instead is deliver both attackers into the penalty area with the defence already on its own line, which converts every sequence into a box-defending problem and multiplies the number of cutbacks you have to survive. A deep block against a combination pair does not remove the problem; it moves it fifteen yards closer to your goal and takes away your ability to attack the delivery. Choose it only if your box defending is genuinely strong and your midfield cannot hold a mid-block line.
The mid-block is the default because it preserves the one thing the plan needs most, which is the distance between the defensive line and the goal that allows a covering defender to step forward into the inside lane without immediately exposing the six-yard box. Take that distance away and the covering job becomes impossible, because stepping forward from your own penalty spot means abandoning the goal.
Line height should be set so that the defensive line sits roughly on the edge of the defensive third when the ball is in the middle third, and drops no more than five to eight yards when the ball enters the wide attacking zone. The profile that copes
The most useful defender against this profile is not the fastest and not the most physical. He is the one with the shortest reaction time from a stationary set position and the discipline to hold a stance he has been told to hold when the stance feels wrong.
Recovery pace matters, because everything in a wide duel eventually reduces to whether a beaten defender can get back into the sequence, but it matters less here than against a pure runner, because this profile beats defenders with a change of direction and a combination rather than with a straight-line burst. What matters more is lateral quickness across the first two steps, since the sequence that hurts is the shift from defending an outside run to defending an inside cut, and that shift lives entirely in the first two steps.
Height and physicality matter least of all, and coaches who select a big, strong full-back for this fixture are usually selecting for the aerial duel that the plan is designed to make harmless.
The most underrated quality is compliance, and it is worth being blunt about it. The stance this plan requires will feel wrong to a good defender, because it involves letting a runner go past on the outside while staying attached to the carrier, which every defensive instinct screams against. A full-back who cannot suppress that instinct will chase the runner in the twentieth minute, and the plan will fail with the whiteboard version intact. Select for the defender who does what he is told when it feels wrong, and if you do not have one, change the plan rather than hoping.
The stance
The stance is a half-open body position, hips angled so that the inside lane is the more difficult route, with the defender’s weight on the balls of the feet and the near foot slightly withdrawn. The distance is roughly two to three yards at the moment of reception, closing to two as the carrier settles.
The reason for angling to protect the inside is that the inside is the higher-value route and the outside is the route the plan has decided to concede. It is deliberately conceded, which is different from being beaten there, and the difference is that a conceded route is a route into a covered space. The whole plan is a machine for converting the dangerous route into the covered one, and the stance is where that conversion starts.
The most common error here is the square stance. A full-back standing square is a full-back who has declined to make a choice, and declining to make a choice hands the choice to the attacker, which is the one outcome the plan exists to prevent.

The defensive answer is that the wide midfielder ahead of the full-back owns that runner, and he owns him from the moment the run starts rather than from the moment the ball is played.
That timing detail is the whole instruction. A wide midfielder who tracks the overlap when the pass is played is always half a second late, and half a second in that channel is five yards, which is the difference between a contested cross and a free one. He has to leave with the run, not with the ball.
The trigger is visual and specific: the moment the overlapping full-back’s second stride commits him past his own attacker’s shoulder. Before that, the run can still be a decoy and the wide midfielder holds. After it, the run is genuine and the wide midfielder goes, and he goes on a recovery line that takes him goal-side of the runner rather than ball-side, arriving to defend the delivery rather than to make a tackle.

While the wide midfielder is going, the full-back does not move. That is the second half of the instruction and the half that gets abandoned first. His job has not changed because a runner went past him. He still owns the ball, still stays attached to the carrier, still protects the inside lane. If he turns his head to check the runner, the carrier cuts inside on the head turn, and a good one will do it deliberately.
The underlap: the assignment nobody rehearses
Why is the underlap more dangerous than the overlap?
Because it arrives in a shooting position rather than a crossing one, it attacks the seam between two defenders instead of one defender’s channel, and it is owned by the centre-back rather than the full-back. Most sides brief the full-back and the wide midfielder thoroughly and never tell the centre-back anything.
The underlap is the pattern that beats most defensive plans, and it beats them because it is defended by a different player and almost nobody tells that player.
The underlapping run comes from behind and inside, between the defending full-back and the near-side centre-back, aiming for the space at the corner of the six-yard box or the penalty spot rather than the byline. It is more dangerous than the overlap for three reasons: it arrives in a shooting position rather than a crossing position, it attacks a seam between two defenders rather than a single defender’s channel, and it drags the covering defender into a decision he has usually not been briefed on.
The underlap is owned by the near-side centre-back, and the instruction is that he steps into the inside lane to meet the runner rather than holding the defensive line.
Every word of that sentence costs something and the costs must be accepted explicitly. Stepping means the back four is no longer aligned, which means the offside line is compromised and the far-side centre-back is defending a wider zone alone. It means a striker occupying the centre now has a free run at the space the stepping centre-back vacated. It means the goalkeeper’s starting position has to account for a hole in front of him.
Those costs are real, and the alternative costs more. A centre-back who holds the line through an underlap concedes a runner arriving unopposed at the corner of the six-yard box with the ball being delivered flat across him, which is the highest-value chance the pair can manufacture. Holding the line is the instinct, holding the line is what coaching a back four teaches, and holding the line is wrong here.
The trigger is the underlapping runner crossing the imaginary line extending from the near post out through the corner of the penalty area. Before that line he is not yet a threat and the centre-back holds. After it he is, and the centre-back steps.
The holding midfielder has a job attached to this, and it is the job that makes the whole thing survivable: he drops into the space the stepping centre-back vacated, screening the penalty spot. He is not marking anyone. He is occupying a hole, which is a job most midfielders find deeply unsatisfying and which prevents more goals than any tackle he will make all season.
The wide-pair defending table

Read the fifth column before the second. A plan whose concessions have not been stated is not a plan, because the first time the team concedes what it decided to concede, somebody will call it a mistake and the plan will be abandoned at half time.
The collective triggers and the cover behaviour
Three collective behaviours make the individual assignments survivable, and none of them is optional.
The first is the entry-pass shade. The near-side central midfielder does not press the passer who is about to feed the wide attacker. He shades the lane, meaning he positions his body so that the direct pass into the wide zone requires more air or more angle than the passer would like. The purpose is not to intercept, which will happen rarely. The purpose is to delay the entry by a fraction and to force the pass to arrive slightly behind or slightly under-hit, and either of those buys the full-back the half-yard he needs to set his stance before contact. A midfielder who presses the ball instead achieves nothing and removes himself from the covering structure.
The second is the far-side compression. When the ball enters the wide zone on one flank, the opposite full-back tucks inside toward the far post rather than holding width. This is standard defensive organization and it is worth restating because it is the behaviour that makes conceding the cross safe. A cross into a box where the far post is unoccupied is a chance. A cross into a box where the far post has a defender in it is a clearance most of the time. The whole plan is built on choosing which delivery to concede, and the choice is worthless if the box is not organized to receive it.
The third is the rest-defense discipline of the near-side full-back’s own attacking position. If your full-back on that side is advanced when possession turns over, none of this applies, because the pair will attack a defensive shape with a hole in it and the covering hierarchy will be one player short. That is a possession-phase decision rather than a defending decision, and it is the reason opposition plans against combination pairs so often fail in matches where the team was otherwise organized: the shape was correct in settled defending and absent in transition.
The plan in sequence, phase by phase
What follows is the plan as it actually unfolds, narrated in order, so a coach can deliver it as a sequence rather than as a set of rules.
The sequence begins in the middle third with his side in possession and the ball on the opposite flank. At this point the plan is entirely about the entry. The near-side midfielder is shading, the full-back has set his depth relative to the defensive line, and the wide midfielder is holding a position from which he can see both the carrier and the overlapping full-back. Nobody is chasing anything. The single objective of this phase is that the pass into the wide zone arrives at a moment of your choosing rather than his.
The sequence’s second phase begins at the reception. The full-back closes to two to three yards, sets the half-open stance protecting the inside, and stops. He does not tackle. The wide midfielder now has one job, which is to watch the overlapping full-back’s hips rather than the ball, because the run announces itself in the hips a full stride before it announces itself anywhere else.
The third phase is the fork, and it resolves in one of three ways.
If the overlap comes, the wide midfielder leaves on the second stride, recovers goal-side, and the full-back does not move. The likely outcome is a delivery from wide, which is what the plan wanted.
If the underlap comes, the near-side centre-back steps at the trigger line and the holding midfielder drops into the vacated zone. The likely outcome is a contested reception in a crowded area or a pass that has to be played backward, which is also what the plan wanted.
If neither comes and the carrier attacks the full-back alone, the plan has already won, because a genuine one-versus-one is the outcome with the lowest expected value for the attacking side. The full-back’s instruction in this branch is to hold the stance, force the extra touch, and let the near-side central midfielder arrive on the blind side to double once the carrier has committed his second touch. Doubling before the second touch is a foul or a beaten pair; doubling after it is a recovery.
The fourth phase is the delivery. Whichever branch fired, the sequence ends with a ball into the box from a position you chose. Far-side full-back is at the far post. Both centre-backs are attacking the flight if it is aerial and holding their ground if it is flat. The holding midfielder is on the penalty spot. Why the individual scouting report is almost useless here
This is the counter-reading the article has to address, because the individual scouting report is what most sides produce and it is what most sides will produce again next week.
The standard opposition report on a wide attacker contains his preferred direction, his shooting zones, his crossing profile, his first-touch tendencies, and a note on which foot he favours. Every line of it is accurate and the report will not change a single outcome, for a reason that is structural rather than a matter of quality.
The report describes what he does with the ball. The goals come from what happens before he has it, or from what a second attacker does while he has it. A defender armed with perfect knowledge of the carrier’s preferences is still, in the moment that matters, a defender facing two attackers with one body, and preferences do not help with arithmetic.
There is a sharper version of the point. Detailed individual scouting can actively harm the plan, because it tempts the full-back into anticipation. A defender who has been told the attacker prefers to cut inside will lean inside, and leaning is a form of committing. The pair’s whole function is to punish a committed defender, and the report has just produced one.
The report that helps looks different and takes longer to build. It describes relationships rather than actions. Which run does the full-back behind him make most often, the overlap or the underlap, and does the choice depend on where the ball came from. How early does the run start relative to the reception. Does the carrier hold the ball waiting for the run or release it early and re-run. Which of the two attackers is the decision maker, meaning which one’s movement the other reacts to. What happens on the third-man rotation, and how often do they use it.
Those five questions are worth more than twenty on the individual, and they are answered by watching two matches with the eyes off the ball, tracking the two players as a unit. That is a different analytical discipline from player scouting and it is the discipline this profile demands.

The set-piece addendum
Two set-piece dimensions attach to this plan and both are frequently ignored.
The first is that the plan generates corners. A plan that deliberately concedes deliveries from wide positions will produce blocked crosses, and blocked crosses produce corners. A side that contains a wide pair excellently for eighty minutes and defends corners poorly has not contained anything. The corner-defending scheme is therefore part of this plan rather than separate from it, and the specific consideration is that your holding midfielder, who has been screening the penalty spot all match, is now needed in the box, which changes your short-corner coverage. Decide in advance who takes the short-corner responsibility on the near side, because it will not be the player who normally does it.
The second is the attacking set piece and the transition it creates. When your side wins a corner, the wide pair you have spent the match containing is the outlet, and the attacker holding width is the first pass. The rest-defense instruction on your own attacking corners should therefore station a defender specifically on his shoulder, not to mark him in the box, but to be the first contact if the ball is cleared to him. Sides who leave two players back on corners against a side with a fast wide pair are leaving one too few, because the pair does not need a numerical advantage to hurt you, it needs a head start.
Free kicks in the wide areas of your defensive third have a related consideration. A delivery from that zone is the pattern this plan is least equipped to handle, because the pair structure does not exist at a dead ball and the box coverage is a different scheme. Nothing in this plan transfers, and the specific instruction is to avoid conceding fouls in that zone, which means the full-back’s non-tackling instruction matters as much for the fouls it prevents as for the duels it wins.
The transition addendum
The plan assumes a settled defensive shape and the pair is at its most dangerous when the shape is not settled, so the transition case needs its own treatment.
When your side loses the ball in the attacking half with your full-back advanced on that flank, the hierarchy is broken before the sequence starts, because the defender who owns the ball is fifty yards away. The replacement hierarchy must be declared in advance, and the standard version is that the near-side centre-back becomes the ball owner and the holding midfielder becomes the space owner, with the far-side centre-back sliding across to preserve a pair centrally.
That arrangement concedes the width entirely, which is correct: in transition the priority is the central lane and the delivery is survivable. What it must not do is produce the improvised version in which the centre-back steps out and nobody covers behind, which is how a transition against a fast wide pair becomes a shot rather than a cross.
The second transition case is the one that follows your own attacking corner and it is covered above. The third is the case of a turnover in the middle third with the shape roughly intact, where the standard hierarchy applies but the trigger timings compress, and the practical instruction is that the wide midfielder leaves earlier than he would in a settled sequence, because there is no time for the second-stride confirmation.
The fallbacks: what to do when the first plan fails
Every counter-plan needs a documented failure route, and this one has three, ordered by cost.
The first fallback is a stance change without a personnel change. If the pair is beating the plan by consistently reaching the byline, the full-back’s stance moves from protecting the inside to protecting the outside, and the covering job flips: the near-side centre-back now covers the cut inside rather than the underlap, and the wide midfielder tucks in rather than recovering wide. This concedes the inside cut and the shot from the corner of the box, deliberately, in exchange for removing the byline. It is a bad trade in general and an acceptable one against a pair whose cutback is producing chances and whose shooting is not.
The second fallback is the third defender, meaning the near-side central midfielder is reassigned permanently to the wide zone. Your midfield is now a two in central areas and you have effectively conceded control of the middle third. This is a large price and it is the correct price when the wide pair is the opposition’s only route to goal, which is more often true than coaches admit. Against a side with one dominant flank and no central threat, moving a midfielder permanently to that flank is the highest-value adjustment available and it should be made at half time rather than in the seventieth minute.
The third fallback is the shape change to a back five, with the wide midfielder becoming a wing-back and the near-side centre-back becoming a wide centre-back. This resolves the geometry cleanly, for the reason described in the wider cluster material: a wide centre-back can step into the inside lane without breaking a line, because two centre-backs remain behind him. It costs the middle third almost entirely and it costs your attacking outlet on that flank. Make it when you are protecting a result rather than chasing one, and make it as a planned substitution rather than a reshuffle, because a back five improvised by pushing a midfielder into defence is a back five with no rehearsed handovers.
What to concede deliberately
Naming the concessions is the part of a counter-plan that coaches skip and players need most, because a concession that has not been named will be treated as a mistake by whoever concedes it, and a player who thinks he has made a mistake stops executing the plan.
Concede the crossed ball from the wide area. This is the plan’s central trade. You have organized a box with a far-side full-back at the back post, two centre-backs attacking the flight, a holding midfielder on the penalty spot, and a goalkeeper set for the delivery type. A delivery into that box is a low-probability chance and you should be content to face twenty of them. Say the number out loud in the meeting, because a team that has been told to expect twenty crosses will not panic at the eighth.
Concede the corner. Blocked crosses become corners and the plan produces blocked crosses by design. A side that treats each conceded corner as a failure will start stepping out to intercept crosses, and stepping out is how the pair gets in behind.
Concede the recycled possession. When the underlap is covered and the overlap is tracked, the pair’s remaining option is a pass backward and a reset. That is a win, and it will look like sustained pressure on the touchline because sustained pressure and sustained containment produce identical highlight footage. Judge the plan on entries into the penalty area and shots from central zones rather than on territory.
Concede the throw-in in your defensive third. The full-back’s non-tackling instruction means the ball will frequently go out for a throw rather than being won cleanly. That is the correct outcome and it should be praised rather than tolerated.
Do not concede the underlap, the flat cutback to the penalty spot, or the free strike from the corner of the box. Those three are the plan’s actual failure conditions and everything else is noise.
How the plan degrades with a weaker squad

What does successful containment look like from the touchline?
Like being under siege. They keep the ball in your defensive third, complete passes along the touchline, and cross repeatedly, and your full-back is beaten on the outside deliberately. Judge it on penalty-area entries and central shots rather than on territory, or somebody will abandon a working plan.
Coaches usually judge a containment plan by whether the attacker has scored, which is a lagging indicator with enormous variance and which will mislead you in both directions. Four leading indicators tell you within twenty minutes.
The first is the count of underlapping runs that arrived unopposed. This should be zero. One is a warning, two means the trigger is not being executed and you should switch to the holding-midfielder version described in the degradation section.
The second is the location of deliveries. If they are arriving from the byline and flat, the plan is failing in a specific way, because the byline is the position you decided to concede only after the wide midfielder had recovered goal-side. Deliveries from deeper and at a crossing angle mean the plan is working.

The near-post shot and the cutback, defended as separate problems

Or he may miss and take himself out of the play, leaving the second ball uncontested. The cutback is a different problem entirely and it arrives from a different position, infield of the goal line rather than on it, travelling flat and fast across the top of the six-yard box toward the penalty spot. The reason it is dangerous is that every defender in the box is facing the wrong way and moving toward his own goal, while every attacker arriving is facing goal and moving forward. Reversing a defender’s momentum takes longer than starting an attacker’s, which is the whole physics of the pattern.
Defending it requires one player who never turns toward his own goal, and that player is the holding midfielder on the penalty spot. Watch two matches with the ball ignored. Track the wide attacker and the full-back behind him as a single object. Count four things.
Count the ratio of overlaps to underlaps, and note whether the choice correlates with where the ball came from. When the pair separates: the reception in the inside channel
The plan so far assumes the wide attacker starts wide, which is his default and not his only starting point. The pattern that breaks a wide-pair plan is the one where he abandons the width entirely and appears in the inside channel between the opposition midfield and defensive lines, receiving on the half-turn with the full-back holding the width behind him.
That reversal is dangerous precisely because it inverts the hierarchy. The defender who owns the ball is now not the full-back, because the ball is not in the full-back’s zone. Six ways this plan fails

The sixth is the broken transition hierarchy. Possession turns over with the near-side full-back advanced and the replacement hierarchy has not been declared, so the centre-back steps out and nobody covers behind.
