The plan to stop Vinicius Junior fits in one sentence: refuse to over-shift, put the second defender in the space before the ball gets there, and hand the far side of the pitch to the opponent without argument. That last clause is not a caveat, it is the payment, and a coach who is unwilling to make it does not have this plan, he has a wish.

What makes the plan work is that it attacks the wrong thing on purpose. Everybody who prepares for this player prepares for the duel: which defender, how fast, how physical, whether to show him inside or outside. The duel is real and it is close to unwinnable in isolation, and the reason it is close to unwinnable is not that the defender is inadequate. It is that by the time the duel exists, four separate decisions have already gone against the defending side, and all four of them happened while the ball was somewhere else entirely.
This blueprint works backward from that. It sequences the four decisions, names the defeat condition for each, assigns each one to a specific player, and only then deals with the duel, which is treated here as a fallback rather than as a plan. The player, in the only terms that matter for a plan
A Brazilian left-sided attacker who came through Flamengo before Real Madrid. For the purposes of a counter-plan the biography stops there, because none of the rest of it changes what a defending side has to do on Saturday.
What matters is the input requirement. He functions when he receives high and wide, facing a defender, with grass behind that defender and enough space that acceleration converts into separation. Given those conditions he can go outside or inside, and the acceleration over the first few strides is severe enough that a static one against one is not a contest a defender should expect to win with any regularity, regardless of who the defender is.
That is the honest starting point and it is not a compliment, it is a constraint on the planning. A plan that assumes the duel can be won reliably is built on a false premise. A plan that assumes the duel will occasionally be lost, and asks where it is lost and what happens next, is built on a true one.
The second thing that matters is that the input is manufactured. He is not primarily a player who finds space through movement in tight areas; he is a player whose team creates space for him through ball circulation, and whose own movement is mostly about timing his arrival into space that was already produced. That distinction is the entire foundation of this blueprint, because manufactured conditions can be interrupted and innate qualities cannot.

The pre-positioned second
The organizing claim of this blueprint, and the sentence a coach should be able to repeat back after reading it:
Against an isolation attacker, a second defender who arrives is always too late and a second defender who is already there is always enough. That turns the problem from a recovery-speed decision into a shape decision.
Both halves need defending because both are stated more strongly than most coaches are comfortable with.
The first half, that arriving is too late, is not universally true and it is close enough to be treated as a rule. The reason is timing arithmetic rather than opinion. From the moment the isolation attacker takes his first touch to the moment he has either beaten his man or entered the box is a very short window. A defender who begins recovering at the moment of the first touch, from a position ten or fifteen yards away, arrives inside that window only if he is running in a straight line toward a stationary target, which is not what is happening. He arrives late, off balance, on the wrong side, and his arrival frequently makes matters worse, because a defender running at speed can be eliminated with a single touch in a way that a stationary one cannot.
The second half, that being there is enough, needs a qualification: enough to remove the highest-value outcome, not enough to win the ball. A pre-positioned second defender standing in the inside channel does not stop the sequence. He makes the inside route unattractive, which pushes the sequence outside, which converts a potential shot from the inside lane into a delivery from a wide position. That is the whole objective. Nobody is stopping this player from having the ball in dangerous areas; the plan is about where the sequence terminates.
The consequence of the claim is the useful part. If arriving is too late and being there is enough, then the entire question of who defends him becomes secondary to the question of where your players stand while the ball is on the other side of the pitch. That is a shape problem, it is coachable, it requires no exceptional athlete, and it is available to a side at any level.
The four-step manufacture
Here is the sequence the plan interrupts, and it is worth watching for on video before anything else, because a coach who has not seen it will not believe how repeatable it is.
Step one: the ball is circulated to the far side. Not a single switch, a period of possession on the opposite flank, long enough that the defending block commits to it. This step looks harmless and is the setup.
Step two: the defending block shifts across. It does this because blocks are trained to shift toward the ball, because the ball-side would otherwise become a numerical problem, and because a player who refuses to shift looks like he is not working. Every one of those reasons is legitimate, which is why this step is so reliable.
Step three: the near-side full-back is left alone. Note the phrasing. He is not beaten, he has not lost anyone, he has not made an error. His own team’s shape has placed him in a one against one before the ball has arrived, and if you ask him afterward why he was isolated he will not have an answer, because the answer belongs to two players he cannot see.
Step four: the switch arrives with hang time. This is the step that gets least attention and matters most. A ball travelling forty yards diagonally spends a meaningful period in the air, and during that period the attacker sets his feet, checks his shoulder, reads the defender’s distance, and receives already facing forward. The hang time is not incidental to the threat; it is a component of it.
Then, and only then, the duel.
Why does the plan start three passes early?
Because the isolation is produced during those passes, not during the duel. By the moment the ball reaches the wide attacker, the block has already over-shifted, the near-side support has already vacated, and the reception has already been given away. Each of those is reversible while the ball is elsewhere and irreversible once it arrives.
The isolation-denial sequence
This is the reference artifact for the blueprint. Each row is one of the four manufacturing steps, matched with the condition that defeats it, the player who owns that condition, the trigger that tells him to act, what the defence gives up by acting, and the sign that the intervention has failed and the fallback is needed.

The last column is the one coaches skip and the one that makes the table usable in real time. Each intervention has a specific way of failing, and each failure has a specific answer further down this article. A plan without failure signals is a plan that gets abandoned wholesale at half time because nobody could tell which part was broken.
The shape and the line height
Before any individual assignment, two structural decisions frame everything else, and getting either wrong makes the rest of the plan unexecutable.
The block that does not over-shift
The shape is less about formation than about a rule, and the rule is that the defensive line and the midfield line shift by different amounts.
The back line compresses toward the ball, as it should. A back four that refuses to slide creates gaps between defenders, which is a worse problem than anything discussed here. What must not slide the same distance is the midfield line, and specifically the far-side midfielder, whose job during opposite-side possession is to occupy the space rather than to support the ball.
Expressing the limit is the hard part. Distances in metres do not survive a match, because the pitch dimensions vary, the opponent’s width varies, and players do not carry rulers. The workable expression is relational: the far-side midfielder positions himself so that he is closer to the space behind and inside his own full-back than the opposition’s wide attacker is to that same space. That is a comparison he can make with his own eyes, and it self-corrects as the opponent moves.
A second, cruder version works for sides that cannot hold a relational instruction under pressure. Give the far-side midfielder a landmark: he does not cross the far edge of the centre circle while the ball is on the opposite flank. Crude rules survive contact with a match in a way that nuanced ones do not, and this one produces roughly the right position roughly often enough.
Line height
The line height decision against this profile has a clear answer and an uncomfortable one, and the two are the same.
A high line is the condition his threat wants. Grass behind the defensive line is the input, and a high line supplies it directly. So the instinct is to drop deep, and dropping deep does genuinely reduce the space, and it is still not a complete answer, for two reasons.
The first is that dropping deep does not remove the isolation. A deep block still shifts, still gets switched, and still leaves a full-back one against one, only now the duel happens twenty yards further back with the attacker running at a set defence rather than a scrambling one. That is an improvement and it is not a solution, and sides that drop deep and then concede exactly the same way are usually surprised by this.
The second is that a permanently deep line surrenders the entire midfield, which invites sustained possession, which produces more circulation, which produces more switches, which produces more isolations. Depth reduces the value of each isolation and increases the number of them, and the net effect is not obviously favourable.
The workable answer is a mid-block with a variable line, and the variability tied to a defined trigger rather than to a phase. The line sits higher when the ball is under genuine pressure and the passer cannot lift his head, because a passer who cannot see cannot play the ball behind. The line drops the moment the ball-carrier is free, and it drops together, on a call, without waiting to see what he does. Getting a back four to read the same cue simultaneously is the single hardest thing to rehearse in this plan and it is worth the rehearsal time, because it removes the condition rather than merely reducing it.
There is one further point that gets missed. The line height matters less than the distance between the line and the midfield in front of it. A back four sitting deep with a midfield sitting high has created a band of space that a switch lands in perfectly, and the attacker receiving there is facing a retreating defence with room to build speed. Compactness between the lines is worth more against this profile than absolute depth, and a side that must choose should choose compactness.
The individual assignment
Now the duel, and specifically who takes it.
The defender profile that actually fits
The reflex is to select the fastest available full-back, and the reflex is understandable and roughly half right.
Pace is genuinely useful in the retreating duel, because a defender who can survive the first three strides gets to keep defending, and a defender who cannot is eliminated immediately. It is not the primary attribute, though, and the reason is that in a working version of this plan the isolated retreating duel occurs less often than the reputation of the fixture suggests. If the plan is functioning, most receptions are contested with a second defender already in place, and the attribute that matters in those situations is not top speed.
The primary attribute is distance control. A defender who can maintain a gap he could hold if the attacker accelerated, who does not close it out of anxiety and does not open it out of fear, has converted an unwinnable duel into a delaying action. This is a dispositional quality more than an athletic one and it can be coached, which is why a technically disciplined defender of moderate pace often performs better against this profile than a quicker one who commits.
The secondary attribute is the willingness to be beaten in the agreed direction without escalating. A defender who has ushered the attacker toward the byline and then, at the last moment, lunges to prevent the cross has undone the entire sequence for no gain, because the cross from that position was the agreed outcome. Accepting a poor-looking outcome calmly is a specific temperament and it is worth selecting for.
The third attribute, and the one most sides underweight, is the ability to recover after being beaten. Being beaten is not the end of the sequence, and a defender who reacts to it by stopping, appealing, or slowing has converted a survivable moment into a goal. Immediate re-engagement, from behind and toward the inside, frequently forces a poorer final action even when the defender cannot regain the position.
Footedness barely matters here and the reason is worth stating, because a left-footed defender is often demanded for this fixture. The attacker’s route is decided by the defender’s hips and distance rather than by which foot he prefers, and the moments where footedness pays, blocking and clearing, occur after the important decisions have already been made.
What the full-back is actually asked to do
Four instructions, in order of the sequence.
While the ball is on the far side and the attacker is holding a high, wide position, the full-back’s job is to hold a distance and check his own support. He should know, without looking twice, whether his near midfielder is pre-positioned. If the answer is no, he defends differently: deeper, more conservatively, showing outside from the start, accepting a lower ceiling on the outcome because the plan is not available.
While the switch is in the air, he closes ground. This is the aggressive component and it is only affordable when the support is in place. Closing ground during the flight means the attacker’s first touch is taken with a defender within range rather than in comfort, and it removes the hang-time advantage that step four of the manufacture depends on. The arriving angle matters: he closes toward the inside shoulder, so that the easiest available route is the one toward the touchline.
At the moment of the first touch, he stops closing. This is the transition that defenders get wrong most often. Momentum carried into the duel is what a change of direction eliminates, so the closing must convert into a controlled, balanced, slightly retreating stance before contact rather than after it.
During the carry, he retreats at an angle, keeps the distance, and does not tackle. The success criterion he is given is not the ball. It is reaching the byline area still goal-side and still on his feet.
Should the defender stand off or engage?
Engage during the flight of the pass, stand off once the ball is controlled. Closing ground while the ball is airborne removes the comfortable reception the sequence is built on. Continuing to close after the first touch turns a controlled delay into a duel decided by acceleration, which is the contest the plan exists to avoid.
The collective triggers
Individual instructions are useless without shared triggers, because the entire plan depends on several players acting at the same moment on the same cue.
Trigger one: the ball crosses the middle
When the ball moves from the far half of the pitch toward the middle third, the far-side midfielder stops supporting and starts holding. This is a positional trigger and it should be called, out loud, by the nearest centre-back or the goalkeeper, because the far-side midfielder is often facing the ball and cannot see the space behind him.
Trigger two: the attacker settles high and wide
When the wide attacker takes up a fixed high, wide position and holds it for a few seconds, the near-side midfielder pre-positions. He does not mark, he does not track, he occupies the inside channel between the full-back and the centre-back, at an angle from which he can step forward into the attacker’s inside route.
The distinguishing detail: he stands behind the line of the full-back, not level with him. Level produces a flat pair that a single touch can split. Behind produces a stagger, which means beating the full-back leads directly into a second defender rather than into space.
Trigger three: the switch leaves the foot
The moment the diagonal is struck, three things happen simultaneously. The full-back closes ground toward the inside shoulder. The covering centre-back drops and narrows, taking a position in the diagonal corridor rather than holding the line. And the far-side of the defence begins sliding across, but the far-side midfielder does not, because his job has not changed.
The simultaneity is the point. A plan where these three actions happen sequentially, each player reacting to the previous one, is a plan that arrives about a second and a half late, which is exactly the margin that decides these sequences.
Trigger four: the byline
Once the attacker has been ushered toward the byline and is inside the final few yards of the pitch, the priority shifts entirely to the box. The covering centre-back stops tracking the carrier and takes the cutback zone. The far centre-back holds the far post area. The near-side midfielder, who has been covering the inside route, recovers into the space in front of the six-yard box rather than following the ball to the corner.
This handover is frequently botched, and the specific error is that two defenders follow the ball into the corner while the cutback zone empties. The instruction that prevents it is blunt: once the ball is inside the final few yards, exactly one player pressures it and everyone else defends the box.
The other supply routes
The switch is the primary manufacture and it is not the only one. A plan that closes the diagonal and nothing else will hold for a half and then start leaking, because good sides carry alternatives and use them once the primary route stops paying.
Three alternative supplies recur and each requires a small addition to the plan rather than a new plan.
The half-space entry
Instead of a long diagonal, the ball is played into the wide attacker from a central or half-space position, over a shorter distance, into his feet rather than into space. This arrives faster, gives your full-back less closing time, and produces a reception with the defender closer but the attacker facing a smaller field.
The counter is the near-side midfielder’s shadow, which has been described as a pre-positioning instruction and now also becomes a shading one. He is standing in the inside channel; he angles his body so the direct lane from the half-space into the attacker’s feet passes through or near him. He is not moving to intercept, he is making the entry pass an unattractive option so the ball goes wider, later, or backward.
A useful detail: against the half-space entry, the full-back should be tighter rather than deeper, because the reception is closer to him and the ball behind is less immediately available from that angle. The distances change even though the principles do not, and telling a defender to hold the same starting position against every supply route is telling him to be wrong half the time.
The underlap and the third-man run
A more sophisticated supply uses a midfielder or full-back running inside the wide attacker, which drags your pre-positioned midfielder toward the run and opens the channel he was occupying. The ball then goes to the wide attacker with his inside route free, which is exactly the outcome the pre-positioning was built to prevent.
This is the response that most cleanly beats a rigid version of the plan, and the answer is a handover rather than a chase. The near-side midfielder does not follow the underlapping runner. The runner is picked up by whoever owns the space he enters, typically the holding midfielder or the covering centre-back who is already dropping. The near-side midfielder holds his channel.
The instruction has to be explicit because the instinct is overwhelming. A player running past you into your defensive third is very difficult to ignore, and the moment your midfielder turns to follow, the plan has been dismantled by a run that never received the ball. That is a cheap way for the opponent to win and it works constantly against sides that have not rehearsed the handover.
The direct ball from deep
The third alternative is the long ball played early from a centre-back or goalkeeper, into the channel outside your full-back, before your shape has finished adjusting. It skips the circulation entirely and it is the natural response to a block that refuses to be dragged.
The answer is the covering centre-back and the line height rule. If your line drops when the ball-carrier is free, the ball played early from deep arrives with a compact defence and a covering body, which turns it into a chase rather than a duel. If the line is high because the passer was under pressure, the pass is unlikely to be accurate enough to matter.
The danger case is the middle version: a passer under moderate pressure, a line that is neither high nor dropped, and a defence that has not decided. That is a communication failure rather than a tactical one, and it is why the drop should be called by a single voice rather than agreed by consensus.
Which supply are you actually facing?
Count the entries across two matches. If most dangerous receptions follow long circulation and a diagonal, the primary plan applies as written. If they follow short half-space entries, tighten the full-back and lean on the midfielder’s shadow. If they follow direct balls from deep, the line-height rule carries more of the load than the pre-positioning does.
Rotations and the moving starting position
Everything so far assumes he starts wide on the left. Good sides move their best wide attacker, and a plan tied to a location rather than to a player will be walked around.
Three rotations matter.
The first is the drift inside, where the wide attacker takes a position in the half-space and the full-back or a midfielder provides the width outside him. This changes the duel from a wide one to a central one, removes your full-back from the picture, and puts the attacker in front of a centre-back or a holding midfielder who is far less prepared for him.
The answer is a zonal handover rather than a man-marking switch. Your full-back does not follow him inside. Your holding midfielder takes him while he is in that zone, your full-back picks up the player providing the width, and your covering centre-back stays with the corridor. That is three players adjusting simultaneously and it needs rehearsal, and the alternative, a full-back tracking a wide attacker into central areas, produces a hole on the flank that the overlapping player occupies immediately.
The second rotation is the swap of flanks, either permanent for a phase or temporary within a possession. The pre-positioning instruction moves with him, and the practical problem is that it cannot be communicated mid-possession. The workable approach is to give both wide midfielders the instruction from the start, with the trigger being the attacker’s presence on their flank rather than their own identity. Then the swap requires no communication at all, because both players already know the rule.
The third rotation is the deep drop, where he comes toward the ball into midfield to receive facing his own goal. This is the least dangerous of the three and it should be treated as a small success rather than a new problem, because a wide attacker receiving with his back to goal thirty-five yards out is not doing the thing that makes him dangerous. The instruction is not to follow him. Let him have the ball there, keep the shape, and be ready for the immediate return pass and the run in behind, which is the actual purpose of the drop.
The plan, phase by phase
The triggers above are the mechanics. This section runs them in sequence, in the order a match presents them, so a coach can walk his players through a possession from first pass to conclusion.
Phase one: their goalkeeper has the ball
Nothing about this plan requires a high press, and a side that presses badly against a team comfortable in possession will be played through and will arrive at every subsequent phase in disarray. So the first decision is honest self-assessment: can your front line press in a coordinated way for the duration of the match? If not, do not.
The alternative is a controlled mid-block that begins engaging around the halfway line. What matters in this phase is not where you engage but what your shape looks like while you wait. The far-side wide player is already inside. The near-side midfielder is already aware of where the wide attacker has positioned himself. Neither of these costs anything during a phase where nothing is happening, and both are already in place when something starts happening, which is the whole point.
One specific instruction is worth adding here for sides that do press. If you press, press the side the wide attacker is on. Forcing the opponent to build away from him lengthens the circulation, which means more passes before a switch is available, which means more time for your shape to reset. Pressing the opposite side forces the ball toward him quickly, which is the opposite of what you want.
Phase two: they build on the far flank
This is the setup phase and it is the phase where matches are quietly lost.
The ball is on the opposite side. Your block shifts. Everything looks controlled, and the danger is entirely invisible, which is why the discipline required here is so difficult to sustain. Your far-side midfielder is doing nothing. He is not pressing, not supporting, not involved. He will feel useless and he may be told by a teammate to get across.
His instruction is to hold, and the coaching job is to make sure he understands why, because an instruction he does not believe in will not survive the seventieth minute.
The centre-backs shift, the full-backs shift, the near-side central midfielder shifts partially. The near-side full-back, the one who will eventually be isolated, does not push forward to press and does not tuck inside. He holds a position from which he can meet the attacker’s reception, which means slightly narrower than the attacker but not so narrow that a straight ball down the line beats him.
The second instruction in this phase concerns your own attacking players. If your side wins the ball here, the exit is toward the flank the attacker occupies, not away from it, because attacking into his side pins him and forces defensive work, and because the space behind him is the largest available. This is the one attacking instruction inside a defensive blueprint and it is worth including because it reduces the number of times phase two occurs at all.
Phase three: the switch
The moment the diagonal is played, the plan is either working or it is not, and the next two seconds decide which.
The full-back closes toward the inside shoulder. He is not sprinting to intercept; he is closing enough distance that the reception is contested and arriving at an angle that pre-selects the outside route. He must arrive balanced. A full-back who arrives at full speed has given the attacker a free elimination.
The covering centre-back drops and narrows into the corridor. This is the action that feels most wrong, because it appears to break the line, and it is the action that most reliably prevents the highest-value outcome. He is not marking anyone. He is standing in the place the attacker intends to arrive after beating the full-back inside.
The near-side midfielder holds his pre-position. He does not step to press the receiver, because stepping vacates the inside channel and the inside channel is the whole reason he is there.
If all three happen simultaneously, the attacker receives with a defender in range, an inside route occupied, and a covering body behind. That is not a stopped attacker; it is an attacker whose best available option is a route the defence chose.
Phase four: the carry
He has the ball, he is facing forward, and he is running at your full-back. The plan for this phase is short because the plan for this phase is mostly restraint.
Retreat. Keep the distance. Angle the retreat so the inside gets progressively harder and the outside gets progressively easier. Do not tackle. Do not turn your shoulders square. Do not reach with the near foot, which is the specific technical error that converts a controlled retreat into a beaten defender, and which happens because reaching feels like defending.
The covering centre-back tracks the carry laterally, staying inside and slightly behind, ready to meet the attacker if he cuts. The near-side midfielder recovers on the inside, behind the play, toward the top of the box rather than toward the ball.
If the attacker goes outside, the plan is working. If he goes inside, he meets the centre-back, which is a less dangerous outcome than it feels like in the moment, and the full-back’s job becomes immediate re-engagement from behind.
Phase five: the byline and the box
Once the carry reaches the final few yards, the plan changes character entirely and the change should be called out loud.
One player pressures the ball. Everyone else defends the box. The cutback zone, the area around the penalty spot and just behind it, is the priority, and it is owned by the covering centre-back. The near post is owned by the goalkeeper and the front defender. The far post is owned by the far centre-back and the far full-back, who has by now tucked in.
The cutback is the delivery that matters. A ball pulled back from the byline arrives behind the defensive line, into an area where attackers are running forward and defenders are running backward, and it produces the best chances available from wide areas by a considerable margin. Everything in phase five exists to occupy that area rather than to block the delivery.
Phase six: the regain
The plan does not end when you win the ball, and the six seconds after the regain determine whether the whole sequence was worth executing.
The exit is away from his side and forward. A side that regains possession in its own box and immediately plays a short pass sideways into the zone the attacker has just vacated is inviting an immediate counter-press with the most dangerous player in the vicinity. The instruction is clean: first pass forward or wide to the opposite flank, and if neither is available, out of play.
The second regain instruction is about your own full-back. He has just executed a demanding retreating duel and his instinct will be to recover his breath. That is exactly when the opponent’s counter-press wins the ball back and immediately attacks the same flank against a defender who is out of position and out of air. Give him a fixed recovery position rather than a discretionary one.
Transition: the version of this problem nobody plans for
Everything above assumes a settled defensive shape. The most dangerous version of this player is the one that occurs in transition, when your side has just lost the ball, your shape is stretched, and the isolation does not need to be manufactured because it already exists.
The transition threat has a different structure and needs a different intervention, and the intervention happens during your own possession.
Rest defence
The number and position of players you leave behind while attacking is a defensive decision made in the attacking phase, and against this profile it is the single most consequential one.
The specific requirement is that the flank he occupies is never left with a single defender during your own attacks. If your right-back pushes high, someone covers behind him: a holding midfielder shifting across, a centre-back sliding wide, or a wide player staying back. Which one depends on your structure. That there must be one is not negotiable, because a turnover into an already-existing isolation gives you none of the interruption points this blueprint depends on.
Where you lose the ball
A side facing this profile should treat ball security in its own half as a defensive priority rather than a stylistic preference, and should be explicit about it.
That means fewer short build-up sequences under pressure in your own third, more willingness to go long from goal kicks, and an instruction to the deepest midfielder that the safe pass is the correct pass in that zone regardless of how it looks. Coaches who prefer to play out will resist this and the resistance is understandable, and the arithmetic is unfriendly: a turnover thirty yards from your own goal against a side with an elite counter-attacking wide threat is among the highest-cost errors available in a match.
The first five seconds
Immediately after a loss, one player delays the first pass. Not a full counter-press, which most sides cannot sustain and which leaves worse gaps when it fails, but a single immediate engagement whose only purpose is to prevent the ball being played forward cleanly in the first two seconds.
Two seconds is enough for a back line to reorganize from stretched to compact, and it is often the difference between an isolation with the defence facing the wrong way and a settled duel with cover. It is the cheapest intervention in the entire blueprint and it is skipped constantly, because the player closest to the ball at the moment of a turnover is usually the one who just lost it and is usually reacting emotionally rather than positionally.
How do you defend the transition threat?
During your own possession, not after the turnover. Never leave his flank with a single defender while attacking, treat ball security in your own half as a defensive instruction rather than a preference, and have one player delay the first pass immediately after any loss. Two seconds of delay converts a broken defence into an organized one.
The set-piece addendum
Dead balls change the arithmetic in two directions and both are worth planning.
Your attacking corners and free kicks
A side facing an elite isolation attacker cannot commit everyone to an attacking corner, because the cleared ball produces exactly the conditions the counter-plan spends ninety minutes preventing: a stretched defence, no rest structure, and an attacker already positioned high.
Leave two back rather than one. That is a genuine cost to your attacking threat and it is the correct trade, because the alternative outcome is a two against one against your goalkeeper. The two are typically a centre-back and a midfielder, and their positions matter: one on the halfway line centrally to contest the first pass, one deeper and toward the flank the attacker occupies.
The player contesting the first pass is doing the same job as the five-second delay described above, and it is the same principle appearing in a different phase. Whoever plays the ball forward after a cleared corner should be under pressure. If he is not, the outlet reaches the attacker facing a defence that is thirty yards out of position.
Their attacking corners and free kicks
Here the question is whether he is a marking concern in your own box, and the honest answer is that he is not a primary aerial threat, which frees a defender.
That freed defender should not be assigned to another attacker by default. He is more valuable as a dedicated second-phase player, positioned at the edge of the box to contest cleared balls and, critically, to be the first line of the counter-counter if the ball breaks. A side that defends a corner successfully and then concedes a transition three passes later has not defended the corner.
Wide free kicks in your own half
The situation worth rehearsing is the wide free kick taken quickly. A quick restart into a wide area, against a defence still organizing, reproduces the isolation without any of the four manufacturing steps.
The instruction is that the near-side full-back does not join a defensive wall or drift toward the ball on any free kick in your own half until the ball is dead and the shape is set, and that one designated player stands over the ball to prevent a quick restart. That is a small, unglamorous rule that removes an entire category of conceded chances.
When the plan fails: the fallback ladder
Plans fail in specific ways and each way has a specific answer. Abandoning the whole approach because one component broke is the most common in-match error, and this section exists to prevent it.
Fallback one: the far-side midfielder cannot hold his position
Signal: the opponent works repeated overloads on the ball side, creating two against ones on your near flank without needing the switch at all.
This means your cap on the shift is too aggressive for your personnel or for this opponent. The answer is not to abandon the cap; it is to move the responsibility. Instead of a wide midfielder holding, use the far-side full-back as the holding body and let the wide midfielder shift normally. You lose width in your own attacks on that flank and you keep the structural protection, which is the right way round.
If that also fails, the shape is wrong for the personnel. Move to a back five, accept the loss of a midfielder, and use the extra defender specifically as the pre-positioned second. This is a downgrade and it is a controlled one.
Fallback two: he receives cleanly and turns repeatedly
Signal: the full-back’s closing during the flight is not arriving, and the attacker is taking his first touch unpressured three or four times in a row.
Two possible causes with two different answers. If the full-back is starting from too deep, move his resting position five yards higher and accept the ball over the top more readily, because the ball over the top with a covering centre-back is a lower-value threat than a comfortable reception facing forward. If the full-back is starting from a reasonable position and simply not arriving, the problem is the trigger rather than the position, and the fix is a called cue from the goalkeeper or centre-back at the moment the switch is struck.
Fallback three: he keeps arriving in the inside lane
Signal: the sequences are ending with the ball in the inside channel and shots from central positions rather than deliveries from the corner.
This is the covering centre-back holding the line instead of dropping into the corridor, and it is the most common single failure in this plan. The instruction has to be repeated explicitly and it has to include permission: he is allowed to leave the line, he will not be blamed for the offside consequences, and the corridor is his priority.
If the centre-back is executing and the attacker is still arriving inside, the near-side midfielder’s pre-position is too wide. Move him two yards narrower and accept that the outside route becomes easier.
Fallback four: the plan is working and you are still under siege
Signal: the sequences are ending in deep crosses and byline deliveries as designed, and the opponent is producing thirty of them, and the volume is starting to convert.
This is a second-ball problem rather than a wide problem. Deliveries pile up when the attacking side retains possession after each one, which means your box exits are failing. The fix is at the edge of the box: one player positioned to collect clearances, a defined clearing direction, and a front player holding a position that gives the clearance somewhere to go. Sides in this situation usually respond by adding another defender, which increases the number of bodies in the box and further reduces the chance of an exit, which makes the siege worse.
Fallback five: nothing is working
At some point a coach has to be able to say that the plan is not holding and change the terms rather than the details. The controlled version of that is to move to a back five with the wide centre-back positioned specifically as the pre-positioned second on his flank, drop the line, and shorten the pitch vertically.
This concedes possession, territory, and most of your attacking structure. It is a plan for taking a point rather than winning a match and it should be described that way to the players so they understand what has changed. What it does reliably is remove the space behind, which removes the acceleration advantage, which reduces the highest-value outcomes even though it increases the volume of possession against you.
What you concede on purpose
Every element of this blueprint buys something with something, and a coach who cannot state the price will panic when it is charged.
You concede the far side
This is the largest payment and it is unavoidable. Capping the shift means the ball-side of the pitch has fewer defenders than the opponent has attackers on some possessions, and a good side will find that. You will watch two against ones develop on the flank away from the wide attacker and you will know that a full shift would have prevented them.
Accept it. The two against one on the far flank produces a cross from a wide area against a set defence. The isolation you prevented produces a shot from the inside lane against a scrambling one. Those outcomes are not comparable and trading the second for the first is the plan working exactly as intended.
You concede deep crosses and byline deliveries
The retreating duel is designed to end in a delivery from a wide position. That is a success and it will not look like one, because a cross into your own box looks dangerous regardless of its actual value, and because the player who conceded it is visibly the player who was beaten.
The specific number to be comfortable with is high. A match in which this plan works may involve fifteen or twenty deliveries from wide areas, most of them from deep or from the byline. If your box is organized and your second-ball structure holds, that is a defensible match.
You concede a body in your own attack
The pre-positioned near midfielder is a player subtracted from your build-up on that flank. Your attacks down that side will be less frequent and less numerous, and if you are chasing a match this becomes a genuine argument for changing the plan rather than persisting.
The point to be clear about is that this is a trade rather than a flaw. A coach who wants the protection and also wants the attacking body has not been offered that option by anybody.
You concede the ball over the top
Moving the full-back’s resting position higher and closing during the flight both increase your exposure to the straight ball played in behind. That is a real threat and it is a lower-value one, because the ball over the top with a covering centre-back present produces a chase rather than a duel, and a chase toward the goalkeeper is a poorer outcome for the attacker than a duel facing a retreating defender in space.
What you do not concede
The list of things this plan refuses to give up is short and it is the reason the concessions above are worth making. It does not concede the inside lane. It does not concede the cutback zone. It does not concede a reception facing forward with nobody within fifteen yards. Those three are where the goals come from, and a plan that protects those three while surrendering almost everything else is a plan that will hold.
The goalkeeper’s job
Goalkeeping instructions against wide attackers are usually reduced to “be ready for the cross,” which is not an instruction. Against this profile the goalkeeper has four distinct responsibilities and each has a defined starting position.
The near post on the byline drive
When the attacker reaches the byline on the goalkeeper’s right, the most dangerous immediate delivery is not the cross, it is the drive across the face of goal or into the near-post gap. The keeper’s position must be set early, tight to the near post, and he must resist the pull toward the centre of his goal that every instinct produces when a player reaches the byline.
The reason to set early is that the delivery from that position arrives fast and flat, and a goalkeeper who is still adjusting when it is struck cannot get his feet set. Early and slightly wrong beats late and correct.
The cutback
Once the near post is protected, the cutback is the primary threat, and the goalkeeper’s job here is mostly not to move. The instinct on a cutback is to advance toward the receiving area, and advancing on a ball pulled back to the penalty spot is close to indefensible, because the shot can be struck early and the keeper is caught between his line and the ball.
His job is to hold a position that covers both posts against a first-time shot from the cutback zone, communicate the receiving runner to the covering centre-back, and stay big. The defenders own the cutback zone; the goalkeeper owns the goal.
The through ball behind a high line
When the line sits high, the goalkeeper’s starting position becomes part of the defensive line, and his decision to leave the box has to be made early or not at all. Against an attacker with this level of acceleration, a goalkeeper who starts his decision late will arrive at the ball at the same moment the attacker does, in his own penalty area, which is the worst available outcome.
The rule is to decide during the pass rather than after it, and to commit fully or not at all.
The one against one inside the box
If the attacker gets inside the box facing goal with the ball, the goalkeeper’s decision is a delay decision rather than a save decision. Rushing produces a simple finish around him or a foul. Standing still produces a shot at a large target.
The workable approach is to close ground while the ball is not under the attacker’s foot, stop when it is, stay tall, and delay the commitment as long as possible, because delay brings recovering defenders into the picture and because a shot taken later is a shot taken with more bodies in the way. This is the same distance-control principle the full-back is using, applied to a smaller space.
How this plan degrades with a weaker squad
Everything above assumes players who can hold a shape, read a shared trigger, and follow a positional instruction under fatigue. Most squads cannot do all three, and a plan that requires all three will fail in a way that looks like a lack of effort and is actually a lack of fit.
Here is what to keep and what to drop, in priority order.
Keep: the pre-positioned near midfielder
This survives at every level and it is the single highest-return component. It requires no fitness, no speed, and no simultaneous decision-making. It requires one player to stand in a specific place and stay there, which is the easiest instruction in football to give and one of the hardest to make a player believe in.
Sell it to him as a role rather than a restriction. He is the reason the opponent’s best player does not get a one against one. That framing survives; “stay there and do not go forward” does not.
Keep: no tackling in the retreating duel
Also survives at every level, and the mechanism for making it stick is to change the success criterion rather than to repeat the instruction. Tell the full-back he is judged on whether the attacker ends up in the corner rather than on whether he wins the ball. Defenders dive in because they are measured on tackles; measure something else and the behaviour changes within a few weeks.
Modify: the cap on the block’s shift
The relational version, where the far-side midfielder judges his position against the attacker’s distance to the space, requires a level of reading that many sides do not have. Replace it with the landmark version: he does not cross the far edge of the centre circle. Crude, imprecise, and roughly right most of the time, which is a good trade.
Drop: closing during the flight of the switch
This is the component to abandon first, and abandoning it is not a small loss, it is simply a necessary one. Closing during the flight requires the full-back to arrive balanced at exactly the right moment, and a defender who gets the timing wrong is eliminated immediately and comprehensively. Against a side without the technical control to execute it, the safer instruction is to retreat from the start, concede the reception, and defend the carry.
The cost is that the attacker receives comfortably every time. The benefit is that he receives with a defender in front of him and a covering body behind, which at amateur level is usually enough, because the finishing and final-ball quality that punishes a merely adequate defensive position is not present at every level.
Drop: the variable line height
Getting a back four to drop together on a shared cue is a rehearsal-heavy behaviour that most part-time sides will not acquire in a season. Replace it with a fixed, moderately deep line, accept the possession consequences, and spend the training time on the two components above.
The amateur version in one paragraph
Sit in a mid-block with a fixed line. Your wide midfielder on the attacker’s side stands inside and behind your full-back whenever the opponent has the ball, and stays there. Your far-side wide player does not cross the centre circle when the ball is on the other flank. Your full-back retreats, does not tackle, and is judged on whether the sequence ends in the corner. Once the ball reaches the byline, one player pressures it and everyone else defends the space around the penalty spot. That is five instructions, none of them requires an exceptional athlete, and together they remove most of the value from the profile this article is about.

The three clips that tell you whether the isolation is manufactured
Before applying any of this, an analyst should confirm that the profile in front of him is what this article assumes. That takes three clips and about fifteen minutes.
Clip one: a switch that produced a dangerous sequence
Rewind eight seconds from the moment the wide attacker receives. Count the passes on the far side before the switch. If there were four or more, the isolation was manufactured deliberately and this blueprint applies directly. If the switch came after one or two passes, the side is switching opportunistically rather than systematically, and your cap on the shift matters less than your full-back’s starting position.
Clip two: a possession where he did not receive
Find a sustained possession in which the wide attacker was not involved and watch what he does. If he holds a fixed high, wide position throughout, the pre-positioning trigger is straightforward, because his location is predictable. If he rotates inside, drops deep, or swaps flanks, the trigger has to be handover-based rather than position-based, and your near midfielder needs a rule for when to pass him on.
Clip three: a transition
Find a turnover in the middle third and watch the first three seconds. Note where he starts, how quickly he begins running, and who plays the first pass. This tells you whether the transition threat is a primary or secondary concern for your rest-defence planning, and it names the passer you need to pressure in those first two seconds.
Three clips, three planning decisions. An analyst who does this arrives at the meeting with instructions rather than impressions, which is the difference between a report that changes Saturday and a report that gets filed.
Five arguments about defending this profile, settled
Each of these circulates constantly, each contains something true, and each leads somewhere unhelpful if it is accepted whole.
“Only an equally quick defender can cope”
The observation is that acceleration is the decisive quality in the isolated duel, which is correct.
The conclusion is wrong because it treats the isolated duel as the whole problem, and because it is not actually true that pace resolves it. A defender matched for straight-line speed still loses a meaningful share of static one against ones, because the attacker chooses the moment, the direction, and the first movement, and the defender is reacting. Reaction cost is worth more than the speed difference between two professional athletes in almost every case.
What pace does buy is survivability after being beaten, which is genuinely valuable and is a different thing from winning the duel. A quick defender who is beaten can re-engage and force a poorer final action; a slower one cannot.
The verdict: select for distance control first, recovery pace second, top speed third. And note that in a functioning version of this plan the isolated duel occurs less often than the pre-match conversation assumes, which changes the weighting further.
“He is only dangerous with space”
The observation is that his threat scales with available grass, which is true and is the basis of this entire blueprint.
The conclusion that usually follows, that removing space solves him, is too strong. Removing space reduces the value of each sequence and does not remove the sequences. A deep block still gets switched, still leaves a full-back one against one, and still concedes a duel, only in a more crowded area where the outcomes are cutbacks and short combinations rather than runs in behind. Those outcomes are less valuable and they are not nothing, and a side that expects a deep block to produce a quiet afternoon will be surprised.
There is also the compaction effect. A deep block shortens the distance between the attacker’s receiving position and the goal, which means less space and less ground to cover before reaching a dangerous area.
The verdict: space reduction is a large part of the answer and it is not the whole answer, and the components that matter most, the pre-positioned second and the capped shift, work at any line height.
“Doubling up is the obvious answer”
The observation is arithmetic and correct at the moment of contact.
The problem is timing and cost. A double that arrives during the carry is not a double, it is a second defender who can be eliminated with one pass while his own zone stands empty. A double that is permanent hands the far side of the pitch away and is precisely what a side that circulates and switches is built to punish. The switch exists as a mechanism because opponents double.
There is a version of doubling that works and it is not usually what people mean by the word. Pre-positioning a second defender in the inside channel, before the ball arrives, is a structural double that costs nothing in the moment because the player was standing there anyway. That is the version this blueprint uses, and it is a shape rather than a reaction.
The verdict: double structurally and in advance, never reactively and never permanently. And be clear that even the structural version is not designed to win the ball, it is designed to remove one route.
“A deep block neutralises him”
This is the most confidently asserted of the five and the one that most often produces a bad afternoon.
A deep block removes the run in behind, which is real. It does not remove the isolation, the reception facing forward, the carry at a retreating defender, or the cutback, and it introduces two new problems. The first is that a deep block invites sustained possession, which produces more circulation and therefore more switches, so the number of isolations rises even as the value of each one falls. The second is that a deep block compresses your own side into the area where cutbacks are most dangerous, which raises the value of the delivery you were most trying to prevent.
The verdict: depth is one component among several and it is oversold as a solution. A mid-block with a capped shift and a pre-positioned second concedes fewer high-value sequences than a deep block without them.
“His end product makes the problem manageable”
This position circulates widely and it is the one this article deliberately does not resolve, because resolving it properly requires a careful examination of what the limitation actually is, under what conditions it appears, what evidence a viewer can check, and what his own team does to compensate for it. That examination belongs to the weakness anatomy for this subject, which treats it as the substantial question it is rather than as a talking point.
What can be said here, as a planning matter, is narrower and it is important. A counter-plan should never be built on the assumption that an elite attacker will not finish. Plans built on an opponent’s expected failure are not plans, they are bets, and the specific failure mode is that a side which relies on a poor final action defends with less urgency in the box, which converts a low-probability chance into a higher-probability one.
Build the plan to prevent the situation. If the final action then goes against him, that is a bonus you did not depend on.
Managing the plan during the match
The first fifteen minutes
The question is whether the manufacture you prepared for is the manufacture you are getting. If the opponent is switching after long circulation, the plan applies as written. If they are attacking centrally, or feeding the wide attacker with short entries from the half-space rather than long diagonals, your far-side midfielder is holding a position against a threat that is not coming, and he should be released.
That adjustment should be made early. A wasted player for seventy-five minutes is more expensive than the risk of releasing him too soon, and if the switches begin later you can reinstate the instruction.
The concession check
At about the half hour, ask whether the concessions are the ones you agreed to. Are the deliveries coming from deep and from the byline, or have they crept into the inside lane? Is the far-side two against one producing crosses from wide, or has the far-side attacker started receiving in the half-space?
Plans degrade at their edges before they fail visibly, and the concession is where the degradation shows first. Two consecutive sequences ending in the inside lane is a signal to check the covering centre-back’s position, not a signal to change the shape.
Half time
The genuine half-time question is usually about personnel rather than plan. A full-back who has been beaten repeatedly may be executing correctly against a task that is too large, in which case the answer is more support. He may be committing early, in which case the answer is an instruction. He may be physically compromised, which against this profile happens earlier than against most opponents, and which no instruction repairs.
The diagnostic question is where he is being beaten. Beaten inside repeatedly means the cover is absent or he is angling wrongly. Beaten outside with the cover in place is the plan working. Beaten in both directions without a pattern is fatigue, and persisting with a fatigued full-back against this profile out of loyalty is a decision that gets punished.
Protecting a lead
Late in a match with a lead, the instinct is to drop everything deep. Against this profile that instinct is defensible and it is not free, for the reasons set out in the deep-block discussion above.
The better late-match adjustment is to keep the block shape and add a body to the flank he occupies, typically by moving to a back five with the wide centre-back functioning as a permanent pre-positioned second. This preserves the structure that has been working while adding the protection, rather than replacing a functioning plan with a different one at the moment when your players are most tired and least able to learn something new.
The rule of thumb is worth stating plainly: late in a match, add to the plan rather than replacing it. A tired squad can absorb one more instruction. It cannot absorb a new system.
The physical dimension of the assignment
Defending this profile for ninety minutes is one of the heaviest individual loads available in the sport, and plans that ignore it hold for an hour and then collapse in a way that gets blamed on concentration.
The load has a specific shape. It is not primarily total distance, which is usually higher for midfielders. It is repeated maximal accelerations and decelerations performed reactively, at moments chosen by somebody else, which is the most costly combination in physiological terms. A defender who initiates a sprint recruits differently from a defender who reacts to one, and reacting is what this assignment consists of almost entirely.
Two consequences follow for the plan.
The first is that decision quality degrades before running output does. A full-back who is still covering the ground but has begun committing early, standing square, reaching with the near foot, or reacting late to the entry pass is already fatigued, and waiting for visible labouring is waiting far too long. The observable early signs are technical rather than physical, and a coach watching for heavy legs will miss them.
The second is that the support structure matters more in the final half hour, which is precisely when most sides withdraw it. A coach who pre-positions his near midfielder for sixty minutes and then pushes him forward at the hour, chasing a goal, has removed the plan at the moment it was hardest to execute without it. If the plan is going to be abandoned late, that should be a decision with a stated reason, not a side effect of an attacking substitution.
The practical response is to design the sustainable version rather than the optimal one. A slightly less aggressive plan that survives ninety minutes beats an excellent plan that survives sixty-five. That may mean dropping the airborne closing from the outset, planning a full-back substitution at a fixed point rather than waiting for evidence, or accepting a deeper resting position throughout.
There is a squad-building consequence too. A full-back facing this profile in a congested run of fixtures is a rotation candidate in a way that other positions are not, because the specific load does not recover on the same timescale as general running volume. Coaches who rotate by minutes played rather than by load type will under-rotate exactly the position that needs it most.
Communicating the plan to the players
This blueprint asks players to do several things that feel wrong, and an instruction a player does not believe in will be abandoned at the first uncomfortable moment. The communication is therefore part of the plan rather than a preliminary to it.
Three instructions attract resistance and each needs its rationale attached in the player’s own terms.
Telling a full-back not to tackle sounds like telling him not to compete. The version that lands is not a principle about tackle success rates, it is a picture: if you dive in and miss, there is nobody behind you and he is in the box. Defenders understand consequences more readily than probabilities.
Telling a near-side midfielder to hold a covering position while his teammates attack sounds like a demotion. The version that lands is that he is the reason the opponent’s most dangerous player never gets a clean one against one, and that the job is visible only in what does not happen. Give the role a name inside the squad if that helps, because a named role is defended by the player who holds it and an unnamed instruction is not.
Telling a covering centre-back to drop out of the line sounds like breaking the offside trap he has spent his career learning to hold. The version that lands includes explicit permission and an explicit removal of blame: you are allowed to leave the line, and if the offside consequences go against us, that is my decision and not your error.
The second communication task is describing what success will look like, in advance and in detail. Tell them the opponent will beat the full-back sometimes. Tell them the deep crosses are the agreed price and that fifteen or twenty of them is a normal afternoon. Tell them the far side will occasionally be a two against one. A squad that has been told what the working version looks like will hold the plan through a bad opening twenty minutes. A squad that has not will begin improvising, and improvisation is exactly what the opponent’s structure is built to profit from.
The third task is the review, and it should evaluate against the instruction rather than the result. A full-back beaten while executing correctly has done his job. A full-back who won a tackle by diving in has not, even though the tackle came off, and praising it teaches the squad to gamble at the worst moments. Reviewing against instructions is slower, less satisfying, and the only method that produces a side able to hold a plan under pressure in the eightieth minute.
Why does the plan need to be sold rather than issued?
Because most of it feels like passivity. Not tackling, holding a position while play develops elsewhere, and conceding crosses all look like failures of commitment from the touchline and from the stands. A player who does not understand why he is doing them will revert to instinct at the first moment the plan is tested.
What the opponent does when this works
A working counter-plan becomes a problem for the other coach, and elite sides respond within a half rather than across a season. Three responses are predictable and each has an answer.
Response one: relocate the attacker
If your near midfielder is standing in the inside channel, the simplest counter is to move the attacker out of the channel: into the half-space, deeper, or onto the opposite flank. The isolation is then manufactured somewhere your pre-positioning does not cover.
The answer is a handover rule rather than a chase. Your near midfielder does not follow him. He holds the channel, and whoever owns the area the attacker has moved into takes responsibility. Following is what breaks the shape, and breaking the shape is the purpose of the relocation. If the attacker permanently switches flanks, the pre-positioning instruction moves with him, and the player who inherits it is told during a stoppage rather than mid-possession.
Response two: the overlapping full-back
If the plan pushes the attacker toward the outside, a good side sends the full-back beyond him into the space the retreat concedes. Now the delivery comes from a player arriving at speed rather than from an attacker who has been ushered into a corner.
