Retreating later means something more specific and more counterintuitive. Once the duel is running, the defender’s instinct is to keep retreating for as long as he feels pressure, backing off toward his own goal, waiting for a moment that the reduced touch count will not deliver often. Retreating past the point where cover has arrived surrenders ground for nothing, and ground surrendered in the wide areas becomes ground gained in the acceleration lane.
The instruction is therefore to hold the retreat and change to a lateral shuffle at the moment the covering defender is set. Manufacturing extra touches
If the touch count is the window count, and the profile produces fewer touches, then the plan’s central job is to raise the touch count. This is the active half of the plan and it is where most defensive coaching against ball carriers is silent.
There are four mechanisms and all four are available at any level.
The first is the angle of the retreat. A defender retreating on a straight line lets the carrier run a straight line, and straight lines take the fewest touches. A defender retreating on a diagonal that pushes the carrier toward a curve forces a curved run, and a curved run takes more touches per metre of ground covered, because each contact has to redirect the ball as well as advance it. That is a free extra window, purchased with a body angle, and it is the single cheapest thing in this article.

The near-side central midfielder shades the entry lane rather than pressing the passer, for the same reason it appears in every wide-defending plan in this series: the point is not to intercept but to force the pass to arrive slightly under-hit or slightly behind, which produces a controlling touch instead of a running one. The near-side central midfielder is recovering into the space the curve is bending toward, which means he is running to a place rather than at a player.
Phase four is the engagement, and its trigger is precise: the touch taken while changing direction. The plan wants a curved run in either direction, because a curve costs touches, and it wants the curve to end in a populated area. Where that populated area is depends on your shape and on the phase of the match, not on a universal preference.
The practical rule that follows is a positional one. When the duel starts high, near the halfway line, show him outside, because the ground ahead of him on the outside eventually runs out and your covering players have time to arrive. When the duel starts in your defensive third, show him inside, because outside now means the byline and the cutback, and inside means a congested penalty area with your bodies in it.

This is where the safety boundary matters most, and it should be stated to the players directly: a recovering defender arriving from behind a sprinting carrier does not go through the back of him. He runs alongside, applies shoulder contact if the angles permit, and forces the carrier wider or toward the lane defender. A carrier who has been shown down the line and strikes from a narrow angle is producing the plan’s intended outcome, and the goalkeeper’s job is to hold the near post and force the far-post finish. The failure mode is the goalkeeper drifting toward the middle in anticipation of a cross, which is the same failure that appears against every wide attacker and which is more costly here because the strike arrives earlier than expected.

What to concede deliberately
The concession list is short and two items on it will feel wrong to players who have not been told in advance.

Concede the cross from wide. If the plan forces a curve toward the touchline and ends with a delivery from a position you chose into a box you organized, that is the intended outcome.
Concede possession in the middle third generally, since a medium block with a compact vertical distance is not a pressing arrangement and territory is not the objective.
Refuse three things. Refuse the straight-line carry into the acceleration lane. Refuse the reception facing forward with no covering defender set. And refuse the back-to-goal turn, which is the one genuinely free window the profile offers and which no plan should give away.
The fallbacks
Three fallbacks in order of cost, and one that should not be used.
The first is a covering-depth adjustment. If the carrier is consistently cutting inside and finding the covering defender too easily, the covering player is too tight; push him deeper by three or four metres and accept more beaten first duels. If the carrier is consistently getting past both and reaching the box, the covering player is too deep; bring him in. This is a single-variable adjustment that can be made from the touchline and it fixes most problems the plan encounters.
The second is a zone reassignment. Move the covering job from the near-side centre-back to the near-side central midfielder, who is quicker in a straight line and who does not have to abandon the defensive line to do it. This costs central compactness and preserves the back four’s integrity, and it is the right adjustment when the covering centre-back is being run past rather than being positioned wrongly.
The third is the shape change to a back five with a wide centre-back covering behind the wing-back. This resolves the geometry cleanly and costs the middle third, and it should be made as a planned substitution rather than a reshuffle for the reason that applies throughout this cluster: an improvised back five has no rehearsed handovers.
The fallback that should not be used is doubling in the wide area with two defenders arriving simultaneously. Against a long-striding carrier, two defenders converging is two defenders in the same space and one straight line past both of them. The plan’s whole logic is sequential rather than simultaneous: one defender delays, a second defends the lane behind, a third recovers. Sides that convert that into a double are removing the second layer to reinforce the first, which is the opposite of what the arithmetic requires.
Measuring a carrier’s touch count and stride profile without any equipment
The whole plan depends on classifying the carrier correctly, and the classification is available to anyone with a recording and a piece of paper. This is the most transferable exercise in the article, because it applies to every ball carrier your side will ever face.
The touch-count measurement is the primary one. Pick ten carries in which the player travels roughly ten metres or more with the ball at speed. For each, count the touches from the first contact to the moment he releases or is stopped. Write the ten numbers down. The average is the classification: five or more per ten metres is a short-stride, high-control carrier; three to four is average; two or fewer is the long-stride profile this plan is built for.
Two refinements make the count more reliable. Count only carries at genuine speed, because a player walking the ball forward takes many touches regardless of stride length. And count carries in open ground rather than in congestion, because congestion forces short touches on everybody and will disguise the profile you are trying to identify.
The stride measurement is secondary and useful as a cross-check. Watch the carrier’s feet during a straight-line run and count the strides taken between two fixed reference points on the pitch, most easily the edge of the penalty area and the halfway line, or the two lines of a marked pitch if the camera angle allows. Compare that number against a defender running alongside him. A carrier taking noticeably fewer strides than the defenders around him over the same ground is a long-strider, and the plan applies.
The third observation is not a measurement and it is the most useful of the three: watch what happens to his touch count when a defender makes contact. Some carriers shorten their touches under contact and become harder to dispossess. Others maintain their touch length and become easier, because the contact disrupts the timing of a push that was calibrated for clean running. Which of the two he does determines how aggressively your full-back should engage, and it is visible in three or four sequences.
The fourth is the change-of-direction touch, which is the engagement window the plan is built around. Watch specifically for the moment he redirects, and note how close the ball stays to his feet during it. A carrier whose redirection touch is tight has a narrow window and your defender needs to be patient. A carrier whose redirection touch drifts has a wide one and your defender should be ready to take it every time.
Those four observations take one viewing and they produce a defensive plan that is specific to the opponent rather than generic. The amateur and youth version
This is the article in the batch with the most direct transfer to ordinary football, because tall, fast, long-striding wide players exist at every level and the standard coaching instruction fails against all of them.
The single most valuable thing an amateur coach can take from this article is the corrected distance, delivered as a comparison rather than as a number. Telling a defender to stand three metres off is meaningless, because nobody measures metres during a match. Telling him to stand one full step further back than he normally would, against this specific opponent, is an instruction he can execute.
The second is the setting-earlier instruction, and at amateur level it should be given in the simplest possible form: start going backward before the ball gets to him. That sentence contains the whole idea and it is the correction that produces the biggest immediate improvement, because the most common amateur defensive failure against a fast wide player is a full-back standing still as the ball arrives and then being beaten from a standing start.
The third is the covering depth, which requires the amateur adaptation of being explained rather than assumed. Amateur centre-backs cover tight because covering tight looks like helping. Explain the arithmetic once: if you stand close and he goes past both of us, there is nobody left, and if you stand deep and he goes past me, you are a second problem for him. Players understand it immediately when it is put as a sequence rather than as a position.
The fourth is the contact instruction, with its safety boundary stated clearly. Shoulder-to-shoulder engagement is fair, it shortens the carrier’s touches, and it is a legitimate part of defending. A challenge from behind into the legs of a sprinting player is not, it injures people, and it should not be part of any amateur plan regardless of what the match situation is.
The fifth applies specifically to youth football and it is a development point rather than a defending one. A coach teaching jockeying to young players should teach the distance as a variable rather than a fixed rule from the start, because the fixed rule creates a habit that becomes very hard to break later and because young players are facing an enormous range of stride lengths within a single age group. The instruction that works is to teach the principle behind the distance, which is that you stand far enough back to reach the ball if it is pushed past you, and then let the player calibrate it against each opponent. That takes longer to install and produces defenders who adjust rather than defenders who apply a number.
There is a sixth point specific to youth and it deserves care. Tall, long-striding young players are often the most physically developed in an age group and their advantage will change as their peers grow, so a young defender who cannot cope with one today may cope comfortably in two years without anything having changed in his technique. Coaches should be careful about drawing conclusions about a young defender’s ability from duels against a physically advanced opponent, and should coach the adjustment rather than treating the outcome as a verdict on the player.
What is the one adjustment an amateur side should make first?
Start the retreat before the ball arrives. Against a fast wide carrier, most amateur goals begin with a full-back standing still at the moment of the reception and being beaten from a standing start. Moving backward before the pass lands fixes more of these sequences than any other single instruction.
What each player hears in the meeting
Distilled instructions by position, because a meeting that gives everyone everything gives nobody anything.
The near-side full-back hears four sentences, and they are the most important four in the meeting. Start deeper than you want to, level with your centre-back. Start going backward before the ball reaches him. Stand one full step further off than you normally would. Engage only when he changes direction, and never otherwise.
The near-side centre-back hears three. Cover deeper than you want to, eight to twelve metres behind the duel rather than five. Defend the lane, not the ball. When the full-back is beaten, you are the second duel, not the rescue.
The far-side centre-back hears one. Hold the central lane and do not slide toward the ball, because the runner arriving from the opposite side is unmarked in every one of these sequences.
The near-side central midfielder hears two. Shade the entry lane rather than pressing the passer. When the carry starts, run to the place the curve is bending toward, not at the carrier.
The far-side full-back hears one. Tuck to the far post immediately, because the far-post arrival is the least-tracked runner in this pattern.
The nearest forward at the moment of a turnover hears one, and it prevents more of these sequences than anything a defender does. Stand in the diagonal passing lane rather than approaching the passer head on.
The goalkeeper hears three. Set earlier and further from your line than your default, because the strike arrives sooner than you expect. In a one-on-one, do not commit to a ball that is more than one stride ahead of him, since a long touch for him is a normal touch. Hold the near post when he has been forced outside.
The whole side hears one sentence about the duel itself, which replaces the instruction they are expecting. We are not winning the ball off him in the wide areas, and nobody should try. We are making him take more touches and we are defending the second duel.
Six ways this plan fails
A review checklist, which is more useful after a conceded goal than a narrative.
The first is the standard distance. The full-back applies the two-metre rule he has used his whole career, the first touch travels four metres, and he is beaten without having done anything wrong by the standards he was taught. Cause: the correction was given as a principle rather than as a physical instruction. Fix: give it as one full step further back, and rehearse it against a specific opponent rather than in the abstract.
The second is the late set. The full-back is still arriving at his position when the first touch lands, spends the duel moving backward off balance, and never recovers his feet. Cause: the instinct to hold a higher starting position and close the reception. Fix: the deeper starting position and the instruction to move before the pass.
The third is the tight cover. The covering centre-back sits at five metres, is inside the acceleration lane, and is run past along with the full-back, converting one beaten defender into two. Cause: covering tight feels like helping and covering deep feels like abandoning. Fix: explain the sequence rather than the position, and score it in training on whether a second duel occurred.
The fourth is the lunge. The full-back engages on a straight-line touch because the ball looks reachable, misses, and is out of the sequence. Cause: a long touch looks like a heavy touch to a defender calibrated for average stride lengths. Fix: the engagement trigger stated as a specific event, the change of direction, rather than as a judgment about whether the ball is reachable.
The fifth is the simultaneous double. Two defenders arrive at the carrier together, occupy the same space, and are beaten by one touch through the gap between them. Cause: the instinct that two defenders are better than one, which is true when they are layered and false when they are level. Fix: the explicit instruction that the second defender never arrives level with the first.
The sixth is the abandoned back-to-goal window. The full-back stands off a reception with the carrier facing his own goal, out of respect for the carrier’s speed, and allows a free turn into open ground. Cause: a general instruction to stay off a fast player, applied in the one situation where it is exactly wrong. Fix: the zone rule, tight on a back-to-goal reception and deep on a facing-forward one.
The pattern is the one this series keeps finding. Five of the six are decision failures rather than ability failures, and every one of the five is fixed by a prior decision rather than by a better defender.
Reading whether the plan is working
Four indicators are visible from the technical area inside twenty minutes.
The first is the number of times he takes a settling touch on reception. A settling touch means the entry pass arrived awkwardly, which means the shading is working, and it also means one of his very few touches has been spent on control rather than progress. Count them; three or four in a half is a plan functioning well.
The second is the shape of his runs. Straight runs mean the full-back’s body angle is wrong and the touch count is staying low. Curved runs mean the angle is right and the windows are being manufactured. This is visible from fifty metres away and it is the most diagnostic single thing on the pitch.
The third is where the second duel happens. If it is happening at all, the covering depth is correct. If the carrier is either being stopped by the full-back or arriving in the penalty area with nobody in between, the covering player is in the wrong place in one direction or the other, and the adjustment is a single variable.
The fourth is your full-back’s tackle count, which should be close to zero in the wide areas and which most coaches read as a problem. Tell the bench in advance that a low tackle count in that zone is the plan working, or somebody will suggest the full-back needs to be more aggressive at exactly the wrong moment.
The failure markers are equally short. Any straight-line carry of fifteen metres or more. Any sequence where the covering defender and the full-back are beaten by the same touch. Any reception with his back to goal where he turned unopposed. One of any of those in a half is normal; two is an adjustment.
Reading the debate
Five positions recur about this profile and each contains an observation worth separating from the inference attached to it.
The position that he can be waited out gets the observation right and the instruction dangerously wrong. It is true that periods pass without high-value involvement, for the structural reasons already given: service pattern, opponent shape, and role. The inference that a defending side can therefore be passive is the most expensive mistake available, because the quiet periods are produced by the conditions rather than by the passage of time, and a side that relaxes its covering depth is removing the condition. Waiting works only while you are doing the work that makes waiting look like it is working.
The position that he is only effective in transition is half right and the half that is wrong matters for planning. Transition is where the carry is longest and the acceleration lane is most available, so the highest-value actions cluster there. Against a set defence with a high line, the same actions are available in settled play, because a high line supplies the same open ground that a transition does. The accurate statement is that he is effective wherever there is ground in front of him, and transition is simply the most reliable supplier of it. A side that prepares only for transitions and then holds a high line has prepared for the symptom.
The position that a physical defender unsettles him is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing, and the mechanism is more specific than the position states. Physicality in the sense of size and strength is not the operative quality. Contact is, and specifically contact that arrives during the carry rather than at the reception, because contact during the carry is what shortens the touch length and raises the window count. A large, strong defender who defends at arm’s length produces none of that; a smaller defender willing to run alongside and apply fair shoulder contact produces all of it. The position is right about the effect and wrong about which quality causes it.
The position that he drifts out of matches is the one that most often shades into a claim about a person, and it should be returned to the football. What is observable is that involvement varies, and involvement in a wide carrier is almost entirely a function of whether his side is producing the receptions his role depends on. A wide player holding width in a side that is building slowly against a compact block will have long periods with no meaningful action, and that is a description of the team’s structure and the opponent’s shape rather than of the player. The defensive plan that produces those periods is the one in this article, and when it succeeds it should be credited to the plan.
The position that his numbers understate his impact is the most interesting of the five and it is largely correct, for a reason that is specific to this profile. A carrier who advances the ball thirty metres and then releases it has done the most valuable thing in the sequence and appears in no attacking statistic, because the goal and the assist attach to the two actions after his. Progressive carrying is chronically undervalued in the way most people read a player, and a profile built on it will always look less productive than it is. For a defending coach this is a warning rather than a debate: judge the threat by ground gained rather than by end product, because the ground gained is what your defensive shape has to survive.
The wider correction: how jockeying should be taught
The specific number in this article matters less than the general point underneath it, and the general point is a correction to something that is taught as universal.
Jockeying distance is presented on coaching courses, in defending sessions, and in youth curricula as a fixed rule, usually with a number attached. The rule is derived from an average, the average is real, and the presentation of it as fixed produces defenders who apply it against opponents it does not fit and who are then criticized for a failure that belongs to the instruction.
The correct teaching is the principle rather than the number. Stand far enough back that a ball pushed past you is a ball you can still reach in one recovery stride. That formulation contains the number for an average opponent and it automatically produces the corrected distance for a long-strider, because a defender who has been taught the principle will observe that this opponent’s pushes travel further and will adjust without being told.
The reason the principle is not taught in that form is that it is harder to coach, harder to assess, and harder to correct in a large group, whereas a number is easy on all three. That is a real practical constraint and it produces a real cost, and coaches who work with small groups or with individual defenders should teach the principle.
There is a second and broader version of the same point, which is worth stating because it applies to a great deal of defensive coaching. Almost every defensive rule of thumb, the jockeying distance, the covering depth, the line height, the pressing trigger distance, is a number derived from a population average, and almost every one of them is taught without the derivation. A defender who knows the derivation adjusts; a defender who knows only the number applies it uniformly. The single highest-return change available to most coaching environments is to teach the reason alongside the rule, and the wide duel is where the cost of not doing it is most visible, because the opponents vary most.

The set-piece and second-phase dimension
Two dead-ball considerations attach to this plan.
The first is your own attacking corners. A side with a long-striding carrier waiting on the halfway line is a side whose counter-attack begins with thirty metres of ground gained before anyone touches the ball a second time. The standard two-back arrangement is inadequate, and the reason is specific to this profile rather than general: two defenders retreating against a carrier who covers ground in few touches will not be able to delay long enough for the rest of the side to recover, because delay against this profile requires a defender to be set and a retreating defender is not.
The correct arrangement is three back with one of them starting deep rather than on the halfway line, so that a covering position already exists rather than having to be constructed while retreating. It costs an attacking body in the box, which is a genuine cost, and it is smaller than the alternative.
The second is the free kick conceded in a wide area of your own half, which is the outcome the plan’s non-tackling instruction is designed to avoid. A full-back who is not lunging is a full-back who is not fouling, and that is a secondary benefit of the plan worth naming to the players, because the delivery into your box from a set position is a higher-value situation for the attacking side than the carry you would have prevented.
There is a third point about defending your own corners. A long-striding carrier left up the pitch during a defensive set piece is the outlet, and the marking scheme should account for him with a defender who does not enter the box rather than with the assumption that the clearance will find him under pressure. A player left free at the halfway line during a corner is a player with the entire pitch available.
The centre-back’s version of the same duel
The article has treated the full-back as the primary defender, which is correct for the majority of sequences and leaves out the situation that produces the most alarming ones: the long-striding carrier attacking a centre-back directly, either after cutting inside or on a central transition.
The duel changes in three ways and each requires an adjustment.
The first change is that there is no touchline. Every reason for showing a carrier outside disappears when the duel happens in a central lane, because both directions lead to goal and neither has a boundary that helps. The centre-back’s forcing decision is therefore purely about population: he shows toward whichever side has more of his teammates, exactly as the no-weak-side principle described elsewhere in this cluster requires, and he does it with his body angle rather than by moving across.
The second change is that the space behind him is the goal rather than the byline. That raises the cost of being beaten enormously and it changes the correct distance in the opposite direction from the full-back’s correction. A centre-back facing a long-striding carrier in a central lane should stand closer rather than further off, because the ground behind him is too valuable to trade and because a push past him at three metres is a shooting position. The correct behaviour is a tight, patient, retreating stance with no engagement at all until support arrives, accepting that the carrier will get a shot from distance and refusing to let him get closer.
That reversal is worth stating carefully because it looks like a contradiction and is not. The corrected distance for the full-back exists to preserve the possibility of contesting the ball. The tighter distance for the centre-back exists to preserve the distance to goal, which is worth more than the ball in that zone. Different objectives, different distances, same underlying reasoning.
The third change is that the covering player is now a midfielder recovering from in front rather than a defender waiting behind. That is a materially worse arrangement, because a recovering midfielder arrives late and from the wrong side, and it is the reason central carries are more dangerous than wide ones despite being defended by better duel defenders.
The instruction that follows is preventive rather than reactive: the near-side central midfielder’s screening position exists specifically to prevent the carrier reaching the central lane in the first place, and his job when the carry starts wide is to make the inside route unattractive rather than to chase the ball. Sides that let a wide carrier reach the central lane have already lost the phase where the sequence was defensible.
Installing the correction in a session
The full session design belongs elsewhere in this series and the minimum needed to make the correction real is short.
The core practice is a wide one-versus-one into a target zone, with a covering defender starting at a fixed deep position, and with one rule change that does the teaching: the defender is scored on whether a second duel occurred, not on whether the ball was won. That scoring rule produces the covering depth, the patience, and the retreat angle without any of the three having to be explained repeatedly, because a defender who lunges will lose the point even when he wins the ball.
The distance correction is installed with a physical constraint rather than an instruction. Mark a line on the ground at the corrected distance from the reception point and require the defender to be behind it when the ball arrives. Players calibrate against a visible reference in a way they never calibrate against a number, and after two sessions the reference can be removed and the distance persists.
The setting-earlier instruction is installed by delaying the pass. Have the server hold the ball an extra beat while the defender is already retreating, so that the retreat-before-the-pass habit forms as a rhythm rather than as a decision. A defender who has spent a session retreating before every pass will do it in a match without thinking about it, which is the only way it survives the seventieth minute.
The touch-count work is installed by making it explicit. Run the same practice with the carrier told to reach the target zone in as few touches as possible, and have somebody count. The defenders will immediately start doing the things that raise the count, because they can see the score, and they will discover the retreat angle and the covering body themselves, which is a far stronger installation than being told.
Run it under fatigue at least once, because every failure mode in this plan appears when the legs are tired and none of them appear in a fresh eight-minute block.
What the plan costs you going forward
Every defensive plan is an attacking decision and this one is moderately expensive on one flank.
The near-side full-back is starting deeper, is not overlapping, and is spending his running budget on eccentric retreats rather than on forward runs. Whatever your attacking plan is, it does not include him, and a side that expects width on that flank while running this plan will get neither the width nor the containment.
The near-side centre-back is covering deeper and more laterally than usual, which reduces his ability to step out with the ball into midfield and therefore removes one of the more common modern build-up routes.
The near-side central midfielder is shading rather than pressing and recovering into wide areas, which means he is rarely the player receiving in a productive position when you win the ball.
That is three players on one side of the pitch substantially withdrawn from your attack, which is a real cost and one that has a specific and attractive compensation available.
The compensation is the same one that appears against every side built around an advanced wide attacker. A carrier who holds a high, wide starting position and does not track back is a permanent absence in his own side’s defensive shape, and the space behind him is available at every turnover. Your opposite full-back is the player to exploit it, and the instruction is that he stays high while you defend rather than tucking in, accepting that your defensive numbers on that side are one short.
That is a genuine risk and it is the trade most sides should take, because the plan’s numbers on the containment side are adequate by design and the extra defender would be the least useful body in the box. A clearance played long into the channel behind an advanced wide attacker, with your full-back already running, converts a defensive sequence into an attacking one in a single action and does it at the moment the opposition is least organized.
Prepare that route explicitly, tell the goalkeeper and the centre-backs where the clearance goes, and the plan stops being damage limitation and starts being a match plan.
What the plan does not solve
An honest counter-plan states its limits, because a coach who believes a plan is complete will not prepare for the situations it leaves open.
The first thing this plan does not solve is the two-route problem. A carrier who is genuinely dangerous going outside and cutting inside cannot be forced onto a low-value option, because both options are live. Everything in this article is an attempt to make the route curved and populated rather than to make it harmless, and the honest description of a good outcome is that the carry ends in a contested delivery or a distant strike rather than that it ends in nothing. Sides expecting to remove the threat will be disappointed and will then abandon a plan that was working.
The second thing it does not solve is the early release. A carrier who advances twenty metres and then plays a simple pass into a teammate has done the damage before any duel occurs, and no jockeying distance affects that. This is the reason the article keeps returning to the pass that starts the sequence: the only complete answer to a progressive carrier is to prevent him receiving with ground in front of him, and everything after that is management. A coach whose preparation time is limited should spend it on the entry pass rather than on the duel.
The third is the second-phase arrival. The plan is built around the carry and it deliberately sends the full-back into a deep, wide defensive position, which means the space he vacated at the near post is available to a runner. That runner is assigned to the near-side central midfielder in this plan, and a midfielder recovering forty metres is a weaker answer than a defender holding a position. It is a genuine seam and sides that have watched this plan closely will attack it.
The fourth is the aerial dimension. Nothing in this article addresses what happens when a tall attacker attacks a delivery, because the plan is a duel plan, and a side that contains the carry excellently and defends crosses poorly has contained nothing. The box organization is a separate problem with a separate scheme and it has to be prepared separately.
The fifth is fatigue, which the plan is unusually sensitive to because its central mechanism is a physically expensive retreat pattern. A plan that requires a defender to perform maximal eccentric work for ninety minutes is a plan that degrades, and the degradation is not gradual: it arrives as a step change when the defender loses the ability to brake cleanly. Substitution planning is therefore part of this plan rather than an adjunct to it, and a side without a second full-back capable of executing the correction should think carefully before committing to it at all.
The sixth is the thing no plan solves, which is that the carrier gets to choose the moment. A defensive plan is a set of prepared responses and the attacker holds the initiative in every sequence. Preparation shifts the odds; it does not remove the possibility that a carrier of this quality produces something the plan had no answer to. Coaches who present a counter-plan to their players as a guarantee will lose the players’ trust the first time it is beaten, and the honest framing is that the plan turns a high-probability chance into a low-probability one, repeatedly, across ninety minutes, which is what defending actually is.
There is a seventh limit that belongs in a different category, because it is about the plan’s dependence on information rather than about football. Everything in this article assumes the carrier has been classified correctly, and the classification comes from a touch count taken off a recording. If the recording shows carries in congestion rather than open ground, or carries at walking pace rather than at speed, the count will be too high and the plan will be built for the wrong profile. A side that applies the corrected distance to a carrier who is not a long-strider will stand a metre too far off, concede the pass and the shot for nothing, and conclude that the correction does not work. The measurement is cheap and it is not optional, and the failure it prevents is the quiet kind that gets attributed to execution rather than to preparation. Ten carries and a piece of paper is the entire cost, and the ten minutes it takes are the highest-value ten minutes in the preparation week, because every other decision in the plan is downstream of getting the classification right.
Stating those six limits in the meeting is not a hedge. It is what stops a side abandoning a functioning plan after the first sequence that beats it, and abandoning a functioning plan after one sequence is the most common way that good preparation produces a bad result.
Prioritising the preparation week
Most sides have three sessions and a meeting, and a plan with this many components will not install completely in that time. Ranking the components by return per minute is therefore part of the plan rather than an afterthought.
The highest return is the entry pass, and it is worth roughly half the total preparation value on its own.
