Very few teams specify who the second defender is, where he comes from, and when he commits, and without those three specifications the second defender arrives late, from behind, and to no effect.
The second defender is the nearest central midfielder. Not the covering centre-back, and not the winger recovering from in front. The reason is angle. The ladder is read downward when you are losing control of the match and upward when you are regaining it, and the states are not moral. State five is not a failure and state one is not a success. This sounds obvious and is routinely broken in the final ten minutes of a drawn match, which is precisely when the runway is longest and the consequences are largest.
The second is the no-simultaneous-full-backs rule. Both full-backs do not advance past the halfway line at the same time, ever, and the one who stays is the one on the side he occupies. This costs you a body in attack and it removes the single most common origin of a long-runway transition, which is a switch of play into the channel a full-back has just vacated with nobody covering it.
The third is the counter-press window. When the ball is lost in the opposition half, the two or three nearest players press the ball immediately for a strictly limited window of about two seconds, and if the ball is not recovered or the pass is not forced backwards within that window, they stop pressing and run back. The rule exists because a counter-press that continues past its useful life is worse than no counter-press at all: it commits bodies to a lost cause and leaves the runway open behind them. Give it two seconds and a hard stop.
Within that window, the target of the press is the passer, not the runner. This is the single most useful transition instruction in the plan and it is counterintuitive enough that it needs to be drilled rather than explained. When possession changes, the natural instinct of every player is to look at the dangerous forward and start running toward him. That instinct produces a converging group of defenders arriving at a player who has not received the ball yet, and it leaves the man about to play the pass entirely free to choose the moment and the weight of it. Pressing the passer removes the pass, which removes the run. Chasing the runner concedes the pass and then loses the race.
The complementary instruction is for the deepest defenders, whose job in the first two seconds is not to sprint toward the ball but to hold the offside line and to stay level with one another. A transition that begins with a defensive line breaking apart at different speeds creates the seam that a well-timed run attacks. Holding the line for two seconds, then dropping together, is slower in appearance and faster in effect.
The six seconds after you lose it
Because state four is where the biggest chances originate, it is worth breaking down as a sequence rather than as a principle.
In the first second, the nearest player to the ball closes the passer’s face and takes away the forward pass with his body rather than lunging for the ball. The second nearest player takes the nearest supporting option. Nobody else moves toward the ball. Simultaneously, the two centre-backs check their relationship to each other and to the halfway line, and the ball-side full-back begins recovering on a diagonal toward his own penalty spot rather than toward the touchline. Recovering toward the penalty spot is a rule worth stating explicitly, because full-backs instinctively recover along the touchline, which keeps them in their zone and out of the play.
In seconds two and three, the outcome of the press determines the branch. If the pass forward has been prevented, the block resets and the team climbs back up the ladder to state two. If the pass has been made, the entire team stops pressing and runs, and the deepest defenders now have one job, which is to delay the carrier and steer him away from the middle rather than to win the ball. The delay is worth more than the tackle, because delay allows the eight players who are behind the ball to get in front of it.
In seconds four to six, the recovering players arrive, and the priority order for who fills which space matters. The first recovering midfielder takes the central lane in front of the box, not the ball. The second takes the far-side runner. Only the third goes to help the ball. Filling the central lane first is what turns a three on two into a three on three, and a three on three against a set defensive shape is a manageable situation rather than an emergency.
Two further points about this phase deserve honesty rather than tidiness. The first is that the tactical foul is a real tool in this state, it is used by every serious team in the world, and it carries a cost in cards and in free-kick positions that has to be weighed rather than pretended away. If it is going to be used, it should be assigned in advance to a specific player in a specific zone, so that it happens early, high, and cleanly rather than late, deep, and dangerously. Assigning it to the wrong player in the wrong zone converts a yellow card into a red one and a free kick into a penalty. The second point is that the plan must include the possibility that the transition simply beats you. It will happen once or twice per match against a good attacking side. The measure of the plan is not whether it produces zero transitions, which is unattainable, but whether the transitions that do occur begin in front of your rest-defense shape rather than behind it.
The goalkeeper’s contribution to the blueprint
A goalkeeper who defends space is worth several metres of line height, which makes him a direct contributor to the fifteen-metre rule rather than a last resort behind it. Three specific behaviours matter.
The first is starting position. In states one and two, the goalkeeper’s default position is on the edge of his penalty area or a couple of metres outside it, angled so that the first step toward any ball played over the top is a forward step rather than a turn. That position is what allows the back line to hold five metres higher than it otherwise could, and five metres of line height is exactly the difference between a runway that can be defended and one that cannot.
The second is the decision rule for balls played into the space behind. The rule is simple and should be absolute: the goalkeeper takes everything he can reach with a straight-line run and nothing he cannot. Hesitation is the failure mode, not aggression, because a goalkeeper who starts and stops has removed himself from the situation while also removing the defender’s certainty. The call has to be loud and early, and the defenders have to be trained to peel away rather than to compete for the ball once the call comes.
The third is the one on one itself, which is the situation the whole plan is designed to prevent and which will nonetheless occur. Against a forward who accelerates onto the ball, the goalkeeper’s best approach is to close ground quickly while the carrier’s head is down on his touch, then set his feet and stay tall as the carrier lifts his head. Staying tall matters because a forward at speed with a defender recovering behind him is under time pressure and will often take the first available option; a tall, set goalkeeper makes the near-post and the lifted finish both harder, and the shot that remains is across the body into the far corner, which is the lowest-percentage finish of the three. Going to ground early converts a difficult finish into an easy one by removing the goalkeeper’s ability to react.
Angle work matters more against a right-footed forward cutting in from the left, because the geometry is asymmetric. Coming in from that side onto his right foot, the shooting angle opens toward the far post as he travels, which means the goalkeeper’s near post has to be covered early and then his weight has to stay balanced for the far-side shot. Over-committing to the near post at the moment the carrier enters the box is the most common goalkeeping error against this pattern, because it turns a covered near post into a wide-open far one at the exact moment the shot is taken.
Set pieces and the two dead-ball dimensions
Set pieces enter this blueprint from two directions, and the second one is more important than the first.
Defending the opponent’s attacking set pieces is the smaller issue, because aerial work in the box is not the primary weapon of the forward this plan is built around. The relevant point is not how to mark him at a corner but where he goes when the corner is cleared. Against a side with a fast forward, the defensive corner is a transition risk dressed as a set piece, and the answer is to keep a genuine outlet high and to instruct the deepest defender not to push out into a line until the ball has cleared the penalty area. Teams that push out reflexively at a corner concede the exact geometry the whole plan exists to prevent, with the additional handicap that half the team is running the wrong way.
Your own attacking set pieces are the larger issue. This is the phase in which teams with the ball voluntarily create their own longest runways, by sending six players into the opposition box and leaving two defenders against one forward with sixty metres of open pitch. The rule this plan uses is that at any attacking corner or wide free kick, you keep three players behind the ball when they leave one forward high: two defenders occupying the central lane and a third player, usually the holding midfielder, positioned wide of the box on the side the clearance is most likely to travel toward. The third player is not there to defend; he is there to make the first clearance a contest rather than a free launch into space.
The trade is a real one. Three players held back is one fewer attacking body in the box and it costs you goals over a season. It is still the correct trade against this specific opponent, because the alternative is not a lost duel in your own box but a clean run at your goal from your own attacking third, which converts at a far higher rate. Say the trade out loud to the players so that the attacking group understands why they are one short.
The same accounting applies to your own throw-ins and goal kicks in the opposition half, both of which are commonly treated as safe moments and are not. A short goal kick played under pressure is the highest-runway turnover available in football, and against a side built to counter it should be attempted only when the receiving player has a genuine escape option facing forward.
Fallbacks: what to do when the first plan fails
Every counter-plan needs an explicit failure ladder, because the version that fails is not the version that was drilled but the version that survived contact with an opponent who is also good at this. There are four fallbacks, in the order they should be reached for.
The first fallback, when he is receiving too often with an open body, is to change the midfield reference rather than the defensive one. Move the ball-side central midfielder five metres wider and instruct him to sit on the inside lane permanently, accepting that the opponent’s deep midfielder is now free. You have traded a free player in a harmless zone for a closed lane in a dangerous one, and that is a good trade in almost every match state. If the free deep midfielder starts hurting you, the trade needs revisiting, but that is a different problem with a longer fuse.
The second fallback, when the wide duel is being lost repeatedly with the runway short, is to double the flank structurally rather than by instruction. This usually means moving to a back five with the near-side wing-back engaging and the wide centre-back covering, which guarantees the second defender without relying on a midfielder arriving in time. The cost is central compactness and it should be paid only when the wide duel is genuinely the source of the danger, which is a question the touchline should be able to answer by half time.
The third fallback, when the problem is the supply rather than the duel, is to stop defending the receiver and start defending the passer. Assign a man-oriented job to whichever player is repeatedly finding him: usually a deep-lying playmaker or a full-back with time to lift his head. The player doing the marking does not follow him everywhere; he simply denies the forward pass in the specific zone from which the ball is being launched. Cutting the supply is often easier than cutting the run, and it is the adjustment that most reliably changes a match at half time.
The fourth fallback is the state-five retreat, and it should be treated as a last resort rather than a plan. Dropping the whole block to the edge of the penalty area does shorten the runway to almost nothing, and it does convert the contest into a crossing and cutback contest that a well-drilled defensive side can survive for a period. It is a legitimate way to hold a lead for fifteen minutes. It is not a way to play a match, because it hands over the entire pitch and because the resulting sustained pressure produces set pieces, second balls, and eventually a chance. Use it as an ending, not as an approach.
The defender profiles that fit this plan
The blueprint is deliberately built so that it does not require a specific athlete, but selection still matters, and the profile that fits is not always the one a coach reaches for. Four distinct full-back types can execute this job, and each has a different failure mode.
The recovery type is the fast full-back with average positional judgment. He is the popular choice and he is a reasonable one, provided the plan around him is intact. His value is that he raises the tolerance for error: when the line is caught fifteen metres too high or the midfielder is late, he can still make the situation survivable. His failure mode is that his own pace tempts him into positions the plan forbids, because a defender who knows he can recover will engage earlier, stand tighter, and gamble on interceptions. Coach him toward patience explicitly, and be aware that the moment his legs go, late in a match or late in a season, the plan around him has to tighten to compensate.
The positional type is the full-back with modest pace and excellent starting positions. He is usually the better fit, and coaches habitually underrate him for this specific assignment because the highlight of a fast defender catching a fast forward is memorable and the highlight of a slow defender never being in a race does not exist. His value is that he consistently produces the closed reception, which removes the race before it starts. His failure mode is the single moment of misjudgment, which for him is unrecoverable, so he needs the covering centre-back and the screening midfielder to be genuinely disciplined rather than nominally present.
The physical type is the strong, aggressive full-back who wins contact duels. He is the least well suited of the four to the wide isolation but he is valuable in the state-five low block, where the contest becomes a series of close-range battles on the edge of the box and where strength in the first contact is worth more than pace. Consider him as a second-half option once the match has settled into a defensive phase rather than as a starter against an opponent who will attack space early.
The converted type is a centre-back playing at full-back, which is a genuine option against a forward who starts wide and cuts inside, and one that serious teams use more often than the general discussion acknowledges. His value is that he defends the inside route naturally and does not panic in a one on one because he has spent his career in them. His failure mode is the width he cannot cover when the ball is switched away from him and the attacking side’s wide player stays high. Use him when the opponent attacks predominantly through one flank and when you are content to defend the far side with a compact block rather than with a full-back covering ground.
The centre-back question is simpler and comes down to a single trait, which is the willingness and ability to defend the space behind rather than the man in front. A centre-back who is comfortable defending a large area behind him, who turns cleanly, and who reads the pass early is worth more in this plan than a dominant aerial defender who prefers to feel a body. If you have one of each, the front-foot reader plays on the side he occupies and the aerial defender plays on the other, where the crosses will be arriving.
The holding midfielder is the least discussed and most important selection in the whole plan. The requirement is not ball-winning and not passing range; it is lateral discipline, which means the willingness to move five metres sideways and stand in an empty lane while nothing appears to be happening. Players who need to be involved to feel useful do this badly. Players who accept a positional job and hold it for ninety minutes do it well, and the difference between the two is worth more to this blueprint than the difference between the best and worst full-back in your squad.
Game state, fatigue, and the substitutions to plan for
A defensive plan that ignores the scoreboard is not a plan, because the pressure that breaks this blueprint is almost never tactical. It is emotional, and it arrives in three predictable forms.
When you are leading, the danger is the drift downward. A team that is a goal ahead retreats gradually, five metres at a time, without any decision being taken. The block ends up in state five with the ball in state two, the runway is short but the entire pitch is conceded, and the sustained pressure that follows produces the equalizer. The counter to it is a named reference and a loud voice: the deepest defender calls the line back up every time the ball goes backwards, and the coaching staff intervene from the touchline the moment the block sags. If you intend to defend deep to protect a lead, decide it and announce it rather than letting it happen by accident, and pair it with a genuine outlet so that clearances have a destination.
When you are level in the closing stages, the danger is the opposite. A team pushing for a winner sends its full-backs forward together, empties the rest-defense shape, and hands over the exact conditions the plan exists to prevent. This is the single most common way that a good defensive performance turns into a defeat against a counter-attacking side. The no-simultaneous-full-backs rule holds until the eightieth minute in every match state; after that, if you break it, break it deliberately, with the holding midfielder dropping into the vacated position rather than joining the attack.
When you are behind, the plan has to be abandoned in a controlled way rather than dissolved. Pushing the line up and pressing higher is the correct response to a deficit, and it lengthens the runway by definition. The controlled version keeps two players in the rest-defense shape and accepts long transitions rather than pretending they will not happen; the uncontrolled version pushes everybody and concedes a second goal within ten minutes, which is how a one-goal defeat becomes a three-goal one.
Fatigue deserves separate attention because it degrades the plan unevenly. The dynamic line degrades first, because stepping up requires a jog forward and tired defenders stop making the effort. The midfielder’s inside-lane discipline degrades second, because holding a position with no ball involvement is mentally expensive. The full-back’s angle degrades last, because it is a habit rather than an effort. That ordering tells you what to substitute and when: the holding midfielder is the most valuable defensive change you can make around the seventieth minute, and replacing him with a fresh player who will hold a lane is usually worth more than replacing a tiring full-back.
Prepare for the opponent’s changes too. Against a side built around a running forward, the two adjustments to expect are an additional wide player introduced to stretch your block laterally, and a change of the forward’s starting position from wide to central to attack a tiring line directly. The first is answered by dropping your wide midfielder alongside your full-back and accepting a five-man defensive line for a period. The second is answered by making the near-side centre-back the primary defender, tightening the pair, and being far more careful about stepping. Both should be rehearsed rather than improvised, and both should be in the pre-match briefing as expected events rather than surprises.
Two attacking structures, two versions of the same problem
The forward is only half of the problem. The other half is the structure around him, and the same individual threat arrives in two quite different packages depending on how his team is built. A plan that does not distinguish them will be correct in general and wrong on the day.
The first package is the possession structure. Here his team holds the ball, circulates it patiently across your block, and looks for the moment your defensive line has shifted far enough across that the far-side channel opens. The dangerous pass is the switch, or the diagonal from the opposite half-space, and the reception happens against a defence that is organized but stretched. The runway in this version is created laterally rather than vertically: the space exists because your block has moved sideways, not because your line is high.
Against the possession package, the priority is the far-side full-back’s discipline. He does not follow the ball across; he holds a position roughly in line with the far post and defends the switch by being there rather than by arriving. That means your block accepts being narrow on the ball side and slightly overloaded there, trading a wide overload in a non-scoring area for the removal of the diagonal that actually hurts. The second priority is the timing of the block’s lateral shifts, which should be one pass behind the ball rather than one pass ahead of it, because a block that anticipates the switch is a block that can be manipulated into shifting early.
The second package is the direct structure, where his team defends deeper, invites pressure, and looks to release him in transition with one or two passes. Here the runway is created vertically, by your own team’s position, and the dangerous pass is the first one after the turnover. The reception happens against a defence that is not stretched but is high and facing the wrong way.
Against the direct package, everything that matters happens while you have the ball. The block’s shape when defending is almost irrelevant, because you will rarely be in a settled defensive shape; what decides the match is your rest defense, your counter-press window, and your discipline about full-backs. Teams that lose to this package almost always lose it during their own best spell of possession, which is why the tape review afterwards is so confusing to the players: they remember dominating and they cannot explain the scoreline.
Identifying which package you face is a pre-match question with a simple test. Watch where the opponent’s defensive line sits when they do not have the ball, and watch how many passes elapse between their recovery and their first forward pass. A high line and patient circulation means the possession package and a lateral problem. A deeper line and a forward pass within two touches means the direct package and a vertical problem. Most sides are a mixture, and the useful output is not a label but a proportion, because it tells you where to spend your preparation time.
There is a third case worth naming, which is the match where the opponent switches packages at half time. This happens most often when a possession side has been frustrated for forty-five minutes and decides to invite pressure instead. The signal is the opponent’s defensive line dropping ten metres and their forward starting deeper and wider. If you see it, the response is not a tactical change but an instruction: your full-backs stop advancing and your rest-defense pair becomes a trio. Teams that miss this transition concede within fifteen minutes of the restart with a numbing regularity, and they concede it in a phase they thought they were controlling.
The dedicated man-marking option, and when it is worth the cost
Somewhere in the preparation of any match like this, someone suggests putting one player on him for ninety minutes and forgetting about everything else. The suggestion deserves a real answer rather than a reflexive dismissal, because it has worked historically and because the reasons it usually fails are specific enough to be instructive.
A dedicated man-marking assignment does one thing extremely well: it removes the free reception. If a defender is responsible for a single opponent everywhere on the pitch, that opponent never receives unattended, and the body-angle variable is solved permanently rather than situationally. That is a genuine gain and it is why the approach persists.
It also does three things badly. It hands the opponent control of your shape, because wherever the marked player walks, your defender follows, and a forward who drifts into midfield or across to the far touchline can drag a defender out of the structure without touching the ball. It creates a permanent one on one, which against this profile of forward is the exact contest the rest of this blueprint is designed to avoid. And it removes the marker from every other defensive job, so a back four with one man-marker is functionally a back three with a passenger.
The version that works is a compromise: zonal responsibility with a man-oriented reference, in which the near-side full-back treats him as his primary concern while the ball is on that side and hands him off the moment he crosses into a teammate’s zone. The handoff is the part that needs rehearsing, because it fails silently. Two defenders each believing the other has him is worse than either arrangement done cleanly, and the fix is a verbal convention rather than a tactical one: the player taking over calls it, the player releasing acknowledges it, and the centre-back arbitrates when nobody speaks.
The full man-marking assignment becomes worth its cost in exactly two situations. The first is when your midfield cannot be trusted to hold the inside lane, in which case you are choosing between two flawed structures and the man-marker at least guarantees pressure at the reception. The second is late in a match you are leading, when a fresh defender introduced specifically to follow him for twenty minutes removes the free reception at a moment when your block is tired and your line is sagging. Outside those two cases, the zonal plan with a man-oriented reference produces better outcomes with fewer players committed, and it does not surrender the shape of your team to the movement of one opponent.
What this plan concedes on purpose
A blueprint that does not name its concessions cannot be evaluated, and a coach who has not named them to his players will find those players improvising at the worst moment. This plan concedes four things, and it concedes them knowingly.
It concedes possession and territory in the middle third. The opponent will have the ball, will pass it sideways in front of your block, and will look comfortable doing so. Players and supporters both find this uncomfortable, and the discomfort is the reason teams abandon the plan around the half-hour mark. Comfort in the middle third is not a threat; it is the sound of the plan working.
It concedes crosses from deep and wide positions. Because the full-back is angled to send the carrier toward the touchline and the second defender is closing the inside lane, the ball will frequently end up being delivered from thirty to thirty-five metres. Those deliveries produce goals occasionally, and against a side with a strong aerial forward the calculation changes. Against a side whose primary threat is a running forward, a cross from that distance is the cheapest chance you will concede all day and you should be pleased every time you see one.
It concedes shots from outside the penalty area. A screened inside lane means the carrier’s remaining option is often to shoot from twenty-two or twenty-five metres. This is a conversion rate you can live with, and the goalkeeper should be set for it rather than surprised by it.
It concedes the high press. You are not winning the ball in their third, which means you are not scoring the easy goals that come from high turnovers, which means your own attacking plan has to be built around longer transitions and set pieces. This is the concession that costs points rather than goals, and it is why this blueprint should be deployed against opponents whose transition threat genuinely warrants it rather than as a default.
What it does not concede, at any point, is a reception with an open body and a long runway. If that is happening more than once or twice per half, the plan is not being executed and the fallbacks above should be reached for immediately rather than at half time.
When he plays through the middle rather than from the left
The blueprint above is written for the wide starting position, because that is the position from which the isolation problem arises. A central starting position produces a genuinely different contest and requires three adjustments, none of which are cosmetic.
The first adjustment is that the first defender changes from the full-back to a centre-back, which changes the nature of the individual duel completely. A centre-back cannot use the touchline as a second defender, because there is no touchline, and the compensating asset is that he has a partner beside him rather than a partner forty metres away. The angle rule survives but inverts: instead of steering the carrier outside, the near centre-back’s job is to steer him toward his partner’s side, and the two of them squeeze the channel between them rather than each defending a separate route.
The second adjustment is that the offside line becomes a live tool rather than a background condition. Against a wide start, offside is difficult to use because the run comes from behind the ball on a diagonal and the timing references are messy. Against a central start, the run behind the last line is the primary threat, the line is facing the passer, and a coordinated step from four defenders can eliminate a run entirely. This is the one context in which the offside trap is a worthwhile part of the plan rather than a gamble, and even here it should be a trigger rather than a habit: step only when the passer is under pressure or has his head down, never when he is free and looking up.
The third adjustment is that the screening job moves from the inside lane to the central lane in front of the back four, and it becomes a two-player job rather than a one-player job. Against a central runner supported by a playmaker in the pocket, one holding midfielder has to defend both the pass into feet and the pass over the top, which is impossible; two players sitting five metres apart can defend both, one high on the receiver and one dropping to shorten the runway.
The verdict on which version is harder is that they are hard in opposite conditions, which is why no single defensive setup handles both. The central version is more defensible with a good defensive line, because a well-drilled line can compress the space behind and can use offside. The wide version is more defensible with a deeper block, because depth removes the isolation and the touchline does the work. A team that tries to defend both with the same shape will find itself either too high against the wide threat or too deep against the central one, and the useful preparation question before a match is not how to stop him in general but which of the two versions the opponent’s structure is likely to produce.
The debates worth answering
Five positions circulate constantly in discussion of this problem. Each of them contains something real, and each of them fails in a specific way. Naming the deciding factor is more useful than dismissing them.
Where does this plan usually break down?
At the second defender. Line height and full-back angles are easy to drill and easy to see. The midfielder’s inside-lane discipline is invisible from the touchline, decays under fatigue, and disappears entirely when the team chases a goal. When the plan fails, the tape almost always shows a wide duel that became a genuine one on one.
The first position is that only an equally fast defender can cope, and everything else is theory. What is real in it is that pace buys forgiveness: a fast defender can be caught in a poor position and still recover, which raises the plan’s tolerance for error. What is wrong with it is that it treats a one on one in open space as the unit of analysis, and a one on one in open space against this forward is a losing proposition even for a fast defender. He does not need to beat you by five metres; he needs to beat you by one, and one metre is available to him against almost anybody. The deciding factor is that pace is a useful margin, not a plan, and a slow full-back with a screened inside lane and a fifteen-metre runway will concede less than a fast full-back left alone with forty metres behind him.
The second position is that he is only dangerous in transition, so simply keeping the ball is enough. What is real in it is that transitions are indeed where the biggest chances originate, and a team that keeps possession well genuinely does reduce his output. What is wrong with it is the word simply. Keeping the ball is not a defensive plan; it is an ambition, and it collapses the moment you fall behind, the moment your best passer is pressed into a mistake, or the moment the opponent decides to defend deep and concede possession on purpose. A possession-based defensive plan is a plan that only works while you are winning, and a plan that only works while you are winning is not a plan. The deciding factor is what your team does in the six seconds after a turnover, which is why rest defense sits at the centre of this blueprint rather than at the edge of it.
The third position is that a deep block neutralizes him. What is real in it is the geometry: depth genuinely does shorten the runway, and a well-organized deep block genuinely does reduce the number of clean running situations. What is wrong with it is that depth does not remove the threat, it exchanges it. A team defending on the edge of its own box against a side with strong wide players and good crossers has swapped a running problem for a crossing and cutback problem, and the cutback from the byline to the top of the six-yard box is one of the highest-value patterns in football. Depth also concedes the second-ball zone and the corner count. The deciding factor is your box defending and your aerial ability: if both are strong, deep is a real option for a period, and if either is weak, deep is a slower way to lose.
The fourth position is that his defensive contribution is limited, so pressing his team is effectively free. This one requires care, because the difference between a tactical observation and a character verdict is the difference between analysis and noise, and only the first has any place in a preparation meeting. Framed properly, the observation is structural: a forward whose principal function is to threaten the space behind will start from a higher and wider position out of possession than a forward whose principal function is to lead a press, and the team behind him is built to absorb that.
