GoodNotes organizes notes into notebooks and folders, but the lack of tagging, metadata, or smart filtering means that finding a specific note from months ago requires remembering which notebook you put it in. The search function helps if you remember specific words you wrote, but the combination of imperfect handwriting recognition and no organizational metadata beyond folder hierarchy means that your retrieval options are limited as your collection grows.
There is also an export limitation that becomes apparent over time. GoodNotes exports notes as PDFs or images, not as editable text or Markdown. If you want to transform your handwritten notes into typed, searchable, editable documents, you need additional OCR software to process the exports. 8. Notability
Notability shares many of GoodNotes’ limitations, Apple-only, handwriting-focused, subscription-dependent, and then adds its own.

There is also a philosophical tension at the heart of Standard Notes that creates practical problems.
